what’s in that stuff?

TECH

The Tech Behind Bringing winter to the WINTERLESS

L

os Angeles has only seen snow 10 times in the last (almost) 100 years … now it falls twice a night at The Grove. Traditionally those who live in warm places like southern California or southern Florida could only sigh at images of outdoor ice skaters at Rockefeller Center in New York or rely on holiday movies to get that snowy winter wonderland feel . But now new technologies are bringing winter to the winterless. So what’s in that stuff anyway and how do they do it? Magic Snow, who is responsible for the snowfall at the Grove, The Americana in Glendale and over 20 major shopping centers and venues worldwide, has spent the last ten years not only perfecting its technology but bringing it to the winterless for over 10 years. What’s the secret? The falling snow is “a light, water-based foam that when applied to a high-powered blower, dries out the water and creates a light foam puff that floats through the air,” magic snow owner Adam Williams explains. The on-the-ground snow “is made by crushing 300-pound blocks of ice into a fine powder and shooting it out of a high-pressure hose onto the ground.” This year Mattel paid Magic Snow to cover seven Los Angeles elementary schools with 190 tons of snow! SnowMagic Entertainment USA, Inc. uses a technology originally developed and patented by a Japanese company. In 1993, SnowMagic manufactured the world’s

first temperature independent snow creating system called ICS™. The ICS system freezes water to create tiny snow crystals. Utilizing controlled and cooled forced air technology, the snow crystals are blown out with explosive force. Unlike traditional snowmaking equipment that works only at temperatures significantly below 32F, snow can be made regardless of temperature; uses no chemicals in its process; and creates environmentally friendly snow that can be recycled and reused after melting, whether indoors or outdoors. SnowMagic Entertainment currently makes it snow at locations such as Legoland in San Diego, CA Making an ice rink isn’t as simple as flooding the floor with gallons of water, and its even more complicated if you don’t have anywhere near the 32 degree temperature required to freeze water, but for the technology you may not have to look further than your own refrigerator. Outdoor rinks in warm climates often use refrigerated coils under slabs of specially designed floor to freeze water poured on top. Others utilize synthetic materials, such as engineered high density polymer ethylene, that don’t require water at all but mimic a refrigerated or frozen ice surface. Whether you are playing ice hockey, figure skating, or just skating leisurely, you can stop, turn, pivot, push, glide, skate backwards, stick handle, pass or shoot a puck as if you were on a refrigerated or frozen ice surface.

8 THINGS

NOT TO SAY ON YOUR COLLEGE ESSAY 01

DON’T WHINE

Nobody likes a cry baby. No matter how true or heartbreaking your story is, whining about your circumstances instead of explaining why/how you overcame them just makes it seem like you want pity. (ex, don’t write: “My mom started working more hours because my parents had money issues. I had to quit the cheerleading squad to watch my baby brother. It was sad that I had to miss out on competing on the state championship but family comes first”) Instead show admissions boards how you overcame obstacles and impress them with your drive and determination.

02

DON’T FOLLOW THE RULES

This is your essay, to do with as you see fit. It is a written expression of yourself, boiled down to a page or two. Originality and Creativity are key. One of the biggest mistakes that students make when writing their college admission essay is that they think there is some particular formula they must follow, or that there are certain things which must be said. This is absolutely not the case. The college essay is not the same kind of essay that you write for your high school English teacher, it does not have to have the typical essay introduction, which provides a thesis statement. Your college admission essay is yours to write as you see fit. Don’t let yourself think that you have to follow certain patterns or rules.

03

DON’T GET WEIRD

Covering your essay in glitter or perfume, including a link to a YouTube video of yourself performing “Jackass” worthy stunts, or writing the entire essay in Pig Latin. Are absolute no-no’s. You want to be unique, but you still need the admissions counselors to take you seriously (and not be afraid of you).

04

DON’T BE BORING

Trying to be overly proper or trying to impress by using a ton of huge words to seem intellectual can be a drag. If you wouldn’t want to read your essay, there is a chance no one else will either. It’s kind of like being on a date, if you want to be asked out again then you need to be smart, funny, nice, caring, unique and YOURSELF; not boring. You also want to have an opinion, not just be a bland, non-thinking robot. Would you want to talk to that person again? I think not.

