TIMBER EXPO 2014 < WELCOME / CONTENTS

Welcome... ...to the first show magazine of 2014 and one that contains some confirmed facts and figures on the 2013 event – the best attended and most successful so far – and also maps out the road ahead for this year’s event including the new BM TRADA Live Zone. The last quarter of 2013 saw an upswing in the amount of building materials ordered and confidence is slowly starting to return to the construction sector. This will be reflected in an expanded Timber Expo this year. The 2014 event is set to be a special one as we co-locate for the first time with W14. A show that will be familiar to many readers and brings the best of the UK joinery and furniture trade to the Birmingham NEC at the same time as Timber Expo. This provides a double whammy opportunity for those interested in virtually any aspect of timber. Timber Expo 2013 had an ambitious scope of content and this year’s event will be just as tightly focused. The BM TRADA Live Zone will provide a number of free surgeries and demonstrations geared to a range of timber issues including fire door testing and CE Marking. The Timber Buyers & Specifiers Forum is now an important aspect of the show and has become crucial for those wanting to make the most of their time at the show

and walk away with some solid business leads under their arm. We had 74 buyers and specifiers attending in 2013 from the likes of Asda, Morgan Sindall, Travis Perkins, Sir Robert McAlpine and Sainsbury’s. A ringing endorsement came with a 100% agreement on attendees to return this year. We are targeting over 100 Buyers participating in 2014. With constant rain and flooding being a part of many people’s world earlier in the year, flip to P24 for a timely piece on the role timber can play in flood mitigation and how a timber-framed structure can bring a viable and low carbon end to the misery of dredging living rooms on a more (and if climate change prediction is correct), painfully regular basis. Our usual features return, including a quick round up of some recent news you may have missed plus a spotlight selection of new show sponsors and exhibitors. Enjoy the read…

EXPO 2013 > TIMBER EXPO 2014

TIMBER EXPO AT THE CENTRE OF THE UK TIMBER INDUSTRY

Highlights of the 2013 seminar programme included:

Timber Expo 2013 was the most successful in the event’s three year history with record numbers of exhibitors & visitors. With the 2014 show quickly developing behind the scenes, here is a round up of what’s in store. Innovation and Inspiration – be part of the event The Timber Focus seminars are a key element of the show. The seminar programme will provide valuable learning and Timber Expo is again looking for true innovation represented by case studies featuring eye-catching design and build expertise. If you have a project that reflects this criteria and you would like to be considered to speak in the Timber Focus seminar programme, the event organisers will be interested to hear from you. Please contact Rupert Scott at: rscott@trada.co.uk

This year there will be two theatres dedicated to top quality external speakers covering eight themes. Although still in development the sessions will include subjects that went down well in 2013 including: • Innovation – especially where timber is pushing at the boundaries of design and build • Building performance – fabric first and energy efficient design • Two sessions on case studies from the Wood Awards 2014 appealing to architects and engineers • Training and skills development • EUTR – continuing development and impact. Timber Expo attracts international visitors from across Europe and as far afield as India, Africa and the South America – all in search of inspiration and new business opportunities.

See what our attendees have to say in our show video at: www.timber-expo.co.uk/ media/industry-news TIMBER FOCUS SEMINARS

• Architects and timber: Striking designs – the speaker line-up, featured the 2013 Gold Wood Award winning Bishop Edward King Chapel presented by Tim Marcot of Price and Myers and the Highly Commended, Festival House Tower of Love, designed by dRMM. • ‘A hint of madness in CLT’ presented by Gavin White, Structural Engineer for Ramboll UK – was extremely well received and generated excellent feedback. • ‘Life Cycle Tower’ an investigation into the commercial feasibility of a high-rise timber tower, presented by Andrew Lawrence, Associate Director at Arup really highlighted the possibilities of the multi-storey capabilities of cross laminated timber (CLT). Not only are the Timber Focus seminars an exceptional opportunity for architects and engineers to showcase outstanding work, the event presents a superb chance to network with a global audience. TRADA’s Rupert Scott said: “The new Seminar Programme format went down well with visitors and the chairmen all reported lively and engaging Q&A sessions because the sessions had great content and were delivered by people who knew their subject well.“

“The quality of enquiries that have come in since the show has been flabbergasting.” John Spittle England & Wales Sales Director, Wiehag

Last year Worldscape was the focal point of the exhibition. Conceived and designed by ATMOS Worldscape was the vision of architect Alex Haw with the core design principle of the world unified – collectively united at a single bench. This unmissable piece of timber design formed the visitor lounge. At the entrance to the event Nacho Marti’s, Expandable Surface System created an eye-catching welcome point to the show. Based on work undertaken with partners Jacob Bek – the Expandable Surface System seamlessly linked material with

geometry and structure in a: “morphogenetic bottom-up process, using 6.5mm birch plywood sheets.” The organisers also set out to ‘fire the imagination’ and showcase the huge possibilities of timber. Ramboll, Pryce & Myers and Enginuiti created what is affectionately known as ‘the giraffe’ by the TRADA team. This one installation, created out of plywood is inspired by a gridshell sculpture, and spread like a tree across the foyer and is now a familiar sight as part of the TRADA exhibition stand.

