n the heels of the holiday season, January and February have become the season of love.

Per brides and wedding vendors, January is the month they get moving on preparing their nuptials. And February, of course, features Valentine’s Day. There’s so much to love!

In the spirit of this season, we present eight Cowetans nominated by our readers as Great Hearts.

These are individuals whose kindness and compassion extends beyond their own home to their neighbors and the community at large. Their stories are told in the words of those who nominated them for this honor. We think it’s a superb way to show gratitude to the unsung heroes who lift us up with their love. See page 20.

Our annual Wedding Section starts on page 24 with a story about our featured couple, Mollie Whitehead and Brantley Wilson, whose vows were shared in church, a wedding venue that’s becoming less common these days.

Another feature spotlights the eternal symbol of matrimonial love: the wedding ring. We visit local jewelers and learn what they have to say about traditions and trends when it comes to engagement and wedding rings, see page 32.

“Under the Southern Sky” Reviewed by GLENDA HARRIS

“U

nder the Southern Sky” is my favorite, thus far, of Kristy Woodson Harvey’s books. Readers will love the main characters and how they face their challenges, evolving and maturing as the story unfolds. It is a quick and satisfying read that gets better and better.

Amelia and Parker, longtime friends from childhood, are both in the midst of significant life changes and heartbreak. Parker lost his wife to cancer, and Amelia is recently divorced from Thad, who cheated on her with a man.

A journalist, Amelia is building her career, hoping to soon write the “big story” and be on her way to fame. While doing research for her latest piece on couples who have, for whatever reason, stored embryos for the future, she is surprised and taken aback to see a familiar name on a list

of people who have not paid storage fees for their embryos, which are now deemed abandoned. On that list are the names of Parker and his late wife.

Amelia is taken aback to learn this, and thus begins her difficult dilemma, one that takes her back through her memories of Parker and a past she has tried for years to balance with her present.

Called “the next major voice in Southern fiction” by New York Times bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand, Harvey has written a compelling and satisfying story about life’s many unexpected changes and what we go through to figure it all out.

I recommend this story for all readers of contemporary fiction who appreciate themes of family relationships, forgiveness, grace and the embracing of life, even when it looks different than what we had planned.

Hot Dog, I Love the Wienie Man!

O

ver 13 years ago, I found a lone, discarded hotdog sitting on the rollers of a hotdog machine at work. It was so old it had started to wrinkle. Obviously, I couldn’t let this oddity pass me by so I grabbed it, let it completely dry out and coated it with shellac. I then stuck a pen through the length of the hotdog so only the nib would show.

I gave this hotdog pen to the owner of the hotdog machine. I was a big fan of the hotdog machine; it was a vintage reproduction and it made the owner’s office have a carnival flair.

Secretly, I was also a big fan of the owner of the hotdog machine, Joe. I’ve always believed that talent is a turn-on, and Joe was the most talented scenic painter I had ever met. He was also kind and funny, loved to garden and bonus: He wore Red Wing boots. I also wore Red Wing boots, but I’m from Minnesota where they’re made. He was from California where they’re not. And here we were, meeting in Atlanta, a city void of both snow and surf.

I never gave a hotdog pen to anyone before, nor had I made a hotdog pen, so I was a tad worried he might find both the pen and myself strange. I was super proud of my pen – couldn’t stop cracking up about it – and thankfully, Joe also thought it was hot diggity hilarious.

I had no idea how we would end. Fast forward to our 12th anniversary when he surprised me with a ring. I was in such shock, I was speechless, which is rare for me.

Even writing this, I can feel the electricity jump-starting my heart.

We decided to marry in Las Vegas. Vegas is a desert built on hope, an oasis to gamble for a fruitful future – crossing your fingers, betting on a jackpot so big your life will be changed forever. It was the perfect place to tie the knot after 13 years, to finally wed my Jackpot JoJo. We went to the Little White Chapel, a small church dripping with vintage vavoom, untouched since the days when celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Paul Newman and Judy Garland got married there. (Obviously, not to each other). There were so many excellent packages to choose from, ranging from a Pink Cadillac Ceremony to a Tunnel of Love Ceremony. But there was only one choice for both of us: Elvis.

It was a quick and casual affair, 15 minutes tops.

The chapel was so tiny they actually had pews for one person. Joe wore shorts and a shirt with art deco octopuses on it. I wore a green dress and a green veil with hot dogs sewn on it. The chapel provided a bouquet with the ceremony, but I came prepared. I 14 |

had bought hotdog toys, attached them to dowels, and stuck them in the bouquet. We both wore gold Elvis sunglasses.

Elvis sang. He grinded and hubba-hubbaed.

We spontaneously started to dance while he sang “Viva Las Vegas” because: a) it was awkward having him sing Joe shows the hotdog pen still works. at us while standing so close; b) it’s Elvis singing, duh!; and c) true joy makes you dance.

Joe still has the pen I made him. (Evidently, I stumbled onto an ancient Egyptian mummification ritual; the pen is still intact).

What's also intact is my utter amazement for the universe’s plans for us all, how unseen cosmic cogs click in place, unfolding our destinies.

To be frank, I find the odds astonishing that a dehydrated hotdog pen could bond two people – and still work after all these years to write these words. NCM

In April 2025 alone, Clothes Less Traveled awarded $333,250 in grants to 56 organizations.

T

here’s little Newnan and Coweta residents enjoy less than the drive to Peachtree City. As most locals lament, afternoons on Bullsboro Drive can often stretch to evening.

The warehouse-scale thrift store, Clothes Less Traveled (CLT), is one reason to make the trip, despite the traffic.

And now, Newnan has its own Clothes Less Traveled, an outlet that’s an easy drive down Jackson Street to Avery Park, across from Little Giant Grocery Store.

The petite new storefront boasts plenty of parking, a happy staff, and curated picks for women and men. It also funds grants and opportunities for organizations and individuals here in Coweta and back in its home county of Fayette. According to its website, Clothes Less Traveled has funded over $9 million in grants since it opened in 1997, and much of that has benefitted Coweta.

