WELCOME TO THE UK’S NATIONAL TIMBER SHOW A very warm welcome to everyone exhibiting and attending Timber Expo 2014. Showcasing an expanded range of timber technologies and wood products together with the widest display of new and innovative applications for timber within the built environment, this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever before. 2014 will be Timber Expo’s second year at NEC Birmingham. The decision to relocate Timber Expo to arguably the biggest and best exhibition space last year proved a wise one: we saw a significant increase in visitor numbers due to improved accessibility and transport links. It really is a fantastic venue, and we are delighted that our show will continue to get the exposure it thoroughly deserves. But what really sets Timber Expo apart from other exhibitions is the added value that visitors can expect. It’s not just about seeing the latest products and innovations – although clearly that is important – it’s about hearing about the latest developments and the future of the industry from people whose opinions really matter. That is what this year’s Timber Focus seminar programme will deliver. TRADA has worked hard to pull the seminar programme together, with a collection of high calibre speakers that we believe is the strongest yet. Visitors will hear from big-name companies like Arup, Buro Happold, Skidmore Owings & Merrill, Hopkins, BAM, Sir Robert McAlpine, to name just a few. The half-day themed sessions, which will be delivered in two purpose-built timber-based theatres, will cover topics such as engineered wood, innovation in timber and its many uses. It’s certainly an impressive line-up and

we expect many of the seminars to be standing room only – so get there early! Meanwhile, two other theatres will be running Toolbox Talks – 50 sessions given by exhibitors. These proved very popular last year, both with the exhibitors who delivered them and visitors who listened. This is where you can hear the detailed nuts and bolts of how to build with specific timber building systems. They are well worth making time for. TRADA and Timber Expo joined forces again to sponsor this year’s TTJ Timber Innovation Award, which for 2014 was divided into two categories, one to highlight innovation in product development and one to highlight innovation in market development. Each winner has been given a speaker slot to fill a half-day seminar as part of the ‘Innovation: Designing the Future’ session on Tuesday 07 October. Innovation is the lifeblood of our industry and it is essential that we continue to support it. There can be no better platform than Timber Expo, where innovation is literally around every corner. Why not take a look at the Fingers Crossed sculpture, brought from the London Design Festival, hosted by Arup? It’s a perfect example of what can be achieved in timber. Or the small-scale model (made from 30,000 pieces of plywood) of the Slipstream sculpture currently adorning Heathrow Terminal 2? As the industry emerges from economic recession, it is hugely encouraging to see the levels of invention and determination that the timber industry continues to demonstrate. We are pleased to report a significant growth in exhibitors from mainland Europe, who are keen to show their ideas and products to a growing UK construction industry.

TIMBER EXPO > NEC BIRMINGHAM > 07-08 OCTOBER 2014

And, if you wanted evidence that the future of the timber industry is in strong hands, at the end of the first day, £5,000 worth of cash prizes will be awarded to students in TRADA’s Velocity design competition. Comments from students about the sustainability, versatility and diversity of timber suggest that it is a material that continues to excite the designers and architects of tomorrow. We are delighted by the support that our loyal members continue to offer, and by the enthusiasm of the wider industry. Timber, and Timber Expo, is in an excellent position to grow with all the hard work that has been done over the last few years by those in the industry. If you’re in any doubt, simply walk the aisles at Timber Expo: we promise you won’t be disappointed. Have a brilliant show and we look forward to seeing you again next year.

A BIG HELLO > TIMBER EXPO 2014

A BIG HELLO A very warm welcome to everyone at Timber Expo 2014. Our fourth year is turning into the most exciting year so far and the show is now well and truly ‘On the Map’. On the exhibition floor we have a record numbers of exhibitors representing the very best the timber industry has to offer with market leaders presenting superb products, exciting innovation and displaying high levels of sustainability.

