805 Ag Kids hopes for livestock show at fairgrounds 2021 Show and Auction registration opens April 1

05 Ag Kids is hoping the Board of the Ventura County Fairgrounds will allow the nonprofit organization to host the show portion of the 2021 Invitational Youth Livestock Show and Auction in person at the fairgrounds in August.

“If it is safe to do so . . . That’s what we’re hoping,” said Megan Hook, co-founder of 805 Ag Kids and a parent of an auction participant.

805 Ag Kids formed last year to ensure that the 146-year legacy of the youth livestock auction continues. The nonprofit’s mission is to support the next generation of agricultural professionals in Ventura County.

The show portion, slated to take place Aug. 2-6, would involve judges viewing the participants handling their animals and rating the animals on market readiness. Participants receive buckle awards for champion and reserve champion in the various classes. For an online version, the participants would submit videos . . . but Hook noted that an in-person event would be preferable.

Hook said that 805 Ag Kids reached out to the board of the fairgrounds as well as some private ranches and other organizations that might be able to host the show, but the fairgrounds are the preferred location.

“We would like that for the kids,” she said. “They need a sense of normalcy.” She added that talks with the fair board are “ongoing.”

In a March 23 tweet, the Ventura County Fair Board announced that the fair would not take place again his year.

“It was a budget decision discussed and voted upon in November at our regular board meeting,” said Leslie Cornejo, board president, responding via email to the Ventura County

Reporter. “Our budget process did a several month ‘deep dive’ analysis with a state consultant to make sure we are keeping the fairground viable long term. The fair was never calendared for 2021, so I guess you could technically say it wasn’t canceled.”

On the Nov. 24, 2020 agenda, the 2020-21 budget was listed as a “possible action” but the agenda did not call out any action specifically regarding the fair or livestock auction taking place. Fair boards are state agencies under the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and receive fiscal and policy oversight through the Division of Marketing Services within the CDFA. According to Cornejo, “The budget approved in November was the most optimistic of three options presented, even though it still didn’t include the fair, because it estimated some opening up for gatherings towards the end of the year. The board felt it was the most reasonable expectation in a world of unknowns and no guarantees.”

Cornejo said Barbara Quaid, the CEO of the fairgrounds, “confirmed we would not be in a position to run the auction” in 2021, but added that the fair board is preparing for “some full-on strategic planning for next year so that we can properly staff and gear up for a great fair in 2022.”

According to Hook, however, for 2021, 805 Ag Kids can “do all the work. They don’t need to staff it at all.

We will put up the pens. We have an amazing group of volunteers. Families will chip in. We are ready and willing, we just need the OK.” Raising animals for auction is like running a business. There are the up-front costs of the initial purchase, as well as feed, care and veterinary visits.

Small Business Grant Application

The application window for the current round of $5,000 small business grants is March 31-April 6 at 6 p.m.

This round of funding is for businesses that did not receive funding in previous rounds. COVID numbers continue downward

On Friday, March 26, the county reported 82 new COVID cases for the previous day, and on Monday, March 29, 116 new cases were reported for three days in 12,045 tests.

Three people (aged 58, 66 and 70) died over the weekend from COVID-19.

The kids track expenses, and having solid sale prices at the county fair auction ensures they come out ahead. For many, it’s how they earn money for college. The fair’s cancellation two years in a row has made it harder for those that raise livestock to recoup costs.

Hook said that 805 Ag Kids will decide on an in-person or online auction

by May 31, based on whether a facility can host the live event. That deadline is determined by logistics: An in-person show entails various requirements, including travel and accommodations for expert judges, some of whom would come here from out of state.

2021 Virtual auction experience improved

In the wake of the pandemic and the fair’s cancellation, Hook said it was a “scramble” to ensure there was any kind of auction for the kids in 2020.

The fair board organized the online auction for Aug. 15, and 805 Ag Kids did the fundraising, communications and promotion for the event. Normally there are around 600 participants; last year there were just 230, and sale prices were considerably lower. Hook explained that that was to be expected with under eight weeks to prepare.

“It got the job done, but was not as successful as it could have been,” she said. “The prices were disappointing.

It was a very difficult year.”

This year, 805 Ag Kids is taking the lead, and has chosen a slightly different format.