Many people don’t know that, according to Gina Watkiss, a science teacher at The Heritage School and CLT board member.

“With three years on the CLT board, I continue to hear that many Coweta residents think that CLT only funds nonprofits in Fayette County,” says Watkiss. “But CLT has always served nonprofits in both counties; it simply happened that the store is located in Peachtree City.”

The second CLT store opened on August 8 last year at 10 The Boulevard, Suite 104 in Newnan's Avery Park area.

Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the boutique-style shop offers curated clothing for women and men.

“By having our new shop in Newnan, we are hoping to draw more clientele and supporters,” says Watkiss. “Our new shop is small and is like a boutique with great clothes at a fabulous price!”

There’s often a $1 rack prominently displayed, according to the local board member.

As a nonprofit thrift shop, every purchase at both CLT locations supports local charities. In fact, nearly half of CLT's grant recipients are located in Coweta County.

In April 2025 alone, CLT awarded $333,250 in grants to 56 organizations. Coweta recipients that month included Coweta FORCE, CASA, The Samaritan Clinic, Backstreet Arts, Newnan Theatre Company, CORRAL, Angel House, Coweta Pregnancy Services and RiverLife.

“I also served on the Grants Committee this year,” says Watkiss, “and was impressed by the local nonprofits that we were able to award grants.”

The journey of Clothes Less Traveled began humbly

in 1997 when MaryAnn Cox and Joan Velsmid opened the first thrift shop in Peachtree City. People had been dropping off donations at Cox’s office at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and the collections grew so large that the only solution was to open a store.

The shop started in a small storefront on Huddleston Road and was named The Clothes Less Traveled by Janet McGregor Dunn. Since then, it’s grown into an impressive 25,000-square-foot flagship location.

Along with providing grants to local nonprofits, Clothes Less Traveled offers scholarships to student volunteers.

“It has been an honor to present scholarships at the East Coweta High School Seniors Honors Night,” Watkiss says.

“I have met graduating seniors who strive for excellence in all areas of their lives and am impressed by the hours that are put in volunteering at CLT.” On their website, CLT’s mission is simply stated: to empower change in our community by giving away our profits in the form of grants to local charities, as well as scholarships.

Watkiss encourages students to volunteer, noting that they can apply for scholarships not only when they graduate but also while in college.

“It’s a win-win,” says Watkiss.

While the Newnan location doesn’t accept walk-in donations due to limited space, CLT offers regularly scheduled “Fill the Truck” events in and around Newnan.

For nonprofits interested in grants, the process is straightforward. Step 1: Fill out the eligibility form. Step 2: Once the eligibility form is accepted, complete the grant application. The next round of applications are due by Jan. 17. Applications are available at clotheslesstraveled.org.

“We hope to grow bigger in Coweta, but best to start with a small space,” says Watkiss.

Her message to the community is clear: “Support this mission by visiting and making purchases. Volunteer!” NCM

Paula says: Loretta Hamby has such a selfless dedication to helping others, demonstrated through acts of compassion, kindness and generosity without expecting anything in return.

She makes many sacrifices for the wellbeing of our community, our church and individuals. She generously gives time, support and resources to help others by volunteering or simply listening when someone is in need of a friend. She has strong morals which are authentic and is trustworthy and respected by those around her. She leaves people feeling better with her kindness.

Andrew says: Whitney Hubbell is the kind of leader whose character shines through every action she takes. She consistently goes out of her way to support others, whether it’s offering help before anyone asks, opening her doors to those in need, or finding thoughtful ways to uplift the people around her. I have personally watched her feed the homeless without hesitation, stop everything she was doing to help an elderly woman get her disabled vehicle running again, and even take that same woman out to dinner so she wouldn’t have to eat alone.

Acts like these aren’t rare for Whitney; they’re simply who she is. Her commitment to the community is not just a part of her work; it is woven into her very fabric. Whitney pours her time, energy and heart into creating opportunities for others to grow, heal and feel seen. Her generosity is matched only by her genuine compassion, making her a steady source of encouragement and hope for countless individuals. For these reasons, and many more, Whitney exemplifies the very spirit of a Great Heart Award recipient.

Evan says: Whitney does so much to be involved in the community. She loves going to Bridging the Gap, helping with the Chamber, and participating in community events such as the Canathon at Western Elementary.

This group now includes about 60 members, thanks to Terri's devotion to building the network of friends.

Her friends say: Terri Jackson is the epitome of a citizen who exemplifies goodness and kindness. As a member of Piedmont Fitness Center, she and her husband Bruce, a Vietnam veteran who died in 2021 from complications of Lewy Body, would lunch with a few other members of the gym. After Bruce died, Terri began coordinating small groups of gym members for dining, movies, excursions, and she even created a pickleball group. Like Terri, many in the group are widows. What began as a small group of four or five is now an organized social club of approximately 60 members ranging in age from 35 to almost 90.

Due to Terri’s welcoming and inviting nature, relationships across multiple generations have been formed. Her kindness and organizational skills have opened social outlets for many gym members and fostered relationships outside of the gym.

Managing and coordinating these activities requires extensive time and dedication. Terri’s work means so much to her friends at the gym. Without her kindness and initiative in fostering relationships, many of us would not have formed lasting friendships outside of the gym setting.

Terri Jackson is most deserving of being recognized as being a friend who goes over and beyond. We speak for many of her friends and family when we say she is a “Rockstar” who deserves our gratitude.

Great Heart: Don McCoy Bill, Stephanie and Barbara's nomination reads: It is an honor to nominate a truly remarkable individual for the Great Heart Award – a person whose generosity, creativity and unwavering compassion shine as brightly as the holiday lights he lovingly builds each year. At 49, Don McCoy carries with him a life story shaped by resilience.

Growing up poor and food insecure in an economically depressed city, and helping to care for a chronically ill mother, he learned early what hardship looks like and, more importantly, what kindness can mean.

