WELCOME TO THE NATIONAL TIMBER EVENT A very warm welcome to everyone exhibiting and attending Timber Expo 2013. Showcasing an expanded range of timber technologies and wood products together with the widest display of new and innovative applications for timber within the built environment, this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever before. Of course, Timber Expo now has an exciting new home, Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre. The decision to relocate Timber Expo to arguably the biggest and best exhibition space in the country promises to see a significant increase in footfall thanks to improved accessibility and transport links. It really is a fantastic venue, and we are delighted that our show will get the exposure it deserves. But what really sets Timber Expo apart from other exhibitions is the added value that visitors can expect. It’s not just about seeing the latest products and innovations - although clearly that is important – it’s about hearing about the latest developments and the future of the industry from people whose opinions really matter. This is what this year’s Timber Talks programme promises: some of the biggest names in the industry discussing some of the hottest topics. TRADA has worked hard to pull the seminar programme together, drawing an unrivalled collection of high calibre speakers from all four corners of the built environment into one place. The hour-long themed sessions, which will be delivered in two purpose-built timber-based theatres, will cover topics such as engineered wood, innovation in timber and its use, while speakers will be drawn from the best industry insiders and those working with timber including architects. It’s an impressive line-up and we expect many of the seminars to be standing room only – so get there early!

Innovation is high on everyone’s agenda. Recent research from TRADA revealed that, (from 170 respondents asked) which areas were of most interest to them – new, innovative products and systems scored higher than any other topic. And it’s because TRADA and Timber Expo are so passionate about encouraging innovation within the timber industry, that the winners and runners up of this year’s TTJ Timber Innovation Award have been given an even greater opportunity to promote their products within the show. Each has been given a speaker slot to fill a half-day seminar session in the Solidwood theatre on Tuesday 24 September. Innovation is the lifeblood of our industry and it’s essential that we continue to support it. There can be no better platform than Timber Expo, where innovation is literally around every corner. In what has been another difficult economic year, it’s hugely encouraging to see the levels of invention and determination that the timber industry continues to demonstrate. We are delighted by the support that our loyal members continue to offer, and by the enthusiasm of the wider industry. If you’re in any doubt, simply walk the aisles at Timber Expo: we promise you won’t be disappointed. Have a great show and we look forward to seeing you again next year alongside W14.

STRENGTH, SPEED & SUSTAINABILITY Simple in structure, the Solidwood Theatre designed and built by the X-LAM Alliance, showcases the strength of timber and advanced closed panel timber technology demonstrating why the use of solid wood is beginning to soar in the UK. Strength Made from 100mm thick visible grade white wood spruce cross laminated timber, the construction of the theatre illustrates how the partners of the X-LAM Alliance work seamlessly together to design, draw, manufacture and build a vast range of projects, across all sectors to budget and programme. The model drawings, following design amendments, were sent from the X-LAM Alliance partner, B & K Structures based in Derby, to the Austrian based partner, Binderholz for the manufacture of the panels at their factory in Austria. The lifting method for the panels is decided at the design stage and cores are drilled at the factory to accommodate the lifting slings on each panel. The panels were transported by rigid trailer to NEC then unloaded by forklift. The panels were erected using a forklift with the aid of the lifting slings. Speed From approval of the design through to delivery to site, took approximately two weeks and the theatre took a few hours to build, highlighting the speed of offsite manufacturing and construction. Sustainability With environmental credentials of the highest importance in the construction and modern trading world, having the correct accreditation and certification is fundamental to success. Timber is the number one renewable mainstream construction material and can produce greener buildings with a lower carbon footprint. The timber is sourced from well managed forests and by offering only

HIGH OF PERFORMANCE LOW ON ENERGY

Designed by Frame Wise One of the key focal points at this year’s Timber Expo will be the Fabric First Seminar Theatre – designed and built by Frame Wise to showcase the evolution of engineered timber solutions. The latest timber technology will be integrated into the construction and the Theatre will be divided to showcase advanced internal finishes together with cutting-edge external cladding highlighting the optimum fabric solutions. A full range of innovative panel systems will be on show, including the TTJ Innovation Award Winning - Wise Wall T. The structure of the Wise Wall T – twin frame, closed panel system, incorporates a 'breathable wall' which negates condensation build up within the structure giving the Wise Wall panel solutions an assured performance – from conception to completion. The discussion around sustainability once centered on renewable technologies, now the well-established, Fabric First approach has heightened awareness of the benefits of applying such building principles and as a result, the market demand for innovative products

