t was a celebration of art, creativity, culture and diversity.

The incessant rain didn’t stop the opening of the Cherry Blossom Art Salon Festival held in conjunction with the two-day Cherry Blossom Festival at the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple in Flat Bush at the weekend.

An entertaining lion dance followed by the sheer beauty and virtuosity of technique by harp player Lana Solar set the mood for the opening of the art exhibition.

The event was attended by special guests including Howick Local Board members Adele White and Peter Young, Counties Manukau East Police area commander Inspector Wendy Spiller, strategic advisor for Human Rights Commission Inspector Rakesh Naidu and Howick Ward Councillor Sharon Stewart.

The Cherry Blossom Art Festival, which runs until December 9, has works of more than 90 artists exhibited at the Fo Gaung Yuan Art Salon.

Curated by Venerable Abbess Manshin, there are more than 300 exquisite works of art that include wooden and copper sculptures, glass artworks, jewellery, ink paintings, oil paintings on canvas that each tell a story through different mediums.

The idea behind the festival is to encourage people to share their learning through art, to connect and come together in harmony to create a better society. The popular tea meditation ceremony as well as the Blessing of the Baby ceremony had a lot of young families with their babies in tow waiting to be blessed by the Venerable Abbess.

Kids’ TRYathlon The South Auckland Kids’ TRYathlon will see hundreds of local children swim, cycle and run their way to the finish line as part of the upcoming Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon. Students from Maraetai Beach School, Beachlands School, Howick intermediate, Our lady Star of the Sea School, Botany Downs primary and Elim Christian College (Junior) will be among those gathered at Mountfort Park on Wednesday December 5 eagerly awaiting the start of the TRYathlon. Each student will be awarded a medal from special sporting star guests.

“Making people feel special and valued is what customer service is all about,” she smiles.

Gayatri has been living in Pakuranga since 2009. She has spent most of her career in the supermarket managing customer service. She has two kids – Zeal (4 years) and Het (2 years). Despite

Healing prisoners through yoga

uliet Slogrove has always believed in the healing power of yoga.

Now the Bucklands Beach local is taking that healing power to the Auckland Women’s Prison.

Juliet took on the challenge four months ago when she signed up to teach yoga in the Mums and Babies Unit at the prison, and says it is the most challenging and rewarding experience.

“Our space is cold and noisy and, at times, the babies are noisy too.

As you can imagine, my pupils face unique challenges. Their situation is very stressful and most of them carry heavy burdens,” she says.

“Every class is different, I never know what to expect.

“It is wonderful to bring the healing power of yoga to them, to help them cope with their day-to-day issues but also, hopefully, to foster the development of coping skills that they can use in the future, outside prison.”

Juliet, who has been practicing yoga for 40 years, is supported by the Yoga Education in Prisons Trust (YEPT), a charitable trust that takes yoga and meditation classes to prisons across the country.

YEPT provides its teachers with financial assistance and education in trauma-sensitive yoga as well as provides mats for prisoners and offers them opportunities for further yoga education through correspondence courses.

She says that the programme is not about reforming prisoners, but rather giving them the tools to self-reflect, manage stress, anger and everyday life-challenges and live a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

“We want them to have the skills to be able to go out into the world and transform their own lives.”

Because YEPT relies solely on the funding from private donations, Juliet will be holding her own fundraiser on Sunday December 2.

She is inviting the community to join her at a fun, all-abilities yoga

Countdown to the magnificent Howick Santa Parade

There’s just 10 sleeps until Howick Santa Parade and organisers Bo and Pip Burns are putting the final frantic touches to the very full programme.

Bo promises this parade – marking the 65th anniversary of Howick Santa festivities in the village – will be jam-packed with fun events, activities and floats on Sunday, December 9.

Pre-parade entertainment is from 11am-2pm up and down Picton Street with four face painters, two clowns, stilt walkers.

The main stage features fashion parades, dance troupes, a magic show and a surprise act at midday.

The parade begins at 2.30pm with 60 floats this year.

Uxbridge Road has four local sports clubs representing local cricket, soccer, netball and rugby operating a Give-it-a-Go section.