At 20, determined to build a better future, he joined the United States Marine Corps, serving nine years in cyber security. His service strengthened not only his technical skillset but also his commitment to protecting and uplifting others. Today, he channels that commitment into his deep love for technology, 3D printing and the holidays. In 2014, when his sister-in-law gifted him his very first Raspberry Pi, something magical began.

He created his first holiday lights-to-music show, not knowing it would become an annual tradition cherished by family, neighbors and the community. Year after year, he has poured his own “allowance” into decorations, electronics and new displays. What once played from a speaker on his front porch has evolved into a spectacular synchronized radio broadcast on 93.9 FM from 7 to 11 p.m. daily, now featuring more than 19 songs and an evergrowing array of dazzling 3D-printed decorations.

His work is not just a hobby; it is a labor of love.

Each October, he begins weeks of preparation to ensure everything is ready to light up the night starting the day after Thanksgiving. But the true heart of his display lies in its purpose: Every single year, the family collects monetary donations, and 100% of the proceeds are used to fight childhood hunger. Hungry, a national leader in combating food insecurity.

The other half goes directly to his children’s local schools to help pay off school lunch balances, easing the burden on local families in need.

Don's kindness doesn’t stop at the edge of the lawn.

He also supports his daughter, son and their friends as they run annual hot chocolate and popcorn nights, raising hundreds of dollars to add to the family’s donations.

Together, they have created a tradition of giving that not only brings joy, but also fills real, urgent needs within their community. From humble beginnings to military service to becoming a beacon of generosity each holiday season, he has turned his own childhood challenges into a lifelong mission to help others. His heart, his dedication and his compassion make the world brighter – one light, one song, one child helped at a time.

Great Heart: Carol Thompson Nominated by: Connie Miller Connie says: Acts of kindness seem few and far between these days. However, Carol Thompson, my next door neighbor for 26 years, never ceases to be one of those very thoughtful people.

Ever since we moved in next to them in 1999, she has brought The Newnan Times-Herald newspaper and put it on our front porch (even in rain or snow).

Carol is an excellent baker and shares her goodies with us often. When we have had a death in the family or sick ourselves, she will be sure to bring over some comfort food. She is in her 80s now, but that doesn’t stop her.

Elaine says: When I moved to Newnan, I was newly single and facing one of the biggest transitions of my life. I didn’t know anyone here and wasn’t sure how to start over. Then I met Brenda Vidamour, and everything changed. From the very beginning, she went out of her way to make me feel welcomed and included.

She invited me to local art classes, offered to show me around town, and opened her home for gatherings and parties. Her warmth, kindness and genuine interest in helping me feel at home turned what could have been a lonely and difficult chapter into one filled with friendship, laughter and community.

It’s rare to meet someone who so naturally extends themselves to others, not for recognition, but simply out of love and compassion. Brenda embodies what it means to have a great heart. She reminds me daily of the power of kindness and the difference one caring neighbor can make in someone’s life.

Because of her, I don’t just live in a new town; I feel part of a community.

Great Heart: Lori Whitney Katie says: Lori Whitney has created a day program and a social program for adults with developmental disabilities in Coweta County that have become lifelines for countless families, including mine. My daughter Zoe attends her day program, and both of my adult children attend her social program. Lori treats everyone with kindness, patience and compassion, and she has built a community where people feel valued, supported and loved. Lori’s impact goes far beyond her programs.

When my youngest child, Mattie, was in the hospital and dying, Lori placed Zoe on a scholarship so she could attend the day program full time and have some sense of normalcy. That act of generosity grounded Zoe during an incredibly difficult time.

Lori volunteers with Meals on Wheels, works with other nonprofits, and goes out of her way to help anyone in the community who has a need. She has helped countless disabled people and families, all while raising her own profoundly disabled daughter as a single parent.

She is kind. She is calm. And her heart is huge. Lori embodies the spirit of the Great Heart Award. She is full of heart, love and generosity, and she makes a difference for everyone around her.

Rhoda says: Lori gives daily of her time and talents to the community. Her leadership of the Special Needs Adults at Hoping Forward has been the lifeline that my adult son needed. Lori is constantly looking for needs not being met and assisting our disabled adults to fi ll those gaps with purpose and meaning. She has devoted her life to serving others who are often struggling to find their way.

Lori uses her day off to deliver Meals On Wheels to the elderly. If you are at a community event, you will likely see Lori unfurling her daughter’s wheelchair as they look for ways to help others.

Cyndi says: Lori is wonderful with special needs adults. Even under stress, she has a smile on her face.

When they got engaged, Mollie Whitehead and Brantley Wilson knew one thing for sure about their wedding: They would exchange their vows in Mollie’s hometown of Newnan, at her home church, Central Baptist.

“I grew up there and have known Central Baptist as my home church all my life,” says Mollie. “I was dedicated there as a newborn and baptized there as a preteen, so I always knew I wanted to get married there. It was a quick and easy decision to get married in Newnan at my church.”

Brantley was in full agreement. The couple met while attending college at Georgia Southern in Statesboro. After college, they were both living in Atlanta when they discovered by reading posts online that they’d attended the same World Series game there in 2021; they reconnected online after that, went on

a date a couple weeks later, and were officially dating in early 2022.

“He met my family and fell in love with Newnan,” says Mollie, a 2015 graduate of Newnan High School.

From Macon, Brantley works as a financial analyst for a financial company based in Boston, while Mollie works in human resources for a large general contractor in Atlanta. The couple lives in Brookhaven now but look forward to moving south to Newnan, “hopefully in early 2026,” says Mollie.

The pair exchanged vows on June 14, 2025. Mollie is the daughter of Tim and Wendi Whitehead of Newnan, and Brantley is the son of Eddie and Penny Wilson of Macon.

The couple leaned on the expertise of several local vendors to pull off their black tie wedding and reception. Mollie shares their experience on the following pages.

“It felt natural to have our wedding in a place that meant so much to me and meant a lot to Brantley, too. A wedding can be whatever you want these days, but we’re both more on the traditional side of things and wanted it in church with hymns and all those things. Our former pastor, Dr. Joel Richardson, married us. Everyone at Central was great and very easy to work with. They want you to make sure your marriage is centered around God, and that’s what the ceremony is all about – the joining of two people in a holy covenant. That was the first and foremost important thing to us.”