Not only have we record numbers of exhibitors, but also the most overseas companies ever present at our event. I think this means we can proudly boast that Timber Expo has a global reputation. This means a constant and progressive presence of new products, innovative ideas to the UK market, combined with exciting integration between international companies and UK merchants and distributors. Moving the show to October has been particularly successful as it provides us with the opportunity of co-locating with W14 – the show which takes place every two years for machinery and timber furniture manufacturers. They are right next door to us with a walkway between the shows ensuring visitors can enjoy both events. The content of the seminars in our two Timber Focus Seminar Theatres is top drawer and is all free. The STA sponsored Seminar Theatre 1 is built by several members of the Structural Timber Association demonstrating the variety of products used in a timber frame building. Whilst the

Timber Focus Seminar Theatre 2 is sponsored and provided by the X-Lam Alliance and shows why working with engineered timber is so successful. Make sure you take some time to hear what is on offer at our Toolbox Talks as they are brimming with expertise. These are a showcase for exhibitors to explain and present the products displayed on their stands. As you enter the show you will be greeted by the Timber Connect stand, our striking information desk at the entrance to the show. Make it your first port of call to receive directions and information on any part of the event. As I tell everyone – timber is one of the construction industry’s finest natural assets and the timber industry really deserves a successful event to celebrate it. Many thanks to all our exhibitors and sponsors and enjoy the show... Loretta Sales Event Director Loretta.sales@timber-expo.co.uk

THEATRE TWO Designed and built by the X-LAM Alliance

Simple in structure, the Solidwood Theatre designed and built by the X-LAM Alliance and showcases the strength of timber and advanced panel timber technology. It demonstrates why the use of solid wood such as cross laminated timber (CLT) and glulam is beginning to soar in the UK. Strength Made from 100mm thick visible grade white wood spruce CLT, the construction of the theatre illustrates how the partners of the X-LAM Alliance work seamlessly together to design, draw, manufacture and build a vast range of projects, across all sectors to budget and programme. The model drawings, following design amendments, were sent from the X-LAM Alliance partner, B & K Structures based in Derby, to the Austrian based partner, Binderholz for the manufacture of the panels at their factory in Austria. The lifting method for the panels is decided at the design stage and cores are drilled at the factory to accommodate the lifting slings on each panel. The panels were transported by rigid trailer to Birmingham NEC then unloaded by forklift. The panels were erected using a forklift with the aid of the lifting slings. Speed From approval of the design through to delivery to site, took approximately two

weeks and the theatre took a few hours to build, highlighting the speed of offsite manufacturing and construction. Sustainability With environmental credentials of the highest importance in the construction and modern trading world, having the correct accreditation and certification is fundamental to success. Timber is the number one renewable mainstream construction material and can produce greener buildings with a lower carbon footprint. The timber is sourced from well managed forests and by offering only FSC or PEFC-certified timber, the Alliance ensures a fully transparent Green Supply Chain. Certification and an unbroken Chain of Custody proves legality and sustainability of the construction products used. The X-LAM Alliance’s award winning team provide an all-encompassing inhouse design, drawing, manufacturing and installation service for CLT structures. The showcase glulam lounges will be made from the same quality timber that EcoCurves uses to build its signature buildings. “EcoCurves are manufactured from high quality European coniferous timber cut into thin layers and laminated in a powerful hydraulic press to form its final shape,” said Paweł Cygulski, Marketing Manager for Jagram S.A. “Modern machinery and the use of high quality raw materials enables us to produce structural arches with a span up to 26m.” “We decided to support Timber Expo again as we believe it is the best place to show our capability to manufacture unique and great looking products. With that idea in mind, this year EcoCurves is sponsoring and constructing The VIP Lounge and constructing the Media Centre and these exclusive areas will let everyone at the show experience our idea of creating glulam arches.” “Our products are characterised by high strength and quality in accordance with standard EN 14080 – GL24C. EcoCurves is a place where you will find truly bespoke products – they are made to suit your needs. We glue timber in class D4, the glue spread is CNC optimised. We co-operate only with world leading certified suppliers. Our glulam curves are certified (GL-24, ISO 9001, FSC, PEFC and EC Certificate of Conformity) and tested in our own laboratories.” “In the last 20 years we have tested most of the world’s leading glue, machinery and tool brands, adding our own patented solutions to create a technologically unique production process. Our factory computers will turn the most elaborate shapes into product in just 40 minutes.”