which deliver superior thermal and airtightness properties has dramatically increased. The shift towards Fabric First principles was foreseen by the senior management team at Frame Wise. By developing the products used and the construction methods employed, Frame Wise found it possible to achieve what many have wrongly regarded as the holy grail of sustainable construction - namely to significantly reduced thermal conductivity with relatively minor changes to construction methods at little or no extra build cost. The Fabric First theatre will host a full programme of informative Timber Talk Seminars, including Simon Orrells, MD of Frame Wise, presentation on the TTJ Innovation Award Winning Wise Wall T. The expert Frame Wise team will be on-hand at the adjacent stand B28 to offer advice on hybrid engineered timber systems. More technical information can be found by visiting www.framewiseltd.co.uk

WORLDSCAPE from Atmos

Our visitor lounge this year is a very special area that will be a genuine focal point for the show and an unmissable piece of timber design. Conceived and designed by groundbreaking agency Atmos, Worldscape has been driven by the vision of architect Alex Haw. It was the centrepiece of the banqueting event Global Feast, that coincided with each evening of the London 2012 Olympics. It has been hosted by The Stratford Old Town Hall, Newham Borough Council Headquarters, Lime Wharf gallery, and Memrise. “We do a lot of work in our practice with maps and data,” says Alex. “How do we make it useable? We found an open source digital terrain model and then through a horizontal MRI scan process we broke it up into different slices. Imagine slicing through a section of a mountain? When we cut through it at the start we had a small plywood shelf at each 500m altitude level, then made that section straight so we got

elegant inter-connections. A core principle was that everyone would be sitting on the data of the world unified on a single bench together communally, collectively and united. We are trying to create something utterly faithful which is recognisable but not instantly so. Something that requires a degree of unravelling and that rewards inspection. It’s like looking at a map edge-on…” Dhh Timber will be exhibiting with Atmos who created the striking 15 x 6 x 2m dining table. Shaped as a world map, it is made from FSC-certified Latvian white melamine Birch Plywood. Dhh Timber was the obvious supplier for this project as the UK’s premier distributor of Birch Plywood. Dhh Timber is fascinated by the many ways their sheet materials are used, from construction to furniture production and much more. VIP LOUNGE 20I3 In keeping with trying to make all the major structures at Timber Expo real talking points, our VIP Lounge will be built by EcoCurves – a member of Jagram Group and one of the largest manufacturers of laminated timber curves in Europe. The showcase glulam lounge will be made from the same quality timber that EcoCurves use to build its signature buildings. “EcoCurves are manufactured from high quality European coniferous timber cut into thin layers and laminated in a powerful hydraulic press to form its final shape,” said Paweł Cygulski, Market Manager for Jagram S.A. “Modern machinery and the use of high quality raw materials enables us to produce structural arches with a span up to 19m (soon achieving 26m after our plant modernisation). “We decided that Timber Expo would be the best place to show our capability to manufacture unique and great looking products. With that idea in mind, this year EcoCurves is sponsoring The VIP Lounge and this exclusive area will let you experience our idea of creating glulam arches.

The 2013 shortlist will be on show throughout Timber Expo and you will be able to hear more about the projects in more detail during the Timber Talks programme.

The Wood Awards is the UK’s premier award in the timber sector and will once again recognise outstanding design, craftsmanship and installations in wood that have taken place over the last 12 months. This year’s 30-strong shortlist is drawn from a record breaking 318 British projects featuring unique private houses, stunning small projects, outstanding restorations, impressive public buildings and extraordinary bespoke and production-made furniture, ranging from the traditional to the cutting edge. The shortlisted projects range from Wilkinson Eyre Architect’s Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth featuring Canadian western red cedar to the Atmos undulating RoominaRoom in London, using birch plywood, European oak and American black walnut and in the Furniture categories, Angus Ross’s deconstructed Tay Bench in Scottish and European oak is shortlisted alongside a second Atmos project, 16m of continuous integrated landscape furniture in Latvian birch plywood with seating for 80 people, which you can see and sit on as part of the Timber Expo Visitor Lounge. The independent judging panel of architecture, engineering, craftsmanship and design experts and specialists led by Michael Morrison of Purcell UK and Sean Sutcliffe of Benchmark

