ith less than three months to go before the event we have a lot to tell you about. Not least the further expansion of Timber Expo.

You can read more overleaf but on the afternoon prior to Timber Expo (24 Sept) we have a very exciting development that will bring together a wide spectrum of timber industry leaders and personalities under the brand of ProTimber. The finer details are being ironed out as we go to press but the hope is that the timber industry will support this on many levels. Two special pieces of research are also being commissioned that will be unveiled, dissected and discussed, with the floor open to some serious and passionate debate.

4

ProTimber 2012 – the day before the exhibition halls open for business, Timber Expo will host a high level, pan-industry summit.

10

Seminar Programme – plan your sessions in advance to make the most of your time across two busy days.

12

Major Sponsor Profiles – read more about our latest front line sponsors and what they will be presenting at this year’s show.

30

Vox Pops – timber talk from out latest crop of industry personalities.

38

Timber Buyers Forum – meeting slots are now filling up fast. TBF is bigger, busier and ready to facilitate more meetings than ever before.

42

Timber Trends – industry news and story snapshots of what has been happening across the timber world recently.

60

Visitor Essentials – everything you need to know about getting to Timber Expo and what you need to remember while you are there.

62

Timber Trades Benevolent Fund – this year we have a chosen charity that we hope everyone will support generously.

We also have the Timber Talk seminar programme confirmed, so please take some time to plan what you will be seeing and hearing over two increasingly hectic days. We have also built into the programme presentations from selected shortlisted projects from the Wood Awards 2012, which are certain to prove popular. As well as all the talk inside the seminar theatres, the structures themselves are sure to be huge talking points. The creators of the seminar theatres talked me though how these will showcase timber as a building material and display how a complex supply chain can mesh together to create superb energy efficient buildings. The results will be stunning and alongside some other structural feature elements we have up our sleeve, there will be plenty to spark your imagination as you walk round the Jaguar Halls. Our regular features return, including our Vox Pops column, a quick round-up of some recent news you may have missed plus a bumper crop of new sponsor and exhibitor profiles. See you all in September. Enjoy the read… Gary Ramsay Editor Expozine e: gary.ramsay@timber-expo.co.uk

Timber Industry Summit

2012

ProTimber

A new dimension has been added to Timber Expo with the launch of ProTimber 2012. This will be the first of an annual gathering of timber industry leaders on the eve of the exhibition halls opening for business. Andrew Carpenter, Chief Executive, UKTFA “The time is now for all corners of the timber sector to collaborate and demonstrate to the construction community that this industry is serious about providing cost effective, value engineered sustainable solutions to meet both the economic and sustainability challenges in today's market. It is only through this collaborative approach that we will be able to clearly communicate that timber engineering is the only viable solutions to achieve zero carbon construction – and we will achieve this by total supply chain integration. Collectively we must understand the end user client’s needs and deliver these through our combined products and services. The need for One Vision and One Voice is now!”

4

This special half day event on the 24 September 2012 is designed to bring together a cross-section of individuals from all corners of the timber industry to discuss current trends in the sector and inspire everyone on a future path ahead for the timber and wood products sector. ProTimber is expected to host 250 attendees to discuss five key topics alongside a presentation of the results of two studies into current trends in the UK construction industry that is being commissioned by TRADA and Timber Expo.

The Market Amongst a range of core areas, the research study will focus on: • Who influences specification and how • Changes in behaviour in specifying and buying • New trends such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) • How is timber perceived by the marketplace? Competitor Materials This will focus primarily on the steel and concrete sectors. Points for discussion will include: • Key messages and goals • Key threats, opportunities and actions they are taking to address • Other key activities: events, advertising and information material • How do the above compare with timber?

This research will include an insight into the construction sector and activities of other sectors including steel and concrete and how timber is stacking up in comparison. “We hope the summit will provide some thought-provoking discussion in a serious and informed manner. It will add an important dimension to the show,” says TRADA Marketing & Membership Manager Rupert Scott. “Getting the UK timber industry’s growth strategy right is very appropriate alongside its leading exhibition.”

Summing up and closing remarks

Get Involved Chaired by a professional facilitator, this invitation only forum will represent different parts of the timber supply chain. The aim is a to have a lively informed debate in a structured manner. This will be an arena to flush out individual and company opinions, tease out detail from the research and also air any legitimate objections. All areas of the industry are expected to participate from clients and contractors to project managers, quantity surveyors, merchants and product developers. Some of the reasons why timber is successful can be developed further but it is important to also gain some clarity on why timber is still not the material of choice for many parts of the construction world.

“With the industry coming together at Timber Expo we have a great opportunity to discuss and shape the future direction of our whole supply chain. With industry bodies now working ever closer together, meaningful, at-thecoal-face input from senior business people will augment and refine the positive steps, such as the Wood First campaign, that are being taken to grow the use of wood.”

Industry Partners Not only will the summit be a high level staging post for the industry, it will be an excellent networking event with other senior leaders. It is FREE to attend but you must be pre-registered and if you wish to attend you should make contact with your relevant trade association. All key timber industry trade associations will be approached and already fully engaged are the TTF, UKTFA, TRADA, UKSIPs, BWF, BMF, CIOB, CIAT and IOM3. BUILT FOR SUCCESS The TRADA stand at Timber Expo 2012 is designed to inspire. As a key partner in the timber trade's leading exhibition, TRADA is keen to make its mark – and what better way than an eye-catching stand made from timber?

“What TRADA is seeking to do, through Timber Expo, is to fire the imagination, and to show what is possible in timber.” TRADA Membership & Marketing Manager Rupert Scott.

A team of engineers at Ramboll Computational Design (RCD) is hard at work creating a plywood sculpture inspired by a timber gridshell sculpture which spreads like a tree across the foyer of Ramboll UK’s London office. Engineers at RCD are now at the testing stages, checking the connections and joins of the sculpture and ensuring that it fits together smoothly. Having optimised the form for self-weight and gravity, the engineering and design team are actually investigating the effect of accidental horizontal loads from impacts from conference attendees. “We are looking at ways in which to tweak the geometry and make it more resistant to these loads,” said Harri Lewis, Design Engineer, Buildings and Design, Ramboll. These include folding the structure in the style of origami to effectively give the structure more depth. Another option is edge panels that curve along each arch boundary. Mr Lewis said these will significantly improve the buckling resistance while also providing a neat border capable of supporting a strip of LED lights.

