Woman blames witchcraft for shooting, arson

By CLAY NEELY clay@newnan.com

A Coweta family escaped unharmed after a stranger from Decatur allegedly showed up at their back door and fired shots into the home before attempting to set it on fire. On the evening of Wednesday, June 7, Lindsey Deeanne Wells arrived at the residence of 90 Corn Crib Drive, mistaking it for the home of her cousin, investigators say. Inside the house, two children were home alone watching television, according to their mother, Jenny King. “They were both sitting on the couch when suddenly they saw this strange woman pacing back and forth on the back porch,” King said. “When the woman peered

through the window, the kids ran behind a wall. That’s when she began to shoot.” After allegedly firing two rounds from a .380 handgun into the residence, Wells then attempted to use lighter fluid to set the home on fire, according to Chief Deputy James Yarbrough with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office. The fire caused damage to the side of the home, but the flames ultimately fizzled out, according to investigators. King had attempted to call her children that evening, but received no response. As she was trying to get home, she received a call from a 911 operator, alerting her that a shooting had taken place at her residence. “(The operator) asked how far away from home I

was,” King recalled. “That was a long 15-minute ride home.” Wells reportedly fled the scene in her car and ended up at the Waffle House on 1363 South Highway 29 where employees noticed a woman acting strangely and called 911. Deputies arrived and were able to take Wells into custody without incident. Inside her car, investigators allegedly uncovered several bottles of lighter fluid and matches. Wells admitted to shooting at the house and setting it on fire, according to Yarbrough. When asked why, Wells allegedly told deputies she had been reading tarot cards, practicing witchcraft and went to the home to kill her cousin. However, Wells got the street names

mixed up and arrived at the wrong address in the Corn Crib neighborhood. The bullets allegedly hit the sofa where the two King children had been sitting before they ran behind the wall and called 911. “I’m just glad they got off that sofa,” King said. “The Lord was certainly watching over us.” Wells was taken to Piedmont Newnan Hospital before being cleared to be transported to the Coweta County Jail. Wells, 36, is now facing two charges of aggravated assault with a firearm and arson. She remains in jail after being denied bail by Magistrate Judge Robert Stokely following a June 8 hearing. **** Clay Neely: clay@ newnan.com, @clayneely

“A Bad Mom’s Christmas” (aka Bad Moms 2) is currently filming at Sky Zone in Newnan. Three days of f ilming will be held at the local trampoline park, according to Sky Zone’s Facebook page. Filming started Wednesday, and continues today and Friday. Other scenes have been f i l med a l l over Atlanta. T he sequel to l a st year’s surprise comedy hit “Bad Moms” follows the mothers from the first film as they spend Christmas with their own mothers. The movie is set for release later this year and stars Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn. Susan Sarandon, Christine Baranski (“The Good Wife,” “The Big Bang Theory”) and Cher yl Hi nes (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) play the moms of the “Bad Mom s .” Ju st i n H a r tley, Peter Gallagher and Wanda Sykes are also listed as cast members on the Internet Movie

Database. “This is a brand that has enormous goodwill all over the world, so expanding and extending the Bad Moms franc h i s e i n a n a ut h e n tic and irreverent way has been a priority for our team,” STX Motion Group Chairman Adam Fogelson told Variety last year. “Mila, Kristen and Kathryn are excited to re-team, and we will move forward with ‘A Bad Moms Christmas’ on a similar timetable and in much the same way in which we produced the original.” “A Bad Mom’s Christmas” is t he second major motion picture – with major stars – to film in Coweta in recent weeks. “The War with Grandpa,” starring Rober t DeNi ro, Ch r isto pher Walken, Jane Seymour and Cheech Marin f i lmed at t he former New n a n Hospita l on Hospital Road in early May. “The Walking Dead” has been based in Coweta since 2011 and is currently filming season eight.

Small improvements I’ve still got forever to go, but I’m getting a little better at being thankful. Thanking God for the big stuff is pretty easy to remember because the big things get your attention. Everybody I know who believes in God — and a few people who don’t — routinely remember to say “Thank you, Lord,” for good health, happy children, a smooth-running septic tank and for remembering to put on clean underwear before that car wreck. Most people are happy to see another sunrise and get the chance to do things a little better than they did the day before. I’m getting so good at being thankful I’ll even give a word of than ks when I get home without running into a deer. The

‘‘

ALEX MCRAE same doesn’t go for armadillos. Not yet. The other day I even remembered to thank God for saving me from a coffee-cooking disaster. I was trying to do too many things at once and getting nowhere. I f igured another cup of coffee would make me more productive. I have a Keurig coffee-

maker in my office. Not because the coffee is any better, but because it’s easier to toss the little K-cups than to dump a filter full of coffee grounds in the trash. When the recent slump struck, I decided to fire up the Keurig. Mine is a sma ll model that only cooks one cup at a time. You fill up the cup of coffee you’re going to use, dump the water into the machine, drop a K-cup in the slot and let ‘er rip.

I had found out the hard way that pouring from a coffee cup can get messy, so I started pouring from a measuring cup with a little spout on the end. That’s what I did the other day — f illed the measuring cup, poured the water into the machine and got things going. It takes about a minute for my Keurig to brew a cup of coffee. The process causes the machine to grunt, gurgle and wheeze like a busted bellows in a blacksmith shop. I don't like to be nearby when the Keurig is making noises, so I walked to my desk to waste a little time. I piddled a while and strolled back to the coffeemaker. Halfway there I realized I had forgotten to place the empty coffee cup under the Keurig.

