Army Spc. and Northgate grad Christian Hand returns to Newnan following dangerous mission in Iraq

For 32 precious days, Army Spc. Christian Hand will be able to relax and cher ish t i me w it h h is friends and family surrounded by the comforts of home in Newnan.

The city, with its abundant fall foliage and bustling businesses, is a far cry from the dusty, desert towns of Iraq - where Christian deployed for n i ne mont hs as pa r t of Operation In herent Resolve.

The 21-year-old North-

gate grad returned to his Army base in Fort Bragg, North Carolina in early October. Christian is a Specialist with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 325th Infantry Regiment White Falcons — a part of t he 8 2nd A i rbor ne Division.

Christian enlisted in the Army on his 17th birthday during his senior year of high school. His first day of boot camp was a cul-

ture shock, he said.

“I wa s rea l ly st upid and immature. I had long hair and they shaved my head,” Christian remembered with a smile. “I went in at 235 lbs and came out of boot camp at 155 lbs. I really wanted to challenge myself. I watched others who excelled. I was taught to be better than the person on your left and on your right. I learned how to better myself through knowledge, f itness and training.”

New bridge on Poplar opens; old bridge will be demolished

Just after 3 p.m. on Tuesday, traffic began flowing on the new bridge over Interstate 85 at Poplar Road.

With the shift to the new bridge, work can begin to demolish the old bridge to make way for another new bridge section. Once work is complete, there will be a four-lane bridge across the interstate to serve the new interchange being built there.

The entire section of Poplar Road between the Newnan Crossing Bypass and Newnan Crossing Boulevard was closed for a time Tuesday afternoon as preparations were made for the shift to the new bridge and newly paved lanes.

Work was ongoing to widen and pave a section of Poplar Road west of the Newnan Crossing Bypass, and singlelane closures were in effect Tuesday afternoon.

Construction on the interchange project began in the summer of 2016, and the new interchange is set to open in early 2019.

Extensive progress has been made in the past several weeks, and portions of the on- and off-ramps even had a layer of asphalt on Tuesday.

With the shift to the new bridge and new lanes, a concrete median now prevents access to the homes along Poplar Road. A gravel access road to

put to the test in February, when the White Falcons deployed to Iraq as a part of Operation Inherent Resolve. Their job was to support the Iraqi Federal Police and other counter-terrorism groups in clearing ISIS out of the country.

The first few weeks in a town near Mosul was another culture shock for Christian and his battalion as the troops adapted to the weather and customs of the villagers.

O perat ion I n herent Resolve was a dangerous mission, but that did not stop the soldiers from spending time with the Iraqi police, their families and residents, Christian stated.

“They would always serve us chai tea. If we

ca me off g ua rd, t hey wou ld feed u s . T hey would kill a chicken right there on the spot and cook us dinner. T hey were very hospitable,” C h r i s t i a n ex pl a i ne d .

“They’re also super creative. We brought a TV with us but couldn’t plug it in. An Iraqi man took a coat hanger, light bulb and random wires and got the TV to work. We were able to watch the Iraqi news and some of the soccer matches.”

The two groups cemented their friendship on the Fourth of July.

The Iraqi Federal Police gave the soldiers watermelons, cantaloupes and a cow, which was butchered and grilled as steak, Christian remembered.

“They said to us, ‘The United States helped us gain our independence, so we will celebrate their I n d e p e n d e n c e D a y,’ ” Christian said. “That was good to hear. They were excited and that made us feel good because we knew we were a part of a bigger picture …”

“We are beyond proud of him,” said Yolanda Hand, Christian’s mom.

“Christian is our f irst born and this has definitely been very challenging at times … his sister wore his dog tags while he was gone. His brother put an American flag on the back of his truck.

“His father and I love him and will continue to support him and all of his Army family,” she continued. “We can’t explain

how proud and honored we are to call him our son.”

In late October, Christian began more than a month of leave time and i m mediately headed home to see his family in Newnan.

The Army Specialist said he feels a sense of accomplishment looking back at the deployment and his military career.

“I’m a little bit wiser, m ore re s p e c t f u l a nd more thankful,” he stated.

“When I was 16 and 17 years old, I was a little punk. I thought I ran the world. But being in military and losing people during deployments really puts your life into perspective.”

Christian re-enlisted in the Army while in Iraq.

He will be moving to Fort Campbell, Kentucky in a few months.

The public schools also serve all students. In Coweta County, most of those students come from homes where Christianity in some form is at least nominally their religion.

But not all. The courts have generally found that schools should not – in their official capacity – teach students religious doctrine. I think part of the concept behind it is that a

parent should be able to send his child to school and not have to worry that an adult there will attempt to sway the child toward a different spiritual belief system.

That doesn’t mean religion is not alive and well in our schools.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes has a robust presence in Coweta County. The school system is again following the law in allowing Christian organizations for students to voluntarily join – just like the school has clubs for students with a wide range of interests.

Coweta Cou nt y a lso h a s a v ibra nt fa it h com mu n it y – with churches of all sizes and denominations. There are small churches that offer a close-knit fellowship and some very large churches with calendars of events for children and youth throughout the week.

I am proud of our young people for exercising their rights

and their faith. Sometimes we just have to let them step onto the public stage without an adult directing them.

One of the central characters is Keoki Kanakoa, a young Hawaiian royal who studies at Yale and aims to become a minister.

Over the course of the story, it becomes clear that the missionaries will never ordain Keoki, who eventually cuts his ties with the church.

The adults who are guiding Coweta’s young people – parents, pastors, youth group sponsors, FCA leaders – are clearly doing a good job. As the NHSECHS game proved, Coweta’s young Christians are ready to lead.

Considering the visionary investments to protect the Altamaha River corridor and the lessthan-vigorous effort to safeguard it from toxic coal-ash pollution, I think of the chain-gang boss. If he were observing what’s going on in Southeast Georgia, he’d say: “What we’ve got here is failure to see the irony.”

A nd not fa r from Broadhurst is the Satilla River watershed, which empties into St. Andrew Sou nd nea r Cu mberla nd Isla nd. Do you see the irony of making this mega-million-dollar investment and not doing everything we can to protect what goes on upstream?

It’s almost as if the left hand doesn’t care what the right hand is doing.

Weak laws and low tipping fees have allowed Georg ia to become a dumping ground for bordering states. Right now, as you read this, toxic coal ash is pouring into

Georgia from the Carolinas. The Jacksonville Electric Authority has already dumped 800,000 poisonous tons in Broadhurst. More could be on the way.

T hat ’s why t he left h a n d s — f r o m Wa y n e County to Atlanta and around the state—need to respect what the right hands are doing. United, those hands need to work for stronger environmental laws. Otherwise, despite the Sansavillatype successes, it’ll be: “What we’ve got here is failure to see the irony.”

Times-Herald Xtra “Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night,” a holiday promenade. There are a couple of ways to take part. The first way is to go to unsilentnight.com/ participate and download one of the four musical pieces. You then prepare to play it in some way, either with a portable speaker for your phone or tablet, or go with the oldfashioned tape or CD in a boombox. The second way to participate is to bring a lantern to carry along with the musicians.

Participants will gather in the Greenville Street Park between 7:00–7:30 p.m. At 7:30, everyone will hit ‘play’ on their devices and then stroll up to the Court Square and around the downtown business district. At around 8:00, as the Courthouse chimes the hour, participants will begin to walk back to the park, where everyone will gather and wait for the music to reach its quiet finish.
