INTRODRUCTION

Lyricism & Contemporary Art A L I C E C A R P E N T E R . N E I L R I L E Y . MA RY J A N E WA R D

“Lyric” is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as “(of poetry) expressing the writer’s emotions (2)meant to be sung; songlike” There is a lyricism and acuity of expression in these artists’ works which is a function of their extraordinary command of their media and the organic creativity of their compositions. A quiet emotional resonance emanates from these drawings, watercolors, monotypes, and paintings which transcends description. These artists simultaneously evoke the beauty and resonance of nature, like the lilting song of a Gold Finch.

NEIL RILEY

Neil Riley was an associate professor of painting and drawing at Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio for nine years and also spends much of his time painting in Vermont. He has been a lecturer at Dartmouth College and the Jerusalem Studio School. His awards include a Fulbright Fellowship to Italy and a residency at the Klots Chateau in Rochefort-en-Terre, France. He exhibited his work at Keny Galleries since 200* in Columbus, Ohio.

Neil Riley is a “painter’s painter” whose art is admired, studied and owned by many artists in this region and beyond. The artist’s subtle, often calligraphic, brush work and atmospheric nuances which are on the cusp of abstraction, yet in the representational context of a landscape , or the interior or facade of a home epitomizes lyricism in painting . His mastery of capturing the underlying physical and emotional cadence of his subject is extraordinary. He and I both admire the ethereal art of Edwin Dickinson.

“These vagaries of nature have a direct influence on work done in the field. When a painting is well exectuted, these unpredicatable natural elements often lend a distinct intimacy and freshness to the work. Excerpt from (Northern Woodlands) ‘Outdoor Palette: Neil Riley’ by Adlaine Tyrol Winter 2018 Issue

Mary Jane Ward is a draftswoman and painter, and lives in Columbus, Ohio, where she works from her studio at Milo Arts. Mary Jane had a nine year career as a professional dancer, dancing for classical ballet companies as well as small modern companies, individual choreographers and interdisciplinary projects. She has worked with her partner Amery Kessler, assisting with aspects of his interactive, relational artworks. She studied drawing and painting at the Grand Central Atelier in New York City, under Jacob Collins from 2012-2015. The program is a collaborative studio space, pursuing the methodology of historic ateliers to create drawing, painting and sculpture from life. Mary Jane was accepted into The Hudson River Fellowship in 2015. In 2017 she was one of three artists in residence at the Highlands Nature Sanctuary, in Bainbridge, Ohio. She is the recipient of several Artists in the Community grants from the Greater Columbus Arts Council, and serves as a Trustee for the Ohio Plein Air Society. Mary Jane’s work has been exhibited at Eleventh Street Arts in New York City, The Columbus Cultural Arts Center, The Columbus Museum of Art, The Riffe Gallery (Columbus, OH), The Springfield Museum of Art (Springfield, OH), The Southern Ohio Museum (Portsmouth, OH), and Keny Galleries (Columbus, OH). She is represented by Keny Galleries. Mary Jane teaches portrait, figure, and landscape painting classes at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center. There is a delicate lyricism that pervades the landscape and still life drawings and paintings of Mary Jane Ward that belies her extraordinary draftsmanship. These works have some characteristics of the fine Hudon River School drawings and oil sketches of John Frederick Kensett and Jasper Cropsey. Her nudes have a curvilinear lyricism and rich physicality of form. that evokes the paint handling in Frank Duveneck’s early Munich school figurative paintings.