All of that can be so stressful, but on the wedding day, I wasn’t even thinking about what all was going on outside of where I was at the moment, and that was a blessing in and of itself – to know she had it all under control.”

As soon as we started talking about marrying, I knew Morgan was where we would go for rings. Brantley worked with Jeff and Tracy and the team [at Morgan] to create the beautiful and most perfect rings for us. The Morgans, Jeff and Camille and their family, went to Central and I grew up with their son, Jake. It was a given that when I was engaged, that was the place to go. We got our wedding bands there, too, and I got Brantley’s wedding gift, a watch, there. We were there multiple times and they were so nice to help us figure things out over many sessions.”

Mollie describes her emerald engagement ring as “beautiful and most perfect.”

“When we were looking for somewhere to have our reception, there weren’t many places in Newnan that could hold a lot of people indoors.

I don’t have good luck, so I knew if I chose something outside, it would rain or be the hottest day of the year. We knew we wanted something traditional and indoors, so we looked around and The Newnan Centre was exactly what we were looking for. They provided tables and chairs, and their team was great, very helpful, answered all our questions, and made sure we had exactly what we needed.”

“Food is a big part of the wedding day, so there’s a lot that rests on the food, and I think Elegant Expressions knocked it out of the park in every aspect. The chef and owner, Lori Corley, had so many different options, it was hard to narrow it down to what our selections would be.

We ended up with delicious appetizers, including chicken taquitos with ranch sauce. We had hushpuppies, a Southern Caesar salad, chicken breasts, beer-braised short ribs, mashed potatoes, roasted seasonal vegetables, and orzo.”

“Bonne is fabulous; I could not recommend her enough.

She’s an artist and a baker, and I don’t think that always happens; we knew we wanted to use her, given how talented she is in both regards. I knew she could do whatever we wanted and do it well. She can execute pretty much anything: a groom’s cake, traditional wedding cake, everything is in her talent pool. We did a traditional four-tier wedding cake with three flavors. I’m a big chocolate lover, so we did a layer of chocolate for me, red velvet for my husband, and a traditional white cake with raspberries.” NCM

wo million people get married each year in America, according to USAFacts.org, and for most, their wedding day is one of the happiest occasions in their lives. Wedding rings serve as physical reminders for husbands and wives of not only their special day but also the promise of love and commitment they've made.

The tradition of wedding rings has been around for centuries and, over time, the trends and styles have undergone significant changes, but as Jeff Morgan, owner of Morgan Jewelers in downtown Newnan, says, “The simple gold band has been around for centuries.”

Often, that was the only adornment people could afford, and so both men and women wore similar, plain rings.

Over the past century, diamond engagement rings have gained popularity, with the stone itself symbolizing the everlasting bond between two people. Morgan notes that, as time goes on, the desired diamond size for an engagement ring continues to increase.

Amidst the ever-changing and evolving nature of the wedding jewelry industry, three local expert jewelers are ready to help brides and grooms fi nd their perfect rings.

In 1962, Fred and Josephine Morgan opened Morgan Jewelers on the downtown Newnan square.

Their son, Jeff Morgan, started helping in the store, sizing rings when he was 15. By 1979, Jeff was working full time at the store, eventually taking over ownership when his parents retired.

With nearly five decades of experience in the jewelry business himself, Jeff has witnessed countless trends rise in popularity and then wane. For many years, he says, halo rings – a ring with a central gem surrounded by smaller diamonds – were all the rage. The halo ring has declined in popularity, replaced by solitaire rings, which feature a singular gemstone or diamond.

Jeff says the renewed popularity of solitaire rings reflects a trend he’s noticed in the past few years: Brides and grooms now lean more toward traditional styles. Morgan Jewelers, he says, has experienced a shift towards classic yellow gold rings, whereas a few years ago, white gold jewelry was in fashion; he's also noted a decreased interest in alternative metal rings for men, with most grooms opting for yellow gold.

emerald cuts are currently the most popular with brides. Although the traditional halo designs are not sold as much, Throgmorton mentions that there’s been increased interest in hidden halo details in engagement rings.

Downtown Newnan Jewelry craftsmanship runs in the Hubbell family. Richard Hubbell fi rst learned to make jewelry on a Navajo reservation in New Mexico.

In 1992, alongside his wife, Lee Ann Hubbell, Richard opened their custom jewelry store in Newnan, off Bullsboro Drive.

In 2021, the store moved to its current location in downtown Newnan.

Meghan Proctor, daughter of Richard and Lee Ann and owner of Hubbell Proctor Design, began learning the craft at just 6 years old. In the decades since, she has carried on her father’s legacy by creating custom jewelry.

Unlike more traditional jewelry stores, Hubbell Proctor Design offers customers the ability to design custom jewelry. Brides and grooms may choose to cast their own bands at Hubbell, giving them the opportunity to be an integral part of the special process.

In recent years, Proctor says she’s noticed wedding ring trends changing for both men and women.

She has watched a shift towards the more classic styles for women’s engagement rings, such as solitaires with oval diamonds and yellow gold bands.

She says there’s also been an increase in sentimentality in the wedding ring business. More and more frequently, according to the jewelry creator, men and women are bringing in inherited wedding bands for refurbishing and resizing.

As a jeweler, Proctor knows that brides, especially, want a ring that's unique to them, and with custom design available at Hubbell, that individualized style is within their reach.

“You think it, we can make it,” says Proctor.

Morgan’s at White Oak Center Newnan

Jim Morgan, brother of Jeff Morgan and son of Fred and Josephine Morgan who originally opened Morgan Jewelers in Newnan, operates yet another Morgan family jewelry business.

Growing up in a jewelry store, Jim knew this would be his future profession, and so he devoted his time to learning all he could about the craft. He attended his first jewelry school as a teen and later obtained a gemology degree.

