Notice of Asbestos Removal Work Important Message from the Matamata College Board of Trustees To Whom It May Concern, ATL Group Ltd, a licensed Asbestos Removalist (WorkSafe Class A Licence: number RA16050014) will be undertaking removal work of some Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) from Matamata College Administration Block, Hall Roof.

This removal work will be conducted between the hours of 7 AM to 5 PM on Monday 2 October, and is expected to finish on Wednesday 11 October 2017. This work may need to be re-scheduled in the event of bad weather.

WorkSafe NZ was notified on 13/9/17 that this licensed asbestos removal work is to be undertaken.

Matamata College management and Board of Trustees have been consulted about the nature and timing of this work, together with the safety measures to be used.

The following safety measures will be put in place and maintained for the duration of this project: 

Signs, barriers and/or temporary fencing will be installed.  PVA solution or water will be applied to asbestos containing materials to prevent airborne asbestos fibres dust (as required).  Asbestos containing materials will not be broken, where possible.  Plastic will be used to cover horizontal surfaces and surrounds.  Asbestos containing material will be wrapped on site and disposed of at an approved tip site.  Air monitoring at the work site boundary will be in place for the duration of the work. If asbestos fibres above the allowable safe limit are detected, work will cease immediately and corrective measures applied.  An independent party will carry out an inspection of the site on completion of the work, and issue a clearance certificate.

The Ministry of Education website has further information about the management of asbestos and procedures to ensure the safety of all involved in or affected by the work, at the school and community. International Students Making Their Mark

At last week’s Assembly, international student Aliesha from Korea presented one of the best speeches heard in recent years at the school. Aliesha kept the masses entertained about her tale of being lost in Pohlen Park and not being able to find her homestay’s house. It was a heartwarming story of trust and eventually receiving help from a stranger , a man, a beautiful dog, an adventurous car ride and the good in people in our community. Aliesha went on to talk of the differences in her life in rural Korea compared to life in Matamata. One of the most stark differences was in the length of her school day which began with assisting her teachers to clean the school before 10 x 50 minute periods. Eating both lunch and dinner at school before going to further tutoring each day and not returning home until after 10.00pm! Very much different from her cruisey school day at Matamata College.

Aliesha also went on to reflect that she found it amazing that as a person who had never travelled, to find she met people from around the world in her Matamata English class, sitting with and becoming friends with students from Sweden, the Philippines, South Africa, Japan and New Zealand. Her Korean classmate Ali also spoke and wore her national costume, which is only ever worn at special celebrations, sent out for the assembly by her parents.

International students definitely add diversity to our school and we gain as much from them as they do in their Matamata experience. With our currently static roll they have become increasingly important in providing extra funds to support our school programmes. Homestay Manager, Kay Tappin and fellow International Student Coordinator Stephanie Gollan are doing a fantastic job running our International programme and are always on the look out for new host families. Winter Tournament

A huge thanks to all coaches, managers and helpers who attended winter tournament week 2017. We are so lucky to have such wonderful people in our school community willing to take time out of their busy lives to give our students such amazing experiences and opportunities. It is a big undertaking and we simply could not do it without your outstanding support. From all accounts our teams did us proud both on and off the field and you can catch up on how they performed later in this newsletter.

Boys A Basketball Pullman Cup Auckland

Our Senior Tournament team headed to South Auckland to the new Bruce Pullman Stadium to compete against schools that are somewhat larger than ours for the Northern Cup. We arrived with our 8 players with nearly every other team there having 12 players. The boys gained a lot of confidence from their first game coming away with a well-deserved win of 74 40 against Kavanagh College. This confidence continued to follow on through the tournament as they won their second game 75-42, third game 69-49 and fourth game 68-57. The boys played hard in their semi-final against Rosehill College and made a great comeback in the 3rd quarter but didn’t manage to gain the win. This left the boys playing for an impressive 3 rd and 4th. A few injuries to our team meant the boys had 1 and a half subs for their final against Waitakere College but regardless the boys played hard and were proud to come away with 4th out of 19 high quality teams. We were so proud of our efforts and to finish the year playing at such a high level was a great achievement. – Claude Stoner (Manager)

New World College A UNISS Success = Promotion New World College A had an awesome week at the UNISS Netball tournament hosted at AMI Auckland Netball Centre. The girls topped their first pool in the B Grade to progress to the top 16 and then their second pool to make the top 8. One loss in the third pool saw them playing off on the final day for 5th -8th place. After winning the morning game comfortably the girls went into the 5th/6th place final against Thames High School.

There was a lot riding on the game as 1st-5th placed teams gain promotion to the A grade for 2018, the final score 35-34 to Matamata reflected this! Poihaere Wharawhara was named in the B Grade tournament team and mid-court player for the B Grade. 2011 was the last time Matamata were in the A Grade so a great effort from Karen, Denise and the girls to win nine from ten games in 5 days. Poi, Shaydene Begovich, Nicole Butterworth and Erana Pou were the Y13 girls playing their last College netball tournament and leaving a great legacy for future teams.

Girls Hockey

played game from both sides but our girls showed real patience and composure to end up with the 2-0 win. Our girls then managed to crack the top 4 after they took out the victory against Massey in a 4-0 win. The girl’s next challenge was the play off for 3rd and 4th in which they played against Otumoetai College, It was a hard fought game which resulted in a 1-1 draw. Due to the girls’ great form over the tournament it saw them edge ahead of Otumoetai to take out 3rd place overall. The girls played their heart and souls out and left everything on the turf. Our Midfield were tremendous with Courtney Hawkings, Emily de Klerk and Rita Jeffery being standouts and allowing impressive striker Lauren Hawkings to convert a tournament high 12 individual field goals.

NSSFA Tournaments

NSSFA Tournaments 4 - 8 September saw Matamata College well represented by the Senior Boys 1st XI participating in the Trident Tournament at Gower Park, Hamilton where a difficult pool meant the squad finished its pool games with a chance to play off for 9-16 place. Two wins in the placing rounds which included a nail-biting penalty shoot-out against Taradale resulted in a 10th place overall. A top half finish against some quality squads is a credit to the lads whose behaviour on and off the pitch was a credit to them. Great work boys.

The Senior Girls 1st XI travelled to Rotorua for the Maurice Hulme Tournament and faced a tough pool winning their first game in the pool games before playing off for their final placing. Their coaches commented on their grit and determination in the face of injury and illness and they competed to the final whistle.

An entry to the Hillsdene Tournament in Tauranga for the Junior Boys A squad would have proved to be a lesson in maintaining effort and composure over the four days of their tough competition which meant two draws from their pool games. The boys enjoyed their win on the final day and the experience will prove invaluable for their continued development.

The Girls Hockey team started out with a bang in their first game of the tournament against Onehunga, taking the win with an impressive 9-0. They continued on in their winning ways triumphing over Northcote College with a 3-0 win followed by a win over Trident from Whakatane, It was a tough and well-