“This is NOT the same kind of essay that you write for your high school Englis teacher ... [it] is yours to write as you see fit”

05

DON’T BLEND IN

Show the admissions reader that you are a real person, with personality. Writing with your own personaility (honesty, humor, writing the way you talk, showing how you think can help you create a voice.) Open yourself up. What is it about you that truly makes you you? What is that thing that makes you unique? What is the best way to put that out there? Remember, though, that you are competing with thousands of other students in your essay. You might have a great story about your first day at school. But how many students are also going to have stories about their first day at school? This is not to say it is necessarily a bad topic, but you should try to go for things that are not going to be commonly discussed to make you particularly stand out.

06

DON’T REPEAT YOURSELF

Students sometimes repeat themselves in the college essay “just to be safe.” But, reading the same thing twice is boring and admissions officers have already read, or will read, the rest of your application. Trust them to do their job and read the application as thoroughly as necessary. Give them some insight into your motivations and how they indicate your abilities. If you mentioned something briefly on the application, you can go into it in more detail in the essay, but don’t simply regurgitate the same information verbatim .

07

DON’T USE SPELL CHECK

Spelling and grammar are IMPORTANT, and your college essay should be perfect when it comes to both. Computers can be very useful in correcting grammar and spelling, but they are often wrong. For example, take the word “there” (or “their” or “they’re”). All of these words sound the same, but they all have very different meanings. If you use the wrong word in the wrong place, the computer may not pick up on it but you’ll look like you need another year with your fourth grade grammar teacher. Edit your essay yourself, and try to have other people edit it for you. This is a good idea not just grammatically, but to see how the entire essay reads and flows. Following advice from others is a great way to improve your essay and make it more readable. But don’t just write what everyone else wants you to write, and concentrate on what you want to write.

08

DON’T BE FAKE

It’s tempting, but don’t misrepresent your activities and achievements. If you graduated in the middle of your class and have no extracurriculars or recommendations to support it don’t write “I was one of the top students in my school and hope to find a cure for cancer or negotiate world piece and end world poverty.”

naughty vs nice | TOP CELEBRITY MOMENTS OF 2012

P

art of the facing the coming new year is taking a look back at the last 365 days of your life. If you’re a celebrity then the entire world will likely look back at how you spent your year. Celebrities often walk the tightrope between naughty and nice, some flip flop back and forth so frequently that even Santa probably has a hard time keeping up. Some were naughty, some were nice, but all made headlines, broke boundaries and made moments to remember. Our top twelve naughty vs. nice celebrity moments of 2012.

OBAMA RE-ELECTED With 2012 being the year of the presidential race between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney celebrities made headlines. From hip hop’s power couple Jay-Z and Beyonce hosting a mega nice fundraiser, to that weird moment when Nicki Minaj outed herself as a conservative, then took it back there were plenty of moments where celebrity and politics came together (or straight up collided). Mitt Romney called Obama supporters “naughty” (remember that whole 47% thing) but clearly most of the country thought Obama was nice.

01

HURRICANE SANDY RELIEF 04 CONCERT Legends The Rolling Stones join Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, Kanye West, the Who, Chris Martin, Alicia Keys, Dave Grohl and more for “121212: The Concert for Sandy Relief,” . Carried on dozens of broadcast and cable TV channels nationally and internationally, Radio stations and streamed on various websites the show was accessible to 2 billion people worldwide as a benefit for the victims of hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic hurricane on record that caused 65.6 Billion Dollars in damage in October. Bringing rock and roll legends to benefit survivors. Nice.. ELMO - SAY IT AIN’T SO! Can a puppet 07 survive a sex scandal? No one really knows, but fans of the beloved furry red monster Elmo hope so. Puppeteer Kevin Clash has been accused of seriously naughty behavior which forced him to resign as Sesame Street’s voice of Elmo. In a confusing turn of his first accuser recanted his story, and then renewed his accusations. Two more accusers then sprang up. We’re not sure how all of this is going to work out, but we miss Elmo already! 2 1/2 MEN - MINUS THE HALF? At the annual PaleyFest held in Los Angeles, California, in 2012, Angus T. Jones (who makes reportedly $300,000 per episode of Two and a Half Men (nice!) admitted to not being comfortable taking on his new, more grown-up storylines, explaining the awkwardness behind doing the “adult thing” though not an adult. In fall of 2012, Jones made statements critical of Two and a Half Men. He called himself a “paid hypocrite” because his beliefs conflict with his job as an actor in the show’s adult themes. He described his path to a new faith in detail during an interview with Seventh-day Adventist-sponsored Voice of Prophecy in October 2012. In November, his views gained attention of the media after Jones appeared in a video. Jones said he had been baptized and no longer wanted to appear on Two and a Half Men, calling the show “filth” and saying it conflicted with his religious views. Show creators cried “naughty” and Jones issued a statement the next day clarifying his position. Outing the show that made you a millionaire on YouTube?naughty. Standing up for your beliefs? Nice.