SHOWCASING THE BEST OF BRITISH Built for Success This year, Timber Expo will be co-locating with W14 – the trade show for the UK joinery and furniture sector on the 07 & 08 October 2014. “The real test of an event’s success are the re-bookings,” says Event Director Loretta Sales. “58% of exhibitors signed contracts at the 2013 show for the 2014 exhibition. In addition, a further 12 new companies, who visited the show have booked space and are now contracted.”

THE HIVE, WORCESTER PHOTO: HUFTON & CROW/WOOD AWARDS

The 2014 Wood Award’s shortlist will also be on show at Timber Expo. The national Wood Awards showcase excellence in wood design, architecture and construction and has ever-growing credibility within the design community. The UK’s premier timber awards will once again recognise outstanding design, craftsmanship and installation in wood that have taken place over the last 12 months.

The 2014 Wood Awards Call for Entries is now open. Visit: www.woodawards.com for full details.

David Venables, European Director of the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) and founding major sponsor said: “The Wood Awards’ role - to inform and inspire - is even more vital now than when the event was first created. Timber is increasing its share within the construction industry and is a major part of the materials pallet for furniture designers. These trends are set to continue as the real environmental benefits of using wood become more apparent. Our aim is to inspire as many people as we can to consider and use wood in their designs, and we encourage those who already do, to enter!”

“Timber Expo is the biggest showcase for Irish timber in the important UK market.”

Remember Timber Expo and all seminars are free to attend and visitors to the show will be able to see the full range of timber technologies and wood products available on the market, with a wide display of new and innovative applications for timber within the built environment. We continue to appeal to architects, engineers, clients, contractors, local authorities and specifiers looking for the latest timber and low carbon solutions.

TIMBER EXPO 2014 < PROTIMBER 2013

The second ProTimber industry summit took place at Timber Expo 2103 and saw a wide range of timber industry leaders focus discussions on the opportunities ahead for the timber sector in developing a clear and robust response to the UK Government’s Construction Strategy 2025.

PROTIMBER2013 Timber Accord Brings Rhythm to Industry Growth

The Summit was boosted by cross timber industry trade association support from BWF, CONFOR, TDCA, TIMCON, TRA, TRADA, TTF, UKSIPS, UKTFA (now the Structural Timber Association) Wood for Good, WPA, WWA and WPIF under the framework of the Timber Accord. Mark Wakeford, Managing Director of Stepnalls and advisor on the development of the Construction Strategy introduced ProTimber saying: “Business and the construction industry is changing so fast that a co-ordinated response is required by the timber sector especially as sustainability issues and the cost of energy keeps rising, the whole industry needs to act together to cope as there is a danger that the UK will lose out to the many talented overseas operators and companies.” Bring on BIMThe continual rise of BIM is providing a wealth of challenges but enormous opportunities. Concern was expressed by timber product manufacturers that BIM libraries are ‘popping up everywhere’ and it was confusing to know how best to engage. The Wood First Plus initiative was much supported by participants in the room as an open free focus for BIM data for timber products. For it to work best BIM must be used as a vehicle for collaboration before onsite work begins so the designer, contractor and engineer can get everything technically correct from the development phase onwards. “We should not underestimate the importance of the construction strategy,” said John White, Chief Executive of the TTF. “BIM and design data gives users the ability to spot technical problems early and provide a clearly defined route to

11

PROTIMBER SUMMIT 2013

the end-user’s needs on the right product for the application they require. But BIM is a means to an end, not an end in itself, so we must keep building on improving skills, producing better design data for BIM libraries and a better understanding on how building components are put together. That is smart construction.”