“I felt like knowledge of the industry was the most important thing for me to have when starting a business,” says Jim. In 2006, he opened Morgan's Jewelers in Ashley Park, where the store remained for 14 years before moving to Thomas Crossroads and, finally, to its current location at White Oak. With nearly 20 years of experience in the jewelry-selling industry and many more years studying the craft, Jim is well-acquainted with the shifting trends of the wedding ring market. He says that, more than any other aspect of ring design, the diamond shape is what fluctuates most: “The trending shapes over the last few years have changed dramatically. Round is the most sellable diamond, but right now we’re seeing a marquise trend.”

metals such as gold. In the past, Morgan's at White Oak sold many men’s rings adorned with diamonds, but Jim says that trend has since fallen out of favor.

Morgan's at White Oak also does plenty of engraving, specifically for bridesmaids and groomsmen.

Jim says an increasing desire for unique, individualized pieces has moved him and his team to shift their focus to a more custom-friendly model, ensuring that every customer leaves with their dream ring. NCM

he details of a wedding are extremely personal to the bride and groom. And Amber Bibler, of Bedazzled Flower Shop in Sharpsburg, says it’s important for couples to lean more into what’s personal to them than what’s trending nationwide, even when that comes to flowers.

Bibler pinpoints six distinct requests brides are making for wedding bouquets.

These trends include employing whimsy and pastel colors, using earth-tone flora, creating classic bouquets, choosing elegant flowers, and adding personal elements like family heirlooms.

Regardless of trends, Bibler reiterates that, when selecting a bouquet, it’s critical to be loyal to your personal preferences and style.

1. Dreamy, Vibrant Garden Feelings

With the rising popularity of the TV show “Bridgerton,” brides are inspired to ask for wedding themes based on whimsical wildflowers, echoing the style seen in the show.

The historical authenticity, romantic elegance and everlasting appeal of the Bridgerton-inspired wedding are all mirrored in these pastel color schemes.

By striking a balance between modern and traditional styles, pastels produce a beautiful atmosphere. A bevy of brides aspire to have a wedding that Lady Whistledown would write about in the most recent society papers.

When pastel hues are used in flowers, decorations and clothing, guests feel as if they’ve stepped into an enchanting garden gathering reminiscent of Bridgerton. This makes brides feel like the star of their own period drama due to the delicate and gentle tones that create a whimsical ambiance that's both elegant and appealing.

According to Bibler, “Pampas grass is a particularly popular plant in these bouquets, as it can be seen growing in many gardens in this area.”

Pampas grass fits particularly well with modern, rustic and boho-chic styles. These bouquets frequently have natural components and appear to have been handpicked by the florist with little alteration. However, a great deal of imagination and care goes into these designs. However, Bibler notes, this trend frequently results in unforeseen challenges when the bride’s expectations for bouquets don’t align with practical considerations, such as flower availability or seasonal constraints. On multiple occasions, brides have called her shop to ask for last-minute assistance in rectifying the situation, according to Bibler.

Don’t Be a Stranger Written by LISA GENTRY

I

have what some might call a bad habit, especially in this day and age when documentaries about mysterious murders are all the rage.

So, I like to talk to strangers. I know, I know, they tell us the day we’re born to “not talk to strangers,” but I haven’t let that rule sink in.

People are just amazing individual stories.

Many quick errand runs have often turned into outright gab sessions. Before moving here to Coweta, a coworker who I carpooled with always gave me stern orders: “Stick to the list,” she would say when making a stop at Publix on the way home.

From Henry County and “newish” to Newnan, Lisa Gentry is a lifelong Georgian, wife, boy mom of two, Jesus follower and cancer fighter who works in education. She clearly knows how to have a good time – and has never met a stranger.

Publix seems to be my weak spot for talking to strangers.

I had crossed paths with a young man who held one loaf of bread and wandered around the store like a lost puppy. I was near the produce section when I fi nally decided to speak to the stranger by sharing a simple compliment on his choice of bread.

What I didn’t know was that it would lead to a 30-minute discussion about life that led to us praying beside the banana stand.

When I got back to my friend's truck, she asked what took so long.

As I told her the story she laughed, not at all surprised that I made a compliment about bread and then ended up having a prayer session.

Thank goodness she liked me or I might not have been able to get to work the next day.

Now in Coweta, my Publix social time seems to have followed me.

I had made what was, of course, supposed to be a quick stop. My husband had the cart, and I told him I’d be right back; I just needed to grab some peanut butter.

In the store, a mom with small kids, who never have small voices, made an apology for them. I told her, “Oh honey, don’t worry now, save that for when they’re teenagers.”

My saying that made an older man near us chuckle, and we strangers ended up talking.

Several minutes later, he took a two dollar bill from his wallet and passed it to me, saying to “never forget this conversation today, and let this be the reminder.”

I have that bill in my purse – and a great thankfulness for having a patient husband.

So, yes, I talk to strangers. And I don’t plan on stopping. Maybe one day I’ll have the chance to tell about the time I met strangers at Belk who helped get me home as the store was closing after I bought their grandson a teddy bear.

Thank goodness for prayers in Publix and the kindness of strangers. NCM

A Cowetan’s First Time Abroad Seven Days, Four Cities in Europe Written by CAROLINE NICHOLSON

espite the increasing glorification of international travel on social media, venturing outside of your home country can be daunting, especially for someone whose greatest foray past our borders was a high school trip to Canada six years prior. It’s one thing to know that life is different outside of the United States and an entirely other thing to experience it. In September 2024, I took the plunge and spent a week in Europe with my best friend and seasoned traveler, Anna.

After arriving at London’s Heathrow Airport, I met up with Anna, who had been living abroad for two months, and we started our day with a train ride into the heart of London Town where we walked through Hyde Park and gawked at cars driving on the “wrong” side of the road. Our walk through the historic park led us to the Victoria & Albert Museum, which I admit was on my itinerary thanks to a Taylor Swift exhibit there.

