The word “rock” makes frequent appearances in the Bible. God is referred to as our Rock numerous times. Rocks are used to demonstrate strength, act as memorials, function as foundations, and serve as a reminder of covenants. As we stand on the precipice of Project Impact, and view all the rocks scattered around, it makes you think. Our school was built on the ultimate “Rock.” Our founding fathers no doubt prayed and agonized over purchasing a parcel of land which at the time was “way out” in Elmhurst. They had faith that “if we build it, they will come.” They were steadfast and all of us now bear witness to their fervor and devotion. Because of them, we have our memories that collectively build the TC story, just like those rocks I collect to mark a moment.

This issue will explore our “rocks,” both figuratively and literally. We’ll talk about the cornerstones at our school, taking a look back as we move forward. We will touch upon our Alumni Courtyard bricks and how they commemorate some of the people, families and stories at Timothy. Rocks represent memorials and we’ve got those too. We’ll “rock” you with some of the other fabulous stuff that has happened at TC since the last time you opened a Reflector.

Hopefully, this issue won’t make you feel like Charlie Brown as he woefully proclaimed “I’ve got a rock.” We are reminded in Luke 19:40 that if we don’t praise God, the rocks will cry out. And while I think it would be kind of cool to see rocks praising God, I know we are better equipped to handle that task.

So, let’s celebrate all those “rocks” in our lives! We can rejoice that our God is the Rock of our Salvation, our true foundation, never changing or moving. Take a moment to reminisce, remember God’s promises, look forward to the future and yes, even admire the beauty of rocks!

And, in case you are wondering, yep…still got my jar of sand from that beach. Because some memories are so precious, they need to be cherished and preserved.

You see, I have a strange habit.

It started back when I was a teen in the early 80’s. While we were growing up, we vacationed several summers on a particular beach in Florida. It held dear memories and one day, I decided I want to bring home a piece of it. So I collected a handful of sand in a baby food jar which then went on to hold a place of honor on my dresser for years. Now, if I’m on a hike I want to remember or feel inspired by a particularly beautiful place, I choose a rock and bring it home. It’s my way of marking a memory.

Editorial

Have you ever noticed how many rocks there are on Timothy’s campus? Some of the boulders are decorative or for landscaping purposes while others have been class gifts. We have cornerstones, alumni courtyard bricks and currently, the construction zone for Project Impact is filled with piles of rubble. Yep….rocks are everywhere and typically, usually overlooked. Lately, however, they’ve been making me think.

FROM THE MOUTHS OF BABES We recently asked some 5th graders their thoughts on Project Impact. Since they will be one of the first classes to use this brand new space, how are they feeling about it? Read below for answers.

Tessa Van Hout I think building a new middle school is a great idea!!! One reason is because it will have air conditioning. It will also be bigger and students will have more room. Another reason why the middle school would be a great idea is because we won’t have to share a gym or a cafeteria with the high school. We also will get bigger lockers. I think everybody is excited about it except the current 8th graders and the high school probably doesn’t care. The construction is loud but it is worth it. It can also be very surprising if you were totally spaced out there could be a loud noise and you get scared. I think that the new middle school will turn out really good no matter how many struggles we go through.

It’s going to be nice to have a new gym that is bigger and it’s going to have more seats for people. Plus, it gives the middle schoolers bigger classrooms and they won’t have to walk to the high school to have lunch.

Chloe Leppink Project Impact is a very big project that is going on at Timothy Christian. I think that it is a very good project too. It has a lot of benefits for the school.

Some of those benefits are a bigger gym, bigger science lab, and cafeteria. Also Project Impact might attract more people that have a middle school student because it is bigger.

Amelia van Stee It will be nice when I get into Middle School to have my own space without younger kids running around. It’s not going to be crampy in that hallway. With the old hallway empty, we can have more space for classrooms. As a 5th grader, I personally can’t wait to be in a new building in only its second year.