Reducing Carbon Emissions Much talk surrounded the energy consumption of buildings and product development plus how questions of embodied energy should be tackled. Here huge in-roads are being made into lifecycle analysis and the increased communication of data through initiatives such as Wood for Good’s Wood First Plus. Performance data on products such as timber windows and doors can be communicated clearly, demonstrating where and how customers can save money over the lifetime of the product, save CO2 and reduce time on the building site. When talk turned to improving trade the speakers and audience were in agreement that a better balance needs to be struck between import and export. The timber industry is in an exciting place and will become

TIMBER EXPO > NEC BIRMINGHAM > 07-08 OCTOBER 2014

even more appealing with increased investment in machinery, equipment, software and improved skills development. “The window sector has seen a 34% growth in imports from 2007-2012,” said Iain Mcllwee, Chief Executive of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF). “The timber industry is energetic and constantly moving but we need to find a rhythm to that so that its behaviour and culture takes better advantage of the huge opportunities available.” This will be helped by programmes such as Grown in Britain that will help kickstart more market development for homegrown timber and provide more raw material for UK plc. “Improving the energy consumption of existing non-domestic buildings is a key area in the government’s Construction Strategy 2025” said Rupert Scott, Marketing and Membership Manager for TRADA. “It also plays into the need for increasing rental/property values as developers consider the re-use of buildings such as offices and retail space for use as dwellings for example. Where timber can match other materials in terms of a complete service including design, manufacture, installation and even maintenance it will be well placed to grow market share in this sector, given its aesthetic appeal and environmental credentials.” Through continued collaboration and meaningful leadership, the Accord members (and industry associations individually) will be working together to prove that timber has enormous low carbon benefits, a raft of dynamic high performance products and via improved BIM data will contribute in helping make the UK Government’s Construction Strategy 2025 commitments a reality.

INGENIOUS HARDWOOD BAUBUCHE

BauBuche includes boards and beams for structural timber construction as well as panels for furniture and interior design. With its exceptionally high strength BauBuche allows structures with significantly slimmer dimensions, compared to softwood materials. The high surface quality makes BauBuche ideally suited for visible construction elements. And the cost-efficient manufacturing technology places structures using BauBuche at the same price level as conventional softwood structures.

For more information visit: www.pollmeier.com

Wood as a building material has recently been experiencing a well-deserved revival. Its versatility as a material has long been known but its significance as a renewable resource has only been re-discovered in recent years. Until now almost exclusively softwoods were used in timber construction. To process hardwoods as building material used to be too complicated and too expensive. At Pollmeier, we have changed that. With the aid of applied science we were able to develop a completely new process technology, which allows us to economically produce top-quality laminated veneer lumber from European beech for structural applications. We call it BauBuche and we use only raw materials from local and sustainably managed forests in its production. The tree is rotary peeled in one of the most modern production facilities in Europe and transformed into a high-tech material with hardly any loss in value of the material. This is carried out in production line precision: on the one side a whole tree trunk is fed in, on the other side out comes BauBuche. Sustainability, innovation, aesthetics and cost-efficiency come together beautifully in BauBuche.

THE WORLD OF WOOD AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

The website involved a significant investment in terms of money and manhours, with design being a key element. “We really wanted a lot of ‘creative’ white space, and to reflect a contemporary look for 2013,” said TRADA marketing executive Olivia O’Sullivan. As well as the website’s new look design, there has also been an emphasis on improving functionality. Members using the site will find a wealth of information at their fingertips, with industry news on the homepage and TRADA publications organised in easily navigable categories under the heading of ‘Wood Information’. The fully searchable online catalogue includes case studies, Wood Information Sheets, Construction Briefings and much more. Members can also view all of our recent research as well as software tools like EC5Pro. Unwilling to rest on the laurels of past successes, relaxation is not on the agenda at TRADA, despite celebrating 80 years of timber expertise this year.

For those lucky enough to witness the grand unveiling of the new design at last year’s Timber Expo, the previous incarnation of the TRADA website may be just a distant memory. The website was launched in November to plaudits; with ‘brilliantly designed’ and ‘a mine of information’ being amongst the adjectives used to describe it. Additionally, it represents the first of many undertakings to bring TRADA into the digital age. Using the website as a springboard, TRADA will be even more actively engaged with social media, sharing news and information within the wider digital sphere, while simultaneously offering a further channel for members to tap into the TRADA library. TRADA’s presence on social media will reach an apex at this year’s Timber Expo where we will be tweeting live from the TRADA stand, answering questions and engaging with visitors. With this new investment in social channels, 2014 is going to be a bumper year for the timber industry’s digital profile and we hope you will join us online. With 243 million monthly users on Twitter alone there’s no better time to embrace social media. So what are you waiting for? A number of the innovative products will be showcased at Timber Expo including Knauf Aquapanel Exterior, an exterior cladding system which is ideal for use on timber-framed and timber-battened structures. The board is mechanically fixed to the framework and the system build up is then suitable to receive a render, paint or further external cladding finishes. Knauf Brio Dry Screed Panels offer many real advantages over traditional wet screeds and chipboard floors such as better stability, the speed and ease of installation, and higher quality. They can also take high loads and yet retain their elasticity. And with a high thermal conductivity, Knauf Brio works well with underfloor heating systems. There will also be the opportunity to find out more about Knauf Readymix Plasters. These plasters have a high polymer content that not only enables them to flex with the building without cracking, but also reduces humidity in the building during construction as they have far lower water content than traditional internal plasters.