TTJ Innovation Awards

DESIGNING THE FUTURE The TTJ Innovation Awards, sponsored by Timber Expo and TRADA, were a hotly contested affair this year and all of the 2013 shortlisted technologies will be on display or in use at Timber Expo. You will also be able to hear all about the secrets of their success during the Timber Talks session Designing the Future. This collection of special presentations from the shortlisted projects from the Timber Expo/TRADAsponsored TTJ Innovation Awards will give a glimpse at what the timber industry may be doing in the years to come. Displaying a cross section of challenges the entries show how a difficult economy and new building regulations create amazing opportunities for innovative thinking, fresh approaches and effective new products. “It was encouraging to see such a wide array of innovations being entered for the Award this year,” said Timber Expo’s Darren Richards. “Innovation is at the heart of Timber Expo and we are very pleased to have been able to get involved with the TTJ Innovation Award again this year. We give the shortlisted products a guaranteed platform of exposure within Timber Expo and I know that our visitors will be fascinated with all of the technologies that we have seen during the judging process.”

Timber Industry Summit

2013

ProTimber

At the heart of Timber Expo, a wide range of timber industry leaders will take part in the second annual ProTimber industry summit. This year discussions will focus on the opportunities ahead for the timber sector in developing a clear and defined response to the UK Governments Construction Strategy 2025. The Summit will be boosted by cross timber industry trade association support from BWF, CONFOR, TDCA, TIMCON, TRADA, TTF, UKSIPS, UKTFA, Wood for Good, WPA and WPIF under the framework of the Timber Industry Accord that was signed 18 months ago. Under the headline banner of ‘one vision one voice’ the Summit will see the discussion centre on the UK Governments Construction Strategy 2025, with particular focus on: • Smart construction and digital design • Low carbon and sustainable construction • Improved trade performance. ProTimber 2013 will be tailored around these three key strategic priorities and with the help of a professional facilitator, an invited panel and audience discussion, examine how the timber industry can respond positively and cohesively to these issues. The Summit will aim to identify and agree what steps those working within the timber industry can take to reinforce and

40

Visitor Guide Sponsored by www.sudati.com.br

grow its position as the leading renewable material within the construction market by capitalising on a well-defined response to the Governments ‘call to action’. “The 2012 ProTimber Summit event put its finger on a number of key points, provided plenty of facts and opinions and proved an excellent format for engaging with everyone involved,” said TRADA’s Rupert Scott. “With the framework of the Governments Construction Strategy 2025 at the heart of the 2013 Summit we look forward to raising the level of debate and generating new ideas to contribute to the future strategy of the Timber Industry Accord over the next 12 months and tackle some of the amazing opportunities timber is creating.” ProTimber 2013 will take place at the Timber Accord Pavilion Stand F1. The event is ‘invitation only’ but the organisers have reserved 20 places within the 160 seat capacity theatre for non-invitees who would like to participate and feel that they can contribute to the debate. Structural Timber Association

LIVE LAUNCH From September 2013, the UKTFA will change its branding to the Structural Timber Association, encompassing manufacturers of all structural timber systems, elements and components. The STA will be officially launched here at Timber Expo.

In recognition of its growing membership that encompasses producers, users and specifiers of timber, the remit of the new STA will be broader and will now represent not just timber frame, but all users of structural timber products. The timber industry is no longer defined simply by the supply of timber kits it is driven by intelligent and integrated hybrid solutions. Because of this, the UKTFA now stands for much more than ‘timber frame’, and a broader Association will reflect the evolving industry. Mark Prisk MP has also expressed his wish to join us for the event, should his diary allow. Chief Executive Andrew Carpenter says: “The UKTFA now stands for much more than ‘timber frame’, and we felt that we needed to broaden the Association to reflect the evolving industry. The overall purpose of the organisation will continue to be the promotion of structural timber products and systems within the UK construction industry – something the UKTFA has done for eleven years to good effect. With the growing understanding that timber construction is the way forward in terms of energy efficiency, time saving and flexibility, the new STA will reiterate these messages and continue all the good work of the UKTFA through its programme of seminars, factory tours and research.” Keynote Speaker Wayne Hemingway MBE Hemingway Design Hemingway Design is a multi-disciplinary design agency led by two generations of the Hemingway family and a wider team of talented designers. Founded by Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway in 1981 it focuses on affordable and social design, with a core philosophy of aiming to ‘improve things that matter in life.’ HemingwayDesign have worked with West Lancashire Council and English Partnerships on a 12-month project to create a new vision and then a masterplan for 60’s new town Skelmersdale. Coillte Panel Products is part of Coillte, the Irish Forestry Company, which owns over 442,000 hectares of FSC® certified forest.