This Reflector is talking about how our school rocks. How does our school rock? Well, we are learning more about what Jesus is doing in our life and how he is preparing for our later lives. Without Christ we would not have been created. We are learning how God is working in my life and in other people’s lives.

Trey Slinkman Project Impact will give us more room to have our classes and we’ll be able to have a nice, new, clean building to work and have fun. It is also fun to see the construction outside and we’ll be able to see its progress. I think that Project Impact is important and will be a nice addition to our school. In the end, Project Impact is super important to our school and will do nothing but good.

Joanna Clohessy Project Impact is very important for our school because the middle school kids need a new building. They have been crammed into the elementary school for a long time. It’s time for the middle school kids to have their own building. There are a lot of people in middle school, and the cafeteria is also used for high school. Project impact, or the new middle school, will have an “only middle school” cafeteria. Project Impact will make a big Impact on TCS. Go Trojans!

I think that Project Impact is going to be awesome for us to have. We will be able to have a nice big gym, new classrooms, and bigger lockers! I think it will be great because we are doing more renovations on this school and it would be nice to have a separate middle school. We would also have a bigger school so that more kids would be able to go to our school. Most of the kids that are currently in middle school don’t like that the lockers are so small. In the new school we will have more room for bigger lockers; most students will enjoy it. The new school also consists of two floors, a separate room for every subject, and more. The new school is going to be great and I can’t wait until we can use it. TC rocks!

Chelsea Williams I am excited for Project Impact because whenever you hear the word “NEW” you get excited because it’s something that’s not used and it’s updated.

The most important thing I’m excited for are the lockers. The ones that we have now are really small and I’m hoping that the lockers are bigger. Also we get a cafeteria in the school we don’t have to eat in the classroom anymore and we won’t make a mess in the classroom. Another reason why I’m eager to go to middle school is that we have a bigger one and that we can walk up the stairs to get a little moving going in our body flowing. As I realize this I still have one more year until I get to go to the middle school. Also we get to use slightly newer things because the 6th graders get the school one year before us. The last important thing that I’m really anxious for is that our 5th grade will be the 2nd generation in the middle school and we might be in the history book or something. n

I am so excited to get a new building at our school.

Although I liked having a rock park I think this will be fun and cool too. We will get a less crowded school and a new gym. Being in fifth grade, I am excited that I will be one of the first grades to use this new middle school. I can’t wait to be in the new building!

I am excited for Project Impact because this will be an incredible thing for our school.

It will bring more students to our school. After this new Middle School is built it will make a big impact for our school. Our school will be better and even stronger together.

SPECIAL FEATURE THE BREAKDOWN

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

Although the job site will soon have walls going up, all of the work as of early October has been underground.

I am frequently asked the same question by folks about the project: “When are we going to get started?”

Actually we have been working hard since mid-summer, but we all want to see the structure taking form. I grow impatient at times with the deliberation during this part of the project, but I understand the importance of this ground work. A sure and firm foundation is critical.

There are nearly 300 geopiers in the ground that will sit underneath the footings and walls of the building. Each pier is 12’ deep and approximately 2’ wide. These deep pits are filled with rock which is then pounded with extreme pressure. (Check out geopiers online for a more thorough description. Fascinating!) The next step will be the footings and foundation—a lot of concrete! During this phase of the project, we cannot be too hasty or take short-cuts. We must get the foundation right!

By the fall of 2017 we will be ready to move into our new 7th/8th grade building, and our high school athletic teams will begin competition in the new gymnasium.

The building will be among the elite of any school in America. The TC community will enjoy this new facility for generations to come. I look forward to the “grand opening” and showing-off the design of the final product. Yet I will always remember the early stages of the project when all we had to show was rocks. I will always remember that the structure is built upon a foundation that has been robustly engineered to stand the test of time. The end result is only possible because of an extraordinary foundation.

Whether directly or indirectly, the Bible frequently addresses the importance of a firm foundation for life.

