TRACKING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT Wednesday this week is our Junior Parent Teacher Night where parents and whanau have the opportunity to meet to discuss student progress and reports sent out last week.

The first of two Senior Year 11-13 Parent Teacher Nights is scheduled for Week 2 Term 3, on Wednesday 1 August. During these Student Achievement meetings parents/whanau meet with Group Teachers to look at overall student progress and achievement.

Two weeks later on Tuesday 14 August is a further Subject Specific Senior Parent Teacher Night.

Last week students and their Group Teachers spent time tracking achievement. Having a conversation with your child about this process is a good place to start to get an idea of how they are doing.

NCEA Conversation It seems everything in Education is under review and you may have seen the headlines in recent weeks about the review of NCEA. A group of Auckland Principals took out a full page advert slamming the review process! The government is pushing ahead with the NCEA review and wants everyone with an interest in Education to be part of the conversation. The six big ideas they are suggesting for the overhaul of NCEA are….

Creating space at NCEA Level 1 for powerful learning 2.

Strengthening literacy and numeracy 3.

Ensuring NCEA Levels 2 and 3 support good connections beyond schooling 4.

Making it easier for teachers, schools, and kura to refocus on learning 5.

Ensuring the Record of Achievement tells us about students’ capabilities 6.

Dismantling barriers to NCEA

The NCEA review is one of thirteen reviews being undertaken in the wider Education Sector. Another major review is the review of Tomorrow’s Schools itself. For each review a panel of experts have been appointed forming a taskforce to lead and frame each aspect of the review.

The Independent Taskforce charged with reviewing the way our schools are governed, managed and administered, wants to hear your views and experiences of the schooling system – what’s working well, what’s not and what needs to change in order to meet the challenges we face and to achieve equity and excellence. You can find out more about the review and have your say on the Tomorrow’s Schools Review website.

Please feel encouraged to have your say. The Taskforce are keen to hear from students and parents and school staff.

Europe Art Tour Group Leave

New Zealand is one of the only Western countries in the world to have three levels, NCEA1, 2 and 3 - of qualifications in Secondary Schools. There is plenty of evidence out there to suggest over assessment is causing workload stress for teachers and anxiety for students.

Matariki Celebration On Tuesday 3 July, Kapa Haka Roopu from Te Poi School, Firth Primary School, Matamata Intermediate and Matamata College’s own Te Wairere Roopu joined together to acknowledge and celebrate Matariki. A fantastic opportunity for some of our Kaahui Ako schools to come together and celebrate Maaori student success as Maaori. Kia kaha tamariki!

HOLDEN STREET SMART JULY SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

Holden Street Smart is a one-day event providing young drivers and their Parents/Caregivers the opportunity to undertake supervised driving practice. There is a focus on developing good decision-making strategies for safe driving including assessing themselves, reading the road environment, resisting peer pressure, managing or eliminating distractions and planning ahead.

The Programme takes place in safe, controlled, off-the-road environments under the watchful eye of qualified coaches, plus the parent/caregiver.

This provides parents the opportunity to also assess themselves, in order to be a better coach and mentor to their teen.

125th Anniversary Suffrage Whakatu Wahine— For anyone interested in a workshop making recycled plastic bottle cut outs for an installation Artist, Wendy Hannah is building, to celebrate our Women Heroines.

The cut outs are simple to make. They are the bottoms of plastic drink bottles. The workshop will come with a short power-point presentation about the Suffrage Movement historically and what it means moving into the future. It would be great to get family members involved in the making of the cut outs and once they are made they can pledge them to the Chandelier Artwork. The workshop will also have parallels with recycling plastic. The workshops will run from Monday 13 August to 1st October 2018 If interested in this workshop email : hello@wendyhannah.com