“All the local banks have kindly

donated prizes on the day for the clubs to give out as spot prizes,” said Bo. “This will be from top of Uxbridge to where the car park starts. Access is still available to that car park and Super Liquor.”

Moore Street will be closed with free toy pony rides, massages for parents, real fruit ice cream, candy floss, a hot rod show and a “few more things”. ( Howick Village Business Association market manager and deputy chair) Jenny Foster is helping us to run Santa Parade Markets which is fabulous in the normal market spot which will only add some more ambience to the village,” said Bo. “We have around 50 tickets left for the VIP Santa After Party at the RSA. I had been led to believe that I had a fairly major problem. Not the case.

Dave dropped what he was doing and worked on the door for over half an hour – then said no charge.

The problem seems to have been caused by blatant vandalism.

Thank goodness that with expert skill and knowledge by a friendly obliging professional tradesman, the problem was sorted.

2018 Midnight Madness

By JANINE HICKMORE This year Midnight Madness had a record crowd, due to the local advertising and out of area promotion.

The village had a variety of entertainment throughout the evening - new performers plus the old favourites entertained the young and old Popular as ever with all ages was the traditional Christmas lights, toys and the snow cave at Fencible Drive, put up by Howick Lions—a place where kids, adults and all cultures shared and celebrated the joy of Christmas.

Santa popped in for a few hours, meeting and greeting his fans. If you missed him, he will be back on December 15-24 from 7pm-10pm.

The highlight was the rich tradition of switching on of the colourful lights of the Christmas tree on Stockade Hill where hundreds had gathered to see it light up. The hill came alive with live music and dance performance by Red Studio that kept the audience amply entertained.

The beautifully-decorated Christmas trees from the schools, kindergartens and local groups were a nice touch, and will be on show until Christmas Eve bringing colour and festive cheer to Picton Street.

The retailers had a great evening also, and they tell me the customers were in a real festive mood.

Congratulations’ Howick Business Association, Howick Local Board and all those involved on a fantastic Midnight Madness 2018.

he Labour-led Government’s election bribe of fees-free tertiary education has been a complete failure with the Government’s own numbers showing that the number of students in tertiary education and training continues to fall.

Last week the Government released figures that show there are 2400 fewer students in tertiary education and training than a year ago, despite the Government’s Fees-Free policy costing taxpayers $2.8 billion.

This expensive policy was designed to attract more students into tertiary education and it has completely failed.

Universities have had only 10 more students enrol, Wananga have decreased by 1188 and Private Training Establishments have decreased by 674.

More concerning is the fact that there are 4740 fewer people undergoing Industry Training at

Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga a time when we’re desperately short of skilled workers.

As National’s Associate Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment spokesperson, it is concerning to see so much taxpayer money going towards a policy which is having the opposite effect of what it was designed to do.

The Government should have never over-promised and should be spending this money in education areas where it is really needed. The question the Government now has to answer is whether they will be going ahead and making the second and third years free as they have

promised? Whilst the policy will help reduce overall student debt when they leave tertiary education, the fact of the matter is that those who have a university qualification will earn on average $1 million more over their lifetime than those who don’t.

This means they are receiving a massive personal benefit, while those working hard in low-paying jobs and paying taxes will be further subsidising their education.

Already, 80 per cent of tertiary education fees are subsidised by the Government and a generous interest-free policy is in place.

The Government should admit that this flagship policy is a failure and that it isn’t increasing participation in tertiary education, and instead redirect the billions of dollars to where it’s actually needed.

related disorder incidents, all involving youth. Each time, police were able to move the group on without incident, he says. Two young people were taken home by police but

overall police were pleased with the behaviour at the event.

Let’s meet the rest of the team: Riffy Since joining as Clinical Manager in September to oversee the hospital, resthome and special care units, Riffat Jahan-Khan has loved getting to know both residents and staff.

“It has got such a nice vibe about the village,” says Riffy, who has a Bachelor of Nursing from Auckland University.

“Everybody smiles and says hello and I think that speaks volumes about a place.”

Building good relationships with residents, their families and of course her staff are what Riffy thinks are most crucial for successful care.

“Communication is the absolute key and if we’ve said something is going to happen with a person’s care, following up and making sure it has happened and keeping their loved ones in the loop is absolutely vital.”

