Ball a Huge Success

Teacher Only Days

Congratulations to our amazing Ball Committee for the fantastic job they did organising the School Ball. The Ascot Lounge at the Matamata Racecourse was transformed with plenty of sparkle and glitter highlighting the theme “A Night Under the Stars” .

A large crowd assembled to see the students resplendent in their beautiful gowns and smart suits as they arrived at the venue. This was bigger than a red carpet event with a wide range of spectacular drop-offs. Vehicles ranged from tractor and trailer hayrides to beautiful classic cars, VW Combies and flashy new cars. There was even a massive caravan and Kenworth truck!

The night was full of glamour, dancing and photos and for almost all participants, a brilliant night.

As with such occasions guidelines and responsible behavior is encouraged. Unfortunately a small number of students and parents got this wrong this year with some students arriving under the influence. This was very disappointing and contributed to two incidents, an altercation and some vandalism which has Racecourse Management seriously considering banning the Ball from this venue moving forward.

It is such a shame that the behavior of a few people can put a real damper on what was, for most in attendance, a fabulous night.

Please note: On 14 / 15 June, as for last year, we are holding two Teacher Only Days during Field Days week.

Friday 15 June is the Matamata Kaahui Ako PLD day which involves all Matamata Schools.

Thursday 14 June the Teacher Only Day is for Matamata College only.

Please note also: on both these dates, although there will be no formal classes and students are encouraged to stay home, the school is open for instruction and many senior students in practical subjects like Art and Technology, may choose to come in to school to get on top of their project work.

2018 WBOP Secondary Schools TeamTag Triathlon Championship We arrived at the Karapiro Domain to face stiff competition against a large number of Waikato and Bay of Plenty schools and once again exceeded expectations. There were 18 students in the Matamata College squad that each gave 100% in terms of effort and commitment and this is reflected in the results. This once again affirms my belief that our students bring something special to the sporting arena. Every single one of them has proudly represented the College by giving 100% to his/her role in the team. Four teams of the six teams we entered had the honour of standing on the podium.

Results Mollie Allison, Edward Roskam, Khan Todd (1st - U16 mixed), Mia Roberts, Jacob Fouhy, Liam Fernyhough (2nd - U16 mixed) Don Smitstra, Sam Hills, Callum Nisbet (3rd - U16 boys) Amy Maurer, Rory McLaren, Cameron Jacobsen (2 nd - U19 mixed) WBOP Mountain Biking Championship The Waikato, Bay of Plenty Mountain Biking champs is a yearly event that pits students against a challenging, multi-lap course. This is now the third year that we have entered this event and because the competition gets more serious with every season that goes by it never gets any easier. MounLiam & Callum tain Biking is enjoying increased support at Matamata College and this has been reflected in the level of participation.

There was only one other school that brought more competitors to the event. Whilst we had the support of a number of riders experienced in racing the circuit there were some for whom this was their first experience racing. Those students have set a baseline for future performances. Many thanks to all students who represented the school so proudly on the day and congratulations to Haydn and Don who placed strongly in their respective fields.

National Secondary Schools Downhill Championship Downhill Mountain Biking is a discipline not for the faint hearted. I would like to take the opportunity in this newsletter to thank the following students for having the courage to represent the school in this national event. They made their own way to Skyline Rotorua and pitted themselves against the country's best riders. It isn’t easy going into a competition disadvantaged by your equipment and experience. Our students are to be commended for their efforts. They are Don Smitstra, Callum Nisbet and Liam Fernyhough North Island Track Cycling Championship Without taking any kudos away from some of the talented cyclists we have at the College, Haydn Muter has established himself as the most competitive and persevering cyclist. Cycling on the track forms a regular part of Haydn’s training regime and on the 21st of March he challenged himself by competing against some of the country's most accomplished riders. He did well to get into the finals. The school thanks him for the contribution he is making to this growing sport. The photos below show Haydn wearing a school skinsuit that he both designed and paid for.

That he has done this shows the pride he has in his school and the passion he has for his sport.

And rolling off the start for the U19 Men’s keirin race The Moon Ride Whilst the Moon Ride (a yearly 12/24 hour relay held annually in the Redwood Forest) is not a school sanctioned event it is nonetheless important to acknowledge the Matamata College, school team that entered and gained creditable results. The following students entered the 12 hour event and placed 3rd.

SMART WAIKATO SECONDARY SCHOOL EMPLOYER PARTNERSHIPS

The Mathematics Learning Area is excited to announce that we are part of the Secondary School-Employer Partnership (SSEP) Programme. What this means for our Year 10 students is, SSEP programme business representatives come into the classroom to show students how they apply classroom lessons in their work environment. Students also go on workplace visits hosted by employer partners to see their classroom learning being applied in real work situations. In addition to gaining a better understanding of the school subject of Mathematics and its various topics, students meet a range of business representatives from different industries and are introduced to a wide range of career pathways. This supports students when thinking about their future and their school subject choices. The programme will be held during Term 2-4. Our Year 10 students can expect more information and permission slips home soon.

Matamata College Centenary Book 1918 -2018 Copies of the Centenary book are still available for sale at $10 per copy.

They can be purchased from the Student Reception Office at school.

Student Exchange Australia New Zealand is looking for a volunteer host family for a 16 year old German girl who is currently attending Matamata College. She is very well settled at the College, so we are hoping that someone from the school community may be interested in hosting her.

She is outgoing and friendly and loves sport and outdoor activities. Together with her host family she would love to experience new activities and simply be part of her host family’s daily life. We are looking for a family who are able to host her from May to the end of November. FERMENTING WORKSHOP - A TRANSITION TOWNS EVENT

Learn to make Sauerkraut Fermented and cultured foods are a healthy, tasty addition to our diet and are very easy to make at home. If you would like to learn how to make Sauerkraut, Cath Lupton is offering a one-off night class where you will have the chance to make your own jar of Sauerkraut to take home and enjoy.

DATE: WEDNESDAY 06 JUNE 2018 TIME: 6.30PM – 8.30PM COST: $10 PER PERSON YOU WILL NEED TO BRING  A medium to large, green or red cabbage – organic if you can  ¼ cup of fine Himalayan salt or Sea salt  A wide mouth spring top glass jar with a rubber seal with a large enough opening to put your hand/knuckles in. Jars will need to hold up to two cups of liquid (or you can bring two smaller jars).  A plastic [box style] container – e.g. the bottom half of a lunch box/food container to carry your jar home in  A bag of marbles – these act as weights in the top of the jar  Some paper towels and a tea towel OPTIONAL If you would like to flavour your sauerkraut you can add any or all of the following ingredients For Green cabbage: garlic, onions, turmeric, caraway seeds For Red cabbage: apple, beetroot, onions, ginger, garlic Some of these additional ingredients will be available at the class.
