No charges laid over home invasion by armed group

olice have been unable to solve a home invasion carried out by an armed group at an east Auckland property eight months ago.

As the Times reported at the time, Binh Hoang set up an online fundraising page to help him recover from what he described as a “violent home invasion” at his Flat Bush property on January 2.

He said he was trying to recover from the “traumatic” incident which left him struggling to recover while jobless. His online appeal, started on January 3, raised $1,690 from 48 donors.

“My life was turned upside down by a terrifying home invasion,” Hoang said. “Armed intruders broke into our house, threatened us with guns, and stole our passports, phones, car keys, and cash.

They also destroyed our doors while we tried to protect ourselves.”

His online appeal said he had been left with no

savings. He was struggling to make ends meet while jobless and faced urgent costs including flights and accommodation to replace passports, new car keys, and other damage not covered by insurance.

“I am seeking help to cover these essential expenses and rebuild our sense of safety.

“Currently, I am just trying to recover from the sudden lost [loss]. Every contribution, no matter the size, will help recover from this traumatic event and regain stability.

“Thank you for your kindness and support during this challenging time.”

Hoang said one member of the group was carrying what looked like a rifle.

The home invaders broke through his bedroom door and demanded money from him, he said.

They’re alleged to have stolen cash, paperwork, jewellery, a bank card and passports.

He later posted an update on his online fundraiser showing what he said was a photo of him travelling to Wellington on February 19 to get a new passport.

“Thank you everyone for the support,” he said. “I was able to fly to Wellington and pay for the fees of the passport application.

Again, thank you so much for the support.”

A police spokesperson initially said an investigation was under way into an aggravated robbery at a Flat Bush property.

“At around 9.45pm on January 2, four offenders gained entry to the property and demanded property from the occupants.

“It has been reported that one of these offenders was in possession with what is believed to be a firearm.

“Following this, the

offenders have taken property and left the address in a vehicle.

“Police are still working to establish the circumstances surrounding what has taken place at the address.”

People with information were asked to contact police. The Times recently asked police for an update on the case.

In a statement, Counties Manukau East Police area investigations manager, detective senior sergeant Dean Batey, says police have completed enquiries into an aggravated robbery at a Flat Bush home in January.

“No charges have been laid as a result despite extensive enquiries being carried out. Police followed several lines of enquiry which did not eventuate, including speaking to one person of interest.

“Unfortunately, there was insufficient evidence to prosecute.

“While the matter was filed in late July, police remain open to looking into new lines of enquiry should these come to light.”

Howick kindy fundraises for Plunket BestStart early education centres across New Zealand have raised $91,000 to support Whānau Āwhina Plunket, thanks to their 2025 BestStart Butterfly Appeal.

And BestStart Howick raised $2,043, the highest of all centres nationwide.

The money helps Plunket deliver free community services for families, including home visits, new parent groups and parenting programmes.

“This is the 10th year BestStart have supported us with this amazing appeal and they generated a record-breaking total this year,” Whānau Āwhina Plunket chief executive Fiona Kingsford says.

“We’re so grateful for their efforts. All sorts of fun activities for tamariki go

Over the past decade, BestStart centres around the country have raised $483,000 to support

Whānau Āwhina Plunket’s community services, Kingsford says.

“Our butterfly logo symbolises growth, care and transformation – values shared by both organisations.”

Each BestStart Howick team member cooked a dish from a different culture, and they held a Friday takeaway night for local families.

“We are so happy to be this year’s top fundraiser, as it so aptly matches with our philosophy of ‘Bringing communities together from the heart’,” centre manager Philomena Lobo says.

“This time it was bring-

ing communities together through delicious food.”

Whānau Āwhina Plunket is New Zealand’s largest health and well-being support service for children, seeing 290,000 under-fives in 2024.

About three-quarters of newborns are enrolled with Whānau Āwhina Plunket each year.

Its nurses provide clinical assessments, and along with Kaiāwhina and Community Karitāne, support families through home and clinic visits, as well as PlunketLine (0800 933 922), a free 24/7 telephone advice service for parents.

Its website, www.plunket.org.nz, is one of the country’s most widely read digital child health resources, with 1.8 million visits each year.

DITORIAL: It’s time to cast your ballot! To play your part in the democratic process as a responsible citizen, if you’re eligible and 18 years and older.

Voting in the triennial Auckland Council elections has opened, with voting forms for the three-week postal election sent out this week. Polls close at midday on Saturday, October 11 – Election Day. Filled in voting papers can be mailed back using the provided envelope or placed in ballot boxes at public and council buildings such as libraries and service centres.

It’s often heard that many people are uninterested in local government issues, and that’s reflected in the usual 30-40 per cent voter turnout in local elections over the past 25 years.

But local government policies and rules impact residents more in their daily lives than central government subjects – roads, rates, rubbish and recycling, town planning, water supply, wastewater disposal, public transport, parks and recreation – making the election of people who are deciding on these issues important.

We’ve heard recently from people in the street that they don’t know there are council elections on, and they don’t know who is running. In any democracy, the onus is on the voter to do their research on the respective candidates, and there is plenty of information out there, including with candidate contact details, and especially in this modern-era Information Age with the internet.

The chance to vote in the Auckland Council local elections only comes around every three years, so please seriously consider casting a ballot.

Candidate aiming to ‘Make Auckland Young Again’

I

immigrated from Taiwan to New Zealand in 1989 at the age of 25, and I’ve now lived in east Auckland for 36 years.

Over the years, I’ve been deeply involved in the cultural and entertainment industries, managing an art gallery, organising Asian concerts and major events, and continually contributing to the community.

I also ran a photolab in Somerville for 20 years, providing photography and printing services to the local community.

In 2018, I was elected as an Auckland Councillor through a by-election in Howick ward, and in 2019, I was re-elected, becoming the Auckland Super-City’s first Asian councillor.

In the most recent election, I narrowly missed re-election, and I’m now running again to continue serving the community and build on past achievements.

My motivation to run again is to help immigrants integrate into the community, give back to society, and serve residents while

I’m now focused on mentoring the next generation of local leaders to serve the people of east Auckland.

How have you supported the Howick Ward’s diverse communities?