Faye With ve years working in aged care and the last three as Resthome Coordinator with Ryman, Faye Pinpin has realised she has a natural affinity for older people.

“I love that you can learn a lot from the residents, hearing about their interesting lives and their different upbringings.

“This is a really special part of their lives and meeting their families and witnessing their close relationships is a wonderful part of this role.”

Michelle Working towards a Masters degree in Health Management following 20 years at Middlemore Hospital as an acute care nurse, Hospital Coordinator Michelle Lowe came to Ryman in July hoping to ‘give something back’.

“I wanted to give myself a new direction in nursing – I could employ some of my management skills whilst still working on the coal face and education is something I feel strongly about so it’s ticking all those boxes.”

She loves the way Ryman takes a holistic approach to care.

“All the activities and the Triple A exercises Ryman organises, it’s not just about day to day caring but keeping people engaged and vibrant and having meaningful relationships still within the community.

“I have been really impressed with that.”

Kathlen As the newest member of the team, Kathlen Gingoyon joined this month as Special Care Unit Coordinator.

She has a range of nursing experience in the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand, but has found her calling in aged care, which she describes as a ‘breath of fresh air’.

“In the Philippines we don’t have resthome or retirement care like there is here, we look after our older people at home.

“So for me, aged care is like a breath of fresh air. It’s like looking after our grandmothers or grandads and it feels like being at home.”

Artika Enrolled nurse Artika Naidu joined Bruce McLaren last month as Serviced Apartment Coordinator and so far has been blown away by the supportive team and what she describes an ‘amazing’ facility.

Having been raised from the age of ve by her grandmother, it feels completely natural for Artika Naidu to use her nursing experience to help older people.

“It’s very good here, very professional and the village looks beautiful and all the residents receive the best care which is what they deserve. I absolutely enjoy it.”

Riana Recently moving from a receptionist role to Assistant to the Manager, Riana van Niekerk is really the glue that keeps the whole team together and says she couldn’t imagine working anywhere else.

“I love working here, they will have to drag me away,” laughs Riana, who moved from South Africa to New Zealand in 2014.

“I love the friendliness of the residents and I enjoy helping to care for them.

“It takes away a little bit of the sadness of leaving my parents by giving something back to these people and my goal every day is to get to know each of them a little better.”

he didn’t want any fuss to be made over her turning 100.

Joyce Heighway had warned her family and staff at the Somerset by the Park Retirement Village that she didn’t want any big celebration for her milestone birthday on November 21.

Yet on Wednesday morning, activities assistant Joanne Clark from Somerset By the Park Retirement Village held a surprise morning tea for Joyce and invited family and friends to mark the special day. You don’t turn 100 every day, she said.

On the pretext of taking Joyce for a stroll after a visit to the hairdressers, the 100-yearold birthday girl was surreptitiously led down the corridor to a place where Joyce’s family was quietly waiting for her on level one.

Her daughters Margaret Peters and Helen Preston looked visibly worried about their mother’s reaction to the surprise morning tea. They weren’t sure how she’d take it.

The centenarian is clearly the matriarch of the family and rules the roost. As one of her family members put it, “She is as sharp as a dart.”

Till recently she was a member of the Auckland Trotting Club and would go regularly to

the races with one of her friends.

However Joyce’s daughters needn’t have panicked. After the initial surprise, the feisty greatgrandmother was delighted on seeing her close family and friends on the grand occasion.

There was also a special bouquet of flowers from Rotarian George Wilson who had made it a point to be there.

“Joyce is a very special person.

Both her husband and she were Rotarians and were always there to help the Rotary Club of Papakura,” he said.

“Joyce used to do the amazing bake sales and help us with the fundraising. I couldn’t have pos-

sibly missed her 100th birthday.”

Once she cut her birthday cake, Joyce proudly declared to the Times, “Luckily I have all my faculties intact.

“My dad use to be a milkman and he died in his sixties because he used to get wet in the rain delivering milk. But my mum and my sisters all lived well over 85.

“My husband and I used to run a dairy and everyone said that I worked very hard. But I don’t think so. I just kept long hours and was on my feet. And that is what kept me fit,” she said revealing the secret behind her longevity.

