Kiwanis continue cemetery restoration

W

hen president, Justin Scelly, suggested that Matamata Kiwanis consider adopting the upgrade of the Waharoa Cemetery as an ongoing project, it was after an inspection members agreed to the proposal.

In an endeavour to progress the project, and in recognition of the fact that the cemetery is basically a Council responsibility, the Kiwanis Club advised the MPDC of their intention and were thrilled to get the go ahead. At the first working bee soon after, Kiwanis members began spraying and weeding, water blasting, replacing soil and weed-matting the area. J Swap Contractor’s Ltd and Comag Ltd kindly provided equipment to ensure preparation for painting could be completed.

With another working bee held on Sunday, it was with appreciated assistance from the Matamata Cubs and Scouts, that significant progress was made spreading metal and further tidying the cemetery.

“Fundraising is a crucial part of the Cubs and Scouts movement” says Kiwanis treasurer Garry King. “When they contacted us recently looking for a donation, they were adamant they didn’t want a hand-out. They were eager to jump in and help us with a community project if they could, so the extra hands were really appreciated. The kids worked as hard as their parents and leaders and we are really proud of their efforts.” Along with the Cubs and Scouts, Kiwanis would like to offer their appreciation to the continued support of J Swap Contractors Ltd, Matamata Mitre 10 and Baigent Motors with this ongoing project. Kiwanis Club members are aware that some local residents have relations interned at this cemetery and, in view of that, invite anyone interested to attend further working bees undertaken by the club at the cemetery. Committed to a clean community

aime McIntyre - or Mrs Mac as she’s known to many local students, is passionate about preserving our beautiful environment and, with the support of current and ex-students of Matamata Intermediate School, came up with an idea sure to benefit locals and visitors to our community.

“I’ve attended a few beach clean-ups as a volunteer” says Jaime, “which has made me very aware of litter and the impact is has on the look and feel of our environment. I got chatting with a few of my students and we thought why not look in our own backyard and make a sustainable difference. Together we are responsible for the world our children will grow up in, and it’s important we do what we can to really promote the future health of our planet.”

After forming a core organisational group, Jaime and her team decided a poster competition to promote the event would be a great step forward in ensuring environmental education and awareness was at the forefront of discussion.

They followed this initiative with social media promotion which invites all community members, families and supporters to pitch in and assist with the clean-up. “Whether people have an hour or more to spare, we are welcoming anyone that can come along” says

Cotter Cup multisport around the district O n behalf of major sponsor ASB, Rural Manager Ian Johnston once again acknowledged a great day, fantastic organisation and unbelievable skill of all players in the recent Cotter Cup and AD Orr annual rugby challenge held at Wealleans Park at Hinuera.

Simultaneously the Hinuera School PTA Hockey challenge was contested at Matamata College (won by Hinuera School), the Hinuera/Te Poi Lions Netball Shield at Matamata Netball Centre (won by Firth School) and the Matamata District Schools Soccer Challenge (won by Matamata Primary) at the soccer reserve adjacent to the netball courts.

Cotter Cup competition first began many years ago when Hinuera Rugby Club Founder and Life Member, Mr P Cotter gifted a cup to reward junior competition between Hinuera and Te Poi School’s. After rolls declined at the two rural schools however, it was decided that to keep competition standard high, other schools in the district would be invited to participate and celebrate the high calibre of Year five and six rugby. The AD Orr cup was also introduced for Year three and four rugby players.

In 2005 the first interschool netball tournament was held simultaneously and saw teams competing for the Hinuera/Te Poi Lions Shield keeping the girls busy while the boys at Wealleans Park next door battled out the rugby. Later, and kindly donated by the Hinuera School PTA, a hockey trophy was also introduced and again on the same day, is played at the Matamata College hockey turf. 2013 then saw the introduction of the Matamata District Schools Soccer Challenge which has seen Cotter Cup Day now a multi-sport event with dozens of local students from various schools competing. Cool Change raising funds

earing that Latham Begovich had been recently diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma was an extremely upsetting blow to his family, friends and all who know the bubbly little seven year old.

Latham’s parents, Hayden and Alesha, recently came across a large lump in Latham’s groin. After immediately taking him to the doctor, it was diagnosed as a hernia and a referral was made to get it looked at with surgery to fix it.