Peter YOUNG: BFEA has hosted more than 100 events to promote HEALTHY and HAPPY community and culture: health seminars, Tai Chi, Zumba, Yoga, and multicultural festivals.

Kai ZENG: As secretary and project manager, I’ve improved BFEA’s youth reach and organisational structure, introducing K-Pop music, Chinese language lessons, and more workshops (and potentially E-Sports). I’ve also run tutoring, conservation volunteering, and increasing awareness of local resources.

Have you a track record in improving infrastructure?

We have strongly advocated for the Flat Bush Library at Ormiston Town Centre that will open early next year. We’ve also advocated for local community hubs, footpath upgrades, and community clean-ups

to address flooding, erosion, and illegal dumping.

What about youth and education?

Kai ZENG: I have led mentoring programmes, career workshops, and supported cultural events that empower young people across Flat Bush. I will advocate for a Youth Space in the Ormiston Library, built by youth, for youth.

Have you helped with the environment?

Yes – from restoring waterways to supporting native bush conservation, hosting green education workshops, and holding Auckland Council accountable on clean-ups and pollution.

And we will scale up these efforts with local communities and organisations once elected.

ellons Bay resident William Goldberg is standing as an ACT Local candidate for the Howick Local Board in its Howick subdivision at this year’s local elections.

Goldberg has lived in the area for many years with his partner and children, who attend Bucklands Beach Intermediate School and Macleans College.

A business owner and IT professional, he is also chief growth officer at Octovox, helping New Zealand companies harness the power of AI to cut costs and boost productivity, an approach he hopes to bring

Goldberg says his decision to run came from

frustration at rising rates, wasteful spending, and a lack of focus on essentials.

“When Auckland Council’s rates survey came out, it felt like we had no real choice, just which rate increase we wanted to accept,” he says.

“There was no plan to cut red tape or eliminate waste.”

While local boards can’t set rates, Goldberg says they can be a strong voice for residents.

He wants to use his AI and business background to push for smarter spending, better transport decisions, and local policies that are practical and trans-

Collings opposes intensification My name is Luke Collings and I’m standing for the Howick Local Board in the Howick subdivision.

Howick has always been my home, and I love this place. It’s given me so much and the people always treated me well. I am committed to serving it with loyalty and respect.

Firstly, I have grave concerns about the recent Plan Change 78 which proposes potential housing intensification, which must not come at the expense of liveability, character, or the aesthetics that make Howick special.

There’s been an increase of apartment blocks being developed in many of our leafy suburbs, and PC78 would open Howick to even denser development.

The community spoke

Luke Collings up quite clearly at a recent meeting and I intend to advocate for Howick to ensure that what we have is not destroyed or lost forever.

Transport is under strain. At peak times, driving into, out of, and around Howick is a real challenge.

The trip to Panmure train

station is slow, buses are not yet always reliable.

Privately-owned cars remain a vital part of our transport system and must be treated as such!

Ensuring everything from light phasing to clear road markings are upkept.

I appreciate our local MP, who deserves recognition for pushing through the long-overdue Reeves Road Flyover while he was Minister of Transport.

My father, who is on the board, has quite literally spoken to me about this project for well over a decade. It’s fantastic to finally see it come to fruition! It will be a gamechanger for local traffic, reducing congestion.

Immigration a privilege, not right New Zealand’s immigration system must be fair, trusted, and above all, it must work for New Zealanders.

Most migrants do the right thing and make an honest contribution to our society.

But when people lie, cheat, or commit serious crimes, New Zealand must be able to act swiftly and decisively.

That’s why I welcome the Government’s recently announced changes to immigration law.

They strengthen the system by ensuring New Zealand has the right tools to deal with serious breaches.

The announced Bill strengthens deportation rules so residence-class visa holders who commit serious criminal offences

Parmjeet Parmar can be deported for up to 20 years after arrival.

Providing false or misleading information will also become grounds for deportation, and historic crimes committed before someone even set foot in New Zealand will be recognised.

Deportation notices will be able to be served electronically, and immigration officers will have stronger

ID-checking powers when breaches are suspected.

These are common-sense changes that close loopholes and strengthen enforcement.

Crucially, the Bill also cracks down on migrant exploitation.

Too often, at-risk migrants are taken advantage of by those who exploit workers. Under this law, penalties will increase from seven to 10 years’ imprisonment.

Exploiting vulnerable people will not be tolerated. ACT backs the many migrants who follow the rules and help build our economy and communities.

But we must also hold accountable those who take advantage of New Zealanders or each other.

If immigration is to retain public confidence, there must be consequences for people who break the law or abuse the system.

At the same time, ACT believes there’s room to go further. We have long argued that people seeking citizenship or permanent residency should sign up to basic values, such as respect for free speech and equal rights for all New Zealanders, regardless of sex or race.

Immigrating to New Zealand is a privilege, not an entitlement. New Zealand should continue to welcome those who want to contribute honestly.

But for those who don’t, the message is clear: exploitation, dishonesty, and serious crime have no place here.

Restoring democracy to transport Last week, I joined Transport Minister Chris Bishop and Auckland mayor Wayne Brown to confirm the most significant reforms to transport in Auckland since 2010. These reforms will restore democratic accountability and ensure Aucklanders can hold their elected representatives responsible for transport policies.

Responsibility for most transport functions in Auckland will shift from Auckland Transport (AT) to Auckland Council, including all policy and planning work.

As part of this change, Auckland Council will become the road controlling authority in Auckland and deliver transport capital projects while maintaining transport infrastructure.

A new Auckland Regional Transport Committee will be established that comprises an equal share of Auckland Council elected members and Ministerial appointees, alongside an independent chair.

The committee will put together a 30-year trans-

port plan for Auckland, to steer investment and shape the future of transport in our largest city.

These changes will also give new powers to local boards, allowing them to make decisions on local and collector roads, including setting speed limits, closing roads for community events, and managing parking.

For too long, AT has failed to listen to Aucklanders and take their views into account. That’s why we’re changing the law.

Council spends around $1.5 billion of ratepayer’s money to keep AT running each year, and around a third of their 10-year budget is committed to transport capital investment.

Until now though, council haven’t had the right to properly determine how

that money is spent with AT acting independently, leaving transport decision-makers unaccountable to locals.

