Ahwatukee Tennis Club holding open house for member recruitment
The Ahwatukee Tennis Club is kicking off a membership recruitment with an open house and member appreciation social 6-8 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Ahwatukee Tennis Courts, 12432 S. 48th St. Tucked away behind green wind screens, the newly renovated courts have served people of all ages for 35 years. Tennis Pro Mike Henneberry, a club coach for 25 of those years, said, “A lot goes on at this cozy tennis club: clinics, leagues, doubles nights, lessons, and most importantly people coming together to play the great sport of tennis. We love tennis and want to share our passion with the community”. His junior tennis program has developed many young players who have gone on to play in high school and college. The member-based Ahwatukee Tennis Club is owned and operated by the Ahwatukee Board of Management and recently has renovated the courts. At the social, people can meet Hennberry, participate in drawings for gift cards and two-month free membership, play round robin and enjoy refreshments. Information: 480-893-3431.
Ahwatukee historian to address Friends and Neighbors group
Ahwatukee Foothills Friends and Neighbors will hold its next luncheon Oct. 28 at the Sivlik Grill at Whirlwind Golf Club, 5692 N. Loop Road, Chandler. Social is at 11:30 and luncheon is at noon. Guest speaker is Marty Gibson and he will present “Historic Tales from Ahwatukee Foothills.” Gibson has written two popular books on the history of Ahwatukee.

Annual free shred-a-thon coming soon, courtesy of local Realtors
Shirley Coomer and Gregory Stainton of Keller Williams Realty Sonoran Living will be holding a free shred-a-thon 9-11 a.m. Oct. 19 at Kyrene Monte Vista Elementary School 15221 S. Ray Road, Ahwatukee. Offered as a community event, this twice-a-year event gives local residents a chance to protect their identity by having important but outdated papers permanently destroyed. The only “cost” is a food donation for the Kyrene Resource Center. Besides healthy snacks for students, people also can donated canned meats, tuna, peanut butter, pasta, pasta sauce, rice, dried beans, top ramen, cereal and mac & cheese.
Ahwatukee home hosting exclusive wine and fall food pairing this month
Phoenician Oasis, which offers cooking classes for all ages with a twist in a private Ahwatukee home, will be holding a fall food and wine pairing event Oct. 27. People also can learn bread making as well as cooking low fat, low sodium, low sugar and vegan dishes in various classes. Church’s GEN YTH student-led ministry will provide a safe space for all students regardless of athletic abilities to showcase their talents and represent their school in a positive way. There will be games, music, competitions and other activities, free Chik-fil-A for the first 150 students to show up and thousands of dollars’ worth of prizes. The event will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Generation Church campus, 11832 S Warner Elliot Loop, Ahwatukee.
Art classes offered at artist Kathie Kelly’s Ahwatukee home
Ahwatukee artist Kathie Kelly says she’s offering “the perfect opportunity for aspiring young artists to learn drawing and painting skills.” Art Lessons for You, 12:30-2 p.m. Saturdays involves “creative exploration classes for first graders and up. AARP Smart Driver course for seniors slated Oct. 17 at Pecos Center
AARP is again offering the Smart Driver Course. The four-hour class provides seniors an opportunity to refresh their driving skills while learning about changes in road design, intersections, signage, and ever evolving technology to our cars. Tips on ageing and driving are also provided to help increase confidence and safety awareness. After
attending the class, participants receive a certificate that may make them eligible for insurance discounts. Classes will be held at the Pecos Senior Center, 17010 S. 48th St., Ahwatukee 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Oct. 17. The cost is $15 for AARP members, $20 for non-members. Time to think about Ahwatukee’s biggest outdoor party next month
The Festival of Lights is gearing up for the next “Kick Off Party” on Nov. 30, the annual festival that starts the million white light display along Chandler Boulevard and also helps raise money to defray the cost of the display and fund grants for selected nonprofits. Planning meetings have begun and occur approximately every two weeks on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at Desert Foothills United Methodist Church, 2156 E. Liberty Lane, Ahwatukee All volunteers are welcome even if they are going to be out of town Thanksgiving weekend since there is plenty of advanced planning to be done. Meeting dates are Oct. 22 and Nov. 5 and 19.
Fall events at Art in the Garden Studio include children’s workshops
Children’s two-hour art workshops will be offered 4-6 p.m. Thursdays and 10 a.m.-noon and Saturdays in October at Art in the Garden Studio, 4221 E. Chandler Blvd., Ahwatukee, for kids 5 and up. A qualified, professional instructor will teach. An adult must accompany children under 12.