After the museum stop, we visited South Kensington Books and Papersmiths for a glimpse into British consumerism before checking into our charming garden Airbnb. For dinner, we chose a chic Italian restaurant called Larch. The food was delicious, and our meal came with access to London’s highest public garden, Sky Garden, which offers views of the city from within a stunning greenhouse. You can look out on London and the Thames through the tall walls of windows, from their outdoor observation decks, or from the bar nestled among plants and greenery.

Back on ground level, it was time for our Jack the Ripper walking tour. The Ripper was a notorious serial killer in London’s Whitechapel neighborhood in the late 19th century. For over a century, his identity has remained a mystery, adding to the horror surrounding the case. The tour was equal parts creepy, informative and gory. I don’t recommend it for those easily disturbed, although it did offer a unique perspective on the city and a glimpse into its murkier history.

On our second day in London, we had a traditional English breakfast at St. Pancras Station where we boarded our luggage. The station was gorgeous, and we got to see a red phone booth, checking off an essential item on any London to-do list. From breakfast, we walked through more of the city to Word on the Water, a small boat bookstore that floats atop a canal. It was a peculiar experience, browsing books with the ground rocking beneath you. Despite the swaying, I loved the little bookstore and the unique book-buying adventure.

After strolling back through London, we caught the Eurostar, the worldfamous bullet train, and headed to the next city on our tour.

Paris

Because it was my first time in Paris, a city I had dreamed about visiting since I was a child, Anna booked us a few nights in a hotel with a view of the Eiffel Tower. Upon arrival, we rushed to our room and out onto the balcony; from there, the city sprawled in front of us, and watching over it all was the Eiffel Tower. I am unashamed to admit that I cried when I saw it.

After soaking up the view, we left for dinner at Gigi Rigolatto where the sights were equally stunning. The Italian-Parisian restaurant features a warm and chic interior and outdoor patio seating with views of the tower. We enjoyed our mixed drinks and entrees while serenaded by live music.

Up close, the Eiffel Tower is breathtaking, illuminated yellow against the royal blue sky. Every night after sunset, it sparkles for five minutes at the start of each hour. I’m not sure the Parisians like it all that much, but to me, seeing it for the first time, it was marvelous and easily one of my favorite parts of the whole trip.

Our second day in the city was spent in Disneyland Paris to celebrate Anna’s birthday. The day was filled with roller-coasters, an Alice in Wonderland hedge maze, and yummy food, including churros from a restaurant based on the movie “Coco.” The theme park shares some rides with its American counterparts, such as Thunder Mountain and Phantom Manor, the French version of the beloved Haunted Mansion. However, the park also features unique attractions like La Tanière du Dragon (The Lair of the Dragon) underneath Sleeping Beauty’s castle.

For our final full day in Paris, we had a packed itinerary that started with a classic French breakfast of croissants and chocolat chaud (hot chocolate) at Les Deux Magots. This famous Parisian cafe has been open since 1884. Anna and I sat outside, people watching and dipping our croissants in the rich hot chocolate.

Next, we headed to La Perlerie to make special souvenirs that would serve as tangible memories of our trip. At La Perlerie, you have the choice to make a bracelet or necklace full of personally selected charms. I ended up with a bracelet

of gold charms and Anna had a colorful necklace with almost 20 charms. This was one of my favorite things we did abroad.

In the afternoon, we headed to the entrance of the Paris catacombs to fulfill an interest of mine as a lifelong horror fan. The Paris catacombs were built in the 18th century after the city’s cemeteries became overfilled with bodies. The catacombs feature more than 170 miles of underground ossuaries for the dead. The self-guided tour started with an eerie spiral staircase descent to the bottom where long corridors lead to the main rooms. In those chambers, we were greeted with room upon room of human bones and skulls, often arranged in patterns. While it was a uniquely interesting experience, it disturbed me more than I anticipated.

After our trip to the bowels of Paris, we enjoyed a dinner cruise on the Seine. At our private table aboard the small dinner cruise ship, we enjoyed pasta, drinks and dessert before heading to the top deck to see the city from a new vantage point. The views from the river were gorgeous. We saw the Eiffel Tower from a new angle and glimpsed part of the Louvre.

The next morning, we caught the train enroute to another French town.

Le Bar-sur-Loup

After a beautiful five-hour train ride through the French countryside and a 45-minute car ride, we finally arrived in the small town of Le Bar-sur-Loup where we felt as if we’d stepped out of reality and into a postcard. The town is nestled in a valley overlooking the Loup River and is easily the most picturesque place I’ve ever visited. After checking into our cozy Airbnb, we walked a few steps from our house to Le Michelangelo, a pizzeria, for dinner.

The next day, we visited a local boulangerie for breakfast, and I got to use my rusty French skills to order pastries. Meandering up and down the hilly cobblestone roads of Le Bar-sur-Loup, we got a taste of the culture as we watched older men smoking and chatting on patios and heard children laughing from inside schoolgrounds. On our walk, we stumbled into the tourism office, which was located inside an old church. There, we met a kind local who supplied us with a map and plenty of recommendations.

With bad weather on the horizon, we enjoyed an early lunch on the patio of a casual French restaurant and were touched by the friendliness of the locals. After shopping in the town’s general store, we returned to our Airbnb where we were sequestered for the rest of the day due to a heavy rainstorm. The next day, we landed in the last city on our European tour.

Cannes

After a short bus journey, we went for a rooftop breakfast at Hôtel Belle Plage. The breakfast buffet was tasty, but the views were the main attraction. Located just steps from the beach, the restaurant has views of the Bay of Cannes and the city itself. The combination of blue waters, lush mountaintops and rust-colored rooftops kept our eyes busy while we ate.

After breakfast, we descended into the city and to the beach we’d been admiring all morning. The water was coolly refreshing, so we swam for a while before heading to the Église Notre-Dame d’Espérance, a 16th century church. Next, we ventured into the city’s abundant shopping district.

Cannes is well known as the host city for the annual Cannes Film Festival, meaning that much of its population is rich and famous; many of the shops there are high end designer stores not within our budget, but we enjoyed taking in the variety of people milling about.