By putting decisions back in the hands of elected representatives, we’re restoring democratic legitimacy and ensuring Aucklanders can have a direct say in the transport policies that shape their city.

The Bill to legislate for these reforms will have its first reading in Parliament this month and is expected to pass into law in March 2026.

There will then be a sixmonth transition period, before final arrangements are in place by September 2026.

These reforms are fantastic news for Auckland, helping to restore confidence in AT while delivering better outcomes for Aucklanders.

From Croatia to Howick – church welcomes priest

everend Ivica Gregurec’s journey to his new role as the vicar at All Saints Anglican Church in Howick began in his native Croatia in southeastern Europe.

He was born and raised in its capital city Zagreb, worked in the Solomon Islands for seven years, spent time in Australia, and the first New Zealand city he arrived in was Dunedin in Otago.

“I’ve been the Cathedral Precentor at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell for almost nine years,” Reverend Gregurec told the Times.

Reverend Ivica Gregurec “When I saw the parish of Howick was looking for a new vicar, the parish profile I saw was challenging and exciting for me, and that was how I responded to that invitation.

“We say it is a calling, and you have a calling to

apply for a job in a parish.

I felt quite strong that for this season of my ministry, Howick seems a good place where I can offer my ministry and my pastoral work.”

His new role won’t be different from that of any other parish priest or vicar.

“It means taking pastoral care and of the spiritual needs of the parishioners in a certain territory, which is called a parish.

“In Howick, one thing I was excited about was they were looking for a vicar who’ll look to connect the church with the community.

“Working at the cathedral for so many years

helped me to obtain certain skills in how to do that. It’s not just in the church, but primarily my role is to take care of the parishioners and journey with them.

“We’re partners and companions on the same journey. The church is one of the groups that has to look outside itself. It’s not there to serve only those who are members, but also those who are not.”

His induction service will be presided over by the Right Reverend Ross Bay, Bishop of Auckland, at 7.30pm on Thursday, September 18, at All Saints Anglican Church, 17 Selwyn Road, Howick, and all are welcome.

What’s this Howick Village Market for?

“This market is for our community to come and buy locally-crafted and -produced goods in an open market environment. It has live music for entertainment and a sit-and-stay habitat, which is great for all our customers, or even just people who want to chill on a Saturday morning.”

Around how many stallholders are there and is it the same stalls every week?

“There are 55 to 60 stallholders each week. We have a mixture of different stalls each week.

“We have some of our stallholders who are here every single week.

“To keep the market fresh and vibrant, we have new stallholders’ requests coming in all the time, some monthly and some on a casual basis.”

What’s the busiest time?

“From 10am. That’s when people start to come in and browse, particularly as they’re buying things like fresh produce. A lot of our fresh produce gets sold out by 10.30am.

“At 12.30pm some stores are still busy selling, and

PIA GROVER they have a mixture of regular customers that come in every week and buy exactly the same products.”

Do you have a team and how do you operate?

“The Howick Village Association is a team of three and we’re all part-timers. The village manager is Katie Treneman and the events manager is Jane Newbury, who puts on things like the Village Hop.” What’s the biggest challenge for you when running the Howick Village Market?

“The limitation we have on the size and space in the market. Making sure the flow works and working with the stall owners and making sure they’re happy with the placement of their stalls. Another big challenge is when we either get weather-dependant cancellations or have to re-do and change things around based on a cancellation.”

Rachel took me and my mum on a walk around the market. We met several wonderful business owners. It was incredible to see each stallholder selling unique and diverse hand-crafted merchandise at exceptional prices, and to hear a couple of stallholders’ incredibly bizarre backstories from Rachel. I’ll share those soon.

Phone cases in big demand

A

melia McKenzie was slowly commuting across Auckland to athletics training in July 2023 when deciding to create a now thriving business selling cases for smart phones.

“Starting a business was something I wanted to try, and while I was stuck sitting in traffic I decided to just jump in,” says the Pakūranga College year 12 student.

What followed was the launch of Vanilla Lane Cases and this year’s National Award for Digital Impact from GirlBoss, an organisation founded to celebrate female leaders in New Zealand and inspire the next generation.

Amelia decided phone cases were a viable product

option to start with. Once a website and manufacturing supply were established, she says she could fit fulfilling orders around her busy school and athletics schedules.

Business seed money came in the form of a loan from her parents, and after creating 30 initial case designs, her website went live.

“I didn’t expect too much to start with,” she says. “I wanted to sell through my stock and pay back my parents’ loan. Pretty soon after launching, a TikTok I posted went viral and suddenly I had orders coming from all over the world.

“Now 70 per cent of my orders come from the United States, which is not something I anticipated,

but I’m definitely leaning into it. I’ve expanded my range of case designs to 40 and have just launched a new collection called The Fifth Lane, which is New York City-inspired.”

Amelia says she’s also giving back with another collection of phone cases titled Case For Cause.

Artwork for the five-case capsule was chosen from submissions by New Zealand artists and students.

The top entries were then turned into cases, with all profits donated to Youthline New Zealand.

While the business was designed to fit around Amelia’s lifestyle, she admits she has “no time”.

“I’m spending about 30 hours a week on the business, 12 hours on athletics,

plus school. It’s a lot, but the time I’ve invested is definitely paying off.”

Amelia doesn’t intend to slow down any time soon, with plans to continue Vanilla Lane Cases while she studies for a university business degree in the future.

Business students develop healthy herbal coffee

Its latest group of students to shine in the Young Enterprise Scheme, which gives young Kiwis the experience of starting and running a business, has the name Herbal Expresso.

It’s comprised of chief executive Shanaiya Lata, marketing director Polina Gontcharova, finance director Shreya Harakh, and Simon Nguyen.

“Our product began with the idea of a large level

of energy drink consumption among high school and university students to keep them engaged,” Shanaiya says.

“When conducting research, we established that coffee has the same or similar purpose of an energy boost. From this, we played around with the idea until we realised whilst many herbal teas are on the market, there aren’t many options for herbal coffees.

“This led to us creating our herbal coffee blends, crafted to benefit consumers’ health whilst providing

Healthy eating for winter wellness Even though winter is coming to an end, flu season isn’t over yet.

This raises the question: can the foods we eat help us stay healthy in winter?