WHITNEY HOUSTON DIES Whitney Houston’s accidental death in February was voted one of the most shocking celebrity headlines in the first half of 2012. As music’s biggest names began to gather at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., for record exec Clive Davis’s annual pre-Grammy party, Whitney was discovered upstairs, face down in 13-inches of water in the bathtub of her room. An autopsy showed the troubled “I Will Always Love You” singer died of accidental drowning, though cocaine use and heart disease were also contributing factors.

02

THE FIRST BABY OF HIP HOP Power couple Jay-Z and Beyonce welcomed their first child Blue Ivy Carter into the world in January. Jay then released the song Glory, dedicated to Blue Ivy, whose cries were featured on the end of the track and was credited on the song making her the youngest person ever to appear on a Billboard chart at the age of 2 days old. Rumors swirled that Jay and B spent $1.3 million to rent an entire floor of the Hospital for privacy -and that Blue’s birth prevented other families from visiting their newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit. While those rumors been denied, its still possible there was some divalicious – naughtiness in the delivery room … but the baby pics were super nice.

05

C.BREEZY DRAKE BRAWL C.Breezy is no stranger to naughty behavior, so we figure he probably hasn’t been on Santa’s list in awhile; this year is likely to follow suit. Instead of popping bottles like they usually would while at a club, Drake and Chris Brown (or more specifically their entourages) began throwing bottles at one another in a New York City nightclub over what else a girl (possibly on-again girlfriend Rihanna to be precise). Brown later posted a photo of a gash on his chin followed by a series of tweets . This feud is still on going and doesn’t look like it will be cleared up anytime soon but it wasn’t Chris Brown’s only feud. He also ended up in a twitter war with comedian Jenny Johnson which ended when CB cancelled his twitter account (we figure his publicist FINALLY figured out his password.

08

TUPAC RESURRECTED Snoop Dogg surprised the audience at the 2012 Coachella festival with a guest appearance from none other than the late, great Tupac Shakur. The rapper appeared via hologram joining Snoop on 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted and performing Hail Mary. This is what happens when you invite rappers to headline Coachella: They start resurrecting legends. Some found it strange others found it nice; but people mostly wondered what dead celebs might be headlining tours in 2013.

11

FRANK OCEAN COMES OUT Frank Ocean, the sometimes rapping/always singing member of Odd Future, made the boldest announcement in recent music history in July when he posted a letter on his Tumblr page that he had a relationship with a man. Whether that means he’s gay or bisexual is still up for debate, but what’s not questionable is that he shocked hip-hop to the core. Frank’s coming out even made mainstream news as US target stores refused to stock his album claiming it was due to the release being iTunes exclusive for a week, but critics yelled naughty and homophobic. Reactions ranged from nice, to naughty to downright ugly but in the end his album dropped at # 2 on Billboard so clearly a lot of people thought it was nice.

12

03

WOMEN’S GYMNASTS WIN GOLD

U.S. athletes left the London Olympics with a total of 104 medals (46 gold, 29 silver and 29 bronze), including men’s and women’s basketball, Ryan Lochte, who won five medals, Serena Williams and swimmer Michael Phelps, who emerged as the mostdecorated athlete in Olympic history. But the world’s hearts were captured gymnast Gabby Douglas and her U.S. Olympic women’s gymnastics teammates (known as the Fierce Five) who were even featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. KRISTEN STEWART CHEATS We still can’t believe Kristen Stewart cheated on Robert Pattinson. What would Edward and Bella say? The 22-year-old actress was very naughty getting caught kissing and her married “Snow White and the Huntsman” director, Rupert Sanders, in mid-July. The whole thing put her relationship with Rob on the skids and the couple even moved out of the Los Angeles home they shared. Some fans said foul thinking the whole thing was a publicity stunt. Whether it was or wasn’t less than three months later, Kristen and Rob had worked it out -- just in time for their global press tour for “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2” Nice!