However, upon arrival to Waikato Hospital, Hayden and Alesha were informed that Latham did not have a hernia, and in fact, it was his lymph nodes. After scans, bloods and X-Rays they were informed that the lymph nodes in his groin and abdomen were extremely inflamed and that it was in all probability, cancerous and lymphoma.

After being immediately transferred to Starship Hospital in Auckland, Latham has had a biopsy and received a final diagnosis of Burkitt Lymphoma.

This is an extremely aggressive and fast growing form of Lymphoma. Latham now has around four to five months of some fairly aggressive chemotherapy ahead of him with most of this time spent at Starship.

Given his diagnosis, Latham underwent a full body CT scan, lumber puncture and a bone marrow test. Following this, he began his first chemo session.

As an extremely keen fisherman, Latham is a popular junior member of Matamata Fishing Club and to help support his family’s journey through coming months of treatment and recovery, committee member Phil Stevens has donated a full day’s charter for four aboard the good ship, Cool Change. The prize, as advertised below, will be raffled and includes a skipper, bait and fishing gear so all you’ll need to provide is food and refreshments for your guests. Whether it’s family, friends or workmates, the charter at the destination of your choice will be a day to remember and, at the same time, assist the Begovich family with associated costs to support their son.

All financial contributions and donations will be used to help keep Hayden, Alesha and little sister Eden close to Latham and provide for other costs to help along the journey such as supplements, organic food and other bits and pieces to make hospital time more bearable. Festival confirmed for March 2019

W

hen the very first committee got together to plan a festival of flowers, it was unlikely they realised what a phenomenal success it would continue to be nearly 50 years later.

Gearing up for the March 2019 festival, President Gaylene Lee on behalf of the committee, says 14 courts have been confirmed along with expressions of interest to create smaller cameos. “We are welcoming interest from Matamata College students who have shown particular talent where artistic variations of wearable arts are concerned” says Gaylene, “and are more than happy to offer mentoring and assistance if they would like to become involved. The festival is a celebration of art in many forms made from flowers, fauna and foliage and it’s always neat to welcome new people taking an interest.”

With literally thousands of visitors to Matamata during the festival week, the committee acknowledges what a fantastic boost it is for retailers of all descriptions.

“Many groups from all over the island book by the busload” says vice President Amy Crozier, “and while here, they often take the opportunity to wander around town, visit cafes and shop! The Matamata festival has become renowned for its spectacular displays that really do have something for everyone and we always get incredibly positive feedback following their visits.”

Although some of the court holders have already pencilled ideas that fit the 2019 ‘Dreamweaver’ theme, most are throwing ideas around within their teams that will not only be something vastly different to anything they may have created before – but that also provide an opportunity to feature flowers and foliage in unique and interesting ways. “Over the years we have had some incredibly talented designers that honestly leave visitors in awe” says Amy. “There are always those that are

A Royal Love Many people stayed up last Saturday evening to view the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. It was wonderful to see those two young people begin married life. Harry was suitably solemn and appeared very emotional at times. Meghan radiant, with a smile that never left her face. The vows: I take you to be my wife/husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part; according to God’s holy law. In the presence of God I make this vow.

A friend of mine recently told me he didn’t get the chance to pack his bags as he arrived home and found his clothes on the front porch! But they worked things out for the vows ‘to love and cherish till death us do part’, override fickle emotion and remind us of our covenant before God. And in the presence of family and friends, whose support is so valuable.

I pray Prince Harry and Meghan’s marriage brings the best out of each as they love and support each other to be all God created them to be. Marriage has huge potential to bless so many people.

“A stooped, frail man shuffled with difficulty down Broadway, Matamata, aided by a shotting stick. He was the victim of one of those unfortunate football rarities; an injury which caused permanent disability.

His name is Pike Johnston, a member of the Hinuera Rugby Football Club and he was seriously injured on the playing field in a match before World War Two. Mr Tim Lynch, a Te Poi farmer not long returned from overseas after services with the 2NZEF, watched this injured and courageous man as he moved slowly along, and decided that something had to be done immediately to help the stricken Pike. He had in mind a charity football match, and the opportunity to put the idea into practice came at a social gathering at which a group of “kiwis” were welcoming home one of their footballer friends. The conversation inevitably drifted into a discussion of the old game and Tim, noticing that a number present had been talented footballers in the pre Hitler era, suggested that they could pick a team of “old timers” and play a local team as a benefit match for Pike.