As a matter of fact, take a few moments to read and reflect upon Matthew 7:24-27. Read it on your own or with a friend or spouse or children or grandchildren.

You can count on Timothy Christian School to continue in biblical training for our students to win at life. Our culture is drifting further away from the Truth…and Christian education is more important than ever before.

Yes, we provide an excellent education. Yes, we strive for remarkable achievements. Yes, we provide a safe and loving environment. Yes, we teach with morality and ethics from a Christian worldview. Yes, we are training, equipping, and inspiring the next generation to go into the world and make a difference for Jesus Christ. YES, we are in the business of strong foundations.

Cornerstones When you enter the grade school building, you may have noticed several cornerstones built into the wall. Those rocks are a testament to how our school began and remember past buildings we’ve inhabited. Here’s a quick look back at where we’ve been as we move forward into the future.

In 1906, Dutch Immigrants who were seeking Christian education for their children began Ebenezer Christian Schools. Timothy Christian opened their doors just five years later, in 1911. Timothy and Ebenezer merged into one school in the Cicero area in 1946, after Ebenezer shut down. This cornerstone above is from the original Ebenezer building.

The monument below was taken from the building at 5900 West 14th Street in Cicero. Our grade school resided there from 1927-1972. Following the building of the grade school in 1972 and their move to Elmhurst, all three schools were now together on one campus.

The cornerstone below was located at our building at 1225 South 60th Street in Cicero. It served as our high school from 1952-1962. Then, when our HS moved to Elmhurst in 1962, the Middle School relocated to this space where they stayed from 1962-1970, before following the high school to the Elmhurst campus.

Praise God for these cornerstones that now serve as a reminder of God’s faithfulness to Timothy Christian Schools…….105 years old and counting! n

When I was informed of the theme for this edition of The Reflector, I was initially uncertain of how I could tie in an article on Project IMPACT. However, it quickly dawned on me that this is all we have on the construction site at the time of this writing—ROCKS.

By Scott Roelofs, Mock Trial Coach The TC Mock Trial team had another successful season, winning the state championship for the first time in 10 years.

The team started having meetings in August, in a season that stretched to May. They travelled to Harvard in the fall for a 2 day seminar to hone their skills. The state case involved a semi pro hockey game in which a player attacked another player with his stick. The Trojans finished first in all three of the biggest tournaments of

the season, a feat that had never been accomplished before. These were the DuPage County, Kane County, and Northwest Suburban Bar Association tourneys-the first two of which had over 40 teams compete. Then it was on to Champaign for the state tournament held at the University of Illinois Law School in April. After three intense trials TC was declared the champion, with St. Charles North placing second and Chicago Christian placing third. Because TC was the state champion they won the right to represent Illinois at the National Championships in Boise, Idaho. This was TC’s 7th trip to Nationals, having travelled in past years to Albuquerque, Columbia (South Carolina), New Orleans, Minneapolis, Orlando, and Oklahoma City.

The team had to prepare a whole new case for Nationals, one that was three times as long as the state case and used federal law instead of Illinois law. The Nationals case dealt with a sheep herder in Idaho suing a cattle rancher for poisoning his sheep. After a whirlwind 5 weeks of preparation, the Trojans headed to Boise.

Mock Trial Wins State, Competes At Nationals

Timothy competed against Connecticut, Alabama, Arkansas, and Ohio while at Nationals. The Trojans won two trials and lost two trials, good for 26th place in the nation. The Timothy team consisted of seniors Justin Banks, Caleb DeHaan, and Alex Zebutis. They were joined by juniors Grace Files, Trevor Hoogendoorn, Charles Hooker, Josh Kalapala, Nick Terpstra, and Elijah Tornow. Sophomores on the team were Liz Canfield, Catherine Carter, Austin Hoogendoorn, Becky Hanna, Olivia Schuringa, and Will Terpstra. Freshmen on the team were Seth Buikema, Will DeMey, and Adrian van Stee. The team that won the state championship was made up of Justin, Caleb, Alex, Grace, Trevor, Charles, Josh, Elijah, and Liz. The team at Nationals was made up of student lawyers Grace, Elijah, and Trevor. The student witnesses were Justin, Caleb, Alex, and Liz. The team is coached by Social Studies teacher Scott Roelofs and attorneys Cathy McNeil Stein and Nathaniel Reinsma. n