The 2020 platform was meant to mimic an in-person live auction; bidders were required to be at their computers on a certain day, watch the entire event and bid on the particular animal they were interested in. Hook feels this decreased participation.

This year the auction will take place over three full days. Hook explained that this will allow buyers and bidders to log in at a time that is convenient for them and bid. It’s more akin to a silent auction experience.

The auction will also include “add ons” for about two weeks after the auction portion closes. This will allow individuals and businesses to “specifically donate to individual kids,” essentially giving that participant a “bonus to add to whatever their sale price ends up being.”

Kim Leach Livestock Project Scholarship The Toland Group is offering five $1,000 livestock project scholarships available to show/auction participants ages 10-19 who have completed at least one previous year of a fair/livestock animal project and who are entering in the 2021 event. The scholarship is in memory of Kim Leach, the former competitive exhibits manager at the Ventura County Fair, who passed away last year.

The entry period is Aug. 1-30 and applicants must write an essay of at least 600 words in response to, “What I have learned from raising an animal for the fair.”

Free rides to vaccination appointment for seniors

Second dose appointment window

The Ventura County Area Agency on Aging is coordinating free rides to vaccination appointments for seniors in need.

Older adults with disabilities who are homebound or otherwise unable to get transportation to their vaccine appointment can receive door-through-door transportation, which includes lift assist and gurney transportation. The driver will assist the person in getting in the vehicle and into the vaccination site,

Community businesses are sponsoring the award buckles given for the champion animals in the livestock show.

Participants can enter one animal only; the fee is $32.50 per entry. The livestock market show takes place Aug. 2-6, with the auction Aug. 11-13.

Public health officials are emphasizing that the 21 or 28 day “waiting period” window required before a person receives their second Pfizer or Moderna shot, respectively, is the minimum wait time for the second dose. It is not the deadline for the second shot.

The second dose is meant to be given after the 21 or 28 day waiting period, and as people become eligible for their second dose, they will be

notified that they can now make an appointment. Those in Ventura County who have already received their first dose can make their second-dose appointment, when eligible, through the county-run system at www.vcrecovers.org or by calling 805-477-7161.

Options improve for reusing & recycling books

larey Rudd has worked in 15 book stores since his parents started their first one in Oxnard in 1954, and he currently owns Abednego Book Store and Bank of Books in Ventura. He has seen recycling options for books change over the years. “They [recyclers] said glue, [low quality] paper and ink made books unrecyclable,” he remembered.

With that background, he became adept at selling every new and used book entering his inventory, finding ways to sell at a discount books he could not sell at standard prices. Even though books are now accepted in both commercial mixed recycling bins and residential curbside recycling carts throughout Ventura County, Rudd still does everything he can to keep books in circulation rather than resorting to recycling.

He held a massive book giveaway following the Thomas Fire, and he is about to have another as an incentive for people to get their COVID shots. He also offers 50% trade-in credit on used books in exchange for books customers deliver to his store. Rudd also discounts books to one dollar and shares databases with other small book stores, matching books available with customers worldwide who want books.

Although the amount of labor required to ensure a book is reused rather than recycled cannot always be justified by the sale price of the book, “It’s values,” he explained, “Books should be read, not [turned into] products.”

Of course, all books eventually reach a point of no return, and developing ways to recycle books into products has been vital for keeping books out of landfills. Daniel Marks, CEO of Berg Mill Supply Company, explained how companies like his found recycling opportunities for books during a time when Chinese-based recyclers stopped accepting paper from the United States. He established relationships with recyclers in India, who altered corporate strategy to target American low-grade mixed paper, turning the material into pulp. Although India itself does not yet have the infrastructure to use all the pulp, this intermediate step created a product with enough value to be re-exported to paper converters capable of using pulp, but not raw paper.

Ventura County recycling companies, but it also directly collects material and will pay for books delivered in quantities of 20 or more gaylords.

A gaylord is a large cardboard box capable of holding approximately 1,000 books.

One convenient option for local book reuse and recycling has contracted during the pandemic, but is poised to rebuild. In the past year, American Book Drive withdrew its drop boxes from Ventura County and closed its used book store in the Thousand Oaks Mall. Now, the company’s only remaining physical location in Ventura County is the $5 or Less Bookstore in Simi Valley. The company also collects books by request, with a minimum donation of 200 books, CDs or DVDs. Account Manager Veronica Cashman said the company plans to restore its Ventura County presence and would like to hear from property owners willing to host book collection bins on their property. Bins are the size and shape of thrift store donation kiosks, and donors can decide if proceeds should benefit the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Susan Komen Foundation to combat breast cancer, or other charities.