Choosing plywood for the structure offers several advantages. It is very economical, due to new techniques in digital fabrication allowing the design and production of bespoke parts at very low cost, relative to other materials. James Latham is supplying 25 birch plywood panels to build the gridshell, while Lonza Wood Protection is providing a proven fire retardant protection through its DRICON impregnation treatment. Equally important, timber has ‘a little bit of play in it’ which more brittle materials would lack. The forces are distributed evenly so there are no weak spots. He added, ‘The sculpture was designed for ease of fabrication, but without compromise on structural performance. This made it conceptually different to the current trend of architectural free-form surface modeling, where the concept design often has to be modified to make it practical to realise.’ “What TRADA is seeking to do, through Timber Expo, is to fire the imagination, and to show what is possible in timber,” said TRADA Membership & Marketing Manager Rupert Scott. “We want to create a structure for our own stand which is exciting both in form and in function and we are confident that Ramboll will meet and exceed this brief.” In addition to the Pavilion, TRADA will also be hosting its popular series of TRADA tours for Timber Frame and Fire, covering all relevant technologies at the exhibition which offer fire protection solutions. All TRADA tours will depart from the TRADA stand.

ENTER THE HELIX Our desire is to demonstrate the inherent strength and structural load-bearing characteristics of SIPS

The continuing success and growth of the Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) across the construction marketplace cannot be understated. Charles Stewart, Chairman of the UK SIP Association and MD of leading SIP provider SIPS Industries, explained to Timber Expo the ethos behind the development of the UKSIPS Seminar Theatre as a system showcase. The UKSIPS theatre will be hard to miss. Its creative structure will be one of the highlights of the show and the name comes from the view from above. The sculpted roof panels form the shape of a helix and although it is purely an aesthetic aspect of the structure, it is designed to demonstrate that intricate shapes and overhangs can be achieved using SIPS technology. “We have adopted a minimalist approach to the design of the theatre, says Charles. “ Our desire is to demonstrate the inherent strength and structural load-bearing characteristics of SIPS. The 60sqm footprint has only one structural beam – the ridge beam that runs down the centreline of the roof structure. There are no posts, joists or stiffeners within the structure and this goes to show how the ‘monocoque’ stressed skin composite panel technology works in practice.” The Helix structure will be constructed using standard dimension SIP wall panels but the roof uses a ‘jumbo’ SIP that spans 4.8m unsupported from ridge to eaves. A range of insulation core thicknesses will be used to demonstrate how a SIP panel can be readily increased in thickness to achieve both structural and thermal requirements. The Helix building is also all about efficiency – structural efficiency, space efficiency, thermal efficiency and ultimately energy efficiency. It will embrace and demonstrate ‘fabric first’ principles and ensure that visitors to Timber Expo and delegates to the Timber Talk seminars

8

will leave with a thorough understanding of SIP technology capabilities and knowledge of SIP detailing. “The theatre will be stripped back to its raw state,” adds Charles. “But other UK SIP Association members such as Knauf Drywall will be applying some external cladding details and internal lining to the building. Windows will be fitted to show the details at the junctions and to demonstrate airtightness taping at these points.” The Helix building will take less than four hours to erect – from blank exhibition floor to handing over to the show organisers. This is one of the major benefits of keeping the structure simple but interesting. After the show, 100% of the Helix building will be recycled, and with all the wall panels of standard dimensions, the roof panels will be trimmed and reused in live projects. For Charles Stewart, Timber Expo is a vital platform for the promotion and understanding of SIPS technology. “The event allows us to bring clients, architects, engineers and specifiers ‘up close’ to SIPS technology. SIPS technology is very simple but very efficient. It is often seen to be shrouded in mystery and as such is seen as being complex. Complex often means difficult to work with but here we can really unpick some of the SIPS myths and be certain that many of the visitors will go away with much more knowledge and confidence about using a SIPS solution on future projects. There will be a range of SIPS case studies within the Helix building over the two days of the show so there will be plenty of opportunities for visitors to get to grips with what SIPS offer. At this year’s Timber Expo, International Timber is focusing on giving customers a more interactive experience. Although the stand will still be packed full of useful information and manned by experts from across the business, it will also host a few surprises. “This year we have focused on making the visitor experience more enjoyable,” says Managing Director, Tony Miles. “Along with displaying a large selection of our product range including the latest addition Accoya® Face Laminated Component, we are also introducing a couple of new elements to the stand which are sure to get visitors talking.”

TIMBER INGENUITY We all love timber, that’s why we work in the timber industry. Its versatility and ability to create a warm finish makes it one of the most appealing materials available to the construction industry. However, in the past it had fallen out of favour for elements such as windows and doors, being pushed to the back by uPVC, which was perceived as being more durable and easier to maintain, but this is no longer the case. Wooden frames are making a comeback thanks to modified timber. At this year’s Timber Expo, International Timber will be displaying the latest addition to its product range – Accoya® Face Laminated Components. This exciting new addition to the UK window and door market allows architects and specifiers to create an elegant finish without compromising on performance and at a competitive price. Available exclusively through International Timber, Face Laminated Component has gone through stringent delamination and dimensional stability tests at the primary German window and facade institute, ift Rossenheim. This testing pushed the component to its limits by exposing it to both extreme moisture and heat and it successfully passed all tests.

12

The component is formed from Accoya® wood, laminated to the external weather face of the engineered Redwood components. This ensures the window frame or door has a contemporary, smooth finish with the ability to withstand the elements and has Class 1 durability on the external face. Due to the modification technique undertaken, the thermal conductivity is also 30% better than hardwood, which is of course another reason why modified timber windows and doors should be a serious consideration when renovating or specifying a new build. “Timber Expo is a good opportunity to meet customers, discuss upcoming projects and advise them on the best timber for the job,” adds Tony. “As well as any legislative issues they may need to be aware of in a relaxed, informal environment and we look forward to seeing old and new customers there in September.” For more information visit: www.internationaltimber.com, follow us on twitter @Intltimber or phone: 0161 848 2906

Pasquill, the largest supplier of trussed rafters in the UK will use Timber Expo 2012 to showcase its broad range of innovative timber solutions for roofs and floors. Visitors to the stand will be able to see Pasquill’s engineered timber options, including roof trusses, panelised roof systems, glulam, I-Joists and Posi-joistsTM. The latter will demonstrate just how easily services can be installed and accessed by means of their open web configuration.

More news from Pasquill is the company’s success in achieving CE Mark certification for Trusses and Posi-JoistsTM manufactured at all of its branches around the UK. Pasquill is the first national manufacturer of its kind to have achieved the certification.