For more information visit: www.knauf.co.uk

The ideal render carrier board Knauf Aquapanel Exterior is a cement board that’s an ideal substrate for directly applied render finishes and other cladding, making it the perfect partner to timber frame and SIP construction. It can be curved down to one metre radius with no impact on structural performance. Walls and soffits of any shape can be made weather tight quickly. It’s easy to score and snap and needs no pre drilling, making it quick to install on site. Knauf Aquapanel Exterior is BBA certified, accepted by the NHBC and approved by LABC and Premier Guarantee. TIMBER & FLOOD PROTECTION > TIMBER EXPO 2014

TIMBER & FLOOD PROTECTION Could timber frame solve Britain’s flooding conundrum? TRADA believe so & have a range of guidance & support to offer. As the floodwater recedes from the south of England, the debate has raged, yet again on whether changes to building regulations in regards to flooding could have saved lives, homes and, according to the Association of British Insurers’ latest report, around £426 million worth of insurance claims in the last month. An interesting question, which we considered after the major floods in 2007, is whether timber frame would provide a major contribution to solving this conundrum. These arguments are not without merit of course; more sensible planning restrictions around floodplains could easily have saved Britain tens of billions in insurance claims over the years, but is improved planning always a feasible prospect? There is no doubt that a change to building regulations would assist

flood mitigation enormously, but for cities such as Hull where 95% of properties are below sea-level, a change in building regulations would only have an impact if the entire city was redeveloped. Another potential solution which has been discussed is the implementation of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS), an attempt to replicate natural water runoff systems around new constructions. However with the recently announced setback to Defra’s proposed legislation making SUDS compulsory in new developments, many are looking to alternative methods of flood mitigation. The Department for Communities and Local Government’s (CLG’s) guidance which was published after the 2007 floods made a number of suggestions which should be taken into consideration when granting planning permission for new developments.

Timber has been used in partially submerged structures for centuries

In this document, the CLG defined the main types of flood mitigation: Flood avoidance: Constructing a building and its surrounds in such a way as to avoid it being flooded. Flood resistance: Constructing a building in such a way to prevent floodwater entering it and damaging its fabric. Flood resilience: Constructing a building in such a way that although floodwater may enter its impact is reduced (no permanent damage or loss of structural integrity). Floor repairable: Constructing a building in such a way that although floodwater enters, elements that are damaged can be easily repaired or replaced. The ABI also produced their own report in the aftermath of the 2007 summer floods. They drew up a hierarchy of ‘choices for adaption’ to mitigate flood damage.

07-08 OCTOBER 2014 < NEC BIRMINGHAM < TIMBER EXPO

TIMBER EXPO 2014 < TIMBER & FLOOD PROTECTION

Typically, timber lends itself best to avoidance strategy, but as long as allowances are made for expansion when wet, there is nothing preventing timber construction from being flood resilient

They recommend the following steps be taken when planning a development in a high flood risk area: Can site/properties be located outside of the flood plain? If not... Can properties be located in the lowest flood risk areas? If not... Can occupied areas be raised above flood heights? If not... Are flood defences feasible/ cost effective? If not... Identify relevant property resilience options and examine alternative flood alleviation measures. If the assumption is made that the first two steps (locating the site outside the flood plain or in low risk areas) are unfeasible, as is the case with many cities in England built close to rivers, then the next step is raising the occupied areas above flood heights. This is a technique which has been adopted in many flood prone areas on the continent (such as Maasbommel in Holland which is famed for its ‘floatable houses’) and is a technique which could easily be implemented in Britain too.

As suggested in TRADA’s Construction Briefing, post and beam timber frame construction could present the perfect flood avoidance strategy for British buildings. In a way not dissimilar to the floating houses in Maasbommel, the Construction Briefing suggested raising the ground floor of the house using post and beam construction, making the structure safe from flooding while simultaneously providing cost-effective car parking underneath. Timber is ideal for avoidance strategies such as this given how well it can sit atop pile foundations, raising it above flood height. It can also be a useful material in flood resilience. Despite a degree of stigma attached to timber when it comes to waterproofing, it isn’t a coincidence that timber has been used in partially submerged structures for centuries. Piers and groynes are testament to the strength of timber as a construction material. Although timber was not given too much attention in the CLG guidance (OSB was the only timber product and rather predictably, performed poorly) hundreds of years of marine application have taught us that if temporarily submerged in water, timber will maintain its integrity, not lose strength and will even return to its original size once dry.

