Summer and New Beginnings

This issue also marks a new beginning for me as the next editor of the Reflector. I can still remember as a young girl in the 1970s, sitting cross legged on our gold shag carpet reading the Reflector. I especially enjoyed the summer edition because back in the day, it contained the graduation composite pictures. The Reflector debuted on October 16, 1964 and just celebrated its 50th birthday! I follow an impressive line of past editors…my wonderful

I have been a student at Timothy (proud member of the Class of 1983), parent and employee. I love this place and hope that through the pages of this magazine, you too will have a chance to experience what a special place Timothy Christian Schools truly is or, as alumni, relive your years at Timothy. Praise God for His faithfulness to all generations!

Olaf is correct as things are different in the summer…. school is out and the season has a rhythm all its own. It’s a new beginning and summer is celebrated by students and parents alike. However, just because the school year is over doesn’t mean Timothy hangs out the “Gone Fishin’” sign!

This summer saw the first year of Summer School, several TC families hosted students from China for our Cross Cultural Camp, Timothy’s Summer Camps welcomed over 400 students and the campus received many improvements.

Timothy remains an energetic place during the summer months as our staff puts the finishing touches on the previous year and then shifts into gear for the upcoming school year. This issue will give you a glimpse into a typical TC summer and all that happens on our campus during the months of June, July, and August.

Unless you have lived in a cave the past year, you have no doubt heard about Disney’s blockbuster movie “Frozen.” One of the supporting characters is a snowman named Olaf who has a witty song in which he croons about summer. He shares his anticipation for all things warm and how he’ll be so much happier once the summer arrives. Poor little guy is naïve to the fact that hot weather is not conducive to snowmen, but, that issue does get resolved. I won’t tell you anymore in case you haven’t seen the film!

What’s happening this year at TC

What happens at TC over the summer? In this edition of The Reflector, you will enjoy reading about the “hustle-and-bustle” of summertime activity at our school.

No matter what the time of year, there will be something to uplift and inspire you— even in the summer. n

I am told there was once an era when schools would be mostly moth-balled during the summer months, but that is no longer the case. There is something going on at TC most of the time…and the summer is no exception. This place rarely sleeps.

As I take a moment to think about the summer schedule at TC, I am grateful that our campus is able to be used all year long. Many have worked hard and contributed generously to provide our school with firstrate facilities. What kind of stewards would we be if we simply shut down for three months of the year?

This school belongs to God. It is a privilege to be a part of His plan as people of all ages spend time here during the summer months. What exactly are they doing here?

The answer to that question is creatively communicated in the upcoming pages of this edition.

For those who no longer live in the area or who have not been on campus in a while, be sure to stop by in person when you are in town. I would welcome the opportunity to show you the recent developments on campus and to share with you about the new adventures of Timothy Christian School.

New School Year

Summer Camps Having fun and learning new things at TC Timothy’s Summer Camp program has come a long way since its humble beginning approximately 20 years ago.

Back in the mid-90’s, our Girls Volleyball team and Boys Varsity Basketball team participated in summer league play and held camps to work on their skills during the summer. They were popular with the students who participated and the idea began to emerge…..can we offer more camps to other students? Reps from the Board and Foundation pushed for a bigger vision of the camp idea as a means to utilize the building year round and thus, TC Summer Camps were born! Teachers liked the idea of earning a little extra money during the summer while sharing their passions and hobbies with the students.

And, the chance to just have fun in a less formal setting was also very appealing.

Timothy Summer Camps offer something for everyone and non-TC families are invited to attend, which is a great way to introduce our school to potential students. All of our camps are led by TC staff members and camps are geared for a variety of ages. The camp leader chooses the dates, times and theme of the camp which results in a wide variety of camp selections each summer. Another wonderful benefit of TC camps is it gives students a chance to meet students from other grades who are either attending or, are helpers for the camp.

Summer Staff What summer means to TC staff who work year round

In fact, summers can be even busier as they finally tackle all those big jobs they put off until the summer months or make the transition from one school year to the next. Join us as we take a “sneak peak” into the summer months of some of our staff:

Maintenance: During the summer, our maintenance department employs 4 additional summer helpers who go through the school with the proverbial fine-toothed comb. They wash baseboards, give each classroom a thorough cleaning, scrape gum off the bottom of desks (some years, they have even created a giant “gum ball!,”) wash all the windows, clean out every locker on campus, help disassemble computer labs as needed and are available for just about any other job that needs to be done so our regular maintenance crew can focus on the big jobs that get done each summer. This could include landscaping, painting, coordinating building projects, planning for the year ahead and yes, cleaning up after the camps, summer schools and groups that continue to use the campus during the summer months.