Pasquill is one of the only UK companies able to manufacture a full range of panelised roof solutions, thus ensuring that the bespoke solution created meets clients’ requirements exactly and also complies with the increased need for energy conservation. Pasquill has also developed Safespan in conjunction with a major UK housebuilder, using standard timber engineered components in an improved and safer construction process.

Pasquill has recently invested in its design service, honing an already industryleading process, and aligning it more closely than ever with the production side of its business to create a more streamlined approach.

The company is committed to promoting modern methods of construction through research and development, evolving solutions in design and manufacturing excellence. Pasquill has recently invested in its design service, honing an already industry-leading process, and aligning it more closely than ever with the production side of its business to create a more streamlined approach. The difference between a truly first-rate design service and a ‘me-too’ offering can mean significant cost-savings for customers. And in today’s increasingly competitive market this can have such a big impact on their margins. Working closely with architects and builders, Pasquill can come up with intelligent design solutions that not only fulfil requirements, but which shave off cost where possible in ways they may not have otherwise considered. Visitors to the show will be able to talk to Pasquill staff about the design solutions it offers.

Visitors to the stand will also be able to take part in an interactive Pasquill/International Timber Challenge. For more information visit: www.pasquill.co.uk

THE VIEW FROM THE TOP Highly visible across the Timber Expo skyline will be the Frame Wise seminar theatre. Designed and built to be a showcase for advanced timber frame, it will be one of the key gathering grounds for everyone at this year’s show.

“I think what people want is detail and hard information. Visitors want to come away with something that they don’t know or weren’t aware of previously. That is one of our key aims.” Simon Orrells Managing Director.

Not only will the structure be a talking point for the timber technology on show, but it will be the venue for the Home Builder’s Federation’s (HBF), House Builder Forum - a key networking opportunity on the first floor of the house, that will be a major draw for all attendees. For Managing Director, Simon Orrells, the two days of Timber Expo are going to be very exciting. “The theatre construction is going to be a showcase for timber systems,” says Simon. “You will see a full range of panel systems including our new ‘Wise Wall’ series that we developed last autumn. There will also be glulam framework on the ground floor, cross laminated timber (CLT) for partitions, raised tie roof trusses plus various types of non-combustible wall panels. What we are trying to demonstrate is how well the industry can work together and come up with ‘Smart Timber Solutions’.” The ground floor will host the seminar theatre and via an external staircase will access the first floor which will host the HBF sessions and other demonstrations This will include a sunken balcony area that will act as a media area for people to catch a bird’s eye view of the show and which can also be used for meetings or as an interview area. The single-storey section will be made especially for the show but after Timber Expo, the twostorey section will go back out into a live project. For ease of viewing, Frame Wise will be turning part of the theatre ‘inside out’. As you walk around the gable end of the two-storey section, there will be the external staircase and the wall including the windows and doors will be flipped, so from the inside it looks like an external wall and from the outside you will see the various products in situ. Here Simon believes the building tours will deliver more impact. “I think what

14

people want is detail and hard information. Visitors want to come away with something that they don’t know or weren’t aware of previously. That is one of our key aims.” TV screens on one of the external walls will run a time lapse film of the seminar theatre structure being erected from blank exhibition floor to finished completed building. This will also include case study projects and material from several of Frame Wise’s supply sponsors including: Boise, Superglass, Cellecta and Simpson Strong Tie plus others. “It’s a fantastic story,” says Simon. “With the theatre, we can give everyone an insight into the Frame Wise and why timber should be the material of choice. Basically, if visitors don’t know how successful timber frame can be after being in our seminar theatre for two days there is no hope.”

Code 4 Cost Neutral On 26 Sept a debate will be taking place in the ground floor presentation area on the long term cost of timber frame versus overall value. An area where there is still confusion across the construction industry. Simon explains: “As an industry we’re obsessed with cost and see value in very little. However, there are a number of driving forces that now put value right at the heart of the cost debate such as recession, climate change, squeezed margins and better build quality. This is exactly where timber frame has the edge over other forms of construction. In this session we will share insights and opinions on why timber is the only future-proof, costproof option.”

AN IDEAL PLATFORM Malcolm Thomson Operations Director for Deeside Timberframe took some time out of his busy schedule for a quick Q&A with Gary Ramsay about plans for Seminar Theatre 3 and the collaboration with James Jones & Sons. Q: Can you outline the structure and some of the technical aspects of the theatre design? The structure is mainly single storey but does incorporate the James Jones IntelliRoof system over one end of the theatre. The roof system will include a Velux Cabrio balcony window and there will be a JJI-Joist cassette floor panel to complete the room in the roof design. The wall panels will be made up of JJI, metal web and space studs (220mm deep) ranging in height from 2.4 up to 3.6m high clad with 9mm OSB sheathing with the walls sloping up from the main entrance towards the room in the roof section. The curved roof over the main entrance area will be formed in loose engineered joist rafters supported on 2 curved glulam beams, 300mm deep, which are in turn supported by glulam support posts. Q: What are you hoping to demonstrate about timber frame as a construction method with the theatre itself? We want to showcase the flexibility and adaptability of the timber components developed and manufactured by both companies, demonstrating that timber can be used in almost any kind of structure, bringing significant health and safety, programme, cost and environmental benefits to the table. Q: How long will it take to erect? We would envisage the structure being erected in 1.5 to 2 days including the installation of the marketing material. Q: Will the components be reused or recycled on deconstruction? The components will be recycled and some of them are already being re-used from previous shows. Q: How useful do you see Timber Expo to the development of your businesses and timber as a construction method and material? Timber Expo is an ideal platform to reach the specifiers – architects, engineers and surveyors. The concentration of purely timber related products should emphasise all of the benefits mentioned above.

Deeside Timberframe Deeside Timberframe designs, manufacturers, delivers and installs framing systems for commercial developers, local authorities, regional and national builders, social housing and the private self-build market. news

As the weeks and months tick by, we are fast approaching Timber Expo 2012. The wonderful thing is that following the success of 2011 I can almost feel an air of excitement being generated for this year’s event. With another great show on the horizon Timber Expo is now firmly one of the key dates on the construction calendar and after nothing for so long - doesn’t our industry deserve it? The exhibition element aims to provide a platform for the leading buyers to meet the timber industry to see exactly what fantastic businesses there are in the sector and what they can offer. There will be a huge range of current, innovative and exciting products and ideas on show, not to mention all the business networking opportunities throughout the event.