TIMBER EXPO > NEC BIRMINGHAM > 07-08 OCTOBER 2014

23

Typically, timber lends itself best to avoidance strategy, but as long as allowances are made for expansion when wet, there is nothing preventing timber construction from being flood resilient. Although there are a number of positives to using timber in high flood risk areas, it is not without its faults. The safety of a building’s occupants - rather than its contents - will always be paramount during a flood. It is therefore recommended that windows and doors below flood height be built from materials less susceptible to a change in size when wet so as to avoid trapping the residents in a building should they absorb water and in extreme cases, may expand to a point where they no longer open. There are pros and cons to the use of timber in areas of high flood risk, but for the most part, timber remains a viable and crucially, environmentally friendly alternative to other flood mitigation strategies. And for those people who are dredging their living rooms for what must feel like the tenth time this decade, a raised, timber-framed structure must surely be a more appealing prospect than putting their faith in flood defences which have otherwise been largely ineffectual.

Flooding in Britain has been a very emotive topic for the past decade and a half, and in 2009, TRADA published two Construction Briefings entitled Flooding: The Background and Flood Resilient Construction: A summary of the CLG Guidance. Usually available only to members, TRADA has made both Construction Briefings on flooding available free of charge to all. Flooding: The Background Flood Resilient Construction: A Summary of the CLG Guidance TRADA has also published a Wood Information Sheet on Timber frame design for flood-prone sites available free to TRADA members. Timber Industry Accord Dismay at Housing Standards Review In the Government’s response to the Environmental Audit Committee Report on the Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) and Housing Standards Review, the Government has rejected the Committee’s recommendation that the CSH assessment standard on sustainable construction materials should be maintained and developed. Instead, it suggests the construction industry should take forward its own voluntary, self-policed standards. Speaking on behalf of the Timber Industry Accord, Iain McIlwee, British Woodworking Federation Chief Executive, said: “Cutting the Code for Sustainable Homes and leaving a void relating to material choice is an utterly retrograde step. Timber for example is one material that can help us meet the carbon reduction objectives of the Industrial Strategy for Construction and European targets for reducing embodied carbon, but this still needs to be driven home through regulation. Reliance on voluntary,

self-policed standards is a cop out and will leave us lagging behind the rest of Europe. Today’s Government response to the Environmental Audit Committee’s report is at odds with itself, referencing many national and international assessment models which are in place, before highlighting Environmental Product Declarations that are bringing clarity. It says the Government did not consider that there was sufficient evidence to suggest the need for a Building Regulation or national standard on sustainable materials – this, we believe, is more a case of not wanting to see it, simply in the rush to deliver against deregulation targets.” In a letter to the Prime Minister sent by the BWF on behalf of the Timber Accord, Iain McIlwee spelled out the unintended consequences of the changes being considered. customers the Falklands Islands Government consisted of a total of 20 houses configured in 10 blocks of 2 and made up of 3 x 3 bedroom and 17 x 2 bedroom dwellings. The timber frame kits were shipped in a total of 32 steel containers loaded at Scotframe in Inverurie and transported to Tilbury Docks for storage and subsequent shipping, via South America to the Falklands. The kits will be used by Morrisons to build three three-bedroom houses and 17 two-bedroom dwellings. Scotframe marketing manager Peter Hall said the company supplied timber kits to the islands every year, but had never received such a large single order before. The company has supplied 40 timber kits to the Falklands in the past five years. Shipping timber frame kits from the UK has become accepted as a preferred build route in the Falklands as the lack of forests on the Falklands is a major hurdle to any domestic timber frame manufacturing plant being established there. Scientific studies have shown that several tree species could be suitable for commercial planting in the Falklands, including Radiata Pine. Source: www.scotframe.co.uk

Investment in Timber Essential say CONFOR Speaking in The Scotsman, Chief Executive of the Confederation of Forest Industries (CONFOR), Stuart Goodall believes that the Scottish wood industries are ready to thrive.