There were 43 state champion teams at the tournament, as well as teams from Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and South Korea. Trials at Nationals typically last 2 ½ hours instead of one hour state trials, so doing two trials in a day can be grueling.

“I enjoy working within the Timothy community to help families plan for and protect their financial futures.

Timothy elementary and middle school students are being inspired to become life-long readers in new ways, thanks to the TC Reads programs recently developed by librarians and teachers.

The goal of TC Reads is to encourage reading choice for students and to help them develop a lifelong practice of learning. Research shows that students who develop authentic reading interests and habits based on their reading choices are better readers throughout their lives.

To encourage students to read and explore books to find what interests them, each grade level sets a reading challenge, appropriate to the age of their students. Students may have individual goals, such as reading all of the Monarch award nominees or reading for 20 minutes every night. Grade levels may also work together as a class to reach a common goal. For example, grades 4, 5, and 6 are competing against each other to see who can read the most books in a quarter to earn a pajama day.

To inspire children to find reading material that captures their interest and gets them excited about reading, the library is constantly being restocked with new books, and classroom libraries are being expanded. Mrs. Larsen has

also created suggested book reading lists for grades 4-8 (available on the library’s homepage).

One of the most entertaining aspects of the TC Reads program happened last May, when Mrs. Larsen and Mrs. Craig rolled out the red carpet to host the first-ever Timothy Readers’ Choice Awards. The two awards shows – one for K-3 and one for 4-6—were designed to celebrate all students’ reading accomplishments as well as favorite books read throughout the year.

During the K-3 show, teachers announced the winners of each grade level’s favorite book of the year, and students cheered for beloved books as well as for those students who participated in the Monarch Book Challenge. Teachers also announced the results of the various other reading challenges that had occurred throughout the school year.

A highlight of the show was the premiere of five “book trailers”, created by sixth grade students for the five Best Book of the Year nominees. After learning how to use iMovie in computer class, sixth graders were invited to use iPads to create the trailers. These students spent many lunch recesses in the library – voluntarily – to write and direct these short movies.

Reading programs didn’t end when summer vacation started, however, thanks to summer reading bingo and challenges for grades K-3 and 4-8. Once school was back in session, students who completed their challenge were rewarded with invitations to a special evening of storytelling with Chris Fascione, who had the audience laughing and singing with his interactive folk tales and juggling.

As the sign on the library desk says, “Reading is for awesome people.” n

During the 4th-6th grade show, students were recognized for their participation in the Bluestem and Caudill reading programs, as well as their grade-level reading challenges. What made this program extra fun was that students played a big part in presenting and accepting awards for favorite books in seven different genres, which had been voted on by students a few weeks earlier. Many students contributed their musical and decorating talents, and one 6th grader even shared book-related jokes.

Boys Tennis 2016 Season Recap

by Keith Mills, Tennis Coach The Boys Tennis Team had a lot of pre-season hype with a strong returning line-up. They lived up to that

Varsity Baseball Wins Regional on Walk-Off Single by Jim Snoeyink, Baseball Coach with a walk-off single to left field to cap an exciting Regional Championship game.

Jimmy Allen pitched a great game for the Trojans, going 9 innings, allowing 6 hits and only 2 earned runs. Patrick Roelofs pitched the 10th and picked up the victory.

The Varsity Baseball Team won the regional for the first time since 2007 by beating a very good Lisle team 4 – 3 in 10 innings.

