Newnan hires design company to create plan for recreational area
BY CLAY NEELY

The city has continued to show interest in turning city-owned property into a recreational park for kids and dogs. During the last City Council meeting, the council awarded a $47,142 contract to Robert and Company — an Atlantabased design firm — to begin the design work for Harper’s Farm Recreational Park. The proposed park, off Sprayberry Road on Julies Way, was purchased by the city years ago. In a previous meeting, Council Member Rhodes Shell said the area would be ideal based upon its location to the proposed LINC trail system. The company has partnered with the city on several existing parks, including Ray Park on Spring Street. Norma Haynes, a member of the Newnan Christmas Committee, also spoke to the council and expressed her gratitude for allowing the Christmas lights to be on display during the weekends in downtown Newnan. “Having them on during the weekend has brought great comments, and it’s truly alive at night,” she said. Haynes petitioned the council to look into having the remaining trees around the court square lit — making a total of 31 trees to have lights. “Riding through our town with all the trees lit would be an amazing sight,” she said. “Please consider it, and know we appreciate it.” In other business, the council: • Denied an application for an alcohol license to the Target Store on Bullsboro Drive after the applicant failed to appear before the council.

A tourism development team, organized by the Georgia Department of Economic Development, visited Coweta County for three days last week — looking at options for growing tourism. Ci ndy E id son of GDE cD wa s the team leader. She comes from a Coweta family and was once Newnan’s Main Street director. She said 44 tourism development team visits have taken place around the state and noted communities where teams have visited can apply for grants from the state. A tourism development team visit in neighboring Meriwether County was the precursor to grants that are helping to put butterfly gardens and murals in Meriwether’s towns. Eidson said a community meeting will be held somewhere in Coweta when the team’s written report is done. The team gathered Monday morning at the Newnan Centre where they

Recently , Keep Newnan Beautiful held the ribbon cutting ceremony for its pollinator garden, located at 14 Carmichael St. The event marks nearly a year since KNB first began work in September 2016 on transforming an empty lot
located behind the University of West Georgia’s Newnan campus into a landscape intended to promote and sustain natural wildlife. Recently, pollinator gardens have seen a growth in popularity because of the downturn in bee, butterfly, bird, and bat population. According to the National Pollinator Garden Network, these animals, known as pollinators, “are responsible for one out of three bites of food we