The main part of the facility will be a glulam-framed and glazed structure which is planned to eventually become a living green wall covered in plants and be the largest of its kind in Europe. The building itself will be 42 metres in height, 125 metres long and 35 metres wide. It will feature a glass walkway and visitor centre. Once operational in 2016, the Leeds City Council said that the facility will save around £200 million over 25-year life of its contract with Veolia, as compared to sending the waste to landfill. The plant has also been designed to be CHP ready, with opportunities to link the facility to heat users in the Aire Valley are being investigated by Leeds City Centre. The council added that the facility will help the city to achieve its long-term target of recycling more than 60% of its waste. Source: http://newsfeed. leedsvirtualnewsroom.co.uk

BSW Boosts Graduate Management Training BSW Timber has launched a graduate management training programme to support young people into getting management positions within the firm. The two-year scheme has been designed to coach and prepare graduates for positions including production supervisor, production manager and mill manager. Simon Brooks who graduated from the University of Sheffield with a BSc in Biochemistry and Microbiology in

2009, and Jonathon Fry, who graduated from The National School of Forestry with an MSc in Forest Ecosystem Management in March 2012, are the first to benefit from the scheme. The pair will be based at different BSW saw mills throughout the UK, including Carlisle, Dalbeattie, Boat of Garten and Fort William, learning about the day-to-day management of the mills and the importance of quality standards. They will attend leadership training courses alongside other supervisors and managers from the BSW Group, giving them the opportunity to meet with others and share their ideas for the business. Mr Brooks said: “The BSW Timber Management Training Programme presents an excellent opportunity for me to implement the knowledge and skills I gained in formal education whilst continuing to learn the ropes of management. Combining work and training will no doubt be beneficial, as I seek to apply new skills and learn from those already in the management team.” Barry Carruthers, group training manager for BSW, said: “It’s the knowledge and expertise of the people behind the business that make BSW Timber what it is today, and we’re committed to investing in promising business talent. We welcome Simon and Jonathon on board to further their careers within BSW, and look forward to continuing the scheme for graduates in the future.” Source: www.bsw.co.uk

TIMBER EXPO > NEC BIRMINGHAM > 07-08 OCTOBER 2014

“As well as supporting almost 40,000 jobs and adding around £1.6 billion to the economy annually, the forestry and timber sector is making a significant contribution to meeting Scotland’s world-leading climate change targets.

In addition to the obvious environmental benefits of trees soaking up carbon, there are other, perhaps less obvious, advantages – carbon is stored in wood products and wood is an extremely energy efficient building material. The energy needed to produce a tonne of concrete to the point of use is five times that of sawn softwood, glass needs six times more energy and steel 24 times more. Also, when wood comes to the end of its life, it can be burned as a fuel – the ultimate renewable material. Scotland’s wood-manufacturing sector is a success story, delivering growth during the downturn and exporting to the rest of the UK and beyond. CONFOR research shows the growth in UK wood production over recent decades, centred in Scotland, is reducing annual imports to the value of over £1bn. Whether we have an independent or a devolved

Scottish Government after September 2014, manufacturing with a strong focus on co-operation between policy-makers and manufacturers must be supported to ensure the sector evolves, innovates and flourishes in a competitive world, where the UK remains the ninth-biggest manufacturing nation. It is also vital that the sector has sustainable supplies of wood for the future. Forestry and wood processing is a classic long-term business, making decisions based on 15-20 year cycles. If we are to guarantee major on-going investment in a low-carbon, Scottish success story, we need to protect and expand our forestry resource. The best days for Scotland’s forestry and wood sector are still ahead of us. Rural jobs, carbon reduction, income to manage our forests and a stronger, more balanced and more sustainable economy are there for the taking if we support this vital sector. However, the support must be cross-party and it must continue, whatever happens on 18 September. Source: www.scotsman.com

Kingsgate House Scores UK Sustainable First Work has now completed on Kingsgate House, a seven-storey residential project in West London that is the first major construction project in the world to achieve PEFC Project Certification. Located on the King’s Road, Kingsgate House provides 43 affordable residential units. Designed by Horden Cherry Lee Architects (HCL) and built by main contractor Willmott Dixon, the structure contains 1092m3 of PEFC-certified cross laminated timber (CLT) supplied by KLH UK. The site area is approximately 1345m2 (0.13 hectares) and the striking design is set to be an

exemplar sustainable building, achieving Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4, with the PEFC - certified solid wood acting as a natural, low carbon and renewable alternative to steel and concrete.

timber used on the project is from legal and sustainable sources in line with the Government’s timber procurement policy. “The project was a success for Willmott Dixon because their staff were really committed to making it work,” said Alasdair McGregor, BM TRADA Technical Development Manager. “From the outset they set up a good system for recording timber deliveries to site and then applied sufficient resource to investigating areas where there were problems, such as missing information on some supplier delivery notes. Overall, it was an excellent performance and the company should be very pleased with the outcome.”

