Tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world next to water. In fact, on any given day, more than 158 million Americans drink tea. Approximately 85 percent of tea consumed in America is iced, but the soothing and refreshing flavors of tea can also infuse fresh and unexpected character into a wide range of dishes, from desserts to popular finger foods like chicken wings. What’s more, tea has been shown to have significant health benefits. As green, black, oolong and white teas all come from the Camellia sinensis plant, tea drinkers can reap the health benefits from whichever tea they prefer. The major bioactive compounds in tea, called flavonoids, are also found in fruits and vegetables but appear in very high concentrations in tea. In fact, new research in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition links tea with cardiovascular health, cancer prevention, weight management, improved concentration and bone health, among others.

Delightful Tea Pairings Each type of tea has a distinct set of flavor characteristics. Peter Goggi, President of the Tea Council of the USA, explains the f lavor profiles of black, green, oolong and white teas, and how to pair them with your favorite foods. teas from tradit ion a l or ig i n s such a s India, Sri Lanka and China, as well as English and Irish breakfast varieties and flavored black teas such as Earl Grey, are characterized by a strong, aromatic flavor. These teas pair well with dark chocolate, sharp cheeses, eggs, meats and heartier foods because of their rich flavor and tannin levels.

teas exhibit a nat-

Bring filtered water to a full boil in teapot. Remove from heat and add 8–10 tea bags per quart. Steep for three to five minutes and pour over ice cubes or into additional cold water, based on desired taste. To serve, pour into tall glasses filled with ice; garnish with lemon or mint and sweeten as desired. Recipe courtesy of the Tea Council of the USA

Meals On Wheels of Coweta was seeing its budget cut – and searching for a way to serve more senior citizens. Bridging the Gap was polling its clients – finding out who they were and why they needed food. The two groups got together, and more meals than ever are being served – from a shiny new kitchen at the BTG headquarters on First Avenue. The partnership between the two programs recently celebrated its first year of collaboration. During that time, 111,635 pounds of food have gone to senior citizens locally. “Hungry’s bad no matter how old you are,” said Lizabeth Andrew, former board chairman for Meals On Wheels of Coweta. “No person in Coweta County – no matter their age – should

be hungry, but certainly not old folks.” Alison Wallace, executive director of BTG, said that group’s effort to figure out why people in Coweta County are hungry began early in the ministry’s history. BTG wanted to “not just put a Band-Aid on” the problem, she said, but to determine “the real needs.” A survey of people coming for food at BTG showed 32 percent of them were senior citizens. “It’s horrible that seniors are having to come through the doors to a food pantry,” she remem-

One day she was driving down Hospital Road, and she felt drawn to the Rutledge Center. She stopped, met Bobby Welch, who directs

AAMCO, the world’s largest chain of transmission specialists and leader in total car care, officially broke ground in Coweta County in Shenandoah Industrial Park for AAMCO University, commencing the building of the stateof-the-art training facility. AAMCO President and Chief Executive Officer Brett Ponton was on site for the groundbreaking on Aug. 5. “We are thrilled to officially begin development on AAMCO University,” said Ponton. “The creation of the new training facility supports our business model to deliver the

The perfect speech on Belisle. The Providence Journa l newspaper tra nscribed what followed. Here’s what the coach said without any rehearsal: “Heads up high. Heads up high. I’ve gotta see your eyes, guys. There’s no disappointment in your effort — in the whole tournament, the whole season. It’s been an incredible journey. “We fought. Look at the score – 8-7, 12-10 in hits. We came to the last out. We didn’t quit. That’s us! Boys, that’s us! “The only reason why I’ll probably end up shedding a tear is that this is the last

Sometimes we have plenty of time to write the perfect speech for the occasion. Sometimes, we have no time. This is about one of those “no time” times. The hometown team of Cumberland, Rhode Island was playing in the Little League World Series. They’d won their region and were representing New England. But they lost this game. And they were going home. Then their coach, Dave Belisle, called them over. Cameras for ESPN filmed the kids surrounding their coach on the infield and zeroed in

On the bright side day. That’s the best “winwin” story I’ve seen in a while. In other happy animal news, a group of orphans in Kenya who live at a home sponsored by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust just rescued over 100 baby elephants who lost their mothers to poachers. The elephants were relocated to property owned by the wildlife trust. Now, the human and elephant orphans visit and play together every day. The story included lots of pictures. It’s hard to tell who’s happier – the kids or the elephants. Closer to home, Raymond Burse, president of Kentucky State University, decided the school’s lowest-paid employees deserved more than a pat on the back for their efforts. Instead of asking the state legislature to boost the pay of non-faculty employees, Burse took a $90,000 annual pay cut with instructions that the money go to lowincome workers. Burse said he wanted university workers to know the school’s board and president “care about them and want to do the very best by them.” It’s refreshing – and rare these days – to see someone put their money where their mouth is. Thanks, President Burse. In ot her happy educa-