Technology: Our Technology Department is a small but mighty team

consisting of Director of Technology Kevin Hackert, full-time assistant Neal Wettstein and volunteer Cindy Favela. During the regular school year, they manage 1,200 devices that are on campus which includes 5 stationary labs, 7 mobile labs, teacher computers, iPads, projectors, SmartBoards and printers.

Each summer they replace 200-250 of our devices and update software on many of the devices. They also replace one computer lab which means removing the old computers, (the computers are donated to New to You or other Christian schools), order new equipment and then unpack and set them up. This year’s summer work was compacted into even a shorter time with Summer School taking place. eQuip, Timothy’s one-to-one iPad program, was launched at the beginning of this school year which meant

Kevin & Crew had to unwrap 360+ iPads, set-up a management system and figure out how to launch them all. They redesigned the entire network, breaking it into 14 parts, in preparation for the Ipad invasion and even pulled an “overnighter” during the summer to replace our core switches.

Transportation: While most of our busses generally DO enjoy a nice vacation from their routes during the summer months, a few of them are still being used for camps. Each bus receives an in-depth cleaning and check-up during the summer by our

However, her job isn’t over yet as new families are usually added last minute and there are bus drivers to hire, train and learn the routes.

during the summer to keep Timothy the vibrant, active school it is all year round! However, a common theme from all our summer employees is they are thrilled to see the students return in August. One of our staff had this to say: “By the end of summer, we miss the students, teachers and noise. It’s just boring without the hustle and bustle of the year. The return is always a good thing.” n

Administrative Assistants: Have you ever called the school during the summer? Guess who is answering the phones? You got it….our dedicated office ladies! But don’t let their cheerful demeanor fool you into thinking their summer is low-key. Summer is a hectic time for them as they manage student records and health records for incoming or departing students, sort textbooks, prepare transcripts, update Handbooks, schedule classes, place supply orders for teachers and laminate classroom decorations by the dozens. Then, there are the backto-school mailings that have to be coordinated and sent out. Our Business Office has their hands full as current employees and new hires need to be informed of insurance plan information. Financial Registration happens during the summer and our fiscal year ends on June 30. All this means extra work including creating new forms for each family, accounts to be reconciled and, all the tuition details to deal with. And, of course, bills and payroll still needs to go out. The list could go on and on.

Let’s just say summer is a very demanding time!

New Improvements at TC What went on with the facilities this summer

During the summer of 2014 our campus underwent several improvements. They included: • Our ES/MS Gymnasium received a total face-lift with flooring,

• New Flooring in 2nd & 3rd grade hallway – The dingy beige tiles are gone and have been replaced with a splash of the TC colors! Red borders line the walls with white tiles down the middle, giving the hall a fresh, cheery look! And, no more loose tiles!

• Timothy’s Tennis Courts

were completely resurfaced and received new nets. The courts had definitely seen better days with cracks on the surface and sagging nets.

There is much to “love” about these new courts!

• Two new buses were added to our fleet, bringing our total to 19 busses.

• A new boiler system in the Grade School will help keep the temperatures regulated.

The old system was nearly 40 years old so it was definitely time for an upgrade.

• Timothy’s parking lot received some maintenance and improvements.

The best news to all this? None of these improvements impacted your tuition. These projects are a result of the Capital Maintenance Fee and very generous donors!

Cross Cultural Camp Students from China joined with some of our TC students for fun and fellowship

This past summer TCS WorldView International Student Program hosted its first American/Chinese Cross-Cultural Camp from July 19th to August 3rd. We welcomed 18 Chinese guests, as well as more than 15 American students.

The purpose of the camp was to develop relationships and foster greater understanding between the 2 groups.

Our guests were welcomed by cheering host families holding “Welcome” signs and balloons, in front of the high school. Our guests were totally stunned by the welcome, and crowded to that side of the bus, taking a barrage of pictures. Students left with their hosts to get to know each other and rest before the camp started on Monday.

On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings Chinese students took English as a Second Language classes with Mrs. Maria Hodapp, while American students took Chinese language and culture classes with Ms. Jenny Chen (Paper Lantern Language School). Students then came together for lunch, followed by sports/activities led by Ryan Dekoekkoek, Assistant Program Director.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, American and Chinese students explored Chicago on various field trips. Field trip activities included lakefront Segway tour, North Ave. Beach Day, Chinatown tour and lunch, Univ. of Chicago visit, John Hancock Skydeck, and much more.