This idea was taken up enthusiastically and, in company with Mr W Carroll, Tim selected a team which in due course, took the field and defeated a Hinuera 15. The group at this stage called themselves the “Old Timers” and played several more matches. These games were good open football played for sheer enjoyment, and always for charity.

It was in 1946 that Mr Jock Sharpe suggested that the Old Timers organised themselves into a club and soon a meeting was convened of old time footballers and supporters. The meeting was held in the old Matamata Rugby Football Clubrooms

behind Waterson and Coy and so the Corinthian Rugby Football Club was born.”

Through the years the Corinthian Rugby Football Club continues to foster old associations in the spirit of rugby in our community says Patron, Henry Howard who originally played U21 level. Henry was later invited to become a member of the Corinthians and has always been a staunch supporter of the committed focus on junior rugby and its involvement in both Gwynne Shield and Bowers Cup representative school boy rugby. “Times changed with the introduction of ACC and the like” he says, “but the Corinthians have moved with the times and are proud to continue raising funds in the interest of fostering or encouraging excellence. The annual Corinthian Day and Senior Player of the Year for instance, are great examples of this.”

With appreciated support from major sponsor Matamata Timer & Hardware, Henry along with current President, Philip Samuels, and committee believe the organisation is still very relevant. “Recognition of young talent remains crucial” says Henry, “both individually and in a team environment. We have seen young men that have been awarded the Des Connor Boot at Year 8 intermediate school level go on to enjoy fantastic careers both on and off the field. Being part of that journey is very rewarding for all of us.”

On Monday June 4, the Queen’s Birthday rugby carnival will begin with Corinthians U19 vs Thames Valley U19 at 1pm, the Waikato Harlequins vs BOP Wasps also at 1pm and the feature game kicks off between the Corinthians and Thames Valley at 2.30pm. This has been on a home and

away basis since 1972. It is a highlight of the year for Corinthians to play an NPC team and over the years we have seen very competitive scores. In that time we have also been lucky to have many young up and coming players in the teams. From the Corinthians, some of particular mention are Johnno Gibbs, Craig Innes, Inga the Winger, Mathew Ridge and Scott McLeod, all of whom have gone onto represent our country. For Thames Valley, Ross Cooper both played and coached and other players of note have been Carl Hoft, Keith Robinson, Graeme Purvis, Wayne Warlow and Dennis Brown. Sharing talent for Johanna

S

everal years ago, when Matamata woman Lei Vidamo needed financial assistance to enable specialist therapy training for her daughter Blues who had been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, she was absolutely overwhelmed by the support provided within our community. She always vowed that someday, she would ‘pay it forward’ for another local family.

This opportunity presented itself recently when she learned that five year old Johanna Lapuz, the daughter of family friends employed at YWAM Family Ministries in Okauia, was diagnosed with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). Initially the little girl had been admitted to Waikato after reoccurring fevers but within just two days, was rushed to Starship Hospital where, after testing, it was revealed she would require a bone marrow transplant. “The only successful tissue match was Johanna’s older brother who resides in the Philippines with a family of his own” says Lei. “Obviously bringing him to New Zealand for the transplant comes at a significant cost so I immediately started thinking of ways I could help raise funds for the family.”

As a music teacher at various schools around the district, Lei came up with the idea of a fundraising event that would not only give locals the opportunity to help the Lapuz family, but also have a lot of fun sharing their various talents.

Aptly named Matamata’s Got Talent, musicians, singers, dancers, comedians or basically anyone with a talent are encouraged to enter as solo, duo or group acts for a registration fee of $30. The event will be open to the whole community at the Matamata-Piako Memorial and Civic Centre on Saturday, June 23 with some great prizes up for grabs. “Already New World Matamata and Redoubt Bar &

Eatery have offered generous support and other local businesses have contributed spot prizes and financial contributions to go towards the cash awards for first, second and third place” says Lei. “I am constantly astounded by the kindness of our community and to know Johanna will benefit, is extremely appreciated by her family.”

Since her diagnosis, Johanna has undergone chemotherapy treatment which will continue after the transplant in more of a gradual manner to alleviate the likelihood of a HLH flare up. She, according to her mum Jessica, is in reasonably good spirits – particularly after Sunday School children and members of Matamata Baptist Church created a “Joy jar” which was delivered to Starship. “She calls it her treasure jar” laughs Lei! “It’s filled with letters and messages of love and hope that really do give Johanna and her family so much joy at such a trying time.”