Meeting people to build business is what it’s all about. To help that even further, we are having a networking reception following the show on Tuesday evening (25 September) and I will be looking forward to seeing you all there. It will be a great opportunity to see some old faces and meet some new friends, contacts and potential clients. Equally it is a great chance for us to buy you a glass or two and thank you for your support – as they say at the Oscars, ‘we couldn’t do it without you!’ During the event, you can find me in the Sales/Press Lounge, so please come along if you want to discuss the 2013 event, or just to say hello! I look forward to seeing you all at Timber Expo 2012. Let’s make it a great show that our industry can be proud of.

Loretta Sales - Event Director

Meet the Speaker The Timber Talks programme is very full and concentrated this year with lots of high quality presentations and topic areas to dip into. And in our quest to always offer our visitors to the show a little extra, we are introducing an opportunity for visitors to come along and have some ‘face time’ with all those that have given presentations. Basically if you heard our speakers and liked what they had to say, you can come and meet them to discuss any questions you have in person. This year we will have a Speakers Lounge where all the speakers across the Timber Talks programme will be available after their sessions for informal discussions and interviews for around 30 minutes after their session. So even if you miss a particular session, you will still be able to catch up on developments in the Speakers Lounge on the main exhibition floor. Norbord, the UK’s leading producer of wood-based panel products, will present its three core products – Sterling OSB, Caberdek particleboard flooring and Caberwood MDF – at this year’s Timber Expo using a stand made entirely of its own products.

All of the products manufactured by Norbord make efficient use of sources of wood fibre that were once regarded as either waste or low-value by-product.

The focus of Norbord’s message at the show is the inherent sustainability of softwood products from managed forests. All of the products manufactured by Norbord make efficient use of sources of wood fibre that were once regarded as either waste or low-value by-product. Sterling OSB will provide the walls of the stand, while Caberdek boards (complete with their moisture-resistant protective film) will be used for the floor. Stand furniture is to be made from Caberwood MDF – a staple product for furniture and interior fit-out. Sterling OSB and Caberwood MDF are both made from forest thinnings – small diameter logs from young trees which are felled as part of sustainable forestry practice to allow space for larger trees to mature. All of this timber is harvested locally in Scotland which not only benefits the local economy but also reduces lorry miles to a minimum. Caberdek particleboard flooring is made from up to 80% recycled wood which would otherwise be sent to landfill or burned. Norbord’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact extend well beyond its choice of raw materials. Besides sourcing its wood locally, the company further reduces lorry movements by using a fleet of trucks with specially designed dual purpose bodies capable of delivering raw logs to the factory and delivering pallets of finished product to Norbord’s customers. A new initiative is removing 30,000 tonnes of logs from the road by switching deliveries from road to canal. This material, which used to be carried by up to 1,000

24

lorries using the A82 trunk road along the Great Glen, will now be brought by ship along the Caledonian Canal.

Another important environmental initiative is Norbord’s extensive use of biomass to provide heat energy for its production lines. Residues arising from the production process fuel biomass boilers at each of Norbord’s four European factories. Over the past decade, this has allowed Norbord to reduce its consumption of fossil fuels by over 75% and, today, the company is the UK’s largest generator of renewable heat energy. Among important new developments is the development of the Caberfix Pro fixing kit for installers of Caberdek flooring. Each kit includes everything needed to install 50sqm of floor and incorporates Norbord’s new Joint & Joist moisture proof adhesive. Also on display will be the new No-Squeak adhesive developed for builders in the refurbishment and maintenance sectors. This flexible gap-filling product is designed to accommodate movement in new floors and prevent the previously widespread problem of squeaky floors.

Senior Architectural Systems, one of the leading UK suppliers of window, door and curtain wall systems will be showcasing at Timber Expo its Hybrid range, encompassing a high-quality, highperformance composite timber and aluminium window system, complemented by a matching door and curtain wall range. Hybrid combines the advantage of the long life and low maintenance of aluminium externally with all the aesthetic and performance benefits of engineered timber internally. Hybrid’s aluminium profiles can be supplied fully powder coated using Senior’s in-house facility, one of the largest and technically most advanced in the country. The result is single source responsibility, minimal maintenance and maximum lifetime performance.

Product Range The Hybrid family comprises the Series 1 range of traditional composite windows and doors, the Series 2 contemporary collection of commercial slim-line windows and the Series 3 composite curtain wall system.

Thermal efficiency Hybrid windows offer the thermal efficiency of timber combined with the latest glass technology to produce U-values well below the current and anticipated future Building Regulation requirements.

Low maintenance Hybrid provides the advantage of fully pre-treated engineered timber internally, so any possibility of warping or twisting is eliminated. This, combined with the

benefits of powder coated aluminium windows externally, means maintenance is minimal.

Choice of appearance Hybrid windows feature either lacquered or painted timber internally. As the internal surfaces are fabricated from engineered timber, there is no requirement to paint as there are no knots to obscure. Externally, Hybrid offers a choice of finishes in polyester powder paint – virtually any RAL colour in either gloss, satin or matt. An anodised external finish is also available.

Lifecycle Hybrid offers minimal maintenance throughout its serviceable life and is 100% recyclable at the end of its life. All timber used in Senior’s Hybrid range of products is sourced only from PEFCcertified sustainable sources. The system is designed and manufactured within the UK, and is fabricated by an approved network of UK companies under a typical supply and fix subcontract. Designed and manufactured in the UK, Hybrid is fabricated by a network of UK companies which makes it an ideal solution for both newbuild and refurbishment projects where site measurement is required.

Hybrid combines the advantage of the long life and low maintenance of aluminium externally with all the aesthetic and performance benefits of engineered timber internally.

TIME TO TALK

TIMBER A fresh new panel of industry insiders tackle this issue’s timber talk. If you agree, disagree or would like to talk timber for the next issue get in touch. Q: With Hackney Council possibly the first local authority in the UK to adopt a planning policy promoting timber construction – is this a feasible route to take and can this be a blueprint for other public sector bodies to follow? Yes. Local planning authorities must have the power to set local standards where it makes sense to local communities and doesn’t affect the viability of development projects. And frankly, promoting greater use of timber makes much more environmental sense than promoting wind turbines. We support the Wood First initiative. Iain McIlwee Chief Executive British Woodworking Federation

Modern high quality timber products will perform very well in the retrofit/ refurb market.