CREATIVE STRUCTURES > TIMBER EXPO 2014

CREATIVE STRUCTURES & LANDMARK INSTALLATIONS Timber is a flexible material that can be used in many different ways across the built environment – not just in construction but in sculpture and furniture design. At Timber Expo we always try to bring a few eye-catching exhibits that help express the exciting possibilities of wood. Here are a few to look out for…

Fingers Crossed Designed by the Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture with Arup and built from 9 mm birch plywood supplied by TRADA member Hanson Plywood. Fingers Crossed is best described as a series of interlocking teeth – like giant timber combs – and is designed to exploit and celebrate the material behaviour of wood relying solely on friction, rather than metal connections, as a joining solution. It is a real-life exploration of the bending capacity and connection possibilities that timber panels provide by integrating structural and spatial performance into one elegant architectural solution.

Slipstream At the centre of the exhibition hall will be a scale model with 30,000 jigsaw pieces that will be an exact replica of what is going to be the largest timber sculpture in the world. The complex architectural challenges of turning a simple idea – solidifying the motion of a “joyfully cartwheeling aircraft” is a vast kit‐of‐parts jigsaw of pieces.

Andrew Lawrence, Director at Arup, said: “Fingers Crossed is an incredibly complex design, borne out of numerous trials, and yet the simplicity of its aesthetics is breathtaking. We hope visitors will be equally impressed by the beauty of the sculpture – as well as the flexibility that timber has afforded in the design process.”

Constructed using only panel‐based, CNC‐cut parts – the ‘flatpack’ sculpture is simple and quick to assemble. This required that the overall shape be an exact representation of the motion, to give high quality surfaces which could be ‘unwrapped’ and made from flat sheets. There were no precedents for this work. Creating the unique form, and translating it into a buildable kit‐ of‐parts for rapid assembly, required a novel combination of film animation software, aerospace design tools and scripting to accomplish. The completed animation consists of 300 wire ‘frames’, in three dimensions. Using a series of scripts to process the large datasets involved, the trace of each vertex in the aircraft over the course of the 300 frames was formed into a spline describing its motion. The splines were then joined by the script in sequence to create a series of ruled, developable, ribbon surfaces, revealing the entirety of the motion.

You can hear more about this project in the Timber Focus programme: Pushing Boundaries: Stretching Imaginations Tuesday 07 October.

BM TRADA LIVE ZONE > TIMBER EXPO 2014

BM TRADA ‘goes ‘live’ at Timber Expo BM TRADA will be showcasing its timber expertise in dramatic fashion at this year’s Timber Expo with a new ‘live zone’ featuring an extensive range of demonstrations and seminars.. will conduct a demonstration examining the different design and build aspects of a typical timber frame construction.

With origins dating back to 1934, last year saw BM TRADA combine the individual group companies including BM TRADA Certification Ltd, TRADA Technology Ltd and Chiltern International Fire Ltd (including Chiltern Dynamics) – under one brand and adopt a fresh new look. Now operating as a strong single identity, the international testing, inspection, certification and compliance body, will host a wide range of practical demonstrations – all given by experts in their field. Kyle Morris, BM TRADA Senior Technical Officer – windows and doors, will demonstrate elements of the PAS 24 test on an enhanced security timber window whilst Vic Kearley, Principal Technical Officer – timber, will be using different types of material to demonstrate slip resistance and carry out a soft body impact test to show the difference in performance between different types of timber flooring. Meanwhile, Lewis Taylor, Timber Frame Consultant

Sponsor of the Visitor Guide www.sudati.com.br

Nick Clifford, Technical Consultant will be carrying out timber species identification demonstrations, examining different species and demonstrating the methods employed to verify the wood species in a product. Visitors will also get the chance to ‘look down the microscope’ to see for themselves. Meanwhile Phil O’Leary, Senior Technical Consultant will conduct a timber strength grading demonstration providing visitors with the opportunity to get an overview of the process of grading timber - and the difference in approach between softwood and hardwood. Additionally, visitors to the stand will be able to see first-hand the differences between a correctly and incorrectly installed fire door as well as just how effective a correctly specified and installed fire door can be at resisting the spread of fire via a burnt example housed in a Perspex display case. All the demonstrations will be hosted on BM TRADA’s stand F30, the footprint of which has been substantially increased to almost 100m2 for 2014 to cater for the extensive programme of activities.

