eople wanting to remember those fallen in war will have an opportunity to commemorate their lives at traditional Dawn and Civic Services but also, for the first time, at the end of Anzac Day this Monday. A small ensemble from Howick Brass, which will provide music for the Howick Returned and Services Association (RSA) Dawn and Civic Services, will perform

a short sunset/retreat ceremony at the end of the day. It will play down the Anzac standards from the Flagstaff on Stockade Hill. The ‘playing down’ of the standards signifies the end of the day’s battle as the sun sets on 100 years of Anzac commemorations since the first Anzac day. All members of the public are welcome to attend the informal event which starts at about 5.35 pm for a 5.42pm sunset. For the second year running

both Howick’s Anzac ceremonies will kick off with a blank round fired from a 105 Howitzer Gun RSA past president, Mike Cole is also optimistic that a P-3 Orion Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) surveillance aircraft may be able to make a dawn fly over at Stockade Hill. As they did last year War Birds vintage aircraft are expected, although not confirmed, to fly past at 11.15-11.30 am during the Civic Service.

As dawn is about to break Returned and Services Association (RSA) members will assemble for the Howick Dawn Parade at 5.40am in Mellons Bay Road. They will march to the cenotaph on Stockade Hill where the service will start just after the 6am minute gun fire. This year the Dawn service will be led by Pastor Maurice Ritchie, of the Citipointe Church, Pakuranga. ➤ Turn to Page 3

Biting dog breeds difficult to identify By MARIANNE KELLY There’s a lot of anecdotal information but a paucity of facts about the specific breed of dogs which are at the centre of high-profile attacks on people, especially children. Anecdotal information suggests that many people treated for dog bites have been attacked by labradors, Alsations, even handbag dogs! Howick’s Diane Andrew says the fact that she has a

‘staffy’ (Staffordshire Bull Terrier) that has killed flies and crickets and never hurt anyone is a reason she would like to see the other side of the story. “I’m sick of people judging my little staffy without even meeting her.” Auckland Council’s Animal Management doesn’t collate figures on breeds it handles after biting incidents, its manager Geoff Keber says. “While all dogs can bite,

pitbull terriors and cross breeds are disproportionately responsible for attacks when you consider the size of this breed’s population,” he says. Dr Sally Langley, president of the New Zealand Association of Plastic Surgeons (NZAPS) says it’s difficult to get statistics on the breeds or crosses of offending dogs. “The breed of dog might not be known,” she says. “There is an element of

Chinese whispers and carried mistakes. A lot of people do not know what type of dog they have to identify as the offending animal. I got hit by a dog recently and I think it was a rottweiler, but cannot be sure. “We do feel that the more major injuries are caused by the more aggressive dogs which tend to be pit bull/ bull mastiff/crosses, possibly rottweilers.”