From nutrients and fun food ideas, Sarah Kennedy has some tips on eating healthy for winter wellness.

She’s an associate registered nutritionist and part of the Wellness Team at Howick’s local Crawford Medical as a health coach.

Kennedy says many people think supplements are the go-tos for staying healthy, but try getting all the nutrition from foods before going for supplements.

In winter, our body burns more energy to maintain temperature.

This increases our appetite,

Some people will become deficient in vitamin D during winter. We can get small quantities of it in foods such as fatty fish and eggs. There are also products fortified with vitamin D such as margarine.

A key nutrient is vitamin C, an antioxidant, meaning it promotes production of white blood cells, which are your body’s natural immune response.

Examples include broccoli, dark green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, and capsicum.

Probiotics are also really important for immune health as they’re food for your gut – 70 per cent of your immune system is in your gut. Things that are rich in probiotics include yogurt, sour dough bread, sauerkraut, and miso.

Fibre is also essential.

This includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.

Antioxidant-rich foods are amazing. Aim for 30 plant-based foods weekly, not just fruits and veggies, but also whole grains, herbs and spices, and legumes.

Young people need more energy to maintain muscles and bones. This can come from complex carbohydrates and whole grains such as oats, starchy vegetables, and whole

grain breads.

Iron and calcium-rich foods are also important, such as meats, dairy products, almonds, and darkgreen leaf vegetables.

Older adults need more protein. Paired with exercise, this can help them maintain muscle mass.

Dairy, meats, and eggs are great choices.

Kennedy says picky eaters often don’t like food because of the texture. It can take 15-20 tries for them to get used to it.

You can mix the foods into smoothies, soups, or sauces.

Doing things a little differently and being a little more creative can make eating healthy for winter wellness a simple joy.

Bike hub pedals to milestone

A

n Auckland charity that started its first Bike Hub in a humble container eight years ago has clocked up 100,000 visitors across the nine hubs it now operates.

It’s largely thanks to Aucklanders showing up week after week to buy or donate second hand bicycles, or to learn how to maintain the bikes they already have, says EcoMatters Environment Trust’s bike manager Brent Bielby.

Supporters in east Auckland “can be proud” of the numbers going through the Pakuranga Bike Hub – one of the most recent additions, he says.

In the 2024-2025 financial year, EcoMatters’ nine hubs saw more than 35,000 visitors, fixed 12,267 bikes

ments have also been made possible with the backing of a wide range of funders who saw the potential in EcoMatters’ original concept, plus the commitment and passion of staff and volunteers.

“We’re blown away by the support we’ve had

from Tāmaki Makaurau, which truly shows Aucklanders want access to this type of community service.

“It’s all about making it easy for people to get on a bike.”

EcoMatters chief executive Carla Gee says reaching this overall milestone shows the demand is there, not just for individuals but for whole families.

“I’m particularly proud this is a space for the whole whānau to enjoy.

“Making cycling accessible and affordable for more people of all ages is good for our community and our health.

“It’s also good for the health of the environment, which is the basis on which EcoMatters operates.”

Consistency delivers sustainable success

By CHARLES MILLER Auckland FC recently signed Sam Cosgrove, League One ‘up and comer’ from Barnsley FC. Sam’s proven track record as a striker, his dedication to hard work, and his adaptability will support the club’s ethos of resilience, togetherness, and mutual accountability.

His arrival is a statement about the future of the club. In their first campaign, the Black Knights became the fastest A-League side to score 50 goals, and the first New Zealand team to lift A-League Men’s silverware, all in their debut year. Their guiding principle was simple: does it build credibility and momentum? That clarity, coupled with a rocksolid culture and strong community buy-in, made them a force of nature.

Auckland FC’s achievements remind me of another unlikely triumph: Leicester City’s Premier League title in 2016. Written off as relegation candidates, they rose on the back of another simple leadership mantra – will it help us defend well, break quickly, and play for each other?

In practice it meant adherence to a counter-attacking structure, selecting players who fitted roles and culture, managing for minimal injuries, and resisting the temptation to make knee-jerk changes.

Closer to home, Sir Peter Blake remains the quintessential Kiwi example of this. He led Team New Zealand to a 5-0 victory in the America’s Cup

in 1995. His leadership distilled to a single guiding rule: will it make the boat go faster?

He protected his people from distraction, insisted on team-first behaviour, and built a groundswell of national support. Designers, sailors, and support staff worked as one. What unites these stories is not a theory but a common philosophy.

Each leader and team simplified their challenge to a single guiding concept understood and followed by all. Each recruited and developed people to fit the culture and put the team above self. Each stuck to the plan when noise and distraction threatened the goal.

For businesses and leaders seeking sustainable, people-focused transformation along with commercial success, these lessons are relevant and practical. The first step is to settle on one inspirational concept that will drive success.

The second step is to recruit for fit and culture rather than individual brilliance, building people whose character and skills strengthen the system. The third step is consistency.

The fourth step is to use symbols and rituals – small, visible acts, shared celebrations, cultural markers, and common language, this develops belonging and ownership of the goal.

Sustainable success isn’t built on charisma or short-term reactivity. It comes from clear principles, consistency, and the work of bringing people together.

OFFICIAL CASH RATE DROPS AGAIN Secured

On August 20 the Reserve Bank of New Zealand cut the official cash rate (OCR) to 3 per cent.

This fits with predictions in November, 2024, that each OCR review throughout 2025 would have the rate cut. July’s pause on OCR movement was the only change to this steady downward trajectory.

The recent reduction could have been more as the RBNZ wrestled with the best decision keeping in mind expected levels of inflation, unemployment and the general mood of the economy.

July, 2025, sales were up 6 per cent on July, 2024, and 25 per cent on July, 2023.

Conversely there are reports of vendors taking their homes off the market amid unrealistic price expectations.

Perhaps lower mortgage rates have not translated into first-home buyers entering the market as everyone had hoped, which could be linked to the cost-of-living challenges.

It seems consumers are forgoing luxuries to keep a block of butter in the fridge.

The cost of groceries rose 4.8 per cent, dairy 9.9 per cent, fruit and meat 5.6 per cent, each in the year to June, 2025.