In addition to the demonstrations, BM TRADA’s Technical Experts will cover some of the hottest topics in the timber industry as part of its seminar programme at this year’s Timber Expo. Popular timber subjects including timber species verification and the EUTR, timber in historic buildings – where Andrew Pitman, Technical Business Development Manager, timber, will talk about the importance and challenges involved in assessing the condition and strength of historic timber and CE marking versus third party certification will all be discussed on the stand. In addition, Jane Owen, Head of Sales and Marketing, UK Certification Services, will deliver a presentation on Willmott Dixon and WWF UK – a Project Certification case study while Simon Bailey, Product Assessor – fire, will look at the fire safety challenges and solutions for historic buildings. Each demonstration/seminar will last around 20 minutes, with additional time set aside afterwards for questions. There is no need to book – delegates just turn up five minutes before the start of each session (although attendance to the seminars is on a first come/first served basis).

On top of this, BM TRADA will be hosting surgery sessions, where visitors will be given the chance to talk/ask any questions they might have relating to a timber project they might be working on. To complete the programme, the shortlisted entries into this year’s ‘Velocity in British Timber student competition’ will be hosted on the BM TRADA stand. At 3.30pm on Tuesday each student will be given the opportunity to present their projects, talking about their inspiration for their designs and their use of timber. Following this, the judges will announce the winner in Timber Expo’s CLT theatre at 5pm. BM TRADA has almost 80 years experience in helping businesses succeed. We help customers large and small to prove their business and product credentials and to improve performance and compliance. So, when experience matters, come and talk to us.

TTJ AWARDS > TIMBER EXPO 2014

TTJ AWARDS Innovation Awards 2014 Timber Expo and TRADA once again joint-sponsored the TTJ Timber Innovation this year and an innovative glulam timber beam and a new roof framing and engineering software product were the deserved winners. You can hear all about both winners in the Timber Focus seminars on Day Two of the show in the STA Fabric First Theatre.

Hess Hybrid is described as: “an innovative glulam timber beam that combines two types of wood whose respective advantages ideally complement each other.” Essentially, the product features a softwood core laminated in cross sections for additional strength encased in a hardwood outer (such as oak or beech). So not only does Hess Hybrid perform to the highest levels is also delivers a hardwood aesthetic. “For the first time now it has become possible to use special types of wood in the production of glued laminated timbers, whose use in the full crosssection of glulam timber beams would otherwise not be admitted and which are difficult to produce,” says Hess.

Competition in the awards for 2014 was fierce and overall the judges were impressed with the high standard of entries, making the achievements of Hess Timber, with its Hess Hybrid product and MiTek Industries, with its Pamir software, even more commendable. This year’s competition was split into two categories: Innovative product development, where some aspect of the whole or part of a product needs to demonstrate that it is innovative in its sector and Innovative market development, where the innovation will have been applied to show how the market for a given product range has been exploited to greater effect.

Sponsor of the Visitor Guide www.sudati.com.br

Awarding the 2014 TTJ Innovation Award for Innovative Product Development, the judges said Hess Hybrid: “cleverly addressed a Standards constraint to provide an innovative product with an engineering twist and aesthetic that none of the judges had seen before.”

TTJ AWARDS > TIMBER EXPO 2014

Meanwhile, commenting on MiTek Industries’ Pamir software, the judges applauded the “phenomenal amount of man hours” that had gone into the development of Pamir which “allows the user to design extremely quickly, quote and make instant recalculations at any point in the process.” MiTek says the new software: “delivers the modern truss manufacturer quicker estimating capabilities, quicker roof editing tools and a more integrated software environment.”