Health shuttle gears up for second decade

he Matamata Community Health Shuttle has just driven into its second decade of service after ferrying over 22,000 passengers and notching up close to 900,000 kilometres on Waikato roads during its first 10 years.

The health shuttle’s success has surpassed the hopes and expectations of governing trust’s founder member and chairman Garry Stanley who, with his fellow 2008 steering committee members – Bryan Trim, Ann Stokes, Daryl Anderson and Jan Barnes – predicted the then fledgling service would transport around 700 passengers a year, 10 per cent of the Matamata population’s visits to DHB facilities and other clinics.

tle Trust was subsequently established, with a generous benefactor donating funds which, with assistance from the Red Cross, allowed the purchase of a brand-new Ford Transit 12-seater mini-bus.

By its April 30 tenth birthday, the shuttle service, staffed by a willing band of volunteer drivers and supporters, had not only carried 22,061 passengers and covered 880,886kms, but had also increased to a three-strong fleet, enabling an even more efficient and user-friendly service. During the last year (April – March), the health shuttle service transported 2625 passengers which included its 20,000th passenger Heather Kirk on July 18, 2018.

n almost two years since Jane Pike opened the doors, Jane’s Fashion & Accessories, the popular ladies store on Arawa Street has donated thousands of dollars to crucial support organisations within our community. “After we held our first fashion evening for the benefit of Pohlen Hospital, feedback from everyone who attended was tremendous” says Jane.

“We all had such a lot of fun and as well as nibbles, bubbles and likeminded locals coming together, some of our lovely fashions for the new season were modelled by women we all know from around the town. It’s nice to be able to put different looks together in a relaxed environment and, at the same time, donate proceeds of

the evening to such worthwhile causes.”

With the fourth fashion event held last week, the charity recipients, Matamata Citizens Advice Bureau, were delighted to receive a donation of $800. Past recipients have also included St John and Matamata Volunteer Fire Brigade.

New café Tika open now in Matamata

t is quite possible that anyone living in RD1 Tirau has a postie so fast, it could be difficult to catch a glimpse of him!

Of course this is not while driving his NZ Post delivery vehicle but, in his own time, Jim McMurray has notched up some pretty incredible achievements – not least the fact he has been a world champion five times, held 15 national titles, and held the World (and New Zealand) one hour track record.

Jim is a cyclist and after retailing bicycles for the past 30 years, made the decision to buy the rural delivery contract early this year to better suit his lifestyle. Recently Jim competed at the New Zealand Age Group National Championships in both the 78km road race and 25km time trial held at Carterton. With over 1,000 competitors taking part, he won both events in the Masters 5 age group which, added to his previous win at the Waikato/Bay of Plenty time trial, means he is literally the fastest of all master’s age groups in New Zealand!

Having been nominated for the 2017 New Zealand Male Masters Cyclist of the year award by the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cycle Centre, Jim was absolutely astounded on Saturday night to win the prestigious award which was presented at the National awards dinner in Christchurch. “It is an extreme honour” says Jim, “especially given this is the single largest category at the awards, and has the most competitors from eight age groups. I was extremely proud to accept the award.”

ond and fourth place at the UCI World Champs in Albi, France. “I’ll be heading to Italy in August to compete in the 22km time trials and the 135km road race” says Jim. “Of course finishing in top spots is a real thrill but the highlight, in Masters events especially, is more about being fit and staying fit. Cycling has offered so much more than a trophy cabinet and as long as I am able, I’ll continue to give it my best. I take part in as many rides as I can whether in a competitive capacity or just for fun. It’s a great way to see the world and defy the perils of aging! Of course my wife Julie, through supporting my interest, has no complaints about forced holidays in beautiful places either! Caron Stewart.

The new café is open now, serving up fresh, tasty food and local Essenza Coffee, roasted just 20 minutes away, Tika is open 7 days a week, from 8am until 4pm.

The name, Tika, is a Maori word meaning to be true or fair, or to do things the right way. Owner Phil comments: “It really speaks to the way I like to do business, I put a lot of value on doing things the right way and having a positive impact in the community. Businesses don’t exist simply to make money, they exist to solve problems, provide services and create jobs.”