Humane pest control

Many people know how rats, stoats, possums and hedgehogs were never meant to be in New Zealand. They were all brought over by ships from England in the 1880s. These pests are harming our native birds, other native animals and our beautiful environment.

New Zealand has a goal to be completely stoat, rat and possum free by 2050, something that no other country has succeeded to do.

Year 8 Students at Bucklands Beach Intermediate School are largely focusing their final term on an environment focused exhibition. Three Year 8 girls, Nell, Eve and Anna are focusing on the impacts and effects introduced pests have on our environment. They say we need to be dealing with them in a humane way. Spreading awareness about cruel traps such as glue boxes is important, as well as using quick, effective way to kill pests.

There are about 30 million possums in NZ, an alarming rate when current population estimates suggest that between 3000 and 7000 individuals are left of Keas and there are fewer than 100,000 Kiwis— when there was once around 12 million.

Time and tide best observed by us High tides at eastern beach 6000 years ago were a good 300 metres further inland than they are today.

If you stand in the car park at the southern end you can see where the original shore line was and this is further confirmed on the council’s informative billboard in the same area.

If you check out the large historical photo on the back of the adjacent toilet block taken around 1940, the high tide mark is clearly two metres further inland which points to the fact that the seas in the Hauraki Gulf are receding, continuing the 20,000 year cycle that had forests stretching all the way to Great Barrier Island - not all that long ago which may well repeat itself in another 14,000 years time.

Computer modelling, because of its weakness in being able to predict sudden and chaotic weather patterns, is no match for observations by coastal dwellers who live and breathe tidal movements on a daily basis over a period of time.

Some of the billions spent on expensive computers might be better spent on setting up a

network with some of these old coastal dwellers.

There have been two letters in newspapers in recent times by two old timers who have stated that in the past 40 years, there has been no change in high tide levels and I can add to that as I was water skiing at eastern beach in 1949 and sea levels were certainly the same.

If my memory serves me correctly when launching the boat, (sea levels) might have even been higher than today.

How pleasing to see Sancta Maria College publicly congratulating there senior achievers of 2018 (Times, November 22).

I have been to two senior school prizegiving’s recently and it is the Duxes of the school that receive the loudest and longest applause.

This indicates that their peers do not feel humiliated or ready to have a nervous breakdown because they weren’t acknowledged but rather that they acknowledge the effort that the winners have made and wish them every success in the future.

“We have a fantastic team of doctors and nurses that speak a range of languages from Russian to Middle Eastern, German, French, Mandarin and Korean,” she says.

“We envisage in the near future we will be able to have more nurse lead clinics including our recently introduced paediatric clinic which has been a great success.

Looking back at the journey of Pakuranga Medical Centre which has come a long way, she says, “Ten years ago we merged three medical centres to combine our strengths and were very excited

he vibrant energy and deep passion for theatre comes across as the talented actors in the musical West-End and Broadway kept the audience thoroughly engaged on Friday evening at the Harlequin Musical Theatre.

The opening of the show with a medley from popular musicals set the tone for an evening that showcased raw talent that beautifully

came together to connect with the audience.

The show is packed with energy and makes you want to dance along with the cast.

Director Aaron Tindell along with musical director Emma Bishop has well managed to weave in as many iconic composers of musical theatre that have performed on West End and Broadway.

Songs like Mad about the boy, Losing my mind, Der Guten Tag Hop Clop and When I grow up, deserve a special mention, as does 13-year-old Melody Lui-Webster who exudes confidence on stage.

What is equally impressive is that none of the cast gets paid for three months of hard work put in before each show.

The next musical to watch out for is The Sound of Music, scheduled from March 30 - April 13.

Lucky students win ride to school

By Therese Henkin One lucky Riverina School student got the school carpool of a lifetime last Tuesday morning.

Tristan MacCauley, 6, was the winner of this year’s Every Day Heroes ‘Win a Ride to School’ competition and was chosen out of more than 300 entries for a ride to school in a police car.

The object of the competition was to teach kids and their parents to remove all items that could be stolen from the inside of a vehicle.