Fashion student among best

A

talented east Auckland fashion student has wowed the judges at the recent Resene Colour of Fashion competition.

Among the finalists is 19-year-old Flat Bush local Keisha Duong Kheav, who studies at Whitecliffe College’s Manukau campus.

Described as the biggest day of the students’ academic year, judging day delivers the energy, challenge and reward of the industry the students will graduate into at the end of the

year.

Twenty-two Whitecliffe students studying for the Diploma in Fashion from three campuses presented their designs to the judges.

Each garment was meticulously crafted from silk twill dyed in new Resene fashion colours.

Thirteen finalists were then selected, with seven from Wellington campus and six from two Auckland campuses.

For her design Keisha found inspiration in the phrase: “When life gives you lemons make lemonade.”

“This project means so much to me because I see it helping me pave the way through the fashion industry,” she says.

“The great opportunity of being able to partake in something so big and sentimental really inspires me to further my study in fashion.”

built in 12 years, giving hundreds of graduating students a head-start in the industry.

Since its inception, Resene Colour of Fashion with Whitecliffe has supported students in their final year of a two-year Diploma in Fashion.

The students were asked to reflect on the world around them, the changing colours of their lives, their experiences, choices, challenges and the people who helped guide them towards fulfilment.

The design brief states: “This theme highlights the changing colours and the ebb and flow of life, focusing on the power of learning, resilience, and transformation, much like nature’s rich and ever-changing tapestry.”

Nerves, lights, cameras, professional models and a judging panel were all part of the experience. The students will all show their designs at the Whitecliffe Graduate Showcase in November and will feature in a Resene online gallery.

The winner of this year’s Resene Colour of Fashion project will receive a cash prize of $1000 gifted

by Resene.

“Our curriculum, supported by Resene Colour of Fashion, prepares students for success in the contemporary fashion industry, in New Zealand and overseas.”

PRINCIPAL IN PERSON With Alan McIntyre, Owairoa Primary School How long have you been an educator, and where did you train?

Since training at Hamilton Teachers College, School of Education at Waikato University, I’ve dedicated more than five decades to education. During that time, I’ve had the privilege of being in various teaching and principal roles, and for the past 35 years I’ve proudly led Owairoa Primary School. Over the decades, I’ve taught countless students, mentored teachers and led major school initiatives. For me, education has never been a job, it’s a lifelong vocation that gives me the opportunity to make a positive difference in people’s lives every day. Looking back now, it’s amazing to think how many classrooms, staffrooms and assemblies I’ve stood in and how many young people I’ve had the privilege of seeing grow and thrive.

When did you become principal of Owairoa Primary?

I was appointed as Principal of Owairoa Primary School in 1990. I’ve proudly served this community for

Alan McIntyre 35 years. During my tenure, I’ve seen the school transform in scale and character, from a small local school of 200 students, into one of the most sought-after and respected primary schools in Auckland. Our roll has grown to around 850 students, supported by 74 dedicated staff members and our facilities have expanded to keep pace with that growth. A recent milestone was the opening of our 18-classroom block, which the board of trustees named The Alan McIntyre Centre in my honour. That recognition was incredibly humbling and stands as a reminder of the students and families I’ve been for-

tunate to serve so far and the generations of children and families that building will serve in years to come.

The school has developed into a leading educational institution with a positive reputation both nationally and internationally. Watching the growth of Owairoa Primary School into such a trusted name in primary education has been one of the most rewarding achievements of my career.

What’s the best thing about being an educator and principal?

For me, the greatest joy of being both an educator and a principal lies in the students, teachers and families. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a child light up with excitement when they feel seen, safe and inspired to learn. At Owairoa Primary School, I make it a personal mission to ensure every child knows they are valued, whether that’s through a birthday card for each student, a personal visit to a family in need, or even dropping by with a light-hearted ‘Dr McIntyre Medical Room prescrip-

tion’ of chocolates when a student is recovering from an injury. These gestures may seem small, but they build trust, connection and belonging. Beyond the students, it’s about empowering staff, engaging families and building a school community that truly feels like a family. A big part of my personal philosophy is to challenge the status quo and having the courage to think differently, embrace innovation and seek the best outcomes. Great leadership is about respecting the traditions of the past while constantly looking ahead to create innovative ways that inspire young minds for the future. I keep a quote by Gertrude Stein on my computer that says: “Silent gratitude isn’t much use to anyone.” Gratitude is something I practice daily. I believe in recognising the good around us, expressing appreciation and making the effort to thank people. It’s the small acts of acknowledgement that build a culture of respect and kindness.

Study support for senior school leavers The Howick RSA Community Welfare Trust is delighted to once again offer its annual tertiary grant programme.

Senior students in their final year of college are welcome to submit an application to be considered for a cash grant of $5000 (over two years) to assist them with the costs of tertiary study commencing next year.

“This year we are thrilled to have widened our programme to four scholarships with one or more to be made available to applicants seeking

a career specific course or trades apprenticeship,” Trust chairperson Madeleine East says.

Join Santa Parade movie fundraiser People in east Auckland are encouraged to support the beloved annual community event that brings 40,000 smiles to Howick each year.

In its 72nd year, the iconic Howick Santa Parade is calling on the local community for urgent support through a special fundraising movie event after other planned fundraising activities had to be cancelled due to low support.

The annual parade draws over 40,000 people to Howick each December, making it east Auckland’s largest and most anticipated community celebration. But behind the magic, it takes months of planning, a dedicated volunteer team, and crucial financial backing to bring it to life.

“We’ve had to cancel several fundraising events this year due to limited response, which has put pressure on our ability to deliver the same high-quality parade our community loves,” parade committee spokesperson Candice Baker says.

“We’re hoping this movie fundraiser will help close the gap and allow us to keep the magic alive for the families who look forward to this every year.”

Howick Santa Parade characters will make an appearance at a movie screening on September 20.

The PG-rated movie will be screened at 11am and 3pm on Saturday, September 20.

Guests will enjoy a fun-filled day out, complete with popcorn, refreshments, and special appearances from Santa Parade characters. All proceeds go towards funding this year’s parade.

The streets are filled with floats, dancers, car displays,

festive music, and joy for all ages, but it can’t happen without the help of fundraising and community involvement.