Camp ended with dinner and a wonderful time of fellowship, which included singing of America the Beautiful, the Chinese national anthem, How Great is Our God, and traditional Chinese songs sung by the Chinese and American students, who had learned the songs during their Chinese classes. There were many hugs and tears as we waved goodbye to our guests as they left on the bus for O’Hare Airport.

A special “xie-xie” goes out to our host families and ambassador students. While all students were much appreciated, the 10 ambassador students served a special role. These students attended camp for free, in exchange for committing to the entire 2 weeks.

They went above and beyond in exhibiting a warm, welcoming and Christ-like spirit with our Chinese guests.

Our host families also made a huge impact on our guests. The guests were in awe of their hospitality. A highlight for the staff was when the Chinese translators reported overhearing the Chinese guests discussing their home stay. They were overheard saying that their

ambassador students and host families were so loving “...it must have something to do with their Jesus!”

Homecoming Highlights from this year’s fun & festivities Timothy Christian’s first Fall Homecoming festivities will go down in the history books as partly soggy but fully successful.

The rainy weather couldn’t dampen the excitement at Friday night’s soccer game against Illiana Christian or the many other homecoming events that were planned for that evening.

Timothy’s Trojan fans and Alumni came out and supported the school and the beginning of a new school tradition. A little rain and cold couldn’t keep them from celebrating Timothy Christian’s rich heritage and traditions, even if that tradition was just beginning.

The evening started with the JV soccer team giving it their all against Illiana Christian. The game was followed up with introductions of 17 former Homecoming Queens and Kings from a variety of years past. Past royalty in attendance included Timothy’s first queen, two married couples, five groups of siblings and many other outstanding representatives of Timothy pride throughout the years. The royalty ranks were added to as the 2014-2015 homecoming court was

A little rain won’t stop us – We Are TC!

A new event this year was a reception held during the game near the Alumni Courtyard specifically for Timothy’s Legacy Alumni. Legacy Alumni are the Alumni that graduated from Timothy Christian High School 50 years ago or more. Legacy Alumni spent a pleasant (and dry) couple of hours enjoying dessert, paging through old year books and reminiscing about their time roaming the halls of Timothy. A great time was had by everyone in attendance and it is sure to be the start of another great tradition.

Before the varsity game, an Alumni choir sang the National Anthem and a few brave Alumni men led the crowd in a rousing rendition of the Timothy Fight Song while grade and middle school boys proudly ran on the soccer field carrying flags that spelled out TROJANS. At half-time

of the Varsity soccer game the Timothy Poms Squad entertained the crowd with an energetic routine and the 2009 Men’s Varsity Soccer team were recognized for their state championship.

The teammates present for the ceremony were gifted with their old soccer jerseys presented by Ryan DeKoekkoek, their former assistant coach while listening to a special message from their former head coach, Rudi Gesch.

Timothy’s Varsity soccer team didn’t disappoint the homecoming crowd. The Trojans defeated the Illiana Vikings in a nail biting double overtime battle with a final score of 4-3.

Another new aspect this year was that the homecoming festivities didn’t end after just one night. The events continued throughout the weekend. Saturday morning dawned with blue skies and sunshine and many came

out to the pancake breakfast and 5K Fun Run. Many enjoyed a trip down memory lane by boarding a TC bus that traveled to the “old neighborhood” on a Heritage Tour through Cicero. Participants toured the former Timothy school buildings, churches and surrounding communities that were integral to the Timothy community in the past.

The high school students put on their fancy clothes, smiled for the parent paparazzi and headed to their homecoming dance Saturday night at the Marriott hotel in Naperville. While they danced the night away, 7 classes held their class reunions at various venues around the area. The classes of 2004, 1994, 1984, 1979, 1974, 1968 and 1964 took the opportunity to enjoy all the homecoming festivities and then gather with former classmates in a more intimate setting to catch-up on old times.

The weekend was topped off with a “walk up” alumni choir participating in worship at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church just steps from the Timothy Christian Schools campus. The choir loft was filled to capacity with willing singers using their talents to support the morning’s worship service.

Former teacher and choir director, Marve Wolterstorff led the choir in two beautiful numbers of praise to God, our refuge and strength.