Most libraries, through library support groups, accept donations of books. For example, used book sales by Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library generate approximately $190,000 per year to support programs ranging from literacy promotion to aquarium maintenance, according to Vice President Janet Doman. In normal times, donors use drop off boxes at the library, but during the past year, donation has been appointment-based, arranged through the organization’s website, ftol.org Books free of mold, mildew or water stains may also be donated to thrift stores; sold on sites such as eBay, Craigslist, or OfferUp; or given away through sites such as Freecycle or bookmooch.com.

n March 27, in response to a Feb. 5, 2021 order to the entire U.S. Navy from Hon. Thomas W. Harker, Acting Secretary of the Navy, training was conducted at Naval Base Ventura County designed to “address issues of extremist ideology within the ranks” of the U.S. military.

Stand-down training materials were released by the U.S. Department of Defense on Feb. 26 and the order directed the training to occur no later than April 6, 2021.

The four stated goals of the training are, first, to review the meaning of the oath all service members take when they join any military branch or the Department of Defense as a civilian employee. Second, to review “impermissible behaviors,” and the responsibility to report any prohibited actions; and finally to conduct “listening sessions” that may include providing feedback to the Secretary of Defense about the training and other ways to combat extremism in the military.

The unclassified order stated that the training and materials provided are aimed at “handling dissident and protest activities among members of the armed forces.” (1) The order emphasizes that such conduct is “contrary to good order and discipline and erodes the faith and trust of American citizens and those Sailors, Marines and Civilian personnel affected by it.” The order went on to state that “the Department of the Navy has zero tolerance for extremist conduct.”

The stand-down order clarifies that all commanders “have the authority to employ the full range of administrative and disciplinary actions . . . or appropriate criminal action to sanction Sailors or Marines who actively participated in any supremacist, extremist, or criminal gang organizations.”

The same order clarifies that it is prohibited for “any member of the naval service” to participate in activity with “any organization advocating supremacist causes, advocating illegal discrimination or advocating the use of force of violence against the U.S. Govern-

ment or a state government.”

The training instructions include language that supports the reinforcement of the “core values, Honor, Courage and Commitment,” and allow ample time for “commanders and supervisors to listen to the concerns and experiences and possible solutions . . . to aid in eradicating extremism” from the Navy.

Action identified that would betray the oath taken by members of the military include actions that “advocate illegal discrimination based on race, creed, color, sex (including gender identity or sexual orientation), religion, ethnicity or national origin or those that advance, encourage or advocate the use of force, violence, or criminal activity or otherwise advance efforts to deprive individuals of their civil rights.”

The training is also meant to emphasize that all those serving in any military branch “deserve an environment free of discrimination, hate and harassment.”

Activities identified that would prohibit the oaths taken and other rules of conduct include “fundraising, demonstrating, or rallying, recruiting, training, organizing or leading members, distributing material (including posting on-line), knowingly wearing gang colors or clothing.” Identifying tattoos or body markings associated with “gangs or organizations,” and any actions that further the “objectives of these organizations,” are prohibited and are “incompatible with military service.”

The county is reporting that over 36% of those people eligible now for the vaccine have received at least their first dose.

“We are eager to expand eligibility and have built the capacity to get the vaccines administered quickly but supply continues to be an issue. Several hundred thousand community members will be eligible by mid-April. We hope that 12:39 thePM expansion of the eligibility will match the supply from the state,” said Mike Powers, executive officer of Ventura County.

MyTurn system switchover

All vaccine appointments will now be made through the state-run MyTurn online system overseen

by Blue Shield. The system went live in Ventura County on Saturday, March 27.

Blue Shield and the state of California entered into an “Emergency Contract” dated Feb. 1, 2021 for Blue Shield to be the third party administrator for vaccine distribution, vaccine credentialing and other services related to the vaccine being administered across the state.

Blue Shield is also responsible for overseeing vaccine network providers and ensuring accurate data is being gathered and reported as well as making recommendations to the state for “incentive payments” to be made to providers. The state has

allocated up to $15 million for the contract with Blue Shield.