We spent the rest of our time in Cannes in a train station cafe, waiting for our evening train to take us back to Paris, where we would leave for home in the U.S. the next day.

The friends ended their tour in Cannes.

Final Thoughts

This was a trip of a lifetime and one I am so grateful I had the opportunity to take with my best friend. We crammed so many experiences and cities into such a short amount of time, though, that I felt like I needed another week off to recuperate.

Like any good journey should do, this trip served to teach me a lot about myself as well as the broader world outside of the small, insular community I grew up in. I was exposed to cultures different from my own and learned that I'm capable of navigating foreign countries. Traveling abroad isn’t as scary as it seems. Now, it feels as if the world has opened in front of me, and I can’t wait to see more of it. NCM

fter the wedding, date nights in a marriage are so important. A report recently conducted

by The Institute for Family Studies stated that couples with frequent date nights were 14 to 15 percentage points more likely to report being “very happy” in their marriages compared to those who reported less regular date nights.

Co-authors of the study stated: “Date nights may solidify an expectation of commitment among couples by fostering a sense of togetherness, by allowing partners to signal to one another – as well as friends and family – that they take their relationship seriously, and by furnishing them with opportunities to spend time with one another, to communicate, and to enjoy fun activities together.”

A night out can be enjoyable, though it may not always align with budgetary constraints. To demonstrate appreciation for your significant other, consider preparing a selection of refined recipes at home. Utilize this opportunity to design a thoughtful meal plan featuring your partner’s favorite dishes or desserts, or recreate a menu item from your wedding celebration.

Reflect on memorable experiences, such as your honeymoon or a special trip, by crafting a dish inspired by those occasions.

Mussels Steamed with Wine ½ 1 ½ 2 1/8 1 ¼ 6 1/3

pound andouille shallot cup butter cups dry white wine teaspoon black pepper bay leaf teaspoon thyme quarts scrubbed, soaked mussels cup chopped chives

Cook andouille over medium heat until brown. Remove browned andouille from pan onto a paper towel-lined plate to absorb grease. Remove excess oil from pan until about one tablespoon is left.

Cook shallot slowly in butter and excess andouille oil until it’s tender and translucent. Add white wine, black pepper, bay leaf and thyme. Simmer slowly for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove bay leaf. Add mussels to pan.

Cover and set over high heat. Be sure to shake pan often so that every shell opens up. Typically, shells should open after three to five minutes. Do not force shells to open; discard any shells that have not opened.

Ladle mussels with butter, herb and wine sauce into a bowl. Top with chives and serve with French bread.

tablespoons kosher salt tablespoons minced fresh rosemary leaves garlic cloves, minced cup Dijon mustard tablespoon balsamic vinegar racks of lamb, “frenched” (see note)

In bowl of a food processor fitted with a steel blade, process salt, rosemary and garlic until finely minced. Add mustard and balsamic vinegar, and process for 1 minute.

Place lamb in roasting or sheet pan with ribs curving down; coat tops with mustard mixture. Allow to stand for 1 hour at room temperature.

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Roast lamb 20 minutes for rare or 25 minutes for medium-rare. Remove from oven and cover with aluminum foil. Allow to sit for 15 minutes, then cut into individual ribs and serve.

Note: “Frenching” refers to scraping meat off the tips of the bones. Ask your butcher to leave ⅛ inch of fat on the meat.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In saucepan, heat up cream with thyme, garlic, nutmeg and some salt and pepper. While cream is heating up, butter an 8x12-inch casserole dish. Use a slotted spoon to remove the thyme.

Place a layer of potatoes on bottom of casserole dish and ladle part of cream mixture over the top. Dust Parmesan cheese over the potatoes. Season the mix with a little bit of salt and pepper. Continue layering potatoes, cream mixture, salt and pepper, and Parmesan cheese. Pour any remaining cream over the top, then top with Parmesan and fresh thyme leaves. Cover dish with aluminum foil, pulling back one corner for steam to escape. Bake 40 minutes.

Harissa Carrots with Yogurt Sauce 1 2 2

pound small carrots peeled and trimmed, halved tablespoons olive oil tablespoons honey Salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper and coat with cooking spray. Place carrots on sheet pan in a single layer.

In small bowl, mix together olive oil, honey, salt and pepper. Pour mixture over the carrots and toss to coat.

Mix ingredients together; cayenne is optional but will add heat if preferred. To take the recipe to another level, roast cumin and coriander seeds in a saucepan on the stovetop; then grind them in a coffee bean grinder reserved for spices. Adding freshly roasted and ground spices is a great way to elevate any recipe. If seeds of these spices are not available, powder form from the grocery store is fine as well. Sprinkle harissa blend on top of carrots.

Place carrots in oven and bake 25 to 35 minutes or until carrots are tender and brown. Roasting time may vary depending on size of carrots.

Yogurt Sauce: 1 ½ 1 1 ¼

cup plain yogurt teaspoon garlic, finely grated tablespoon lemon juice tablespoon extra virgin olive oil teaspoon salt

While carrots are roasting in oven, prepare Yogurt Sauce. Combine all ingredients well; set aside and let flavors blend for 15 to 20 minutes, if possible.

Place carrots on plate and top with yogurt sauce and ½ cup toasted pine nuts or pistachios.

Strawberry Shortcake Cake Cake: 2½ 3

cups cake flour teaspoons baking powder teaspoon salt cups granulated sugar cup vegetable or canola oil large eggs, room temperature large egg whites, room temperature teaspoons pure vanilla extract teaspoon almond extract cup sour cream cup milk, preferably whole or 2%

½ 1¾ ½ 2 2 2½ ½ 2/3 ¾

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In medium bowl, whisk flour, baking powder and salt until combined; set aside.

Using a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (preferred) or a hand mixer, beat sugar, oil, eggs, egg whites and extracts until combined. Add sour cream and beat until combined. Add half of the flour mixture, beating until just combined. While still beating, slowly add milk, then the remaining flour mixture. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl as needed. Be careful not to overmix it.