Q: Compliance with Construction Products Regulation (CPR) Marking will be mandatory in 12 months time. How should everyone ensure that CE information is passed down the supply chain efficiently? We’ve been getting BWF members ready for CE Marking for years. CE Marking will be mandatory for all products with an adopted harmonised standard. Our guide to CE Marking walks members through the process and our tech team are on hand to deal with any questions that arise. If you know what you are doing, it shouldn’t be too complicated. Still worried? Just call us. Q: With the Government’s Green Deal due to launch in October, what opportunities are there for timber as part of the long term retrofit and refurbishment market? Modern high quality timber products will perform very well in the retrofit/refurb market, there should be potential particularly for timber windows and doors – but let’s not forget the significant opportunities in that market outside Green Deal funding. Green Deal is exciting, but it’s not the only show in town. Q: A client tells you they would not specify timber on a housing project as they have concerns over the material’s fire safety and durability – what do you say to them? This is where people often confuse a traditional industry with one that is not innovating. There have been significant advances in timber treatment in recent years. Fire doors are perhaps the finest example of how timber is used to prevent fire spread because of the excellent properties it displays. Our new stair scheme is certifying fire protected stairs for multi-occupancy dwellings. Our technical team are always happy to talk to the specifying community to set them straight and ensure they are comfortable specifying timber.

Q: With Hackney Council possibly the first local authority in the UK to adopt a planning policy promoting timber construction – is this a feasible route to take and can this be a blueprint for other public sector bodies to follow? Wood First is not only a feasible route – it is an important step forward. It is somewhat early to be referring to it as a blueprint, as the policy will need to be put to the test and more than likely a few lessons learned, but I am sure that with carbon reduction and sustainability being such hot issues, other public sector bodies are watching the Wood First policy very closely. Q: Compliance with Construction Products Regulation (CPR) Marking will be mandatory in 12 months time. How should everyone ensure that CE information is passed down the supply chain efficiently? The penalty for failure to comply means that your construction products would not be able to be sold legally anywhere in the UK or EU. Whatever the solution, it should be kept simple. Q: With the Government’s Green Deal due to launch in October, what opportunities are there for timber as part of the long term retrofit and refurbishment market? Timber frame construction provides attractive and necessary embodied carbon emissions performance – the reduction of which is a central rationale of the Green Deal. The difficulty comes from how the Green Deal is promoted by the government and how the timber industry takes advantage of this opportunity. Insulation is inevitably going to play a large part, and the benefits of wood as natural and breathable internal insulation need to be better understood.

Joanna Smith Marketing Manager UK and Continental Europe Coillte Panel Products

Wood First is not only a feasible route – it is an important step forward.

Q: A client tells you they would not specify timber on a housing project as they have concerns over the material’s fire safety and durability – what do you say to them? I’d ask them where they are getting their information from before tackling each point in turn and replacing myth and misconception with confirmed fact and reassurance. You’ll only need to do this once to create a lifetime convert to timber – it would be worth it.

Q: With Hackney Council possibly the first local authority in the UK to adopt a planning policy promoting timber construction – is this a feasible route to take and can this be a blueprint for other public sector bodies to follow? Yes this is the start and others will follow in putting timber as a ‘First Choice’ in construction. Q: Compliance with Construction Products Regulation (CPR) Marking will be mandatory in 12 months time. How should everyone ensure that CE information is passed down the supply chain efficiently? We need to raise the awareness to supply chain because July 2013 is not far away and I think the issue is people think the deadline will move so are not giving it the priority it needs and also understanding the requirement in relation to their business. Q: With the Government’s Green Deal due to launch in October, what opportunities are there for timber as part of the long term retrofit and refurbishment market? There will be a big need to improve the thermal performance of external walls, what better use than pre- insulated timber lining walls fitted internally of the external walls? Q: A client tells you they would not specify timber on a housing project as they have concerns over the material’s fire safety and durability – what do you say to them? Refer them to the UKTFA and review the work done on Site Safe & the ‘Design Guide to Separating Distances during Construction’ which enables timber frame to be built anytime, anyplace anywhere. You just need to follow the Guidance.

Q: With Hackney Council possibly the first local authority in the UK to adopt a planning policy promoting timber construction – is this a feasible route to take and can this be a blueprint for other public sector bodies to follow? Yes, it is a totally feasible route to take and one we hope all local authorities will see the benefit of. All public bodies have sustainability obligations which can be met in whole or in part through a greater use of timber in buildings. There is also huge time and cost savings to be made from using pre-engineered products manufactured offsite. The combination of greater David Hopkins Head of Communications and External Affairs Timber Trade Federation & Wood for Good

There is also huge time and cost savings to be made from using preengineered products manufactured offsite.

sustainability with improved time and cost performance should help convince most public bodies of the benefits of going Wood First. Q: Compliance with Construction Products Regulation (CPR) Marking will be mandatory in 12 months time. How should everyone ensure that CE information is passed down the supply chain efficiently? It will be compulsory to comply with the CPR and CE Mark products manufactured or arriving in the UK from 1 July 2013. A number of other responsibilities will be imposed on the supply chain, principally to ensure CE information is passed down the chain. In terms of product range, the CPR only applies to specific product groups intended for Construction which are covered by a Harmonised Standard such as constructional wood based panels, structural timber, solid wood panelling and cladding, flooring, roof trusses and glulam. Q: With the Government’s Green Deal due to launch in October, what opportunities are there for timber as part of the long term retrofit and refurbishment market? In simple terms, manufacturers and distributors of timber and timber-based products may have opportunities under the Green Deal. They can provide products into the market as normal and might notice that sales in certain products (e.g. thermally insulated materials such as fibreboard) increase as registered Green Deal installers buy them to feed into green deal products, and in turn may be used in retrofitting projects to comply with the new Part L Building Regulations. Installers will only be able to use Green Deal approved products, so timber products will only need to comply with the Green Deal code of practice in relation to product and system requirements. A good example of a product of this type will be a wall insulation system consisting of sheet panels on the face with insulation on the inside. Q: A client tells you they would not specify timber on a housing project as they have concerns over the material’s fire safety and durability – what do you say to them? There is much misconception about the ability of wood to perform under harsh conditions. However, the correct choice of product, good design and the help of technology mean that almost any end-use can now have a wood based solution. The use of timber and wood-based products can also help improve the fire safety of structures in many ways – wood based fire doors are a prime example, by helping to contain the problem and giving occupants the opportunity to escape. Other timber elements such as beams or joists will perform in a predicable way during a fire, which means the integrity of a building can be maintained for a known period of time. It’s worth pointing out that completed timber frame buildings that meet all current UK Building Regulations and standards are entirely safe from fire.