Academics Where learning happens all year long

The high school launched its first summer school program between June 9 and 27 this past summer and registered a total of 66 students. Courses were held between 8am and 12:15pm with the price tag of $350 for the course.

Timothy has many classes that are only offered once during the school year. The challenge of meeting students’ course requests had become increasingly more daunting with new courses being added and AP Physics moving out of zero hour and into the regular school day. Summer school 2014 was an attempt at giving students more course options during the regular school year. Students were first surveyed to determine which courses they wished to take in summer school. On the basis of their responses, one course per grade level was made available to students.

Incoming freshmen could sign up for Computer Applications, sophomores for Modern Communication, juniors for Reformed Perspectives/Ethics, and seniors for Christian Thought. Each of these courses is a graduation requirement.

Mrs. Ann Raley, Timothy’s High School Registrar, acknowledged that it will be impossible to guarantee that taking a summer school course will eliminate entirely the problem of students being locked out of elective courses. However, she added that summer school did make many electives more available to students during the regular school year. Since eleventh and twelfth grade are key years for Advanced Placement as well as honors classes, juniors and seniors were also able to scale back their very busy course load by one semester course, which many of these students were eager to do.

Student surveys conducted at the end of the summer school term were generally very positive, although

students admitted that condensing a full semester into three weeks makes for very concentrated learning in the summer. Before students register in February 2015 for their classes in 2015-16, the administration will determine whether to offer the same array of courses or to increase the selections in summer 2015. n

Athletics We are TC – Many reasons to celebrate

Every new athletic season starts out with hope of seeing goals met, the exhilaration of winning a close match and the “backslapping and hugging” of a key accomplishment, not to mention the hopes of a championship.

We believe there are many reasons to celebrate and we want to do it often! As a Jesus follower, it just seems to be a natural response as we live with a clear understanding of the finished work of the cross and the empty tomb. We have much to celebrate! Go Trojans! n

Interscholastic sports seasons are carried out with certain “knowns” that will be experienced, such as winning and losing and the ups and downs of performance. Hours spent practicing and traveling are also constants of any sports season. Not so predictable are experiences that come about because of injury and pain or even disappointment when performance or relationships do not meet our expectations. These are the “unknowns” that can have great value too.

How a season “really turns out” is unknown until it is completed. At Timothy Christian, we understand the value of the known and the unknown of life. This is one of the reasons that “celebrations” at Timothy Christian are important and we have much to celebrate this fall!

the title of MSC Champs which has not been accomplished since 2005. They were Regional Champs for the third year in a row, Sectional Champs, Super-Sectional Champs and at the time of this writing, headed to State! Our volleyball team has an impressive 32-1 record, are Conference Champs and in a good position for post-season play. Boys golf finished 3rd in the MSC conference and recognized Devin May, Jimmy Brush and Noah Pavlakos as All-Conference athletes. Girls tennis had a strong season, finishing 2nd place both in Conference and at Sectionals. Three of the players, McKenna Byrne, Toni Paterno, and Ellie Wiener qualified for the State tournament which is TC’s third State appearance in the past three years. And, our MS 8th Grade Volleyball team and MS Soccer team both finished their seasons first in Conference.

Having young children at school in first and sixth grade, I also assumed it was a high school event. Our friends who have attended for years were always aghast that our family had never attended. “Really?” I would ask, “So, what’s the big deal?”. I had to learn for myself.

In this day and age, it’s hard to find good, wholesome fun for our teens and young adults. It was a packed house filled with more than 550 attendees plus the students on stage totaling over 250 and fun was had by all. Attendees who were 10 years old and under could sit on the edge of the stage and my first grader was overjoyed to receive fist-bumps and high-fives from the high school students throughout the show. The younger kids were invited to stay on stage for intermission and served cookies and lemonade from these celebrity students while the parents got to mingle. Yet another gift to parents!

The moments ingrained into my mind (that may never be erased from memory) are Elijah Heyboer’s hysterical finale appearance singing “Macho Man” in a sumo wrestler suit and the heartfelt father/ daughter duet with Gregg and Ana DeMey. Even a week later my kids are still singing Mr. Wiener’s song, “I Won’t Say I’m Sorry, Cause I’m Not!”. We thank God every day for the blessing that Timothy Christian School has been for our family. This is yet another TC experience where you can feel the joy of the Lord and the blessing it has on all who participate.