“This parade belongs to the people of Howick,” Baker says. “It’s a celebration of everything we love about our local community. Every ticket sold helps ensure that this cherished tradition continues.”

Community members who can’t attend the movie are encouraged to show support in other ways, by volunteering, sponsoring, or donating directly via the website.

RUTH Q&A WHITE BUSINESS EAST TAMAKI GENERAL MANAGER She’s the friendly face and enthusiastic leader of an important organisation advocating for and supporting east Auckland companies, firmly putting East Tamaki on the Auckland regional map as a “powerhouse” of the industrial and manufacturing sectors.

Where were you born and grew up?

I’m the youngest of a family of seven kids, born and bred in Lower Hutt and have great memories of growing up there. That was way back in a day when you didn’t think twice about leaving the key in the front door.

You were brought up in a very musical household. Can you tell us about that?

My grandfather, Harold Temple White, was a leading figure in Wellington’s music scene for over 50 years as city organist, conductor, composer and music teacher. Both my parents were music teachers, and my mother later became a Trinity College London examiner, travelling the world through her work. Growing up in this environment, music was part of our household’s daily life. I went on to study both the piano and violin, though the piano became my focus and gaining my F.T.C.L. (Fellowship of Trinity College London) remains one of my proudest achievements.

Your mother’s grand piano resides in east Auckland. Where is it and how did it get there?

“I enjoy working alongside business owners, many of whom have built their businesses from the ground up, often starting in their garages.”

It goes without saying that there were multiple pianos in our household and I was lucky to inherit my mother’s grand.

However, two pianos are hard to fit into a small house – especially a grand – so when Uxbridge Arts and Culture in Howick put out a call for anyone willing to loan a decent piano, I offered my mother’s. The beauty of this is she would love to know it’s being well

What did you do when starting your working career?

I followed in my parents’ footsteps and pursued piano and school music teaching for a period before deciding to spread my wings and head overseas for a change of scene.

You’ve lived in London and Melbourne respectively for extended periods. What did you do there and how were those experiences?

I started out teaching in London secondary schools doing daily supply work – an experience that I was happy to leave behind. When an opportunity came to transition into education recruitment I jumped at it, recruiting New Zealand and Australian teachers to teach in London. That was a great job and a lot of fun, but all good things must come to an end, and I made the decision to return to the Antipodes, as they like to refer to it in the United Kingdom. Somehow, my trip home detoured via Melbourne, and I ended up living there for 13 years working in general management type roles in two other associations: the Tax Institute and the Australian Institute of Architects. I loved living in Melbourne but ultimately

the pull of family and New Zealand was too great, and I headed back just a month or so before the country went into lockdown in 2020.

How long have you been with Business East Tamaki and what is your role?

I’ve been at BusET since the end of 2020 in a general management role. It’s a really interesting role that allow me to work with some incredible businesses, and I’ve enjoyed the shift from a corporate membership environment, working alongside business owners, many of whom have built their businesses from the ground up, often starting in their garages.

What is it that Business East Tamaki does?

Business East Tamaki is a business association representing the 3300 businesses and 2100 property owners within the East Tamaki Business Improvement District (BID). In short, our job is to make it easier for businesses to do business. That could be anything from advocating on key issues facing businesses, driving crime prevention initiatives to safeguard our business community, facilitating access to key decision makers, promoting visibility through events and publications or

creating initiatives like our recent Future Connect event to link students with local businesses and highlight career paths.

How do Business East Tamaki’s initiatives impact the success or growth of businesses in East Tamaki?

Last year we launched the East Auckland Business Awards to celebrate local businesses – a big success that’s now becoming a biannual event. These awards shine a spotlight on east Auckland businesses, helping them gain recognition whilst strengthening our region’s reputation as a powerhouse in the industrial and manufacturing sectors. We look forward to again showcasing the businesses that make our corner of Auckland special.

Where are some of your favourite places in east Auckland and why?

I do love a good café, and there are some goodies right here in East Tamaki, but the one closest to our office is Hello Stranger on Smales Road – a definite favourite with our team.

If there’s one thing you’d like to see change in New Zealand society, what is it?

That everyone should have a home.

DECADE OF SERVICE

The Z Club of Macleans College has for 10 years championed causes intended to improve the fortunes of females in east Auckland.

Z Clubs are formed at secondary schools as junior sections of Zonta International, the worldwide women’s service organisation.

Macleans College and Howick College both have very strong Z Clubs and are associated to the Zonta Club of East Auckland.

More than 60 members of Macleans College Z Club recently hosted an anniversary event marking a decade since it was chartered in 2015. Attending the special occasion was national governor of Zonta New Zealand Jen McKinlay-Birkin, the Auckland area director, Zontians from across Auckland, members of the Macleans College board of trustees, and the executive of Howick College Z Club.

In her speech, McKinlay-Birkin explained the importance of Zontians listening to Z Club members. “What I’ve learnt from Z Club members is that you look after older Zontians. You teach us about what the world is like now, what you are living with. We learn from you about what you’re dealing with so we can keep our thinking current,” said McKinlay-Birkin.

“We learn how to help you cope with what you’re dealing with and look forward into the future and think about the legacy that we will leave for you. Your contribution is not only within the school and Zonta, today and over the years you have belonged. It goes well beyond that. Always remember the power of doing things for others, of servant leadership. You will never know where it may lead you.”

Barbara Astill, president of Zonta East Auckland, extended her thanks to the Macleans College Z Club executive for their commitment and energy and the “wonderful service” to others over the past 10 years.

Kelly Ma expressed the appreciation of the Z Club for the opportunities members have been given within Macleans College to organise events allowing them to fund-raise for causes they choose to improve the lives of women and girls in the east Auckland community.

The Z Club executive was proud to present a cheque for $1000 to McKinlay-Birkin for the Zonta Club NZ district project Foster Hope.

GREAT BARRIER ISLAND BIRDLIFE, BEACHES AND MORE Fancy a holiday that’s more about relaxing and connecting than shopping and rushing about? Then Aotea Great Barrier Island will do the trick. A recent six-day sojourn refilled the batteries and reminded us of the unspoiled beauty of New Zealand’s sixth-largest island.