Commenting on this year’s TTJ Awards Rupert Scott, TRADA’s Membership & Marketing Manager, said: “The Timber Innovation Award provides an excellent platform to demonstrate the high levels of innovation within the timber industry today. TRADA believes passionately in innovation and we are really excited to now be able to acknowledge and award people in two legitimate areas of innovation.” Timber Expo Event Director Loretta Sales added: “As a show we make a real effort to showcase the best the timber industry has to offer and it was great to see the serious efforts that all the entries had made. We hope that the seminar sessions we have provided for the winners are useful for all our visitors to see and hear why these have been chosen.”

Managing Director of MiTek UK & Ireland, David Fraser said: “The launch of Pamir is the most significant software development to have taken place in our industry during the last 20 years and we believe that it will set our customers even further ahead in today’s competitive market place.”

At the heart of Timber Expo is the Timber Buyers and Specifiers Forum – a dynamic environment for building business networks. This focused approach has a highly successful track record in creating new business relationships and facilitating meetings. All participants in the Forum have a strong desire to engage at the highest level with decision makers that have direct influence over procurement decisions. Feedback on the 2013 event was extremely positive with 100% of participants confirming they would like to take part in the 2014 event. All of the Forum activities and meetings are matched to participants needs and provide the opportunity to extend crucial supplier networks and to find out more about the latest product innovations. “This is not purely a networking event,” said Event Director, Loretta Sales. “For Timber Expo exhibitors it is a vital part of the show. For buyers and specifiers it is both time

and cost effective – they are in control and can accept or decline meeting requests. Where in the UK can you meet in one place, innovative companies from across the globe providing sustainable timber solutions to build public and private buildings - from care homes, schools and hospitals to housing developments and shopping centres?” Some of the most well regarded construction companies, housing developers, architects, engineers and specifiers are taking part in the 2014 event. This year for the first time a team from Barratt Developments and Barratt Homes are taking part. As one of the largest and most well-known housing developers, the sustainability and speed of construction offered by structural timber is of great interest to them. Timber may be one of the oldest building materials but the sector is now one of the most innovative.

THE STRUCTURAL TIMBER ASSOCIATION > TIMBER EXPO 2014

PROFILE: The Structural Timber Association (STA) Call on Quality The Structural Timber Association (STA) has had a successful year since its rebrand from the UKTFA at last year’s Timber Expo. The association recently welcomed the full membership of the UKSIPS and collectively now forms one of the strongest trade bodies in the construction sector. Andrew Carpenter, chief executive of the STA, gives an update on recent activities. With positive economic news continuing to emanate from the construction sector, the STA has been working tirelessly in recent months to ensure our members are best positioned to capitalise on the upturn. In April, we were delighted to announce that Whitbread, one of the UK’s largest hotel and restaurant operators, will now only use the products and services of STA members in its future timberbased projects. The company, which operates household brands including Premier Inn and Costa Coffee, builds and manages hundreds of properties across the UK, with timber playing a key part in the company’s approach. At the end of May we held our first AGM since the launch of the STA. AGM since rebranding from the UK Timber Frame Association last September. The AGM saw a record turnout, as well as giving us the chance to welcome the membership of UKSIPS, which disbanded and whose members joined the STA at the start of April.

Sponsor of the Visitor Guide www.sudati.com.br

By joining forces, we feel that we are creating a stronger voice for our sector, by growing our influence and demonstrating the diversity our various technologies have within the construction industry as a whole. We were joined at the AGM by guest speaker Suzannah Nichol MBE of the National Specialist Contractors’ Council (NSCC), who highlighted the lack of payment terms within construction contracts and how this stymies industry growth and progress. This is an issue which the STA is tackling head-on, and as of 1 June, we have joined the NSCC and are asking members to consider adopting the principles of the Supply Chain Payment Charter. Peter Hansford, the Government’s Chief Construction Adviser, also joined us to give a keynote speech regarding the Construction 2025 strategy. As I am sure you will agree, the STA is currently on the up and there has never been a better time to be part of our success. The Association is recognised as the authoritative voice of the structural timber industry, providing news and views from across the sector. Members benefit from the most up-to-date technical and educational information, alongside recognised training initiatives. The auditing process which the Association has in place also helps to deliver high levels of client confidence, with the STA logo standing as a mark of quality and assurance. Now is an exciting time for timber and we look forward to building the future together.