06

REALITY TV TURNS UP THE RACHET If at all possible reality TV seemed to get even more rachet than ever making shocking waves all year long on and off the screen. MTV announced that after three years and six seasons the original naughty cast, “Jersey Shore” was finally coming to an end. Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino was treated for a prescriptiondrug problem. Deena was never on the wagon at all. The meatball was naughty and arrested for disorderly conduct after drunkenly dancing in the streets in June. And Snooki announced she was pregnant with mini-Snooki – shocking but nice. Troubled “Teen Mom” star Amber Portwood was arrested for violating the terms of her probation (sooo naughty Amber). A judge gave Amber the option to complete a court-ordered rehab program rather than serve time behind bars (which was nice), but the reality star opted to take the five-year prison sentence, which she began serving in June. “I felt like I’d rather do my time and get it over with,” she said. We’re not so sure about her logic, but its nice she’s getting help one way or the other! Just a month after they tied the knot, Chad Ochocino was arrested for domestic violence when he head-butted Evelyn during an argument causing their show to be immediately shelved by VH1, Chad’s contract with the Dolphins was canceled, and shortly after, Evelyn filed for divorce. Love and Hip Hop introduced the world to “Steebie J” and Joceline who were both very naughty but left plenty of fans eagerly awaiting season 2 which (if rachet is your thing) should be crazy nice.

NIVKI MINSJ GOES BERSERK It’s hard to deny Nicki Minaj‘s impact on music, television and just about every other genre of entertainment she has touched. Some consider her success nice and others think antics displayed by her naughty side mean 2012 is the year Nicki Minaj finally lost her mind. Either way 2012 was a year Nicki definitely kept the world guessing. She signed a monstrous deal as the face of Pepsi, which was nice, then there was that weird thing where she name dropped Mitt Romney in a freestyle; she was banned from BET; but then the same video got 4.8million views on Vevo. She signed up as a judge on American Idol, but had a nasty naughty fight with Mariah where she basically went berserk, but even TMZ called that nice. CELEBRITYHIGHMAG.COM DECEMBER 2012 13

>

The daughter of businessman, music mogul and philanthropist Percy Miller (a.k.a. Master P) and the little sister of Romeo Miller (a.k.a. Lil Romeo), Cymphonique has not only craved out her own identity, but is taking Hollywood and the music industry by storm! As a writer, singer, actress and philanthropist, Cymphonique built her diverse R&B, Pop and Hip-Hop fan base through the Internet before taking her music career mainstream. At such a young age, this impressive teen has created her own brand and identity in the entertainment world. The No Limit Forever Music recording artist and vocalist has already been compared to the likes of Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Mariah Carey. CH: What was it like growing up where everyone knew your brother Lil Romeo & your father Master P CM: Its crazy because my dad has 5 Grammys, sold 75 million records & my brother has topped Billboard charts and sold 10 million records. Ever since I was little, I could remember that anywhere and everywhere we would go, fans would recognize them, ask for autographs or take pictures. It happened so often that I thought it was normal. There are definitely a lot of people who try to befriend you for the wrong reasons, but thats why I like to take my time making real friends. But at the end of the day, they are just my dad and brother whom I love. CH: What is a typical day for you in your show How to Rock? CM: On a typical day, it can start as early as 5am. As soon as I get to set, I begin schoolwork with my teacher. Then block & rehearse scenes on camera, pick outfits from wardrobe, and rehearse dance choreography. Its so exciting when we film in front of a live audience . Then , after all the hard work and fun to end the day with some frozen yogurt from the fro-yo machine we have on set.