Q: With Hackney Council possibly the first local authority in the UK to adopt a planning policy promoting timber construction – is this a feasible route to take and can this be a blueprint for other public sector bodies to follow? Yes, if Hackney council adopt a policy then this may inspire other councils to follow suit. By emphasising the benefits of wood and the low cost advantages for planners to meet their low carbon agenda councils will have to start adopting new policies in the future. Q: Compliance with Construction Products Regulation (CPR) Marking will be mandatory in 12 months time. How should everyone ensure that CE information is passed down the supply chain efficiently? The whole supply chain must share the responsibility of CPR compliance. The manufacturer, importer and distributor all must take into consideration their roles to ensure they comply with the requirement. The industry bodies are also able to help provide information therefore an easy transition is achievable. Q: With the Government’s Green Deal due to launch in October, what opportunities are there for timber as part of the long term retrofit and refurbishment market? This should bring opportunities for timber and timber based products, but it is up to the timber industry to seek the opportunities. Also I believe it is up to manufacturers to come up with new products that can offer cost effective alternatives that meet the energy saving criteria. If the timber industry does not innovative then our competitors will.

Laura Ladd Marketing Manager UK & Europe Accsys Technologies

If the timber industry does not innovative then our competitors will.

Q: A client tells you they would not specify timber on a housing project as they have concerns over the material’s fire safety and durability – what do you say to them? Timber and timber based products are a good choice of material. A common sense approach needs to be executed when using timber on housing projects. Timber is most vulnerable when a housing development is under construction. Therefore site security is the most important factor.

THE VERDICT The move by Hackney Council is an ambitious and far-sighted one. Certainly the Wood First initiative is an achieveable route to low carbon, energy efficient buildings. The problem is that it will take some gutsy planners plus a lot of hard lobbying by the timber industry to make it commonplace. But with time and cost savings dear to any local authority’s heart as well as stricter sustainability targets, timber is in a perfect position to deliver. How big a deal the Green Deal will be is open for much debate. But with some conviction and the right system and product range, there will certainly be plenty of scope for timber to contribute to the Government’s flagship retrofit and refurbishment programme. Especially if you are supplying and installing timber windows, doors or certain wall insulation systems. But remember, installers will only be able to use Green Deal approved products. Expect the next 12-18 months to be dynamic ones in the retrofit world. Construction Products Regulation marking is a no brainer. Simply put – make sure you know your obligations for yourself and those up and down the supply chain. And if you don’t, there is plenty of advice out there from trade associations and their individual members. The issue of timber’s fire performance, durability and safety is always under scrutiny, mostly by the ill-informed, head-in-the-sand specialists or advocates of threatened alternative materials. The reply is an unassailable one – apply protective coatings, observe correct site safety and follow Building Regulations. Timber is as stable, reliable and predictable under flame as any other material on an architect’s wish list. HELPS YOU DO BUSINESS THE EASY WAY Don’t leave empty handed – join the Timber Buyers Forum

“I can say that the Timber Buyers event was a worthwhile exercise as it put us in touch with a number of suppliers that we may not otherwise have made contact with. The information we obtained was useful, and I will be passing this to the relevant parties within BAM. The meeting facilities were good, and were well organised.”

Charlie Law Bam Construct

After a highly successful first year, the Timber Buyers Forum will return in 2012 in a larger, fresh format to provide a simple, structured and highly effective way for buyers to meet with new and existing suppliers. This exclusive gathering ground is co-located within Timber Expo and takes place on 25 & 26 September 2012 at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry. What does the Forum do for me? We know that time is at a premium at any exhibition you visit. Too much work, too many people, a busy seminar schedule and not enough time to meet everyone you should. The result is you come away from the show having missed out on making significant contact with key people that could have a huge impact on the future of your business. The Timber Buyers Forum will be located at the heart of Timber Expo in the main exhibition space and is designed to be one of the truly exclusive parts of the show. The Forum team will organise a bespoke programme of handpicked supplier meetings, relevant seminars and networking events to help fulfil your immediate to longer term project needs. This is all tailored to you. With time a critical element, you can be more efficient in what you do across the two days and maximise the potential for creating and exploiting the best of business from Timber Expo. Engage at the highest level This focused approach has proved to be highly successful in creating new business relationships and facilitating meetings that allow you to get the most out of your time at Timber Expo.

38

All participants in the Forum have a strong desire to engage at the highest level possible with decision makers and individuals with direct influence. All of the Forum activities and meetings are matched to your needs, organised on your behalf and completely free of charge – all we ask for is that you give us a little of your time in return. Buyers participating in the Forum will be expected to meet with six exhibitors on each day that they agree to participate. These meetings will be scheduled and booked in advance and will be operated around a strict timetable. Sufficient time will be built in throughout the day for Buyers to visit the main exhibition and attend seminars. In the event that a Timber Buyers Forum participant cannot attend for the full day, or can only attend for part of the day, a reserve person will be required to attend in their place. This reserve person must also meet the qualifying criteria.

Qualifying criteria

The Buyer will select at least one day – either 25 or 26 September 2012 – in which to participate in the Forum. Buyers will need to complete a profile template with their professional information and details on specific projects and markets they working in, as well as new technologies or products they are looking for. Once the participation date is confirmed, the dedicated Timber Buyers Forum website will be updated with the buyer’s profile. Exhibitors to Timber Expo will have the opportunity to request meetings with individual buyers, which can be accepted or declined by the Buyers depending on interest levels. As a Buyer you will also have the chance to request one-to-one meetings with participating exhibitors of your choice. The Timber Buyers Forum team will then manage requests/invitations and meetings on your behalf.

To ensure that they are genuinely interested in taking part, and looking to satisfy a real business need, participants in the Timber Buyers Forum must meet a set of strict qualification criteria, The Forum is aimed at senior personnel with an influence over procurement decisions or specifications. Participating Buyers are expected to provide the following attributes:

The primary aim of the Forum is for exhibitors to access relevant buyers, and match suppliers wants with the Buyer’s preferences. Each appointment will be scheduled to last 30 minutes and appointments will appear in the individual online diary of both the Buyer and the exhibitor.

• Potential for future relationships with exhibitors • Live projects or a significant project pipeline • Genuine interest to learn about new products/technologies • Decision making authority or influence

In 2011 nearly 50 contractors and clients signed up to Timber Buyers Forum, amongst them were some of the biggest, most innovative and forward thinking businesses in the construction sector and feedback from these participants was exceptional with many wishing to return in 2012:

“I found the exhibition to be one of the very best that I have ever attended. The quality of the products on display was amazing and the willingness of exhibitors to engage in open and very frank discussions was very refreshing, I think this had a lot to do with the exhibition being very focused. The ‘meet the buyer’ sessions I hosted during the day were about right in number and made a good use of the day. The people that met with me were very knowledgeable and going forward we will engage with them again.”