GOLD SPONSOR > British Board of Agrément > TIMBER EXPO 2014

GOLD SPONSOR STAND: B20

Come and see us on stand B20 Our stand will be the focal point for a series of short presentations given by our technical teams specialising in energy and ventilation, materials and engineering. They are designed to give an insight into the methodologies used and recent process improvements which make our procedures more streamlined and efficient. In addition to this, two of our sector managers will lead two Toolbox Talks. Luke Adams, Sector Manager for Windows and Doors, will be talking about the fenestration and door sector and how manufacturers can ensure compliance to building regulations. George Higgs, Sector Manager for Building Services, will be holding a presentation covering solutions to the Building Regulations (part L) which requires that both U-values and junction ψ-values be calculated by ‘competent’ individuals. In his presentation, George will highlight a competency scheme to assess and certify competence in relation to U-value and condensation risk calculations. He will also cover how the BBA has helped to provide an accredited thermal bridging scheme. The aim of which is to provide junction ψ-values that are accurate, flexible in scope and easy to use.

The British Board of Agrément (BBA) is one of the UK’s leading notified bodies offering approval, certification and test services to manufacturers of products and systems supplying the construction industry. We also certify installers of these systems who can demonstrate their competence and professionalism. Developed over six decades, our expertise is aimed at helping companies realise their potential in today’s competitive environment. BBA approval is recognised by building control, government departments, architects, local authorities, specifiers, and industry insurers including the NHBC. At the show we will be promoting our certification, test, management systems and inspection services and highlighting some recent new developments. For instance we have recently assessed some new composite window systems with our first approval being Munster Joinery’s Passiv AluClad system. It consists of two frames made from different materials – the external one is powder-coated aluminium and the internal is made of laminated timber.

There is plenty to come and see at the BBA stand B20, situated right opposite the main entrance. For more information contact Phil Page, email: ppage@bba.star.co.uk

We have also approved a series of timber frame insulation systems and some of these clients are exhibiting at the show. Similarly we have expertise in assessing paints and wood stains suitable for use on joinery and timber cladding and fencing.

PRODUCTS SmartPly FR/FR Build OSB3 was developed in response to the Structural Timber Association’s (STA) “Design guide to separating distances during construction” for timber frame buildings above 600m2 total floor area. The panel is treated with flame retardant during the manufacturing process and designed to retain the normal woodworking characteristics of OSB3 rather than those of post treated alternatives. All products are manufactured using FSCcertified wood, with a fully audited chain of custody process in place at both SmartPly and Medite mills. The production facilities are local to the forest of origin minimizing the effect of transportation on the embodied energy of the products. The range of Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB products including the new product offerings are being exhibited on Stand D40 and Mike Harrison, Marketing Manager at Coillte Panel Products will be speaking about OSB innovation at the Toolbox Talks at Timber Expo. He will cover topics on what OSB is, how it is made, its performance characteristics, product applications and product innovation of SmartPly OSB.

Coillte Panel Products is part of Coillte, a leading natural resources company which owns and manages over 442,000 hectares of FSC® certified forest. Coillte Panel Products manufactures both highly regarded Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB products, which are synonymous with quality, choice and innovation. Coillte Panel Products places great importance on research and development. It focuses on investment in product advances, in order to keep its specifiers and end users at the forefront of the latest market developments. Product quality, performance and environmental credentials all combine under Coillte’s market-leading brands, Medite and SmartPly, providing reliability and reassurance to all sectors of the construction market. Website

The World of Wood at your Fingertips

The website involved a significant investment in terms of money and manhours, with design being a key element. “We really wanted a lot of ‘creative’ white space, and to reflect a contemporary look for 2013,” said TRADA marketing executive Olivia O’Sullivan. As well as the website’s new look design, there has also been an emphasis on improving functionality. Members using the site will find a wealth of information at their fingertips, with industry news on the homepage and TRADA publications organised in easily navigable categories under the heading of ‘Wood Information’. The fully searchable online catalogue includes case studies, Wood Information Sheets, Construction Briefings and much more. Members can also view all of our recent research as well as software tools like EC5Pro. Unwilling to rest on the laurels of past successes, relaxation is not on the agenda at TRADA, despite celebrating 80 years of timber expertise this year.

