LETTER FROM THE CO-EDITORS IN CHIEF

Dear Readers, Welcome to a new year and a new chapter for TigerTrends! We would like to introduce ourselves as the new co-Editors in Chief, Kate Van Dusen and Adrian Moreira-Behrens. We are so excited for this opportunity to grow TigerTrends as both a publication and an on-campus presence, and to carry on the tradition of the magazine that Camille and everyone before her established. The theme for this month’s edition is “Good Vibrations”. As we move into the warmer spring months and as COVID restrictions are slowly being lifted, we wanted to create a book that encapsulates a sense of positivity and hope for the future. The last few years have been tough for everyone, and our hope is that the Good Vibrations issue highlights the positive energy that can be found in music, fashion, and art even in hard times. We hope that it inspires you to finish the school year on a positive note and to see art and fashion as a force for good in your life! As we have transitioned into new leadership at TigerTrends, we would first of all like to thank Camille for all of the hard work and dedication that she put into the book during her time as Editor in Chief. TigerTrends truly would not be the same without all the love and care that Camille showed during her time at the helm, and we can only hope to carry on that legacy. Thank you so much for everything, Camille!

Thank you so much for reading this edition of TigerTrends. We all thoroughly enjoyed creating it for you and we hope that it provides you with inspiration to find the good vibes in your life and all around you. We hope to see you at some of our on-campus events soon; stay tuned and follow our Instagram @tiger.trends for updates! TigerTrends love, Your new EICs, Kate Van Dusen and Adrian Moreira-Behrens

MARCH 2022

We’d also like to thank everyone on the TigerTrends team, especially our new members who brought such life and fresh energy and ideas to this book, and our Executive Board members who have been incredibly supportive and helpful as we transition into our new roles as co-Editors in Chief.

" Implementing a

short routine will help reduce stress

"

After a long day, it’s standard not to want to do anything but lay in your bed and go to sleep. But there is one self-care element that is crucial and will benefit you in the long run, a skincare routine. It does not need to be 10 steps nor 20 minutes long. Implementing a short routine will help reduce stress and it’ll leave your skin looking renewed.

Step 1: Cleanser (morning and night) Cleansing removes all the dirt that has accumulated while you go throughout your day or during the night. You should always wash your face when you wake up and before you go to bed. If you have oily skin, you may want a stronger foaming cleanser that will remove the oils from your face. If you have dry skin, a more hydrating cleanser will help.

SERUM

Step 2: Serum (Night and possibly in the morning) There are quite a lot of serums on the market but choosing the right one for you depends on your skin and what it needs. Serums are considered treatments and there are so many different types. For those new to skincare, an exfoliator may be the best thing to start with, which removes dead skin cells and dirt from underneath the skin. This will help remove and prevent acne. Another type of serum that will improve your skin is niacinamide. It works to help control oils in your skin, reduces redness and acne scars, helps with hyperpigmentation, and refines your pores.

MOISTURIZE Step 3: Moisturizer (Morning and night)

Moisturizers are necessary for all skin types, including oily skin. Moisturizers are essential to the skin and will leave your skin feeling amazing. They have so many benefits including smoothing the skin, fixing your moisture barrier, and improving overall appearance.

SUNSCREEN Step 4: Sunscreen (Morning)

Sunscreen is perhaps the most important step in a skincare routine as the steps before this will be useless if you do not protect your skin against harmful UV rays. There is a myth that melanated skin types do not need sunscreen, but this is false!

ULTIMATELY

not only will a skincare routine leave you physically feeling refreshed, but it also improves your mental health. It improves your feelings of self-worth, adds stability to your life, and helps reduce stress which is something we all need with our hectic college lives. Once you begin this routine, your skin and mind will thank you.

MARCH 2022

It’s cherry blossom season! Soon enough, walkways on campus will be populated with delicate pink canopies, hordes of tourists, and way too many photoshoots. Last spring, I was heartbroken by how quickly the scene faded. Decaying wisteria littered the entryway to my room, so I tucked a few flowers into my journal before they became limp and lost their color. I still have those pressed flowers as reminders of my first semester on campus. Seeing the same blooms crop up again makes me feel nostalgic, anticipating the paradise campus will become. But it also makes me think about how it will be over before I have a chance to look up from classwork. The blooming period for cherry blossoms is incredibly short-lived, typically 14 days. The blooming period for other prominent trees on campus like magnolias is just as fleeting, often three to four weeks. Pressing flowers can be a meditative, low time commitment way to rest and reconnect with nature during this time.

MARCH 2022

While professionals may use tools like a flower press and tweezers, all that’s really necessary is a book or folder which most of us carry between classes anyways. To set the flowers and accelerate the process, you can transfer them to a weightier book later. It doesn’t need to be perfect and you might not even use the flowers later. (In fact, sometimes I forget about them until they fall out of a book many years later). The beauty of this process is rather in the act of observation, of taking a walk and pausing when needed, of noticing the individual flowers that together comprise the orchard-like view. It’s in the act of being present, and in the sensation of touch, feeling the velvety petals and even the particles of soil clinging to them.

44

It goes without saying that flowers on private property and ornamental arrangements like those in Prospect Garden are typically off-limits. You should also avoid plucking too many. To do the least harm, you can even just pick up flowers that have recently fallen on the ground. Sometimes color from the flowers can come off on the pages, so if you’re worried about that, you can protect your book with a sheet of paper. For bulkier flowers, it can be a good idea to take them apart or fan out the petals instead of squashing them at an awkward angle.

The flower is completely pressed once it is dry, often turning papery and translucent. The process is certainly based on trial and error: Some flowers might blanch and others might become too fragile, so you should experiment and try as many different varieties as you can. In the book How to Do Nothing, Jenny Odell reflects on the time she spends at a place called the Rose Garden, writing: “I sit in the deep bowl of the Rose Garden . . . inhabiting a reality interwoven by myriad bodily sensitivities besides my own . . . That tiny, glowing world of metrics cannot compare to this one, which speaks to me instead in breezes, light and shadow, and the unruly, indescribable detail of the real.” Pressing flowers is an exercise in patience and attention. Keepsakes like these evoke memories in a different way than photos on our phone do, given the tactile aspect and how they age with us. In a couple of months, the flowers won’t look exactly like they did before, but neither will you.

MARCH 2022

Whether you incorporate them into a card or collage, use them in papermaking, or leave them in your phone case, the flowers become a record of the places on campus you visited, what you were doing and feeling at the time. While taking pictures can give us something more permanent to look back on, the therapeutic and minimal work taken in collecting and preserving flowers can allow us to engage deeply with our physical surroundings and the present moment.