The focus at Tika then, will be on delivering great food and coffee in a way that is rewarding for staff and customers alike, while caring for the environment and local community. This means using only free-range meats and eggs, sustainably produced ingredients, organic where possible, sourcing from local suppliers and using kiwi-made products.

Mackay also acknowledges the need to build a strong team: “I know that the success of this new café depends entirely on having great staff, so it’s important that I find the right people and create an environment where we can all enjoy our work.”

Phil certainly has plenty of experience in the industry, with his background including stints as a baker, waiter, barista and several years roasting coffee. His previous business, Rouge café in Cambridge, is well known in the region. He and wife Alana were at the helm there for nearly nine years after starting from scratch in 2009.

Celebrating another successful festival T he annual Matamata Festival of Music was held last weekend and according to Musical Director, Memorie Brooky, was another outstanding showcase of brass talent from around the North Island.

“We had nine bands performing” she says, “and with great support from our local community, enjoyed another fantastic event.”

With an aim of providing something the band enjoyed playing as much as the audience enjoyed listening, Memorie likes to select a playlist that push the band out of their comfort zone, challenge their skill and keep performances relevant to today’s diverse tastes in music. “It’s all about entertainment” says Memorie, “and after opening with ‘Everybody Needs Somebody’, Kaperiera Hughes our senior soloist then played ‘Buster Strikes Back’. As an ensemble we followed her outstanding performance with ‘Can’t help falling in Love’, a Salvation Army tune called ‘To be in your presence’ and finished with the Jackson 5, ‘Can you feel it’. We received enthusiastic applause and were really happy with our performances.”

Formally the Pohlen Cup, the Festival of Music has been an annual event for over a decade since it became apparent band participation was declining. “We were looking at ways we could attract more bands so opening it up from a traditional brass band competition to a festival that concert, wind and symphonic bands could take part, was definitely a move in the right direction” says Memorie. “We are so fortunate to have a committee and members that are not only extremely progressive, but open to a change in direction where necessary.

Had we not made this decision, we could very well have had to fold the event completely.”

“We’re very pleased however, to have kept the standard high, and can celebrate our gold award with them on their return.”

Once the instruments are completed, it is my intention to see what we can do about teaching the students how to play” he says, “particularly given the interest they have shown so far. I have another class that are making Kalimba’s which are traditional African musical instruments consisting of a wooden board with attached staggered metal tines. They are played by holding the instrument in the hands and plucking the tines with the thumbs which has students really excited! Why do bad things happen?

ell, basically it would seem to be the result of Satan’s presence in the world, and the fall of man in the Garden of Eden.

When this happened the world was opened up to the effects of evil. Since then mankind has suffered in various ways – natural disasters, the sinfulness of mankind, sickness and pain, and a withering of our spiritual life. God must not be blamed for these things.

God was aware of our need to be saved.

In his love and mercy he sent his Son, Jesus into the world to redeem us. We must be “born again”, not physically, but spiritually.

This is necessary for all people.

When we accept Jesus Christ as our Saviour and ask for the forgiveness of our sins, we receive a new life - free from sin and willing to accept the Holy Spirit into our hearts. We are invigorated, renewed, and uplifted.

This is a good time to start prayer, Bible

study, and church attendance. We now follow the Christian life, walking daily with Jesus as our guide. We can be baptised as a baby or as an adult, making us a child of God. The deeper our faith in God, the greater is its potential to carry us through the rough times.

God permits evil in the world only because of the good that he can draw from it.

We who are finite beings can never fully understand the infinite man of God. The deeper our faith, the stronger our love, the more we can help God improve our world and build on his work of creation.

With faith-filled families and societies we can do much to make the world a better place.

We should realise that the Bible accounts of Christ’s crucifixion death and resurrection are not fairy tales. They are historical facts.

t this time of the year, with the cold weather coming on, many people are thinking of taking an overseas holiday. This gives a chance to catch up with some of the new professional productions in Australia, America or the UK. Over in Sydney “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” runs until July while the Sondheim musical “Assassins” is on at the Opera House. “The Book of Mormon” is on at the Lyric Theatre until September and “Jersey Boys” is at the Haymarket in September. In Melbourne “The Wizard of Oz” is at the Regent Theatre with “The Rocky Horror Show” at Her Majesty’s, and “Mamma Mia” at the Princess theatre. Further afield in London there are over 20 musicals and even more plays to see. Musicals include “The Book of Mormon”, “Phantom of the Opera”, “School of Rock”, “Wicked” and a new Mel Brooks musical comedy “Young Frankenstein” based on his 1974 movie of the same name.