your uniqueness is what makes you beautiful. I also have the Fabulous Girls Foundation, which I started, with my two best friends, Kiley and Alexya, where we help raise awareness to kids with cancer. We bring BYOU beanies and t-shirts to the hospitals to give to the patients that we visit. Some patients have been in the hospitals for weeks, sometimes months. We enjoy singing to them, bringing them gifts, putting a smile on their faces and just bringing love and hope. CH: You have an album dropping next year, what can you share with us about the album? CM: My album title is very raw and honest. I like to write a lot of my own songs and be a part of the creative process. I also take my vocal craft very seriously. Even though Im young I understand the importance of putting out good music that has feeling and soul in it. I want to be able to touch people through my music, make them dance, reminisce, think and just make a positive impact on people. CH: Do you play any sports, or what do you do on your free time? CM: Kickboxing has always been my favorite sport. I used to compete at tournaments. I even like to train for fun at home with my big brother, Veno. I love going to the beach, sit and lay in the warm sand. And I just love swimming in the ocean. I also like to get lost in a good book or write poems of my own. Our family has the best board game collection and we always watch movies together -- classics and scary movies are the best. CH: Do you have any future projects for next year that your fans may be unaware of?

CH: You are the spokesperson for BYOU, Be Your Own You, how did that happen?

CM: Yes, I’m currently working on an action film where I get to do kickboxing. I’m excited for it to shock my fans in good way. I’m also opening up a performing arts school with Let The Kids Grow Foundation where kids can take classes for free.

CM: Being in the entertainment industry, I know the pressure that girls face of having to be a certain way or look a certain way. BYOU is all about girl empowerment; Be who you truly are, not what others want you to be and understanding that

CH: Describe yourself, who is Cymphonique Miller?

CM: My friends say that I always see the glass half full. I must admit, I’m very optimistic, but its only because I truly believe that happiness is a choice. I’m most happy when I can encourage or help someone. I think we all have talents and gifts that we should use to help the people around us. I like to have fun, be silly and be creative. You just have to live your life to the fullest and entertaining is my passion.

CH: Was it hard to getting where you are now? What challenges did you face? CM: Heck yes, it takes so much hard work, dedication, patience, persistence, determination and vision. Many times things won’t go as planned and mistakes are made. But you cant give up, you’ve got to stay focused on your vision. I choose to learn from my mistakes and put my trust in God.

CH: How is school for you? CM: My parents take education seriously. I’m an honor student and a grade ahead in Math. My schedule can get really hectic and the projects can get tough. But I’ve learned to push through. Calendars, day planners, notebooks and voice memos are your best friend . Prioritizing and managing my time is critical.

Be who you truly are, not what others want you to be and understanding that your uniqueness is what makes you beautiful.

CH: What advice does your family give you about the industry? CM: Never lower your values or change who you are for anyone. My dad raised us to always put God 1st, family and then education at the top of our priorities. CH: Do you have any plans on furthering your education? CM: College is most definitely in my future. If Romeo can do it, so can I. CH: What is your biggest pet peeve about the industry?

CH: How is your experience with the music industry now? CM: Although I spend so much time in the recording studio, I’m having a lot of fun and just enjoying myself. I love to make real music for my fans. I feel that being sixteen is flipping a new chapter not only in my personal life but in my music as well.

put the practice in for me. Plus, you have to work twice as hard because people pre-judge you just for being related to someone famous. But I don’t mind because I truly love what I do and my actions speak for themselves.

I just keep working hard, do what I can and let God do the rest. It also takes a lot of sacrifice. You can’t just hangout or party all the time with friends. Although my dad is famous, successful, and can open some doors for me, I have to keep those doors open with my own skills, talents and hard work because he can’t sing, dance or act for me, nor can he

CM: So many people are just in it for money or fame. Yes, it’s a part of the industry, but it isn’t everything. Material things don’t last forever.

he 16-year-old, who captivated the country at the 2012 London Olympics as she flew high as the AllAround Gold Medal winner. She made history, becoming the first US gymnast to take home a team and an individual gold medal in the same games and is also the first woman of color and the first African-American gymnast in Olympic history to become the individual all-around champion. But the road to gold wasn’t easy or simple. Even aside from the intense training and sacrifice required of an elite athlete like Douglas, she encountered bullying and racism as an African-America gymnast, she dealt with heartache, isolation, homesickness, multiple injuries and even the issues associated with coming from a single parent home - – all of which led Douglas to consider leaving gymnastics forever only seven months before the London Olympics. So how does a teen girl turn all of those obstacles into Olympic gold? Douglas believes that her own success is directly proportional to the immense support of her family, friends, and faith in God. This theme is at the heart of her debut memoir, Grace, Gold & Glory: My Leap of Faith, coming to bookstores nationwide on Dec. 4, 2012. “Even before I competed in the Olympics, I always wanted to write a book,” says