Medite products are CARB2 compliant conforming to one of the strictest ever controls of formaldehyde emission levels.

For a timber products company, this parentage is a huge advantage. It differentiates Coillte Panel Products and puts us ahead of our competitors. At all stages, we can properly control the brands we produce – manufacture, market and support them. With Medite and SmartPly to our name and with a connection to thousands of hectares of forest, Coillte Panel Products are perfectly placed with security of supply and a record of innovation.

SmartPly OSB is both versatile and strong. Its end-use applications and its customers are diverse. Distributors, architects, and large construction companies, as well as many local smaller builders choose SmartPly over the competition. SmartPly OSB2 is a general purpose board and a popular choice for applications like garden sheds, packaging and pallet tops. SmartPly OSB3 is a load bearing panel designed for use in structural applications and where moisture may be present. SiteProtect and SiteProtect plus are OSB3-coated site hoarding panels, designed to save both time and money. ToughPly is a fully certified legal and sustainable OSB3 alternative to plywood suitable for a whole range of building applications.

That Medite is the leading brand of MDF can be attributed to two vital factors – consistent high quality and a large range of variants. Firstly, Medite Premier is always fit for purpose and Medite FRis a flame retardant panel. MR is moisture resistant, while Medite Exterior withstands all types of weather. Ecologique offers a zero added formaldehyde panel for use in environmentally sensitive interior applications and Medite Ultralite and Lite are perfect for applications where weight may be an issue. Suitable for external use as facades, cladding fascias and sofits, window and door elements, as well as wet environments. All

BOLIVIAN PAVILION The Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI) will be presenting twelve Bolivian timber product suppliers at Timber Expo 2013. These selected suppliers of tropical timber products are ready to form long-term, profitable relationships with European partners.

The future of the wood sector lies in finished products. This is the prediction from CBI, the leading expert in imports from developing countries. “We see a clear trend in that direction among European buyers,” says CBI wood sector expert Marco Bijl. “More and more European companies are switching from manufacturing to buying and selling only.” These Bolivian suppliers were selected by experienced CBI sector experts. The companies have already invested heavily to prepare for success in Europe. They have been carefully audited in terms of quality, consistency and reliability and have completed the CBI Export Coaching Programme. They have adapted their organisations and products to the European market requirements, thus reducing the risk for European buyers. All are FSC-certified or in the process of certification. All are experienced exporters of finished products such as garden furniture, decking, doors, garden tiles, components and mouldings. “This trend towards finished products is becoming stronger every year,” says Bijl. “The combination of finished products and certification is definitely going to be

52

a winner in the future.” The twelve companies presented at the CBI Pavilion will display this winning combination. Over the past 40 years, thousands of exporters have found their way to Europe through CBI’s extensive programmes in export management, quality, reliability and the requirements necessary to succeed in the European market place These suppliers have the on-going support of CBI, as well as local organisations like CADEX, an important Bolivian service provider for Bolivian exporters. Representatives from most companies, as well as experienced timber experts from CBI, will be available at the Bolivian Pavilion. Pollmeier is Europe’s leading wood processing company in the hardwood sector running sawmills in Creuzburg and Aschaffenburg (Germany) with an annual cutting capacity of 600,000 cbm (2012). Thanks to highly automated production technology, similar to the automobile industry, Pollmeier is able to combine mass production with high end product quality. Due to the specific production technology there is still enough room for individual solutions for optimising the yield of each log. Therefore “Pollmeier beech” has become a worldwide brand mark for superior quality offered at exceptional value for money. Good ideas have to be appreciated Keen to utilise the excellent mechanical properties of beech for timber construction, company owner Ralf Pollmeier took up what essentially was an “old” idea. Beech had been recognized for its strength as far back as almost a century ago. In those days, aircraft propellers were made using laminated beech veneer as the only material satisfying the stringent requirements. What once required costly bespoke manufacture, Pollmeier nowadays turns into cost-effective and efficient serial production using innovative process technology. It’s the dawn of a new era for beech! Laminated Veneer Lumber made of Beech – the new material in Pollmeier quality The new Laminated Veneer Lumber from Pollmeier is scheduled for market launch by the end of 2013. The innovative production technology using a continuous press line allows for the first time to produce this material in an economically efficient and standardised process at competitive prices. Finally, the superior physical and mechanical properties of beech can be used in timber constructions in a way that can be expected from “Pollmeier beech” – Smart. Strong. Stylish!