For those lucky enough to witness the grand unveiling of the new design at last year’s Timber Expo, the previous incarnation of the TRADA website may be just a distant memory. The website was launched in November to plaudits; with ‘brilliantly designed’ and ‘a mine of information’ being amongst the adjectives used to describe it. Additionally, it represents the first of many undertakings to bring TRADA into the digital age. Using the website as a springboard, TRADA will be even more actively engaged with social media, sharing news and information within the wider digital sphere, while simultaneously offering a further channel for members to tap into the TRADA library. TRADA’s presence on social media will reach an apex at this year’s Timber Expo where we will be tweeting live from the TRADA stand, answering questions and engaging with visitors. With this new investment in social channels, 2014 is going to be a bumper year for the timber industry’s digital profile and we hope you will join us online. With 243 million monthly users on Twitter alone there’s no better time to embrace social media. So what are you waiting for? FERMACELL – first name in the frame For more information visit: www.fermacell.co.uk email: fermacell-uk@xella.com

Fermacell gypsum fibreboard is manufactured to the highest standards of German engineering, it has a simple homogenous composition – recycled gypsum, cellulose fibres from post-consumer waste paper and water, with no added chemicals. All by-products and off cuts are fed back into the production cycle. Fermacell has been tested to European, UK and STA standards. Growing in popularity across the whole drywall and timber frame market in the UK, Fermacell Gypsum Fibreboards have been widely used across Europe for over 40 years. Fermacell has a Category 1 racking strength, replacing plywood and plasterboard solutions and with its inherent robustness, it enhances the structural stability of the building. Fermacell can be installed before the building envelope is complete and it has a class O fire and Class 1 surface spread of flame certification. Fermacell can help minimise the risk of ‘onsite’ fires by containing the flames within the building and reducing the risk of fire spreading to other structures – Fermacell features in the STA Code of Practice. What’s more, Fermacell’s superior loadholding strength lets you fix cupboards, shelves and radiators without the need for patressing and with our large format boards, joints can be kept to a minimum. Fermacell offers greater acoustic performance with fewer layers than other traditional materials, enabling slimmer partitions and simple party wall constructions. A single layer of 12.5mm fermacell, with no insulation to either side of a timber stud achieves Rw41dB. Fermacell gypsum fibreboards offer architects, installers and self builders all the benefits of solid blockwork with the speed and flexibility drywall, combined with improved impact, acoustic, fire, moisture and load hanging properties. Gary Carter, General Manager at Fermacell UK, says: “The innovative design and versatility of our products provides a wealth of benefits for both commercial and domestic timber frame projects, which we are looking forward to demonstrating at Timber Expo.”

SILVER SPONSOR > IWS FAST > TIMBER EXPO 2014

SILVER SPONSOR STAND: D63

FAST Timber Engineered Separating Floor for Timber Frame Currently the majority of separating floors for timber frame are constructed with ‘I’ or Metal Web joists with suspended ceilings beneath. The detailing for acoustic purposes can mean a deep floor build up that will include an acoustic floating floor with a depth of over 100mm in certain instances. Furthermore, in order to meet Part E (England & Wales) airborne sound insulation requirements (minimum 45 DnTw + Ctr), the acoustic floor and ceiling are critical to the performance, and mean that the use of shallow floating floors is very limited. Changes in 2010 to the Scottish Building Standards (Section 5), have increased the airborne requirements to 56dB (minimum value), which requires designers to typically build to achieve 60dB. The timber frame industry has struggled to achieve this and maintain a relative shallow build up. IWSFloor joists can be used in E-FT-2 make-up at 600 centres. • Minimises cold bridging • Accommodates wide tolerances on-site • Integral ceiling structure • Uses sustainable building materials • Does not require hangers or proprietary end details • Enables short lead times • Meets Part E (England and Wales) and Section 5 (Scotland) sound insulation requirements IWS Transit System The IWS-IMS is generally supplied as a combined cassette system, however for sites there this is not practical a kit form is available. The IWS-Transit System is pre-fabricated with both the floor and ceiling cassettes assembled off-site in one unit. • Greatly increasing speed onsite • Improving ease of installation • Reducing room required on-site for storage • Reducing waste • Maintaining build quality • Creates a safe working platform • Can be pre-insulated • No need to cut standard blocks (masonry solution) • Depth specific thermal block for nib coursing • No temporary bracing.