The Trojans fell behind 1 – 0 in the first inning but quickly came back with 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Patrick Roelofs drove in 1 run with a single (one of his 3 hits on the day) and Connor Gwaltney drove in the 2nd with a sacrifice fly.

the 6th inning when Lisle was able to push across 2 runs to take a 3 – 2 lead. However, Timothy was able to tie it in the bottom of the inning when Jimmy Allen reached first base on an error, stole 2nd, and scored on a single

The Trojans ended the season with a record of 16 – 13. The team was able to enjoy an excellent season despite losing Carter Johnson (cleanup hitter and #1 pitcher) for the last month of the season due to injury. The team was led in hitting by Jimmy Brush (.415), Jimmy Allen (.414), Carter Johnson (.377), Noah Marrera (.358), Josh Anderson (.337), Joey Davidson (.333), and Patrick Roelofs (.320.). n

The Trojans dominated conference opponents and all 8 starters were all-conference with 4 first places and one 2nd place finish. Nate and sophomore Joel Daniels won 1st and 2nd singles respectively while Mitch Evenhouse and Ben Lodewyk captured 2nd doubles (only 3 losses in 2 years on varsity), while Nick Silvia and Aaron VanderLinde took the 3rd doubles title.

The 1st doubles team of Jared Rhiner and Jack Wells avenged a conference finals loss by qualifying for the state tournament defeating York in the process. Trevor Hoogendoorn was also a key varsity contributor while also competing at Mock Trial Nationals. n

Girls Track

By Kevin Hackert, Girls Track Coach The Girls Track and Field team completed another great year lead by upper classmen Hannah Bosman and Olivia Hoekstra.

The team took 3rd at conference with eight different athletes attaining All-Conference Status.

The following week was our cold, rainy Sectional meet, complicated with the fact it was the day after prom. Still, the girls were focused on the goals they had set at the beginning of the season and they did not disappoint. In a field of twenty-five teams, Timothy took fourth place and qualified two relays to compete downstate.

The 4x400 was composed of Olivia Hoekstra, Rachel Stoll, Valerie Hoekstra, and Hannah Bosman. The

4x200 was composed of Olivia Hoekstra, Zoe Stanton, Alyse Schnurr, and Hannah Bosman. Both relays ran very well downstate, moving up in the rankings from the mid-20’s to top 12. The team was young, but very competitive which is encouraging for our Spring 2017 season. n

This past Spring, the 2016 Boys Track team had 2 athletes qualify for the state meet. Senior Eryk Biegunski (left) advanced out of the sectional meet by placing second in the 800 meter run. Sophomore Xavier Ross (right) advanced in the triple jump (1st place), the 300 intermediate hurdles (2nd place), and the 200 meter dash (3rd place).

and then some going undefeated with a 17-0 record, capturing the Metro Suburban Conference crown, Fenton Invite and 2nd place at the Lyons Township Sectional. Junior Nate Daniels played #1 singles all year and only lost once going into state play. His upset of a highly ranked player from Wheaton Academy was one of many highlights for him. He qualified for state with a 2nd place finish at the LT Sectional.

At the 2016 state meet held at Eastern Illinois University on May 26-28, Eryk ran one of his best races (2:05.64) and finished in 23rd place. Xavier had a career best in the triple jump (42’ 1”) and placed 15th. He also had a career best in the 300 hurdles (40.66) and placed 10th.

In the 200, Xavier had a solid race (23.21) and placed 15th.

SPECIAL FEATURE THE BREAKDOWN

Our High School Music Department took an exciting and educational trip to Disney World in Orlando, Florida during Spring Break 2016. The trip was open to all students in performing ensembles at TCHS. In all, 43 students, 3 directors, 3 chaperones, and 1 tour director filled a deluxe motorcoach to full capacity. Each performing ensemble was represented on the trip including students in Symphonic Band with Mr. Doug Pelt, String Orchestra with Mrs. Linda Fox, and Choir with Mrs. Erin Lanenga.