In order to win, Tristan had to identify items left visible in a car that made it a target for theft and identify ways to minimise the risk of theft.

Tristan chose his brother Jayden, 10, and best friend Braxtyn, 6, to accompany him on his ride in a police car.

Bright and early in the morning the three boys loaded their school bags into the police vehicle and were driven to school by Constable Nick Cockerell. He also showed them everything they needed to know about

School Sevens coming to town The World School Sevens is coming to Pakuranga next month. It will take place at Pakuranga Rugby Club on Friday December 14 2018 (from 6pm-9pm) and also Saturday December 15 (9-5:30pm).

It showcases the best U18 sevens boys and girls talent from New Zealand and the Pacific including U18 teams from Australia, Tonga, Fiji, Canada, Japan, Vanuatu plus New Zealand.

In addition there

will be a number of expat teams including Samoan Barbarians, Tongan Barbarians, NZ Niue, NZ Fijians and NZ Dutch.

This is the third year of the event and it is starting to see some real growth over the last few years. It has grown from 10 teams in 2016 to 19 teams this year.

The tournament is the brainchild of Phil Gaze who also eventmanages the Condor Sevens, the National Secondary School Sevens which has

grown exponentially from 16 teams to more than 100 teams over the last seven years.

In 2016 Gaze was in conversations with NZ Rugby who informed him that

the Australian Rugby Union wanted to develop their sevens programme. Gage caught wind of the conversation and the rest is history.

The event finals will be live on Sky.

Soccer girls upset Japan M

uch as I enjoyed Scott McLaughlin’s Supercar championship win in Newcastle on Sunday, the amazing effort of the New Zealand team in beating Japan to make the semi-finals of the Fifa Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay topped it.

The popular McLaughlin was favourite, especially after Kiwi rival Shane van Gisbergen’s Saturday victory was negated when it was ruled his car was lowered to the ground with the refuelling hose still attached during his final pit stop.

That left van Gisbergen gutted and he had to settle for fourth in Sunday’s final race in which McLauglin’s second behind David Reynolds secured him the title he had come so close to winning last year but for the three penalties he incurred. In contrast, nobody but coach Leon Birnie and his brave New Zealand team gave them a chance of beating highly-rated Japan in their Under-17 Women’s World Cup quarter-final.

Yet they played with confidence to hold them to a 1-all draw before winning a spine-chilling shootout 4-3.

With goalkeeper Anna Leat having made great saves, it was fitting she should become the heroine by slotting the final goal in the shootout following the success of Maya Hahn, Grace Wis-

Agnew’s Angle newski and Kelli Brown.

It was a wonderful success story, especially after the problems associated with the senior women’s coach earlier in the year when he was accused of negative tactics and bullying.

Unfortunately, similar accusations were made in other sports like rowing, cycling and women’s hockey which had enjoyed considerable international success before fading badly.

Meanwhile New Zealand were to face Spain in today’s (Thursday) first semi-final before Mexico play Canada in the other.

There can be few grumbles that coach Joe Schmidt, star first-five Jonathan Sexton and the Irish rugby team deserved Rugby International awards after a successful season capped with their Six Nations success and win against the All Blacks.

Ireland have come a long way under Schmidt’s stewardship although defence coach Andy Farrell, a duel league and union international, also deserves praise for his efforts.

Shea Ili commented: “We had a great time at Pakuranga College. It’s awesome to see the love of the game there and the junior teams showed a lot of potential. It’s always fun to get out and see the growth of basketball in the community, and how kids of all abilities just love having a shoot around.”

hanks to the efforts of three enterprising students, junior basketball players at Pakuranga College had the opportunity to take time out from their studies and shoot hoops with four members of the SKYCITY Breakers on Wednesday 21st November.

Rishi Kasireddy, Jon Dinglasan and Blair Truscott all entered a

competition run by Flava Radio, to win a visit from the Breakers to one lucky school. Rishi, who won a VIP experience with the team, doesn’t actually play basketball. However, as newly-appointed Chairperson of the Student Sports Council, she is taking her role very seriously.

