LETTER FROM THE CO-EDITOR IN CHIEFS

Dear Readers, Hello and happy summer from the TigerTrends staff! We are so proud of everyone for making it through another school year, and we can’t wait to see everyone in the fall and release some new updates for TigerTrends (stay tuned!) The theme for this month’s book is “Blossoming”. In a continuation of our March theme, “Good Vibrations”, we want to emphasize the spirit of growth that comes with the season of spring! Everyone at TigerTrends is so excited to continue to grow and blossom as a publication in the future, and we hope that this issue inspires you to embrace this summer as an opportunity for personal growth and rejuvenation. Everyone has worked so hard this year: now it’s time to take a break and refresh! This edition draws inspiration from the cottagecore aesthetic: inspired by summer nostalgia and the beauty of nature. We are excited for you to see the different interpretations of the theme from our styling team and hope they inspire some summer fits for the gram as we enter this three month period filled with adventures and new experiences. As always, we are so grateful for our wonderful TigerTrends team and our loyal readers for helping this edition come to life. You all help us to embody the TigerTrends motto that anyone can fashion. Have a relaxing summer and we’ll see you in the fall! Be sure to follow @tiger.trends on Instagram for updates and summer style inspo!

"Believe it or not, this was a university in Athens and not a map from Fallout. We stole some towels and corded phones from our hotel and rode electric scooters on the morning we were supposed to fly out of Greece to shoot here on our last day. Didn’t see a single soul, besides the homeless person here and there sleeping on the steps. Could have something to do with the fact that the students were all out protesting that day. Or that it was 7 AM. Absolutely insane spot that I only discovered because I was doing a research project on Greek higher education."

2020, a spotlight was shone on different aesthetic microgroups, made possible through pandemic reliance on social media to perpetuate cultural shift and exchange globally. As a reaction to the emotionally tumultuous conditions onset by the disastrous turn of the decade, Cottagecore rose to prominence as a representation of a lifestyle that is both escapist and minimalist, an aesthetic catchall for our contemporary concerns. Hidden behind pastel softness is a frustration with the state of the world and a subsequent solution. While drawing inspiration from feminine fashions and hobbies attributed to the rural European countryside, Cottagecore embraces the domestic, romanticizing craft, cooking, and the outdoors. In a sense, it rewrites home, encouraging domestic labor for the fun of it and the self-sufficiency of the individual, as opposed to a duty or a service to another. Of course, few people have the means to abandon their modern lives for an escapist fantasy, most participants borrow elements

J O U R N A L I S T: S I E R R A S T E R N ' 2 4 EDITOR: APRIL DONG '24

of this lifestyle, baking more, consuming less, and exploring the self and companionship in new ways, decentering the role of commodity and industry in our relationships. Hereinlies Cottagecore’s political connotations: a dissatisfaction with industrial life, an appreciation of simple, sustainable production, and reverence for the traditionally feminine. This does not mean, however, that Cottagecore is solely reserved for women; it simply reveres an often belittled feminine tradition of community and simple pleasures, positioning this world as a foil to a harsh and masculinized industrial landscape. Thus the traditional is made radical. In a world where alternative styles of dress are often watered down and depoliticized versions of aesthetically distinct subcultures, Cottagecore offers up a lifestyle that is not the result of quiet cultural appropriation.

M AY 2 0 2 2

That being said, the aesthetic does have pitfalls of its own. Rooted in white European culture, it calls upon Western garments and traditions. Additionally, there has never been a concrete period in time where rural women have had the agency and independence from masculinity that women are afforded today, and even today that freedom has limits. There is a fine line between revering proximity to nature and romanticizing a rural lifestyle that in today’s world connotes its own set of unique struggles, particularly when Cottagecore pieces are being bought via fast fashion outlets. Additionally, while cutting consumption can be beneficial on the individual level, the Cottagecore lifestyle is incompatible with industry, cities, and the current state of labor. While we may choose to shop less and experience more, there is a point where the fantasy must end, and we all must return to school, or work, or any number of contemporary obligations.

There is nothing appropriative, however, with wearing a picnic dress, or learning to quilt, or pressing flowers, just as there is nothing wrong with seeking calm refuge from a chaotic social climate. Cottagecore only starts to become compromised when these tenants are violated—when simple, sustainable fashion becomes an excess of fast-made clothing, when natural beauty is compromised by overvisiting and left-behind waste. Cottagecore, in the simplest terms, seeks to find happiness from outside the cycle of consumption. Where I live in California, the water shortage makes it difficult and expensive to sustain most flowers and grasses. Why should I not enjoy the shrubs, cacti, and wild flowers that thrive there naturally? In my opinion, the cottage can be left out of the equation. To be sustainable and successful, Cottagecore must be adaptable, to anyone and any place.

"It is fascinating how wearing clothes that are different than usual and sitting among the wild grasses can transport us to distant times and places. I listened to the natural world, inhabited and reacquainted myself with my body, and felt at peace."

"Although I did not post pictures or videos of my experience online, people participating in the Cottagecore trend did, and they found a community of people who also wishes to reconnect with nature." "I understand how they feel, for nature heals."

"Perhaps Cottagecore is a call for us to find a way to find a balance between relaxing in nature and staying engaged with technology. Perhaps it is a part of a trend where nature and technology are merging"