The trip lasted five days total, with two 24-hour bus trips and three full days in Disney theme parks. Each of the three ensembles participated in a 2.5 hour workshop with Disney clinicians. The band and orchestra students gave public performances on Disney properties, and everyone was able to enjoy the many attractions and shows available at Disney World.

Still full from Easter dinner, the students, directors, and chaperones gathered in the TCS parking lot Monday morning, March 28, to embark on this exciting journey.

Students loaded their instruments and luggage and then found their comfortable seats on the motorcoach. One special passenger was a harp, which fit nicely between two of the seats. Both Mrs. Lanenga and Mrs. Fox remarked how comfortable it was to nap next to the harp!

The group arrived in Orlando early Tuesday morning.

attended their workshop, entitled “You’re Instrumental,” to learn about performance techniques Disney professionals use as well as general concepts all successful musicians employ. The group made recordings of several famous Disney melodies and recorded the soundtrack to scenes from Beauty and the Beast on a commemorative DVD production.

Wednesday was “performance day” for the members of our instrumental ensembles. Both groups performed at E.P.C.O.T.’s Melody Gardens stage, located near the iconic Spaceship Earth geodesic sphere. The groups attracted many onlookers at this prime location as guests walked by and enjoyed their fantastic music. The students and teachers were also very thankful for sunny and ‘not-toohot’ weather for the performances.

The Symphonic Band performance included Robert W. Smith’s “Where the Black Hawk Soars” (our small tribute to our world champion Chicago Blackhawks). They also performed spirited selections by Soviet composers with “Galop” by Dmitri Shostakovich as well as a march by Sergei Prokofiev. The biggest crowd-pleaser, however, was a medley of Klaus Badlet’s music from the hit Disney film Pirates of the Caribbean.

Our String Orchestra stayed true to the Disney theme as well with a medley of “A Whole New World” from Aladdin and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King. The group really got the crowd going with the can-can melody from Jacques Offenbach’s “Infernal

The rest of the day was spent at E.P.C.O.T. where students and adults rode exciting rides like Test Track and sampled international food in the World Showcase. (Mrs. Lanenga even got Mr. Pelt to eat sushi!) The evening concluded with the Illuminations laser and fireworks show around the main lagoon.

Thursday morning, the Band students awoke very early and packed their belongings to attend their “You’re Instrumental” workshop. Despite the early hour, the musicians performed admirably, learning melodies like “Who’s Afraid of the Big Band Wolf,” Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from Mary Poppins, and the main themes from Star Wars. The students then created a DVD by recording a soundtrack to the closing scene from Frozen.

After picking up the other members of our group, the tour bus dropped everyone off at Disney’s Magic Kingdom for a fun-filled day. They once again enjoyed exceptional weather and wonderful attractions.

Mid-way through the day, the choir students headed over to their workshop to learn about the various skills Disney performers need to possess in order to

be successful. The students worked with a clinician to develop vocal style, learn intricate sequences of dance moves, and perform voice-overs for film. The choir students created a soundtrack to the opening sequence from The Lion King complete with creative animal noises performed by our very own students.

The students (and adults) were exhausted but thankful for the whirlwind three days in the Disney parks. After a rather uneventful bus ride, they arrived safely back at TCS Friday evening, April 1.

The group would like to recognize Miss Erin Huntsberry from Entourage Management for doing an amazing job coordinating the many details of the trip. The directors would also like to thank the adult chaperones, Candy Smith and Tina and Craig Marousek, who bravely went along on this journey and helped in many ways throughout the trip.