Line two 8-inch cake pans with parchment paper and grease the pans. Evenly divide batter between the two pans. Tap/gently drop the pans on the countertop a couple times to remove any air bubbles.

Bake 18 to 22 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If necessary, rotate pans once during bake time to ensure even browning. Place pans on a rack to cool completely.

Combine strawberries and jam and set aside; these will be used for the filling and topping.

Note: Slice strawberries for filling (about 2½ cups), and dice strawberries for the top of the cake (about ½ cup)

To assemble:

With hand mixer, whisk heavy cream until stiff peaks have formed. Add powdered sugar and vanilla extract; mix until fully incorporated.

Place one layer of cake on a platter. Top with half of frosting, then top with about 1½ cups of strawberries. For the top layer of cake, spread remaining whipped cream frosting, then place remaining strawberries in the center.

Decorate the outside with whole strawberries, if desired.

slices bacon pounds rump pot roast tablespoon olive oil sliced carrot sliced onion teaspoon salt teaspoon pepper tablespoons flour cups full-bodied red wine, such as Chianti or Bordeaux

2-3 cups beef stock 1 tablespoon tomato paste 2 garlic cloves, mashed ½ teaspoon fresh thyme 1 bay leaf 1 pound cremini mushrooms, sliced

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. In Dutch oven pan, sauté bacon over moderate heat 2 to 3 minutes until lightly brown. Remove from pan with a slotted spoon and set aside.

Dry beef with a paper towel; if it is damp then it will not brown well. Add olive oil to bacon fat in saucepan. Sauté beef a few pieces at a time. Set aside with bacon.

Add carrots and onions to pan and sauté until they are tender and nicely browned. Return bacon and beef back to Dutch oven and sprinkle with salt and pepper, making sure to evenly coat. Stir in flour and coat the meat. Place pan in oven for 4 minutes.

Remove and toss meat with carrots and onions; return to oven for another 4 minutes. This will brown the flour and give the meat a light crust. Turn oven down to 325 degrees.

Stir in wine and beef stock so that the meat is barely covered. Add tomato paste, garlic, thyme and bay leaf.

Bring to a simmer on stovetop, then cover Dutch oven and place in preheated oven for 2½ to 3 hours. The meat is ready when fork tender. A slow-cooker could be used for this step as well; the contents of the Dutch oven would just be transferred to your slow-cooker and placed on high for 2½ to 3 hours instead of using the stove.

While meat is cooking, slice button mushrooms and place them in a saucepan with a tablespoon of butter. Serve in the Dutch oven or arrange the stew on a platter with potatoes, noodles or rice, and top with buttered mushrooms and fresh thyme.

Cream butter and sugar in a stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment on medium-high speed until smooth, about 2 minutes. Reduce speed to low and add eggs one at a time, mixing after each addition until fully incorporated. Add vanilla and almond extract, then slowly mix in flour and salt until well combined, scraping down sides of the bowl as needed. Remove the dough, press into a flat rectangle, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour and up to overnight.

Position oven racks in top and bottom thirds of oven and preheat to 350 degrees. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Cut dough into thirds, wrap one piece back in plastic wrap and return it to refrigerator.

Dust work surface and remaining 2 pieces of dough well with flour and roll out each to 3/16 inch with a rolling pin, moving the dough and dusting the top and bottom with additional flour if it becomes sticky. Cut out as many large hearts as possible with a 4-inch heart cookie cutter and place on prepared baking sheets.

Gather scraps and reroll once to cut out more cookies. You should have a total of 12 hearts.

Cut a small heart out of the middle of each large heart with a 2-inch heart cookie cutter and reserve for other use. (Chill and bake the small hearts separately or freeze for later.) Refrigerate baking sheets with cookies until dough is firm, 15 to 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, separate candy by color and place each color in a separate resealable plastic bag. Place a kitchen towel over bags and crush candy into small pieces using a rolling pin or meat mallet; do not pulverize. Fill cut-out areas of cookies two-thirds full with crushed candy.

Bake cookies, rotating baking sheets from top to bottom and front to back halfway through, until light golden brown and candy has melted, 12 to 15 minutes. Cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Repeat rolling, cutting, filling and baking process with remaining piece of dough. NCM

The Great-Hearted Physician

I

t would seem like an easy task for most people to choose a “Great Heart” in their lives. I, however, have been blessed to have a great number of great hearts in my life.

There are many people I could choose as my own Great Heart – from family and friends to those I work with and for: • My family and friends who accepted me back with no questions asked, many years ago when I returned, prodigally, from my “lost weekend.”

• My many coworkers who taught me, through their actions, to have a servant’s heart.

• The guy who taught me Isaiah 6:8. He told me about the verse, but as with any Bible verse, if it’s just words, they mean nothing. I could see how this guy lived it, though, and that made me want to live it. That verse has had a tremendous effect on my life.

• The sheriff himself, who drove to my house to personally comfort my family when my father died suddenly in 2020.

I feel like I’d be doing a disservice to many if I singled one person out as the Great Heart in my life when my life is filled with great hearts. So, I’m taking the easy way out and choosing a Heart greater than all. And I am choosing something He said that has been in my heart since I first read His words in red: “It is not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to receptance.”

I’ve used this verse many times over the years to tell people that Jesus would hang with me.

While I can’t imagine there is any greater honor than that, I must also acknowledge that, in that scenario, I am the sick guy.

And if we are equating righteousness with good health, I suppose I’m about as sick as a man can be.

I know I’m sick. I know that the blessings I have in this life, and the hope for my eternal life, are not anything I can earn. There is no amount of exercise I can do or vitamins I can take that would make me healthy.

There are no home remedies or apothecary practices that will cure what ails me. I don’t need A doctor; I have The Doctor. He said it in His own words.

In the scenario above, I hope that we all come to realize how sick we truly are. We can walk around looking healthy and talking healthy, but “healthy” people don’t seek out doctors.

My diagnosis: Go into the clinic, write your name on the patient list, Southern-born and and know that the Doctor is in.