She entered the competition on behalf of all of the school’s basketball fans, saying, “I really want people to know about the amaz-

ing basketball programme we have here at Pakuranga College. It’s run

by Josiah Maama, and he does such a great job!”

he ramshackle shed wears a cheerful look as Crystal Steel has transformed it into a cheerful and vibrant Christmas speciality shop that sits next to St Andrew’s Opportunity Shop on Vincent Street, Howick.

Three years ago Crystal realised that there were a lot of Christmas gifts and decor that people donated throughout the year which was taking up a lot of shelf space at the Op shop.

“We were running out of space and decided to have a separate Christmas shop in the shed next-door where people can buy a wide variety of Christmas stuff at a very cheap price.

Charity begins with Christmas Op shop

A wide variety of Christmas decor is available for less than half the price at the Christmas Speciality shop, says volunteer Crystal Steel.

“I remember the time when a gentleman bought a suit from us for around $20 and wore it to his wedding.

He dropped in at the shop on the way to the wedding to show us how well it fitted him,” she says.

Beverley Riley, who has also been a long time volunteer, says that more often than not people would buy stuff on layby and, on benefit day, they’d drop in to collect bags full of goodies.

Whilst there were lots more volunteers at the shop then, now the average age of volunteers is 70 to 80 years. The ladies fondly mention 96-year-old Lorraine Stewart who sometimes takes washing baskets home to give the old clothes a wash. She even irons them and gets them on a hanger, ready for sale.

As they say, it’s all for a good cause! ► The Christmas shop is open till December 8. Hours: 10am -2pm weekdays, 10am-12noon Saturdays.

Chelsea Winter’s Festive Cheese Log Prep time: 25 minutes, plus 1 hour setting time Serves: 16 ► 500g cream cheese ► �/� cup shelled pistachio nuts ► �/� cup pecans ► �/� cup hazelnuts ► 200g feta ► 1 tbsp Dijon mustard ► 1 tsp horseradish sauce ► 1 clove garlic, crushed ► zest of 1 lemon plus 2 tsp juice ► big pinch chilli flakes

Okay, it’s not the most flattering of names, but I like it! People go nuts over this, and it’s a really economical way to serve crackers and cheese for a crowd — which can be a costly exercise otherwise. And just look at it — it’s a beautiful log of festive cheese!

Preheat the oven to 180°C regular bake.

Take the cream cheese out of the fridge and let it come to room temperature.

Add the pistachios, pecans and hazelnuts

to a small roasting dish and bake in the oven for 8–10 minutes or until fragrant and turning golden. Chop to a coarse crumb (or use a food processor). Set aside.

Add the cream cheese, feta, mustard, horseradish, garlic, lemon zest and juice, chilli and peppers to a mixing bowl and beat with a wooden spoon to combine evenly (or use a food processor). Stir through the cranberries, apricots, chives

► ¼ tsp ground white pepper ► ¼ tsp freshly cracked black pepper ► ½ cup dried cranberries, finely chopped ► ½ cup dried apricots, finely chopped ► 2 tbsp chopped fresh chives ► 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

and parsley.

Lay one or two large pieces of greaseproof paper on the benchtop depending on whether you are making one or two logs. Spoon the mixture onto the paper in a rough log shape, fold the paper over and form into a log, or to your desired shape and size. It might take a bit of rerolling and shaping. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour.

Scatter the chopped nuts on a clean tray.

Unwrap the cheese log or logs and roll in the nut mixture to coat evenly. Wrap in cling wrap and refrigerate until needed — up to a few days, as long as it’s tightly sealed.

mployers and employees across New Zealand are in full preparation mode to celebrate a year of hard work with a Christmas party or social function.

As well as making sure everyone has a good time, employers and their staff need to be aware of some of the risks that can arise through social interaction outside the usual work environment, particularly when a drink or two is involved.

“They just need to consider the risks that can come about in these situations.

“Many owner-managers don’t realise, but a lot of the legislation which they have to adhere to during the working day applies just as equally to Christmas parties, and ignoring it could lead to costly and time-consuming legal issues,” she said.

Sexual harassment “If the work Christmas party is organised and paid for by the employer, the obligations generally remain the same as though it was in the workplace. Employers are therefore advised to clearly outline what is inappropriate behaviour and what the repercussions can be if misconduct takes place,” she said.

The Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) says that the definition of the ‘workplace’ — and therefore what constitutes workplace sexual harassment — has become broad due to the increase in digital technology, such as email and social media, which means our working hours are no longer limited to 9am-5pm.

Overconsumption of alcohol The celebration atmosphere also means there is a high chance of alcohol in the mix, which brings with it additional challenges for employers.

For health and safety purposes and in an attempt to reduce the chances of inappropriate conduct, Lestrange says employers should ensure the service of alcohol is responsible and employees have plenty access to water and food, “You might also consider an early cut-off time for the service of alcohol.”

Getting home safe The potential consequences for employers found to be negligent should not be underestimated.

If an employee is injured on their way home from the function, the employer could be faced with a workers’ compensation claim.

The seriousness of these issues should be enough to encourage employers to take proactive steps to educate and supervise their team.

Preparing transport home is a highly effective way to minimise the risk: “If someone gets too intoxicated, send them home safely straight away. Don’t let them get behind the wheel.”

Ruined reputations Professional and business reputations are at risk. Imagine the difficulty a boss would have managing their team if they drunkenly share inappropriate information about their love life.

Other examples might include bumping and grinding on the dance floor or a solo attempt on the karaoke microphone.

The Christmas party is supposed to reward staff for their hard work, and business owners should stress that before laying down the law.

Finally, “Don’t kill the fun – remind employees it is an enjoyable celebration, and that employees who do not adhere to the policy or code of conduct, spoil the party for everyone,” she said.

“Careful and thoughtful planning can help eliminate the risks in advance and ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time.”

For employees, Lestrange says the bottom line is: “No matter how much fun you’re having, you’re still officially at work.”

Christmas Wonder Park is going to be held for the very first time at Barry Curtis Park, Flat Bush on December 15 from 12noon to 6pm.

There will be carols on the greens, a Christmas story walkthrough that tells the traditional Christmas story in a modern way, fun and games as well as entertainment stalls.

Music performances, international food stalls and

information stalls for each community group as well as the Howick Local Board will be there to connect to the community.

Joshua Yang, a pastor with New Hope Community Trust based in Botany, says he came up with the idea of hosting a oneday celebration for Christmas in the heart of a new and growing community along with Local Howick Board member Mike Turinsky, also a pastor with the

He says that the vision of this event is to bring different cultural groups, various business parties, religious organisations and government officials in the area together, “to build a sense of community with the most important celebration of the year, reflecting a true Christmas spirit”.

Joshua says his passion has always been to bring the community together.

“I have organised a similar

event in St Heliers where school choirs and community groups came to together to present Carols on the Green; the idea was to bring them together, where schools and community groups (both Kiwi and multicultural groups) present their performances,” he says.

Macleans College students have designed the Christmas Walkthrough and schools like Mission Heights Jr College, Pakuranga Intermediate, Tindal

Park Primary and Botany Downs Secondary College are also involved in the event.

He says that a similar event was held two years ago in a school courtyard by Ormiston Community Vision and was sponsored by the local board.

“We developed on what has been done before and bring this event to a public park where there it reaches out to the entire community and gets them involved.”

oing your Christmas shopping online can mean not having to deal with car parking and crowded shops – and sometimes you can get real bargains when you buy online.

But beware, there are a lot of people out there who want to take your money and not deliver the goods. Think before you hit the check-out button.

“If you buy goods or services online, there are some really important things you need to know about who you are buying from because this can affect what your consumer rights are if the sale goes wrong,” says Louise Boswell of Citizens Advice Bureau Pakuranga.

“You’re covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act and the Fair Trading Act for goods or services sold by a business that is based in New Zealand - even if you bid for it in an auction. But if the seller is not a business or if they are based overseas you

don’t have much protection.”

Louise says that if you do want to buy from a private seller, you can minimise your risk by getting their full name and address (in case you need to track them down later), checking the feedback from past customers, and - if at all possible - inspecting the item before you hand over your money.

“If you bought your Christmas presents from a New Zealand trader then those presents are covered by the Consumer

Guarantees Act, even after you’ve gifted them and this also applies if you bought them on sale. That means they have to be fit for purpose, acceptable quality and fit their description,” she says.