Douglas. “Of course, there’ll be a lot of stories about gymnastics, but the book will also be about how much my family and I have overcome during our journey. It hasn’t been easy. I want people to read my story and say, ‘If Gabby can do it, I can do it, too. Anything is possible.’” The youngest of four siblings, Douglas shares poignant, often humorous stories from her childhood as she talks candidly about the obstacles faced along her road toward the world gymnastics stage. Douglas

“It hasn’t been easy. I want people to read my story and say, ‘if Gabby can do it, I can do it too. Anything is possible.” also opens up for the first time about her father’s role in her life. She tells her story of faith, perseverance, and determination, demonstrating you can reach your dreams if you let yourself soar. This winter Gabrielle Douglas also plans to

join teammates, Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber with special musical guest and rising pop stars Megan & Liz. On Teen Choice Live! Tour. The Tour will deliver Gabrielle, Aly and Jordyn performing awe-inspiring routines with an all-star dance and cheer cast. Special guest appearances by TEEN CHOICE winners, pop music stars and celebrities across all spectrums “I’m so excited to go on a tour with Aly, Jordyn, Megan and Liz and bring our fans so many of our favorite things in one glamfilled event. I love the TEEN CHOICE awards and always get excited to see who gets the surfboard!” said Gabrielle Douglas, about appearing on the tour. The three Olympic superstars all played a vital role in American women’s dominance at the 2012 London Olympics and won hearts across America when they brought home the U.S. Gymnastics Gold for the first time in 16 years. Their triumphant return after wowing the world in London has meant a whirlwind of appearances celebrating America’s newest teen celebrities. Since her Olympic triumph, Gabrielle has used her platform to inspire millions with a powerful message: With hard work and persistence, any dream is possible. “With strong faith in God and some serious determination, every dream is possible,” says Douglas. “I hope this book inspires others to go for their biggest dreams.”

TRUE STORIES

REVEALED:

THE PRESSURE TO TAKE

STUDY DRUGS I by taylor james

Unfortunately it was everything people said it was. It didn’t make me any smarter or put the ’ve always been one of the “smart” kids. I’ve always done my homework, paid attention in class answers in my head, but I wasn’t sleepy even though I’d been up for 22 hours, I was alert, I was and generally had enough determination and discipline to earn A’s in the classes I took; even focused and the information I read came in clear and stuck. It was like me … 2.0. That night when I had to put in extra work to get them. With senior year and college applications on the I finished my homework and the next night’s too and for the first time in a long while, the idea of horizon I knew the drill; go hard on the AP classes and load up on extracurricular activities. The failure was a distant memory. After that, I began to use Adderall whenever I was in a crunch or pressure was starting to mount for a lot of kids in my class. The group of honors students in had a lot of studying to do. I also used it to help me focus during exams. my grade was small but competitive. There were people who would try to get over the hump by taking unprescribed A.D.D. or A.D.H.D. medications like Adderall or trying to scam their way The funny part was my parents seemed extra happy about the A’s I was bringing home. But into a “legitimate” prescription. From what I’d heard it was equally easy to get a doctor or a friend maybe it only seemed that way because for the first time ever I wasn’t proud of my grades. I to give you pills. Friends and even my brother at Cal Tech suggested I take them, but I figured felt like I had cheated; done something that wasn’t right to get what I thought I wanted and then people like me didn’t need Adderall to get by. I thought that was for some of my less motivated ended up not being happy when I got it because of how I’d gotten it. In a sense I think I started classmates. It was frustrating that these ‘study drugs’ worked and I watched people who I knew to hate my parents a little bit because while they said “don’t do drugs” from their mouths it was took them jump ahead of me in our class rank. But, I didn’t believe it was the right thing to do; like their expectations and actions said “win at all costs.” It was it was like cheating so I always turned it down when people my fault. They didn’t give me the pills or even know offered it to me. It wasn’t that they weren’t smart too; they watched I that g frustratin was “It I was taking them, but the pressure from them on were, but it was kind of like an athlete taking steroids to top of school didn’t help. people who I knew took them jump gain muscle. I thought I was smart enough to make it on my own I always had and that’s what I was going Yes my heart would race when I’d take a pill ahead of me in our class rank” to do through senior year. and of course I’d crash after but I didn’t really acknowlHowever, I underestimated the pressure. Somewhere between the SATs, my 8 page AP History paper and AP Calculus I started to crack. There just didn’t seem to be enough hours in the day to get everything done and for the first time in my life I just knew I was going to (gulp) FAIL. Maybe I panicked, but I told myself I just had to do what I had to do. Failure was absolutely not an option. What would my parents say? My teachers? Even my other classmates? What happened if I couldn’t get into a good school because I failed? My brother gave me three 20mg Adderall pills. For a long time I stared at them thinking I was Neo from the Matrix or Alice from Alice in Wonderland, deciding if I should take the red pill or the blue pill; stay in the real world or jump down the rabbit hole into wonderland. And just like that; just like them I took the pill.