All county sites for making appointments are now on the MyTurn system. The system requires signing up for both the first and second dose at the same time.

After making an appointment each person will receive a confirmation code via email. The website is https://myturn.ca.gov.

Those with limited or no Internet access can schedule and confirm appointments via phone at the MyTurn phone line: 833-422-4255.

County officials note that anyone who has already made an appointment for their first dose through the current VCRecovers.org website system or via the county’s vaccine assistance phone line (805-4777161) will need to make their second dose appointment using the county’s system and that the county’s phone line “may continue” to help the community in making second dose appointments. The new MyTurn system, however, must be used going forward.

Ormond Beach receives $1M for desperately needed restoration

T

he perpetual northwest winds were up, grooming the exposed fore-dunes of a windswept Ormond Beach in Southern Oxnard. The well-manicured dunes constantly shifted with the winds, buffering a sliver of coastal wetland still hanging on in Southern California.

The wetlands at Ormond Beach are one of the last remaining coastal wetlands in the entire state. Over 90 percent of all coastal wetlands have been lost to coastal development; harbors, homes, roads, and oil refineries replacing some of the richest, most biodiverse habitats in North America.

Looking at an aerial map of Ormond Beach and the surrounding area, saving this postage stamp of a wetland appears hopeless. The beleaguered wetland is smothered by habitat degradation, especially at the end of McWane Boulevard and Perkins Road. A power plant, toxic waste, agricultural run-off, and graffiti far overshadow this remnant of a struggling coastal ecosystem. It appears as if the amount of trash in the channels and mudflats far outnumber the shorebirds, gulls and waders that somehow coexist in this meager ecological quagmire.

Still a Pulse

At first light Ormond Beach resembled a working wetland. Pools on the mudflats reflected the highest peaks of the nearby Santa Monica Mountains. Western sandpipers tiptoed through the mirrored water as a flock of snow geese migrated north overhead. Behind me a wide channel was full of waterfowl: ruddy duck, mallard, northern shoveler and pied grebe. A pair of white-tailed kites harassed a perched red-tailed hawk as a belted kingfisher spouted off with strident, mechanical rattles heard across the swollen channel.

Naturalist and educator Amy Davis has been leading guided nature walks for The Nature Conservancy for the past four years at Ormond Beach, revealing the natural wonders of a coastal wetland. Most of those walks take place at the end of Arnold Road, the more intact region

of the Ormond Beach wetland compared to the badly degraded wetland to the northwest at the end of McWane and Perkins. Most of her participants are adults, but it’s the children participating in those nature walks that are potentially the next wave of naturalists and stewards.

“It seems like no one wants to deal with it,” said Davis regarding the overall state of Ormond Beach. “It’s the ugly stepchild of the area.”

Yet, something here stirs us naturalists. There is a responsibility that comes with stewardship of one of the last remaining wetlands in California. It holds true for an educator such as Davis, who enjoys revealing to future generations that Ormond Beach is still a viable coastal wetland.

“The only way to not go down the rabbit hole of depression is to educate people, or increase awareness,” continued Davis. “These aren’t things we can fix, but maybe these kids can.”

Its fore-dunes and beaches do look as they should and are mostly void of trash, thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers. The fore-dunes and back-dunes are vital habitats for western snowy plovers and California least terns. It’s the mud flats, channels and upland habitats that are in dire need of an environmental facelift.

Some help is on the way, however, for what will be a long road to recovery. Recently, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) awarded more than $27 million to

Despite encroaching development, the wetland remains a vital habitat for shorebirds, including California least terns, which nest (top right) and mate in the dunes.

Taxes or import duties from the program were collected from the sale of recreational fishing equipment, boats, electric motors and motorboat and small engine fuels under the authority of the Dingell-Johnson Sport Fish Restoration Act. The WSFR program provides funding for the long-term conservation of coastal wetland ecosystems by helping states and territories protect, restore and enhance coastal habitats. The billions of dollars generated through recreational angling, boating, waterfowl hunting and birdwatching benefit communities in the vicinity of wetland restoration projects.

“We’re entering a really exciting period”

“Ormond Beach currently is a viable coastal wetland,” said Christopher Kroll, project manager for the SCC’s Ormond Beach Restoration and Public Access Project. “It has been impacted by the development of the area but it continues to have great habitat value for

many plant and animal species. Restoration of degraded habitat areas is a goal of the current planning effort.