This groundbreaking achievement in sustainable timber procurement has played a prominent role in helping the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) achieve its commitment of making the London 2012 Olympic Games the greenest games ever with 100% of wood products supplied certified as legal and sustainable.

World First for London 2012 and Timber As the countdown to this summer’s iconic sporting event continues, the entire London 2012 Olympic Park development has achieved dual Project Certification from PEFC and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) schemes for its timber usage — the first dual Project Certification in the world. This groundbreaking achievement in sustainable timber procurement has played a prominent role in helping the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) achieve its commitment of making the London 2012 Olympic Games the greenest games ever with 100% of wood products supplied certified as legal and sustainable. The development was audited by the Soil Association’s Woodmark and is being hailed as a major achievement that is potentially destined to be a future model for timber procurement globally. The scheme also saw a unique and important partnership role played by both PEFC and FSC to make sure that the levels of legal and sustainable timber procured by the ODA achieved the highest possible target. Woodmark said the project was a ‘world first’ for certification of such a huge and complex site.

Timber Expo and TRADA Boost Innovation with NEW TTJ Award Timber Expo and TRADA have teamed up to joint-sponsor the prestigious new Innovation Award at the 2012 TTJ Awards. As part of the core desire of both organisations to encourage innovation across all parts of the timber industry, Timber Expo and TRADA will be giving the winner and runners up of the competition, an exclusive opportunity to boost their profile at the UK’s only dedicated event for the timber industry and the built environment later this year.

The Games’ East London site comprises seven major venues across the 246hectare Olympic Park and needed to be managed on a daily basis for the thousands of timber products entering the site. The ambitious approach was driven forward by the establishment of the Timber Supplier Panel that embedded strict policy and procurement procedures and implemented a delivery management system that was forthright in policing and educating stakeholders and their supply chains about sustainable timber and unbroken chain of custody. Praising PEFC, FSC, the auditors, the timber industry, contractors and CLM (Olympic delivery partner) team managers for their efforts in achieving the target, Peter Bonfield, Head of Construction Products at the ODA added: “It is an outstanding outcome that really shows what can be achieved and it’s a strong platform for the industry to build on. Now the question is – what are the industry and certification bodies going to do to take that across the rest of the country.”

Wood 2.0: How High? In a remarkable 240-page report simply entitled Tall Wood, architect Michael Green makes the case for wood as the ideal building material for skyscrapers and their structures. Green argues that it is imperative that society builds tall buildings out of wood rather than less-sustainable, more-polluting materials, and he claims that wood is a sorely underrated building material that is capable of much more than is typically asked of it. His report sets out a blueprint for the design of wooden structures up to 30 storeys high, capable of performing in “high seismic areas” like his native

Vancouver. Unusual for the construction industry, he's shared the report under a Creative Commons license. Ars looked into the report in detail and spoke to Arup structural consultant and wooden buildings advocate Hans-Erik Blomgren for another perspective. Whether mass timber will make the leap required to become, as Blomgren hopes, a building material on equal footing with traditional materials used for medium and larger buildings remains to be seen.

Get Ready for Green Deal say TTF The Timber Trade Federation has issued a bulletin to explain the governmentsponsored Green Deal and how TTF members can use it to generate business opportunities. The scheme, due to launch in the autumn, is designed to enable Green Deal providers to offer energy efficiency improvements to homes and businesses to be paid for by loans. The TTF said its manufacturing and distributing members may see an increase in certain product sales, such as wood fibreboard insulation. "As the central rationale of the Green Deal is to reduce carbon emissions in the most cost-effective way, timber and timberbased products will offer opportunities to do this and increase the energy performance of buildings," it said. In addition to the general supply of materials

in compliance with the scheme's requirements, the TTF suggests partnership with a registered Green Deal installer to supply approved products. "A good example may be a wall insulation system consisting of sheet panels on the face with insulation on the inside." The TTF said although it was early days, now was the time for companies to begin to investigate the potential opportunities offered by the scheme. These orders come on the back of other contracts for housing, offices and even a hotel that SMTS has delivered to the Falklands in the past. Everything, from the timber frame system and prefabricated roof trusses to the kitchen units and worktops, is included in the shipment and ready to be constructed on site. Not only is the timber system designed to comply with existing Falkland Islands building regulations, it is also future-proofed to surpass the more

stringent insulation requirements proposed by the Islands’ Building Control. Gary Yeoman, SMTS Sales and Marketing Director, said: “We have sent several orders on long sea voyages to the South Atlantic over the years, so we are well versed in what is required. With everything pre-fabricated at our Witney factory it is crucial that nothing is missed out. Therefore every nut and bolt, and every screw, has to be present and correct before the shipment is released.” SMTS and BAM Construction are also currently delivering a £7m bespoke medical student residential accommodation project in Truro for Plymouth University on the Royal

TimberExpo - Ricoh Arena - Coventry - 25-26 September 2012

Cornwall Hospital campus. SMTS has been appointed to supply and erect the timber frame systems for the project, which will accommodate doctors, student doctors and medical staff and is hoping to secure an Excellent rating from BREEAM. For more information visit: www.stewartmilne.com

Timber Triple Whammy for Letchworth

Three different types of timber frame systems have been used to build 60 units in an £8m flagship housing scheme in Letchworth.

Cygnum Timber Frame, Pinewood Structures and Midlands Timber Engineering (MTE) all provided units on the Tomorrow's Garden City scheme, featuring standard timber frame, a timber/Hemcrete solution and a German-style reverse wall utilising wood fibre insulation boards. The systems were specified by housing association North Hertfordshire Homes and the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation as part of a project to trial new building technologies. Cygnum and MTE supplied the timber/woodfibre board solution, MTE supplied the standard timber frame units and Pinewood Structures completed the timber/Hemcrete system. The reverse wall systems featured a mixture of Pavatex woodfibre insulation boards. The wall build-up features an internally-positioned OSB racking board

and Pavaflex flexible woodfibre insulation between 140mm-deep timber studs and then two different exterior systems for render or cladding. The timber/Hemcrete system featured an internally-positioned MultiPro XS magnesium oxide board, a 140mm frame, with additional 38x38mm frame connected together with Helifix stainless steel screws. Hemcrete then filled the frame structure, with a render finish. Cygnum supplied Ijoist roof systems as a lightweight, strong alternative to solid timber. The project, designed by Cole Thompson Anders Architects, has achieved Code Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

DECISION TIME @ WOOD AWARDS 20I2 You will be able to view entries from the 2012 shortlist at Timber Expo later this year and with a select group of entries taking part in the Timber Talks programme, so you can also hear why they have been selected as prospective best in class…