IWS FAST SEPARATING FLOORS IWS in partnership with Edinburgh Napier University and Icopal Monarfloor Acoustics have developed innovative separating floors for both timber frame and the first practical timber engineered separating floor for masonry construction, the FAST Timber Floor. FAST Timber Engineered Separating Floor for Masonry Currently the majority of separating floors for masonry are constructed with precast concrete planks with suspended ceilings beneath. This may require substantial foundations to support the load, valuable construction time is lost waiting for drying and curing of screeds, and there is a possibility of high thermal bridging and air leakage via the slab / wall interface. Furthermore, in order to meet Part E (England & Wales) airborne sound insulation requirements (minimum 45 DnTw + Ctr), the masonry precast plank must be a minimum 150mm with a density of 300Kg/m2, with a screed having a density of 80Kg/m2. The ceiling beneath must have a void of 150mm. This detail adds significant weight and volume of material, this together with their delivery and manoeuvring on site may cause issues given access limitations. Changes in 2010 to the Scottish Building Standards (Section 5), have increased the airborne requirements to 56dB (minimum value), which requires designers to typically build to achieve 60dB. The aforementioned masonry construction may not meet these new requirements without increasing slab depths. Through its several unique and innovative details the FAST® Timber Floor: • Minimises cold bridging • Accommodates wide tolerances on-site • Integral ceiling structure • Uses sustainable building materials • Does not require masonry hangers or proprietary end details • Enables short lead times • Meets Part E (England and Wales) and Section 5 (Scotland) sound insulation requirements

BRONZE SPONSOR STAND: X67

ISO-Chemie The technical requirements for energy efficient and long term building seals are increasing all the time. Our innovative product solutions have a positive effect on the energy balance of buildings, at the same time promoting a healthy internal climate. Factors such as airtightness, permanent movement, weather resistance, emissions free, thermal and acoustic insulation as well as humidity and fire protection are important properties of our building seals which conform to multinational standards. ISO-Chemie has a range of products which bring specific benefits when building with timber, or using timber components in construction. Not the least of which is overcoming large differential movement. Constantly improving and producing new innovative products is what we do. A good example on display at Timber Expo 2014 will be the new ISO-TOP WINFRAMER. This allows the windows and doors to be positioned in front of the internal wall so that they sit within the insulation layer, without the need for complex metal brackets which create non repeating thermal bridging. ISO-TOP WINFRAMER can support 200 kilos per linear metre, so even large Bi-Fold doors are not a problem. Any future replacement is also simplistic without excess renovation work as the window or door can be fixed directly into ISO-TOP WINFRAMER.

Based in Stratford upon Avon, RoofSpace Solutions was set up in January 2008 and delivers a Fabric First approach and roofing package from wall plate upwards with up to six units completed in a day.

SEE US AT STAND: F60 Our roof cassettes are designed to achieve U/values as low as 0.11W/ m2K within the panel without the requirement for under cloaking or additional insulating works onsite that come with other similar roofing systems on the market, the same philosophy is balanced with our timber spandrel panels with U/values for the walls as low as 0.23W/m2K. Timber is naturally low in thermal conductivity and an excellent insulator. It is 15 times better as an insulator than concrete, 400 times better than steel and 1770 times better than aluminium. A 25mm timber board has better thermal resistance than a 114mm brick wall.

The ‘RoofSpace I-Roof ™’ is an engineered timber-based, offsite manufactured roofing system. We generally install up to six units in one day saving approximately 2-3 weeks on the client’s build programme and are cost neutral against ‘traditional’ forms of construction.