For those fortunate enough to visit the Big Apple, New York, again there are 20-30 musicals and numerous plays, many of them new. Shows include “Wicked” at the Gershwin Theatre, “Phantom of the Opera” at the Majestic, “Kinky Boots” at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, with “Aladdin”, “Lion King” “Chicago”, and a musical about “Spongebob Squarepants”.

Some of these West End or Broadway productions feature International Film and Stage stars.

Coming up soon in our area Cambridge Repertory Theatre present the April Phillips play “Blind Eye” opening for a two week run. Later in June Detour Theatre Tauranga presents the Noel Coward comedy “Blithe Spirit”. Tauranga Repertory Theatre presents the play “Dirty Dusting” by Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood at 16th Avenue Theatre Tauranga for a two week season.

his practical workshop with Cath Lupton will focus on making sauerkraut with fermented cabbage. (It will review how to ferment other veges so the general process is understood.) The session will also cover the basics of the fermented drink Kombutcha, however it won’t be made on the night as it requires a starter for each person.

There will be information on the health benefits of fermented foods and how to include them in your diet for that reason and for their delicious taste! Participants will need to bring several clean jars, their own cabbage, a sharp knife, some salt (Himalayan if possible), and a box or similar to carry items.

The workshop is organised by Transition Matamata - a non-profit community group promoting energy conservation, sustainable living and a strong and resilient local economy.

Fishing Report

i all, I hope all is good with you and your families. I hope you have had a chance to spend some quality time together and even better, if its fishing.

On the local scene the rivers and streams are running a bit high and a bit dirty. You can use this to your advantage though; some of the best fishing at the moment is in the smaller streams. Why? Well the trout are in them now looking to spawn.

In the Rotorua area there is some very good fishing to be had. My man down there, trout guide guru Glen Skinner, tells me Lake Rotoiti is producing some very nice trout. Glen knows of two rainbows that some lucky anglers have caught that have tipped the scales at just over 5kg.

Now that’s a trout.

To the south to Taupo it’s a similar story.

The rivers have been up and down as far as water levels go due to the heavy rainfall at times. This has had a positive effect on the fish numbers in them. The trout are heading upstream looking at spawning and the extra water flow triggers them to head into them. My contacts down there tell me the Tauranga/Taupo is more than attractive at the moment.

Over to the sea and lets have a look at the west coast first. In a word; “frustrating”.

Mother Nature has been in a grumpy mood out west and throwing high winds and seas up to 6m at us. On a positive note later this week looks quite good and Dwayde Pinny, charter skipper, tells me there are big numbers of snapper out there on the worm beds. Dwayde tells me the best areas are in 50-55m of water out off Albatross Point.

Closer to home for most of you is the Coromandel region. Now this place is a gift that just keeps on giving. This week there is a full moon and with that, you get bigger tides and a big increase of course in water flow. Now my suggestion is to use this to your advantage and fish the mussel farms

that are in the more sheltered areas. For example in the Mania Harbour entrance and just around the corner from the Te Kumau boat ramp. Darryll up there, charter boat skipper, tells me the snapper are in amazing condition at this time of the season – fat as little footballs.

Over the ranges to the Mercury Bay area and along the coast to the Bay of Plenty.

The main story this week is the effect of the full moon and the big tides. As I said before the extra water flow is to your advantage. Get the burley going and fish the change of light if possible. If not, fish the change of tide and my info tells me the last hour or so going out and the first hour coming in has been the most productive.

PS: Wow, this has been an amazing, emotional past ten days. Last Saturday one of our precious grandchildren, Latham Begovich, has been diagnosed with Lymphoma cancer. He is one of our boats little fishermen and, at just seven years old, has a battle ahead of him. As a family I would like to take this chance to say “Thankyou” for your support. His Give-a-little page has been humbling to say the least. Latham has months of chemo ahead of him in Starship but, with all of us behind him, I’m sure he will come through and will be running around organising things at the fishing club again real soon. Thank you again!
