Candy is dandy at Sweeties and much of hit may hit a nostalgic chord with adults who remember their favorite treat but have trouble finding it on most story shelves. Besides American favorites past and present, the company also offers some international sweets. (Kimberly Carrillo/Contributor)

about 185 old-fashioned toys and trinkets. Brands like Bazooka, Cadbury, Clark, Pez, Pop Rocks, Push Pops, Smarties, Taffy Town and Tootsie Roll line the shelves as a nod to the candy that’s been helping create America’s sweetest memories for
generations. Looking ahead to the future of candy, the store also has extravagant displays of things like Harry Potter chocolate wands, emoji lollipops, and full-sized gummy pizzas. But the crown jewel of the establishment, Manzo said, is what he calls the “Jelly Belly Oasis.” With a massive red jelly bean hanging
overhead, the center of the store has a jelly bean bar comprised of over 80 different flavors. The display has the most jelly bean flavors in the entire western region of the United States. “People come from all over the country to see it in person. It’s really great to see the enthusiasm people have about our candy,” Manzo said.
But Manzo said at the end of the day, his eyes are not set on being the biggest, sweetest candy store in the west. His true mission is to spread the joy that candy has given him. “Everybody works hard, at their jobs, at home, in life. Life can be tough. And I think everybody deserves a sweet treat, especially the treats that bring you back to simpler times,” said Manzo.
New Chandler ice cream parlor debuts SANTAN SUN NEWS STAFF
A Tucson couple picked Chandler for the second Valley location of their popular ice cream shop, The Screamery. The Screamery, at 140 N. Arizona Ave., was founded by Linda and Kenny Sarnoski in 2014. They boast their ice cream parlor approaches their treats with “oldfashioned simplicity, using premium milk and cream, all-natural ingredients and for pasteurizing its own sweet cream ice cream base. “No chemicals, corn syrup, synthetic hormones, pesticides or anything unnatural will be found in these ice cream tubs,” the company stated through a spokeswoman. To celebrate their new location in Chandler, The Screamery will offer $1 ice cream cones noon-11 p.m. Oct. 26. The couple also will offer the “Farmhouse Challenge” at this special event. The Farmhouse is their massive, eightscoop, meant-to-be-shared ice cream sundae with lots of different toppings and loaded with warm cookies, brownies and butter cake on the bottom. For the Farmhouse Challenge, couples will be invited to purchase the Farmhouse for the regular price of $24.50 and IF they’re able to finish off the entire sundae in under five minutes, each person will receive a complimentary Screamery t-shirt and have their photo displayed on the Farmhouse Wall of Fame. The Sarnoskis are the first in the state to become certified in pasteurizing their own ice cream base. They also feature two, non-dairy options on the menu – a fruit sorbet and their Fudgesicle flavor that’s made with almond milk, agave nectar and two types of chocolate.

“It all started when Kenny and I decided to begin a new diet and we were both determined to eat only natural, wholesome ingredients, but we discovered that there was absolutely no ice cream on the market that met our new lifestyle criteria,” said Linda. “Kenny knew that ice cream was my favorite dessert and that I wasn’t willing to give it up so he started hand mixing and creating his own flavors in our kitchen,” she added. “Eventually, the unique and original ice cream flavors he created ended up tasting incredible.” There are 24 different flavors on the menu. The three classics – vanilla, chocolate and strawberry – feature a blend of two premium chocolates, all-natural vanilla beans and fresh strawberries. Linda said their most popular flavor is the “Sweet Cream Honeycomb” made with their sweet cream base and mixed with honeycomb pieces made from local raw honey out of Marana. The Screamery is open Sunday through Thursday, noon to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, noon to 11 p.m. Information: thescreamery.com