Restoration and public access projects of this scale take a significant [amount] of time at the front end — to identify the opportunity, find the funding, study the ecological impacts, talk to the community, and get the permits lined up — but we’re entering a really exciting period now where I’ll expect people will see things moving forward.”

Some of those efforts moving forward include eradicating 11 nonnative, invasive plant species, as well as controlling five others, across the 650-acre project area. Others will be removing 80,000 pounds of trash from wetlands, waterways and beaches; monitoring four times every year water quality and trash source pollution of the three waterways that feed into Ormond Lagoon; installing 5,000 feet of fencing to protect endangered shorebird nesting habitat; and monitoring and managing 150 acres of nesting habitat for coastal-dependent and migratory birds.

The project will also provide training — six sessions annually for volunteer naturalists and/or schools, one session a year for local and state law enforcement — in nesting habitat protection and management. Some of the funds will support the management of 24 community-organized waterway and beach clean-up events annually. Finally, the project will spearhead public outreach efforts for the restoration and public access plans, which will include two public workshops as well as surveys, focus groups and field trips conducted virtually, in multiple languages.

“It is a functioning wetland habitat now but the goal of the planning effort is to restore habitat areas that have been degraded and improve the public access experience while protecting sensitive species,” continued Kroll.

“Despite the industry and industrial waste around it, it has been largely untouched by freeways, residential developments, oil extraction and other urban infrastructure that hem in most of the region’s other wetlands.”

Community outreach is a major goal of the SCC, and Kroll stressed that over the next several years he wants the community of Oxnard to feel a connection with Ormond Beach that it hasn’t had in the past.

“Study after study has shown the physical and mental benefits of access to nature,” explained Kroll. “This project isn’t just important for birds and wildlife; it’s going to be a recreational amenity especially for the people of South Oxnard.”

S

pring is in the air and so is something else.

Could it be excitement, hope, anticipation? While COVID-19 is still very much a reality, there is a sense that we are returning to some kind of normalcy.

That includes the reopening of some arts and culture venues throughout Ventura County.

Since March 2020, when brick and mortar locations shut down due to the pandemic, museums and galleries have found creative ways to engage the public. From posting exhibitions and art classes online to hosting outdoor events, they not only remained relevant; they reminded us how valuable art really is.

Starting in April, many of them will be going back to what they love and do best: opening the doors of their galleries to the public.

It won’t be completely back to normal, of course, but even with mask mandates, capacity limitations, shortened hours, reservations required (in some cases) and other health and safety rules in place, it still feels like something to cheer about. Until life really gets back to normal, it would be wise to do one’s homework by phoning a museum or checking its website for the latest visitor information.

Some venues, like Studio Channel Islands, are offering timed visits that must be reserved online, while some of the more intimate spaces, such as the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts, ask that visitors call ahead to make sure space is available. Both the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts and Studio Channel Islands, as well as the Santa Paula Art Museum, have already reopened to the public.

shrimp teriyaki (for that sweet-salty glaze), General Tso’s chicken (for spice), shrimp tempura (for crunch) and fried dumplings (always a crowd pleaser). 3/30/21 2:24 PM While this was not the lightest meal we’ve ever had, it absolutely delivered on the flavor.

The General Tso’s Chicken was beautifully

General Tso’s chicken. All photos by N. Lackey Shaffer presented, with tender hunks of battered and fried chicken coated in a thick sauce and topped with a sprinkling of sesame seeds. This has never been a dish for calorie counters, but Saku’s version is particularly rich and oily, even by typical General Tso standards. Very tasty (although not too spicy, which was disappointing), but kind of heavy, even with the steamed broccoli and rice. Be warned.

The shrimp tempura was gorgeous: Large prawns in a crispy egg batter, fried to a golden brown. Absolutely perfect and, surprisingly, not even a little soggy after delivery. Same with the fried dumplings, which were filled with a fragrant mix of ground chicken, scallions and ginger. The crunchy texture was indeed satisfying, but I think I prefer the softer, pan-fried version.

The teriyaki was another flavor-packed dish. What seemed like an endless amount of chicken and shrimp was well prepared but practically swimming in glaze. Good, but maybe a bit much. The steamed vegetables on the side were a nice contrast.