Sleeping pill sales must be off the charts. Anyone who watches the news for more than five minutes gets such a dose of trouble it’s hard to drift off to dreamland unassisted. Current stories range from race riots in Missouri to missiles striking Israel (again) to the videotaped beheading of an American journalist by Muslim terrorists. No one predicts that things will get better anytime soon. So wh at ’s a person to do? Easy. Keep reading. I recently hiked off into cyberspace in search of “good news.” Guess what? It’s actually out there on a website called www.sunnyskyz.com. These stories are good enough to share, so join me. They might just make your grits, granola or high-fiber supplement go down a little easier. Let ’s sta rt our tour of HappyLand in north Texas, w h e r e a n e ve n t c a l l e d “Empty the Shelter Day” was organized by people trying to get more animals adopted from 32 private and public animal shelters in the DallasFt. JOHN WINTERS time I’m going to coach you guys. But I’m going to bring back with me, the coaching staff is going to bring back, you guys are going to bring back that no one other team can provide – that’s pride. Pride. “You’re going to take that for the rest of your lives, what you provided for the town of Cumberland. You had the whole place jumping, right? You had the whole state jumping. You had New England jumping. You had

ESPN jumping. OK? “You want to know why? They like fighters. They like sportsmen. They like guys who don’t quit. They like guys who play the game the right way. If everyone would play baseball like the Cumberla nd A merica ns, t h is would be the greatest game. “The lessons you g uys have learned along the journey, you’re never going to forget. We’re going to have some more fun. We have two more days of fun. When you walk around this ballpark in the next couple of days, they’re going to look at you and say: ‘Hey, you guys were awesome!’ “Everybody has said: You guys are awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Absolutely awesome.

“It’s OK to cry, because we’re not going to play baseball together anymore. But we’re going to be friends forever. Friends forever. Our Little League careers have ended on the most positive note that could ever be. OK? Ever be. “There’s only going to be one team that’s going to walk out of here as World Series champions. Only one. We got down to the nitty-gritty. We’re one of the best teams in the world. Think about that for a second. In the world! Right? “So, we need to go see our parents, because they’re so proud of you. One more thing. I want a big hug. I want everyone to come in here for one big hug. One big hug, then we’re going to go

celebrate. Then we’re going to go back home to a big parade. “I love you guys. I’m gonna love you forever. You’ve given me the most precious moment in my athletic and coaching career, and I’ve been coaching a long time – a looooong time. I’m getting to be an old man. I need memories like this, I need kids like this. You’re all my boys. You’re the boys of summer. “So, for the last time, we’re going to yell Americans: One, two three – Americans! “OK. Good job. Let’s go. Time to go.” M ay we a l l h ave t h at coach. May we all be that “coach” in whatever we do. Until next time.

Instead of an empty room, she was greeted by students from every class she had taught during her 41-year career. Former students were there in person, on the phone or on video to say “Thank You” for the difference she had made in their lives. If savoring these stories doesn’t lift your load, there is one more thing you can do to chase those blues away. Move to another state. Data recently compiled by the CDC was studied by

researchers at Harvard and the Vancouver School. The researchers’ goal was to determine the happiest state in America. The winner? My home state of Louisia na ca me out on top. Yay us, y’all. By the way, Louisiana’s happiest cities are Lafayette, Houma, Shreveport-Bossier City, Baton Rouge, and Alexandria. The study is packed with st at i st ics a nd tech n ic a l details to explain the find-

ings, but anyone who’s spent a Saturday night in Cajun country knows you’ll look long and hard to find a group of people who enjoy life – and each other – more. Life is what you make it. In Louisiana they make it a joy. The state’s unofficial motto is “Laissez les bon ton roulette,” French for “Let the good times roll.” The evidence shows that following that piece of advice can put a smile on anyone’s face.

Cut off tips of chicken wings. Cut wings into two parts at joint, place in resealable plastic bag and pour tea-based marinade over wings. Seal well and mix to coat completely. Refrigerate overnight before preparing, turning bag every 12 hours. To cook, remove wings from refrigerator and bring to room temperature. Remove wings from bag and discard marinade. Drain very well. Preheat grill to medium. Grill wings until cooked through on both sides and juices are running clear, about six to eight minutes per side. Serve Hot Green Dipping Sauce on the side.