“ Keep the Momentum” TCAA Golf Outing An update from the Advancement Office

By Bob Venhousen (’79), Director of Advancement It was a beautiful day for golf as we gathered Friday, September 19 at Seven Bridges for our annual TCAA Golf Outing. Although the day was beautiful it was a bittersweet day for us and our community as we mourned the passing of our friend, TCS dad, and Golf Committee member, Art Vos. We paid tribute to Art before starting the golf tournament and had a time of prayer for his family. Art will be greatly missed and we will always be grateful for his efforts, sense of humor, and many years of service on our committee.

We would like to express our gratitude and sincere thanks to all of our sponsors, golfers, and volunteers who made this year’s outing such an enjoyable community event and an incredible financial success. We are pleased to announce that we realized a net profit of $108,000 from this event. These funds will be directed to our Timothy Christian Athletics program. Due to the generosity of our sponsors and participants we will be able to complete all of the targeted athletic projects. The following projects will be completed with these funds; Resurfacing of the Tennis Courts, H.S. gym sound system, ES & MS gym sound system, weight room sound system, the soccer & track sound system, remodeling of the trainer’s room, and new H.S. gym dividers/curtains. The completion of these projects will greatly enhance and improve an already outstanding athletic program and experience for our athletes and coaches. New Year, New Programs

By Brad Mitchell, High School Principal Another new school year is off and running. Each school year brings new and exciting things and this year is no different. Timothy Christian High School has launched our eQuip program, which is our 1:1 iPad initiative. Over the course of two days in August we put over 350 iPads in student’s hands. We were extremely happy with the rollout and students are already using their iPads for school work in class on a regular basis.

We feel that this program will not only support the learning of our students, but it gives us the opportunity to train our students how to effectively use the iPads as a follower of Jesus.

For our first chapel of the year, I had the opportunity to speak to the students about all of the new things for this school year – homecoming in September, first semester ending before Christmas break, Renew, and eQuip – and I also talked about how we should be using technology and social media in a positive way. Just like with anything in this world, technology can be used for both positive and negative ends. We looked at Proverbs 12:18 which

I then went on to pursue my Bachelor’s at a public university. I immediately saw the benefits in my walk with the Lord having been a product of Christian education. Not only did I feel academically prepared but I felt the values that were instilled in me at home, in church, and at school all came to fruition as I navigated this new “secular” world. I learned what it meant to be ‘in the world’ and not ‘of it’. I am eternally grateful to my parents who sacrificed financially for me to get the Christian education I received.

My goal at Timothy is to show other parents the value and the eternal sacrifice they are making for their children. TCS is not just a Christian school in name, but in practice. Each student sees the love of Christ in their classrooms, in the hallways, in band, art, woodshop, and in athletics every day. Christian education is more than a Bible class. It’s an investment our teachers make every day to ensure their students know and receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Please join me in promoting this amazing education! n

They met at Calvin College and have been together for almost three years. They now live in the Twin Cities area. Aleida is a second grade teacher and Marcus is working as a Civil Engineer.

Honestly, I would involve some of these young people who are already making a difference on their own! I know tons of high school students who are already active in campaigns, writing columns, or doing interviews – if the party would just recognize that and reach out to them, it could find valuable ambassadors to young people. And I’d give some stuff away. People (especially in high school) want to belong to something, and often free things are a good way to get their attention.

What are some of your accomplishments so far?

I’ve written over 150 columns to date – syndicated on over 10 different websites at one time or another. I currently work as a Business/Politics Columnist for a DC-based outlet called Opportunity Lives. We focus on profiling small businesses and individuals creating opportunity in their communities across the country. I wrote for the Washington Times Communities for a year or so, and also as a freelance reporter for the Daily Caller.

One of my columns was once featured on MSNBC. I’ve won a Gold Circle Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and the “Columnist of the Year” award from Turning Point USA in 2013. Oh, and Donald Trump retweeted one of my articles once. That was fun.

What are your future plans? Are you hoping to have some kind of a career in politics?

I know that I want to work in Washington, DC. I interned for the Heritage Foundation two summers ago, the Daily Caller in the winter, and the Committee on Ways and Means in the House of Representatives last summer. When I graduate,

Long before there was the Internet, the Timothy Christian website, the weekly email bulletin TCS News, Facebook, Twitter and all the other methods we use to spread news about TCS, there was the Reflector.

changes throughout the years, its mission and goal has stayed the same: to keep our current families, alumni and all interested supporters informed and engaged about what is happening at Timothy Christian Schools.

So, as we celebrate the 50th birthday of this publication, we’d like to thank all the editors, advertisers, reporters, supporters and readers who make the Reflector possible.