Pollmeier LVL Beams Superior load-bearing capacity. Inspiring design opportunity. Pollmeier LVL beam is an absolute novelty taking beech where it should have been long ago because of its mechanical properties – on the construction site. Pollmeier LVL beam is composed of strips of bonded LVL board; up to 18 m in length, it is capable to cope with big tasks. Pollmeier LVL beams meet all requirements of modern timber construction, especially when it seeks to distance itself from its rustic image. Their outstanding mechanical strength properties allow for smaller, yet equally strong, cross sections resulting in slimmer and more filigree structures of delicate and elegant looking beams. www.pollmeier.com

INDUSTRY CHAMPIONS sponsored by

You will be seeing and hearing more about the Timber Accord at the Timber Accord Pavilion in the centre of the show. This will be a unique opportunity to touch base with some of the sector’s most influential trade bodies. Sponsored by Timbmet and building upon the Timber Accord agreement signed in 2012. The Pavilion will be situated at the heart of Timber Expo on the main exhibition floor, this will be a unique opportunity to touch base with many of the leading timber trade bodies representing the supply chain of the forestry and timber industries, in the same place at the same time. The ProTimber 2013 summit will also take place here to discuss the role of timber in the Government’s Construction Strategy.

The Three Accord Principles: The signatories of the UK Timber Industries Associations' Accord agree to: 1. Work together on timber representation, promotion and market development activity whenever it is feasible to do so. The timber industry needs to work together in complementary and mutually supportive ways to achieve maximum impact from its resources.

The Accord was signed at the offices of the Timber Trade Federation last year by the Chief Executives of eleven timber trade associations. It commits each to working together in areas of common interest and strategic goals, in particular to ensure that stakeholders see a joined up, collaborative approach and that best use is made of available funding and resources. Implicit in this objective is an industry focus on customer needs and a drive for continual improvement in performance. The Accord establishes a framework and methods of working between the signatories to achieve its objectives.

2. Endorse and support to the best of their abilities any initiative by any signatory to this Accord that is in line with this objective. 3. Recognise the close relationship that each signatory has with its own community and to use these close relationships to best effect when planning and undertaking any new initiative or activity. Signatories undertake to consider the opportunities from working with others in order to share resources and costs and to extend outreach and impact.

Manufactured by Vita Cellular Foams, Vitaseal is a unique combination of resilient foam and water resisting binder. The combination produces a ‘dry’ pre-formed strip seal used to resist weather ingress in fenestration, roofing and construction applications. The visco-elastic properties also offer noise and vibration damping. The impregnated foam structure also provides an energy efficient thermal barrier. Vitaseal accommodates the movement of the structure whilst ensuring that a weathertight seal remains constant. Timber Trades Benevolent Society Timber Expo’s chosen charity for 2013 is once again the UK Timber Trades Benevolent Society. We will be working with TTBS during the show to raise awareness and important funds for those members of the timber industry requiring help and future support. Drop by Stand X19 and give generously to our chosen charity. You never know when you might need them. This year the TTBS will be available to speak to in person on Stand X19. General Manager, Ivan Savage co-ordinates the work of the Society and administers the day to day support to the beneficiaries: “The TTBS is pleased to be working with Timber Expo once again in 2013,” said Ivan. “We are very grateful for the exposure that Timber Expo will give to the TTBS and the invaluable work that we do to assist the retired and sick from our industry.” Regular assistance available to beneficiaries can include quarterly payments, purchase of TV licences, an allowance towards telephone rental, a hamper at Christmas, payments at Christmas and in the Spring and help towards winter fuel bills. The TTBS also make individual one off grants for the replacement of domestic appliances such as cookers, refrigerators and televisions where applicants cannot fund these items from their own resources. TTBS also assist the elderly and handicapped with contributions towards equipment for the disabled. This is often in conjunction with other organisations such as Royal British Legion, SSAFA and other charities. The TTBS also make occasional special one off grants for property repairs, towards ‘respite’ breaks and to assist with funeral costs. The TTBS would welcome additional support from any interested members of the timber trade who might wish to lend their time and effort to assist the less fortunate from their industry and to serve on any of the Regional Committees or to support the national social events. For more information on the TTBS, its work and how you can get involved or contribute visit: www.ttbs.org.uk