edge how bad the side effects were until I lost my best friend. My mood swings were beyond severe. I was a horrible friend, unreliable and mean in a Jekyll and Hyde way that was unreal. When my former best friend literally left me at the mall after a screaming match I started to realize that the drugs might be doing more harm than good and drastically reduced my use. There was a rumor that a girl that used to go to my school ended up in rehab for addiction to Vyvanse and I definitely don’t want to end up in that boat. But it’s hard to forget how Adderall helped me get better grades during finals, or helped me crunch out paper on time. Still I know plenty of students get good grades without it, and I would understand if they felt cheated because I took it; I feel like I cheated myself by taking it because now I’ll never know if I could have made it on my own.

@chanceknowitall It’s the most wonderful time of the year. It’s the time where people come together laugh and have fun, it give great gifts. It’s a time where friends and family enjoy each other’s company and really see how important they are to each other. Besides my birthday, Christmas might just be my favorite holiday. So this month I will not give you any of my great fashion tips, great gift ideas or tell you how to spend Christmas day. Sit back and relax, have fun and enjoy some of these Interesting Facts and learn a little bit about the Holiday Season. 1. Did you know that all the reindeer on Santa’s Sleigh are girls? Male reindeer don’t have antlers on their heads, only females. 2. Each year more than 3 billion Christmas cards are sent in the U.S. alone. 3. All the gifts in the Twelve Days of Christmas would equal 364 gifts. 4. The traditional three colors of Christmas are green, red, and gold. Green has long been a symbol of life and rebirth; red symbolizes the blood of Christ, and gold represents light as well as wealth and royalty. 5. Christmas trees have been sold in the U.S. since 1850. In Germany, Heiligabend, or Christmas Eve, is said to be a magical time when the pure in heart can hear animals talking. 6. The first person to decorate a Christmas tree was reportedly the Protestant reformer Martin Luther (1483-1546). According to legend, he was so moved by the beauty of the stars shining between the branches of a fir tree, he brought home an evergreen tree and decorated it with candles to share the image with his children. 7. Christmas stockings allegedly evolved from three sisters who were too poor to afford a marriage dowry and were, therefore, doomed to a life of prostitution. They were saved, however, when the wealthy Bishop Saint Nicholas of Smyrna (the precursor to Santa Claus) crept down their chimney and generously filled their stockings with gold coins. 8. A Yule log is an enormous log that is typically burned during the Twelve Days of Christmas (December 25-January 6). 9. Santa Claus is based on a real person, St. Nikolas of Myra (also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker, Bishop Saint Nicholas of Smyrna, and Nikolaos of Bari), who lived during the fourth century. 10.According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), there are 2,106 million children under age 18 in the world. If there are on average 2.5 children per household, Santa would have to make 842 million stops on Christmas Eve, traveling 221 million miles. To reach all 842 million stops, Santa would need to travel between houses in 2/10,000 second, which means he would need to accelerate 12.19 million miles (20.5 billion meters) per second on each stop.