Having hosted the Wood Awards’ ceremony last year with an audience of over 200 architects and industry guests, this year, selected projects from the Wood Awards 30strong shortlist will form part of Timber Expo’s new expanded programme of seminars.

ntries recently closed for the Wood Awards 2012 and the competition is off to a strong start with the judging panel now working up to making their difficult decisions. Having hosted the Wood Awards’ ceremony last year with an audience of over 200 architects and industry guests, this year, selected projects from the Wood Awards 30-strong shortlist will form part of Timber Expo’s new expanded programme of seminars.

the small projects from the wider Private category, this year the Wood Awards took the opportunity to give much smaller projects, from bespoke staircases to immaculate garden buildings, the specific recognition they deserve. The category Repair & Adaptive Reuse still incorporates both the careful conservation and ingenious restoration seen every year, but encouraged entries where the decision to repurpose an existing building was made over simply moving or rebuilding completely.

The categories for the Wood Awards were updated for the 2012 competition with the introduction of Small Project as a main category, the renaming of the Conservation/ Restoration category as Repair & Adaptive Reuse, and the extension of one Furniture category into two: Bespoke Furniture and Production-made Furniture. In separating

Timber and wood-based product applications seen this year include timber cladding, CLT, timber-frame, engineered timber structures, panelling, solid and engineered flooring, staircases and landscape decking projects, using a huge range of temperate and tropical hardwood, softwoods, modified and engineered timber products and panel products for schools, libraries, private houses and visitor centres, to name but a few; many demonstrating real innovation in wood. With such diversity, the Wood Awards shortlist seminars at Timber Expo should be interesting indeed.

E

The Wood Awards 2012 shortlist will be exhibited in full on stand E9. A short recap

Our sponsors & exhibitors Timber Expo 2012 is set to sell out this summer, with more than 85% of the 6,000m2 already sold. International Timber/Pasquill have reaffirmed their support as Platinum sponsors, while James Latham has upgraded from Silver to Gold alongside Accsys and Lonza. Many new companies are joining the exhibitor list this year, including British Gypsum, Wallbarn, Balcas, English Woodlands Timber, Dragon Board, A&J Scott, Easi-Edge, Edward O'Riordan and Antui Sentai. Our upgraded online interactive floorplan booking system is certainly capturing the industry’s attention as we have added substantially more functionality and choice. Official show partners The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF), the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), the UK SIP Association (UKSIPS), the UK Timber Frame Association (UKTFA) and the Timber Trade Federation (TTF) have signed up as official show partners for Timber Expo 2012 and discussions are taking place with several other key associations and organisations. Many of the partners are running meetings and briefing sessions in their own right for their members, but as an integral part of the main event.

Several of the buyers who took part in 2011 felt that they needed more time and would perhaps spend two days at the show this year. This will enable us to arrange even more one-to-one meetings with exhibitors, as well as providing tours of the show for the buyers themselves. The Timber Buyers Forum will double in size in 2012 with around 100 buyer companies taking part.

Topical seminar programme A comprehensive programme of seminars will run across the two days of the show in three theatres, whose design will be as much a talking point as the presentations themselves. High calibre speakers will analyse issues and trends and share technical information on topics that visitors want to hear about.

TRADA Technical Tours Led by TRADA Technology specialists offering informed commentary on technical and legislative background to product innovation for: o VIP visitors o Participants in the Timber Buyers Forum o Press visitors o Product-specific tours for general visitors TRADA & Timbmet Student Pavilion Winning model in the competition for students of Oxford Brookes School of Architecture will be displayed in the main hall along with the 15 shortlisted entries. The brief required that the pavilion could be deconstructed, transported and used as a temporary shelter for an injured marine stranded in bad weather conditions on an island.

Timber Buyers Forum This unique feature links exhibitors with major contractors, developers and clients.

support

Timber Expo’s chosen charity for 2012 will be the UK Timber Trades Benevolent Society. We will be working with TTBS during the show to raise awareness and important funds for those members of the timber industry requiring help and future support. ounded in 1897, the Timber Trades Benevolent Society assists past and present members of the timber trade and their dependants. The TTBS not only assists aged and retired trade members and their dependants, but also some much younger who have fallen ill, become severely handicapped or have lost their partners and are still caring for their children.

F

Jean Kloos Timber Expo was introduced to TTBS by a great friend and colleague of everyone on the Event Team and at TRADA. Jean sadly died after a short illness earlier this year. She was a familiar face across the timber industry for many years, having been a former editor of Timber Trades Journal, the first woman to be National President of TTBS and a tireless journalist, press and communications consultant for TRADA and Timber Expo. Her enthusiasm, knowledge and passionate love of timber will be sorely missed.

62

The TTBS is organised on a geographical basis with nine regional committees made up of volunteers and with a UK central office located at Oulton Stone Staffordshire, where the General Manager, Ivan Savage co-ordinates the work of the Society and administers the day to day support to the Beneficiaries. “The TTBS is pleased to be working with Timber Expo in 2012,” says Ivan. “We hope that the September event is a great success, building on the excellent inaugural event in 2011. We are very grateful for the exposure that Timber Expo will give to the TTBS and the invaluable work that we do to assist the retired and sick from our industry.” The TTBS Board of Management consists of four Trustees, the national President and Vice President, the Investment Managers, Past Presidents, the General Manager and representatives from all of the nine Regional Committees. Regular assistance available to beneficiaries can include quarterly payments, purchase of TV licences,

an allowance towards telephone rental, a hamper at Christmas, payments at Christmas and in the Spring and help towards winter fuel bills. The TTBS also make individual one off grants for the replacement of domestic appliances such as cookers, refrigerators and televisions where applicants cannot fund these items from their own resources. They also assist the elderly and handicapped with contributions towards equipment for the disabled. This is often in conjunction with other organisations such as Royal British Legion, SSAFA and other charities. The TTBS also make occasional special one off grants for property repairs, towards ‘respite’ breaks and to assist with funeral costs. The TTBS would welcome additional support from any interested members of the timber trade who might wish to lend their time and effort to assist the less fortunate from their industry and to serve on any of the Regional Committees or to support the national social events. TTBS (Registered Charity No. 207734) is a Member of the Association of Charitable Organisations (ACO Registered Charity No. 1118605)

For more information on the TTBS, its work and how you can get involved or contribute visit: www.ttbs.org.uk or contact: Ivan Savage TTBS General Manager Phone: 0844 892 2205 or email: info@ttbs.org.uk