The performers represented our music department and our school very well, learned a lot about becoming better musicians, and developed life-long friendships and memories! n

Danny Huizinga (’11) met fiancé Madeleine Cooney at an Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) conference in Phoenix, AZ. They plan to get married in Chicago next summer and live in Boston, Chicago, or DC. Emma Vander Woude (’11) was engaged to fiancé Owen Moynihan on August 6. They are planning an August 2017 wedding. Owen is an accountant at Clifton Larson Allen in Oak Brook, and Emma is currently working as an Executive Assistant for Optima, Inc. in Glencoe, IL. Kendall Evenhouse (’12) was engaged on July 9, 2016 in Holland, Michigan to Kevin Swenson. They plan to be

Staci Vander Naald (’12) became engaged to Scott Bryant on March 4, 2016. They are graduating from Huntington University in May 2017 and the wedding is July 1, 2017. They plan to live in the western suburbs of Chicago.

Amber Scheidt (’12) & Aaron Snoeyink (’12) were engaged on August 14, 2016. They are planning a 2017 summer wedding. Amber is an academic aide at Timothy Christian and Aaron is employed by Wayfair.

Morgan DeVries (’13) is engaged to Zack Williams who she met when she was freshman at Calvin College and he was a senior at Hope College. They are getting married on July 22, 2017 in downtown Chicago. They plan to live in Holland, Michigan.

Kyle Groters (’13) proposed to Grace Kimball in downtown Chicago just off of the lakeshore on April 1st. They met at Moody Bible Institute through mutual friends and are planning a wedding in June 2017.

Evan Washington (’89) and Kurt Williams (’89) reconnected at their 20th high school reunion. Six years later to the day of the reunion, on October 10, 2015, they were wed in Burr Ridge, Illinois. They currently reside in Brookfield, Illinois.

Nathan Middel (’11) met Kayla Vander Zee at her cousin’s cottage in Indiana through a mutual friend. They plan to wed in August of 2017. She is currently in grad school and Nathan is currently working at Fidelity Investments in Naperville. They plan to remain in the western suburbs after they wed.

Ryan DeGroot (’12) & Emily Strikwerda met as freshman at Calvin College. They were engaged on July 3 in Saugatuck Dunes State Park. They are planning a May 2017 wedding. They plan to live in Grand Rapids, MI, where Ryan works as a civil engineer and Emily works as an accountant.

Troy Thomas (’05) met his fiancé Kendra Saffo when they were in 5th grade. They became friends and had little crushes on each other but lost touch around 8th grade. 15 or 16 years later, Troy saw a picture she posted on Facebook and ended up sending her a message just to say hello. They started talking and the rest is history. On April 9th, 2016, Troy got on one knee and ask Kendra if she would do him the honor of being his wife and she said yes. A 2017 wedding is being planned.

He hopes to work as a software engineer or in quantitative finance and Lauren is working in academic publishing.

David Stremler (’08) wed Ellen Radandt on September 24. The wedding was held outdoors on the shores of Lake Michigan, in Charlevoix, Michigan. They are living in Grand Rapids where Ellen just started her position as the assistant Softball Coach at Hope College. n

Leaving a Legacy

I recently took a walk in the courtyard by the High School Science Building with the sole purpose to quickly photograph a few of the bricks. My plan was to include them an in article I would write about why to purchase a brick.

Being a staff member, I’ve walked through that space quite frequently. However, on this warm fall day, I slowly lingered as I read each brick and thought about each family, person or memory that is memorialized in this spot.

There were bricks honoring favorite teachers, a favorite Bible verse from TC families, bricks remembering friends who have entered glory, student names and graduating year and even some funny quotes! Several bricks thanked their parents for honoring Christian education.

These “rocks” tell stories. Families who have sacrificed to send their kids to Timothy, teachers who have made an impact on students’ lives, special memories, or just wanting to be a “part” of the TC campus.

So, this brings me back to the initial purpose of this piece….buying a brick. Why not add your “rock” to the Timothy story in the Alumni courtyard? No, you don’t need to be an alumni. We have plenty of space available and would love to fill the courtyard with more pieces of our combined history. Buy a brick with your family name. Remember someone. Thank someone. Give someone a smile.