My mind flashed back to t he last time I had pulled this stunt, leaving the Keurig free to disgorge a serving of hot java all over my desk, papers and a coupon for a free Chick-fil–A sandwich. When I thought it was happening again my pulse raced and my blood pressure soared. Visions of chaos f illed my mind. Then I looked down and saw a miracle. I hadn’t stuck a coffee cup under the Keurig, but I had placed the measuring cup there. I didn’t even remember doing it. That measuring cup had filled right up with no drips, no mess, no problems. Before I drank that coffee, I thanked God for saving an idiot like me from myself. Then I whipped out my smartphone and

took a picture. T h e pi c t u r e of t h e Keurig squatting over the coffee-filled measuring cup is on my computer desktop. I can’t think of a better reminder of the small blessings God sends us every day that we often overlook. Sometimes, we even get blessings we don’t deserve. Be thankful for them. T hat doesn’t mea n t h i ngs w i l l a lways be perfect. The day after I celebrated the Blessing of the Keurig, I saw an armadillo. He’s lucky he jumped into the ditch before my car got there. Kate Mara strived to get it right as Marine, dog lover

NEW YORK (AP) — One of the best things for Kate Mara about starring in “Megan Leavey” was Varco the dog. Varco is the Rex to Mara’s Leavey in the true story of a young Marine corporal and her fight to bring her combat dog home after service in Iraq. “He and I trained together, so by the time we started shooting we were very comfortable with each other,” Mara told The Associated Press in a recent interview. “I loved working with a dog. They’re unexpected and constantly doing things that you’re not expecting

them to do. If you want them to just sort of sit there during a scene they will, but then they’ll do some genius little movement or sound or whatever that will make the scene that much better.” Mara, an animal activist who has worked with both Oceana and the Humane Society, also had the rare treat of being directed by a woman, Gabriela Cowperthwaite. She had also directed the orca-abuse film “Blackfish.” In fact, Mara said, her animal advocacy blossomed due to the SeaWorld film. “Animals really do

teach us empathy and compassion and so many other things,” she said. It’s that bond between a lost human, Leavey, and a scarred bomb-sniffing dog, Rex, that plays out for Mara. “I instantly felt connected to it for that reason,” she said of the film. She found it refreshing to work with a woman at the helm as well. “I’ve been acting since I was 14 and I would say in the past three years I’ve worked with more females than I ever have in my entire career, and that’s directors but also actors,” Mara said. “And

we had so many females on our crew as well, so I definitely think that’s changing. I think it’s slower than we’d all like but it makes me so happy that something like ‘Wonder Woman’ is actually proving that fact. It’ll make it easier and easier to make more and more films.” Mara’s not interested in directing, but she has started her own production company. “I love directors so much and I like it when they tell me what to do,” she said. As for dogs, she has two of her own, both Boston terriers. At 14

and 15, she said, “They’re doing really well.” Mara recently got engaged to “Billy Elliot” actor Jamie Bell, but she was tightlipped about her nuptials. “I’m definitely not very girlie about it all. I’m just, like, I’ll show up. My fiance is much more specific and much more opinionated than I am so it’s nice. I just sort of let him do it.” One of the wedding challenges: She’s vegan and Bell’s not, “so you’ve got to make everybody happy.” The film, which opened Friday, covers raw territory for veterans

coping at home with post-combat trauma. Mara wanted to get it right, leaning on her previous role as the wife of a vet in the 2015 release “Man Down.” “That movie is what really made me want to find some sort of a female Marine story,” she said. “We want Marines and families of soldiers to be able to watch the film and not just think ‘oh yeah, the war stuff looks real but how about when you go home?’ We wanted that to feel as authentic.”

New Google project digitizes world’s top fashion archives NEW YORK (AP) — Anyone who has waited on a long, snaking line to get into a fashion exhibit at a top museum knows just how popular they’ve b e come — a nd more broadly, how fashion is increasingly seen as a form of artistic and cultural expression. Google Inc. is acknowledging this reality by ex pa ndi ng its Google Art Project — launched in 2011 to link users with art collections around the world, online — to include fashion. T he ne w i n it i at ive , “We Wea r Culture,”

which launched Thursday, uses Google’s technology to connect fashion lovers to collections and exhibits at museums and other institutions, giving them the ability to not only view a garment, but to zoom in on the hem of a dress, examine a sleeve or a bit of embroidery on a gown up close, wander around an atelier, or sit down with Metropolitan Museum of Art costume restorers. You can click your way to, for example, a curated photo exhibit on Tokyo Street Style, or an exploration of women’s gowns in the 18th century. BUBBA SAYS

At a preview demonstration this week, Amit Sood, di rector of t he Google Cultural Institute and designer of the Google Art Project (now ca lled Google A rts & Culture) explained that he wasn’t initially clued into the possibilities for fashion, because at the tech giant, “we all wear hoodies.” But, he said, collaborating with an institution like the Met showed him that “art and fashion have a long history together.” The idea behind the new project, he said, is to tell the story — or rather, the

multiple stories — behind fashion. T here a re severa l v i r t u a l re a l it y f i l m s included in the project. A 360-degree video displays the Met’s conservation studio, with conservators explaining how they keep delicate clothing strong enough for display — one of them explaining, for example, how the team uses nee-

dles designed for eye surgeons. It is the ultimate fragility of clothes, though, that makes the project appeali ng to museu m c u rators, explained Andrew B olton , t he Co st u me Institute’s head curator — whereas many garments are too delicate to be permanently displayed, digitizing a collection makes it viewable forever.