After so much fried and sauced food (what was I thinking?), the ramen was a refreshingly light option. Mushrooms, carrots, broccoli, corn, bean sprouts, noodles and tofu with plenty of broth.

Made from slow-cooked vegetables, the broth was savory and earthy but wonderfully delicate. More of this would have been a good idea — and with numerous versions of ramen on the menu, a more balanced meal was absolutely an option.

That’s a good rule of thumb when ordering from Saku: No matter what you select, you’re getting a lot: lots of flavor, lots of oil, lots of ingredients, lots of options. Heavy or light, meat or veg, Chinese, Japanese or Korean, the choice is yours. Embrace it!

I really appreciate the science you laid out showing that men instinctively look at women, even if they really love the woman they’re with. Maybe I should stop feeling a tad bad about looking at beautiful women and enjoying beauty? After all, my wife and I have been married 26 years, and I’ve never even kissed anyone else during that time. Admittedly, I’ve sometimes wanted to, and I’ve had opportunities.

Your eyes probably go many places without your body robotically following suit — like at a buffet when you ogle the chocolate cake and baby doughnuts while dutifully piling a plate with raw broccoli and fat-free dip. Fortunately, broccoli rarely retaliates by sobbing, calling you a pig, and making you sleep in your car for three days.

Evolutionary psychologist David Buss tells a story about a married guy who emailed him after reading his book “The Evolution of Desire,” which lays out scientific evidence supporting evolutionary theories about human mating psychology. Buss gets heat for the book from those whose beliefs it upends — those who cling to the idea that men and women are largely identical in basic sexual psychology — and he admits, “Some of what I discovered about human mating is not nice.”

The man conceded that “maybe some people worry that men’s desire for sexual variety will give men an excuse for cheating.” But, he said, learning about it helped him stay faithful. Buss said the man had previously interpreted his attraction to various women he encountered “as indications that maybe he didn’t love his wife any more. But after reading my book, he

realized, ‘Oh, that’s my evolved desire for sexual variety; it doesn’t mean that I don’t love my wife.’”

The man’s revelation reflects what Buss sees as “two separate evolved systems”: one for love and one for lust. “We become attracted to other people even if we’re in a loving mating relationship and fully in love with our partner.” In other words, no, you shouldn’t feel bad about eyeballing the ladies. Focus on how much you love your wife and how, despite MMO — means, motive, and opportunity — looking has yet to give way to a need, upon arriving home, to sit in your car feverishly working the hand sanitizer in hopes of getting the glitter-flecked spray tanner off your pants.

I’m a woman in my late 20s. The guy I’m seeing is “not a phone person” and hates texting. Our time together is wonderful. However, he rarely texts except to make plans. I am used to frequent contact throughout the day via text with boyfriends. My friends say he should be texting every day, multiple times a day. I’m worried his lack of texts signals a lack of interest.

Technology was supposed to set us free, not dial back our personal autonomy to that of my late hamster. A smartphone makes constant communication possible; “it doesn’t mandate it,” I wrote in “Good Manners for Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck.” Your friends’ daily texting quotas aside, what might it mean that your boyfriend doesn’t spend his entire day texting you? Um...he has a job? He prefers to communicate in spoken-word form, ideally in person?

(See “not a phone person.”) Frankly, maybe he’s on to something, considering that so many text-versations, beyond the constant attention-hijacking, are basically conversational iceberg lettuce, amounting to: “I’m still alive!” “Yep, still alive here, too.

LOL. LOL. LOL.” Chances are your guy shows he cares in a number of ways. Take stock of those. Still feel a little underloved?

Consider “the dependency paradox.”

Social psychologist Brooke Feeney,

who coined the term, finds that in romantic relationships, the more an insecure partner sees they can count on the other to be responsive to their appeals for love and comforting, the less needy and clingy they end up being. (Ultimately, through repeated dependence comes independence.)

You might ask him to be more cuddly-touchy-affectionate with you, which, Feeney finds, helps insecure partners calm down and enjoy their relationship. Assuming he cares about you (as “Our time together is wonderful” suggests), it’s a relationship “task” he should enjoy. And though you’re used to texts from a boyfriend, demanding texts from a man who hates texting is to be avoided. It makes a girlfriend seem less like a girlfriend and more like Mussolini with boobs and a phone seem less like a phone and more like a cattle prod that delivers dings, cat memes, and throw-up-face emojis.