Project Chain of Custody certification recognises that not all parties involved in specific projects are certified and has been developed in recognition that the standard Chain of Custody model does not work with one-off activities such as construction projects. “The Project Certification of this major construction project is a global first for PEFC,” said Alun Watkins, who heads up PEFC in the UK. “We are very excited about it and feel the lessons learned and the promotion of the project will be valuable in moving Project Certification forward everywhere. The majority of solid wood solutions such as CLT and glulam are from PEFC-certified origin and schemes using these materials find PEFC Project Certification readily achievable.”

At Kingsgate House 100% of wood products supplied are certified as ‘legal and sustainable’ and the scheme achieved 96.3% PEFCcertified timber by volume. The Project Certificate was presented to Willmott Dixon at a special event at the Building Centre, London by BM TRADA and PEFC UK. After a detailed and rigorous auditing process of the Kingsgate supply chain carried out by BM TRADA, the Project Certification status provides robust independent assurance that all

News in Briefs The Structural Timber Association’s (STA) Design Guide to Separating Distances During Construction Product Paper 4 - has been updated to give more tested and approved wall and floor options for architects, developers and timber frame manufacturers, looking to mitigate the fire risk on large timber frame developments in urban areas. Successful fire testing by the timber frame and engineered flooring supply chain has underpinned the results.

Timber Packaging & Pallet Confederation see storms and floods that affected the UK to compound pressure on the forest-based industries. TIMCON general secretary Stuart Hex said: “Widespread damage caused by the recent storms and flooding means we are anticipating much stronger demand than usual for fencing and construction timber. This will potentially have further impact on the availability of timber to the pallets and packaging industry and as well as other sectors.”

Work has begun on the UK’s largest development of passive houses. Sustainable property developer CITU will deliver 107 homes Little Kelham, Sheffield. The homes use the latest in insulation technology, triple-glazed windows, balanced energy recovery ventilation and are heated mostly using ‘passive’ energy from electrical equipment, body heat and solar gains. The scheme’s first homes will be ready for occupation this summer. Prices will range from £115,000 to £280,000.

Stewart Milne Timber Systems, has reported new business wins worth more than £14 million. The timber systems expert has also experienced a noteworthy year-onyear increase in quotations, up 50% on a 24-month rolling average in

August 2013 and 30% in September 2013. New business for Stewart Milne Timber Systems came from across the UK, with notable wins in Devon, Cambridgeshire, Greenwich and Oxfordshire. These include a number of housing developments, one of which will deliver 5,000 zero carbon homes, a care home and a student accommodation project.

Donaldson Timber Engineering (DTE) has signed a licensing agreement with Charcon Construction Solutions to sell its modular roofing Moduroof system. The deal also involves DTE providing roof trusses for the projects it supplies with Moduroof. Moduroof is fully manufactured offsite at Charcon’s factory in Barnsley ready for rapid onsite erection. The roof can be externally finished in the factory with fascia, soffits, bargeboards and gable brick-slips, and even, if necessary, a ‘room in the roof’. DTE Managing Director Jonathan Fellingham said: “Given the recent upturn in demand for newbuild housing and the related supply squeeze, Moduroof can provide a simple, safe and extremely fast installation.”

The European Sustainable Tropical Timber Coalition (STTC), an initiative of the Dutch governmentsupported public partnership IDH (the Sustainable Trade Initiative) is now in action. The Coalition was formed in response to falling European tropical sales. These worsened during the recession and there are fears the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) may now exacerbate the decline. The STTC aims to boost sales by raising awareness of the availability of third-party certified sustainable tropical timber. It will work with national and local government, trade organisations, NGOs and the private sector to increase certified material’s share of the European tropical market to 30% by 2015. It currently stands at 11%. A summit is planned in 2014 on progress.

Wood for Good has launched the largest online lifecycle assessment (LCA) database of any UK construction material. The free-touse database has been designed to aid the specification of timber products in construction schemes. It contains environmental performance information on major timber products from cradle to grave. David Hopkins, project director at Wood for Good, said: “Timber products have a low-embodied energy and carbon rating, our conversations with specifiers revealed that while most are already convinced of this, they often lack the empirical evidence to endorse its use with their clients. Through the launch of this resource, and its ongoing development, we aim to position timber as the first choice material for sustainable building.”