Staying at Glenfern Sanctuary on Port Fitzroy was a real find. Set on the water’s edge, Glenfern covers 83 hectares within the 240-hectare, predator-fenced Kotuku Peninsula on the north-west coast of the island. A regional park run by a charitable trust, Glenfern is free for all to visit, but to fully appreciate its beauty, an overnight stay at either historic Fitzroy House or Glenfern Cottage is a must.

Our days were spent hiking the many tracks around the island, especially those near Port Fitzroy. Each was incredibly scenic and different, from groves of nikau palms to towering kauri

and puriri, a haven for kererū. Starting from our cottage, the 2km Glenfern Loop Track was the first on the list. It winds beside a clear Aotea stream and through regenerating native bush, with a side track leading to Sunset Rock, where sweeping vistas take in Hauturu (Little Barrier), the Hen and Chickens, and the mainland. Alive with kākā, pāteke, black petrel, and even the rare chevron skink, the track offers a serene and wildlife-rich walk through conservation-restored forest.

You can reach Great Barrier by a scenic 30-minute flight from Auckland or the North Shore, or by the 4.5-hour car ferry from Auckland CBD. A car is essential for exploring the island, as there’s no public transport. There are plenty of hire options, or you can bring your own vehicle on the ferry. The east coast rewards the drive with some of the island’s amazing beaches – wide, wild, and often almost empty.

Fishing and kayaking off the sanctuary’s private jetty added to the fun – and the menu. Snapper, kahawai, and porae found their way into the cottage’s fully equipped kitchen, itself a slice of history, barged into Glenfern from the Whangaparapara sawmill in 1914.

Our trip ended on a real high. Cruising back to Auckland from Port Fitzroy in perfect weather, we were treated to glassy seas, stunning views of rocky islets guarding the harbour, and sightings of dolphins and whales, the perfect finale.

EXPLORING SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF LAS VEGAS During the recent school holidays, my family and I flew across the globe for an unforgettable trip to Las Vegas, Disneyland, Los Angeles and a cruise around Mexico! Each destination was full of surprise features, all so special in their own way, so it’s hard to pick favourites.

My parents planned and saved for this trip for over five years, and with the expert help from local Katrina Cole and her team at House of Travel Botany, everything went smoothly … well, nearly all smoothly.

“What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.”

That’s what my family and I were told by many locals of the chaotic city of Las Vegas. Though this rule often applied, but I am going to break this rule one time to spill the beans on day one. After 24 hours of travel and being incredibly tired, we got to our hotel in Vegas and when asked for my mum’s passport to check in, it was MISSING, NO passport.

To cut a long story short, over an hour of panic, calling House of Travel agents, and the New Zealand Consulate, we’d found it. It had dropped out of my dad’s bag “accidently” at the airport and had been handed in. Anyway, apart from this terrifying mishap on day one, I’m about to share with you some of the coolest parts of our trip in Vegas!

Lots of things about Vegas surprised me.

Firstly, the extreme heat from when we

CHARLIE PETERSON stepped off our plane. It was 35 degrees at 9pm, and during daytime it reached 43 degrees!

Another thing that gave us a taste of how different New Zealand and Vegas really are was when we walked out of our plane and we saw rows of slot machines welcoming us! Many people were gambling while they waited for their planes, also there were DOGS at the airport. Dogs are allowed to travel in the US – I’d love that for New Zealand.

We stayed at the MGM Grand for four nights, located at the south end of the Strip. Once we got over the missing passport saga, we went for a stroll down the Strip, marvelling at new sights, the bustling environment, beautiful fountain shows, musicians and crazy people from all walks of life.

we were shocked to find out all hotels we visited, including our own, had a shopping mall! The coolest one was at the Venetian Resort, because inside it portrayed the Grand Canal in Venice – it looked so real!

Along with the Venetian, many places were impersonated around Vegas. One hotel called New York New York, featured miniature versions of the city buildings, including the Empire State Building, and a smaller replica of the Statue of Liberty.

Circling the hotel was a huge rollercoaster that I went on with my family.

There were various places around the world displayed in Vegas, such as the Eiffel Tower from Paris, the Pyramids and Pharaohs from Egypt, the Colosseum from Rome and more!

During the day we rode the world’s largest operating observation wheel, The High Roller. From the top you could see things like the Sphere, the STRAT, and a breathtaking panoramic view of the mountains surrounding Vegas.

My rating of Vegas as a 14-year-old was 10/10. I could have stayed an extra few days to see more sites and lap up the Vegas ways, but we had a tight schedule and more to see. Stay tuned for more stories on my US trip. Next stop, Los Angeles and Mexico.

Tucked away only a 10-minute, 600m walk from Clevedon township is an 80-minute walk well worth exploring.

Plenty of shade, lots of birdlife and song and some beautiful old kauri, rimu and totara. Adjacent to the carpark is fitness equipment and a large, grassed play area and toilets.

The superbly maintained 3km loop track leads you to 360-degree views of the Hunua Ranges and the Hauraki Gulf. Just under 1000 stairs (yes, we counted!) to the top. From the walkway is a short extension to a pretty waterfall. You may meet runners circling two or often three loops. For the more adventurous the walk extends 2.3km from the lookout along Kimptons Track to Kimptons Road.

Experienced trampers can find their way along a number of tracks right through to Maraetai.

Dragon boaters provide exciting marine spectacle There was an unmistakable buzz of excitement when the first-ever dragon boat racing event was staged on the East Tamaki Estuary.

The recent event was organised by Ricky Long, chair of East Tamaki Dragon Boat Club, along with Howick Local Board members Peter Young and Bruce Kendall, and took off from Highbrook Fishing Wharf.

A huge turnout of families and friends was present to cheer on the participants as they got ready to partake in the colourful cultural sporting event.

While the sun was shining bright, the strong winds delayed the start of the ceremonial dragon boat race.

But with the able guid-

ance of Kendall, a double Olympic boardsailing medallist, it was smooth paddling. He even charted a new pathway for the race, just 30 minutes before it kicked off.

The idea of staging a dragon boat race in east Auckland was the culmination of a conversation between Kendall and Young.

The sailing enthusiast mentioned to Young that there’s no dragon boat available in east Auckland.

“Most of the time we end up having rice dumplings at the local events but there’s no dragon boat available for a competition in the area,” he says.