Rutledge’s progra ms for mentally retarded Cowetans. She also met Don Gangell. Gangell was at the local Meals on Wheels off ice, which has space in the Rutledge building. Wallace and Gangell began to talk about “how we could partner,” she remembered. At that point, BTG was distributing food twice a week. It was determined that if the ministry only gave out food boxes weekly, there would be food that could be channeled to MOW clients. MOW was also looking for answers. They had been getting meals from Piedmont Newnan Hospital in polysty-

It will provide AAMCO technicians, managers and franchisees with service training through a best-in-class curriculum within its hightech training facility and repair center. The school will train employees to be in a position to continually deliver quality service. It will also provide guidance to a successful career path at AAMCO. “A n o t h e r g re at b en e fit of AAMCO University is that it offers prospective AAMCO franchisees a first look at the operation and the company’s commitment to best practices from an owner’s view,” said Mike Ganjei, an AAMCO franchise owner and president of the National A A MCO Dealers Association. The educational facility will offer both lecture and hands-on technical instruction for up to 60 people at a time with a theater-style classroom and a simulated repair shop showcasing a real-life learning environment. rene foam trays. “We had to serve them quickly because they were warm,” Andrew recalled. MOW had reached the limit – 60 – with the number of meals it could get from the hospital, but the group’s waiting list continued to grow. Meals On Wheels leaders were searching for options the day Wallace stopped and talked with Gangell. “She said, ‘Let’s do this,’” Andrew remembered. “ I n Au g u s t , t h e f i r s t meals went out with Meals On Wheels,” Wallace said. An additional partnership with the Atlanta Food Bank brought more food into the equation, and banks and businesses donated freezers, a sealer, a stove and other equipment to modernize the kitchen at BTG.

• 1/2 cup lump crab meat • 4 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil Sprinkle tea leaves into medium-sized bowl. Pour steaming water over leaves and steep, covered, for two minutes. Strain tea, discarding leaves. Cool and hold. In blender, combine watermelon, onion, mint, cilantro, basil, jalapeno and garlic, and puree. Transfer to container and stir in reserved tea until combined thoroughly. Cover and refrigerate at least six hours before serving. To serve, ladle one cup soup into bowl and garnish with one tablespoon crabmeat and 1/2 teaspoon olive oil, drizzled.

Andrew noted the setup at BTG means Meals On Wheels can take meals in frozen trays from the BTG kitchen to a local senior citizen’s home. Volunteers deliver the meals, which the recipient can warm immediately or save for suppertime on another day. “You can deliver all the meals for a week at one time,” Andrew said. Meals On Wheels made sure all their clients had a microwave they could operate, and the group still offers a hot meal program for blind clients. “The more frozen meals we f ix, the more people we ca n ser ve ,” A nd rew marveled. “O u r s en ior s de s er ve more than what we’ve been able to give them,” Wallace said. “We can make a differ-

ence. We can find solutions.” “I think about the people who have been touched – and how God uses this ministry,” said Nathan Hightower, ch a i r m a n of t he Bridging the Gap board. Reflecting on what has happened through the MOWBTG collaboration, he said God has used “ordinary people … to make something extraordinary.”

Cowetans learn from public safety By Wes Mayer

Cowetans of all ages took advantage of the opportunity to explore the county’s public safety vehicles up close while shopping Tuesday evening. From 4 to 7 p.m., Coweta County celebrated the 30th anniversary of National Night Out, “america’s Night Out against Crime.” For t h e e ve n t , C owe t a County public safety departments set up tents to hand out information in front of the Kroger on Bullsboro Drive in Newnan, and the Newnan Police Depa rtment set up in front of BJ’s on Newnan Crossing Bypass. Officials distributed information to kids and adults about all forms of safety in and out of the home. Kids collected coloring books, pencils, badges and other toys to learn more about how to dial 911, how not to talk to strangers, why not to do drugs, and more. W hat caug ht most people’s attention were the law enforcement vehicles on display. In front of Kroger, those gat hered got a close look inside four police vehicles, a Vitalcare ambulance and the Coweta County sheriff’s Office helicopter. The proposed price is $5.19 per 1,000 gallons, which is the standard residential rate for usage up to 5,000 gallons per month. The rate per thousand gallons goes up as the total usage increases. Unlike most other business transactions, the more you buy, the higher the price per gallon. That's not because it costs the authority more money to provide the higher levels of water, rather it’s put into place as a water conservation measure to discourage the use of large amounts of water. Transportation Department recognized for its work reducing emissions By Celia Shortt celia@newnan.com

T he G eorg ia E nv i ronmental Protection Division recently awarded its Georgia Diesel Engines Reduction Gold Award to the transportation department of the Coweta County School System for its work to reduce the emissions of the school bus fleet. “This award recognizes school systems who have dedicated time, effort, and resources toward keeping our air clean,” said Dr. Doug Moore, director of operations for Coweta schools, at the August Board of Education meeting. He recognized Tra nspor tation Ma nager Judy Gresham and the foreman of the transportation shop, Keith McCullough. The GaDER School Bus Program helps school systems in Georgia by providing grants, technical assistance and education. Coweta County was one of the first school systems in the United States to put a new type of lower emission catalyst on its buses through an EPD grant in 2005, according to Gresham. Cu r rent ly, 9 0 percent of the county’s school bus fleet are cleaner-operating vehicles. The buses bought by the school system after 2007 were already lower-emission vehicles, and McCullough’s shop was able to retrof it the 1999 to 2006 models by installing new catalysts in them. The “older diesel buses emit a high amount of particles in the exhaust,” said