Whilst signs for economic improvement and market growth are certainly encouraging, the jobs market has been growing rapidly for the last six months and now moving at a far greater pace. Those that engage the most effective recruitment, retention strategies and expertise are in an ideal position to take advantage of market growth. The key issue this year is already the acute skills shortage. In this new candidate-led market it is the passive job seeker that needs to be attracted – the talented people who have been keeping their heads below the parapet for job security and are now ready to move for other career motivations. ARV Solutions role is to source the best talent for clients and open up the best opportunities available for the talented people seeking a role in the industry. With a huge database of candidates and contacts to work from and with ten years expertise under our belts, we have a growing team of some of the most experienced professional and ethical people in recruitment and are ideally placed to ensure your business stays ahead in the talent race. ARV Solutions is the sole recruitment agency member of TRADA, the STA and MPBA. Promoting careers in the industry is very much in our long term mutual interest.

ECOCURVES (a member of Jagram Group) is one of the largest and best known manufacturers of glulam timber arches in Europe.

Our main advantage is total flexibility – from 1 to 10.000 pieces of nontypical shape and dimension. Our products undergo strict quality control in laboratories and are accredited – ISO, TÜV, FSC 100% and PEFC. EcoCurves are manufactured from high-quality European coniferous timber cut into layers and laminated in a powerful hydraulic press to form their final shape. In the last 20 years we have tested most of the world’s leading glue, machinery and tools, adding our own patented solutions. EcoCurves factory computers will turn the most elaborate shapes into products in just 40 minutes. If you need a bespoke solution – we are a natural choice. Modern machinery and the use of high-quality raw materials enables us to produce structural arches with a span of 19m, characterised by high strength and quality in accordance with standard EN 14080 - GL 24 C. During the manufacture process we use premium grade timber, which is selected and dried to 18% humidity. It is then sliced into thin laths with thickness ranging from 2.8 to 45mm by precise saws (allowing for 1.15mm waste on 9mm batten) and producing a glue-optimised surface 88% yield. Glue spread is also CNC-optimised and we only use products from world leading certified suppliers. We shape curves with high frequency hydraulic presses achieving 12 kg/cm2. Planing and drilling is made by 5-axis CNC Shaper and digital centres producing 4000 units/shift. EcoCurves range includes: construction arches, timber glulam components, walkways, carports, bikeports (bike sheds), smoking and bus sheds, bridges, terrace roofs, swimming pool covers. We will be happy to advise you and give a free quote.

OUR MAIN ADVANTAGES ARE: • DURABILITY EcoCurves are extremely durable, they can be pressure treated and then used outside without any further maintenance. • EXCLUSIVENESS glulam arches will enhance any standard looking construction with an exclusive appearance. • ECOLOGY our products are very ecological and leave fewer footprints than other materials. Moreover, glulam arches are biodegradable and recyclable. • RECYCLABLE the manufacturing process has minimal impact on environment and 99% of waste material is reused in a closed circle. • TOOLING EASE EcoCurves are easy to work with, even with common tools – their surface can be treated with all kinds of paints or preservatives. • ACCURACY our glulam curves are drilled and cut to length and shape when needed with modern CNC machinery.

ROTHO BLAAS ALU HIDDEN BRACKETS The need to supply hidden timber-to-timber and timber-to-concrete fastenings is growing among timber structure manufacturers. The main reasons for this are linked to external appearance and to fire resistance requirements (junctions with metal elements exposed to fire feature low fire load ratings). This has led Rotho Blaas to develop a complete range of T-shaped hidden brackets for all structural applications ranging from small structures such as gazebos (ALUMINI) to the more problematic middle-sized structures, such as the roofs of residential buildings (ALUMIDI) all the way to the large-sized structure sector such as industrial buildings (ALUMAXI). ALUMINI Their size has been specifically designed in order that they can be used easily on narrow joists or wooden elements with small base dimensions. ALUMIDI The key features of this joint system are versatility of application both with wood and concrete via the use of smooth dowels in pre-drilled holes or of self-tapping dowels. It’s possible to purchase 2.2 m long brackets that can be cut to the size needed.

SIOO - Leaders in Wood Protection The protection of wood is a significant challenge and it is a bold claim to be the technology leader in a field with many players and products.

35

BRONZE SPONSOR STAND: D52

Despite the wide choice, the customer very often finds that the chosen solution has given short life protection with inadequate resistance to the formation of algae, fungus, spore and rot, discolouring and splintering of the timber surface and poor ultimate protection of people, animals and the environment. Sioo are leaders because we have approached the challenge differently. We have discarded old solutions with their harmful biocides and drawn on nature to provide a natural highly effective process for protecting wood of all types. Water-based and using silicon and other natural ingredients, the result is a solution that gives long life, a beautiful natural surface and which is completely friendly to people and the environment. Increasingly specified by world leading architects and end users because of its unique combination sustainability and aesthetically pleasing appearance, Sioo is the next generation and modern safe approach to wood protection.