After two years of planning, he contacted the Baiyun Lion Association Incorporated and the New Zealand Chinese Dragon Boat Association Incorporated for this special event.

The team had a drummer, who sat on the bow of the boat, adding a special connection as the team

moved to the rhythm of the drums.

The participants said it was a great day of learning in terms of balance, team spirit and connection to the water, as they all moved expertly in the confined space they shared with fellow paddlers.

As for the spectators, they had a fun morning, happily cheering on their favourite team.

Howick College netball team wins tournament

etball teams from across Auckland recently converged at the Auckland Netball Centre for the annual Combined Points Netball Tournament.

The fiercely contested event drew secondary schools from across the region, with teams competing in the Year 9, Year 10 and Premier grades for the prestigious Combined Points Trophy.

Howick College once showcased the depth and quality of its netball programme, with all three of its teams, in the Premier, Year 10A, and Year 9A grades, dominating their sections to advance to the crossover rounds.

The Premier and Year 9A teams won their crossover games to advance to the finals, while the Year 10A team fell just short in a tightly fought match against Avondale College.

In the finals, Howick College’s Premier team was narrowly defeated by Saint Kentigern College by two points. However, the Year 9A team won their final

The combined points total for all three teams resulted in Howick College winning the Combined Points Netball Trophy, further cementing the school’s reputation as a powerhouse in Auckland netball.

Power lifts four weight medals

n east Auckland strongman withstood the pressure of lifting heavy weights and foreign competitors to win four medals at the recent Asian, African, and Pacific Powerlifting Championships.

Max Louw, 19, placed first overall against older rivals in the under-23 age-group at the event in Himeji, Japan, staged by the Asian Powerlifting Federation.

His prize haul included three gold medals in the overall, squat, and deadlift categories, and a silver medal in the bench press.

“My squat was 265kg, bench press 150kg, and deadlift 292.5kg, with the total of the three 707.5kg,” says Louw, a former Howick College student of Maraetai.

“I was over the moon with how the day went.

I was more pleased with how I performed as opposed to the fact I won.

“After squats I had established a comfortable lead. For the rest of the competition, I focused on

seeing how far I could push my total.

“Although I hit a bigger deadlift in training, I knew that coming into this competition there would be a ton of variables out of my control: heat, travel, lack of diet control, and as it turns out sickness, to name a few.

“To come out adding 7.5kgs to my best combined total, after competing at the national champs just a month before, I was ecstatic.”

Louw says he was extremely focussed heading into the Asian contest.

“Preparing physically for this competition required training hard four times a week, eating whatever protein-dense thing was in my field of view, and abstaining from alcohol – easier said than done as a student at the University of Otago.

“The training in the build-up is the most enjoyable part, so I had a lot of fun. Typically, I train four times a week, bench pressing every day, while squatting and deadlifting twice a week.

“As my psychologist parents would tell you, the mental game is every much as important as the physical game.

“I try having as much fun while competing as possible and this helps ease my nerves.

“At the end of the day, I was doing what I’m most passionate about while overseas in an awesome new country.

“I see a lot of my peers place such high expectations on themselves, then when one small thing goes

wrong, they catastrophise.

“I find that when you stop trying so hard to have the perfect day, you end up performing better.”

Louw says he felt in top form heading into the Asian champs but was taking nothing for granted.

“I was confident, however, by no means expecting a guaranteed win. It’s one thing being strong in your own gym. It’s another being able to put it all together on the same day, especially in another country.”

Hand-built Ford hot rod ready for public display

O

ne of the pristine vehicles set to feature in a spectacular hot rod show in east Auckland was built entirely by hand over seven years.

The mint condition blue 1934 Ford is owned by Bucklands Beach builder Keith Hunter, the president of the Southside Streeters car club.

His club is staging the 2025 Dempsey Wood Hot Rods in Howick event at the Howick Leisure Centre from September 20-21 as a fundraiser for Multiple Sclerosis Auckland.

The public show will feature an impressive selection of about 30 of New Zealand’s finest hot rods and muscle cars and will provide entertainment for the whole family.

Hunter says his Ford was built from scratch by himself and an old friend who’s since passed away.

It’s powered by a 351 cubic inch engine that’s been stroked out, or enlarged, to 427 cubic inches, and

produces about 550 horsepower.

“We started it together and it was quite a journey,” Hunter says.

“It was completely hand-built from the ground up. We started with a pair of chassis rails and everything else is hand-made from there.

“All the chassis, the brakes, the wheels, everything you can think of. The bracketry is all hand-made.

Everything is a one-off. It’s been in three or four hot rod shows.

“It’s been in the Kumeu Classic Car and Hot Rod Festival. It won the Mother’s Shine Award and Best Ford, in its debut. The guys in the Southside Streeters club are very passionate about what they do and how they do it. There’s some exceptionally talented people within the hot-rodding industry.”

Hunter says his Ford is more of a show car than one to tackle a quarter-mile on a drag strip.

“As the guy who built it, you’re very careful about

“It’s got 550 horsepower in a car that weighs 1000kg.

If you’re not sure about what you’re doing it could scare the crap out of you.”

He says Southside Streeters encourage people to get along to the hot rod show in Howick as it’ll have something for everyone.

“The big thing is trying to have a point of difference to other hot rod shows. We have some special things organised, but I don’t want to give too much away.

“There’ll be a lot of spe-

cific, themed lighting and we put a huge amount of effort into that. A couple of exceptionally well-known cars are coming. One is still on its way from America. There are no barriers [around the cars].

“There’s going to be food trucks and coffee. Outside there’ll be a mountain of other hot rod-type vehicles and muscle cars, and there’s plenty of parking.”

Accounts Payable Officer

We are seeking a permanent Accounts Payable Officer for 3 days/21 hrs per week, Tuesday–Thursday, term time only, to work with our Finance Team in our rapidly growing college.

The position requires: • Good knowledge of Xero • Skills in processing invoices • Processing weekly and monthly payments • Updating of Fixed Assets • Other finance matters We are looking for a person who has at least two years’ experience in Accounts Payable and Xero, is a team player and is able to work in a busy school environment. The ability to problem solve, be able to multi-task, and have previous school experience, would be an advantage. Job starts 20 Jan 2026.
