Persons who are not customers of the City water service are specically prohibited from use of the City compost facility, unless otherwise allowed by permit issued by the City Council. A violaƟon of this ordinance is punishable as a municipal infracƟon.

No burning is allowed within three (3) feet of the traveled porƟon of a City street. Due diligence shall be exercised in aƩending these res by the persons starƟng them. Rubber Ɵres shall not be used to ignite landscape waste.

Royal Ruby Glass Q: I have four saucers, four teacups and a sugar and creamer in Royal Ruby glass.

It has such a beautiful color, I am curious about how it was made. -- Raynette, Springdale, Ark. A: Although the ancient Egyptians were known to make red glass, most of the pieces seen in American shops and antiques malls are of fairly recent vintage. The 1920s and ‘30s saw pieces being manufactured, and after a lull, production picked up again during the 1940s when Anchor Hocking introduced its pattern of Royal Ruby.

The company used copper to achieve its rich color. Some of this type of glass used gold, but its use was, of course, much more expensive to produce. This glass was made in a variety of hues, from the deep-red colors of ruby to the lighter shades of cranberry.

The Royal Ruby glass produced by Anchor Hocking is plentiful and fairly inexpensive. Most collectors are especially interested in the pre-World War II pieces.

FLAKY NECTARINE PIE 2 packages pre-made pie dough (for 2 pie crusts) or homemade pie dough for 2 pie crusts Filling 8 cups (about 7) ripe nectarines, unpeeled, pitted and cut into 1-inch chunks 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar 1/8 teaspoon salt 4 tablespoon cornstarch 1 tablespoon brandy 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 egg white, beaten, at room temperature 1 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar For the Filling 1. In a large bowl, toss together the nectarines and lemon juice. Add sugars and the salt; gently mix to combine without mashing the nectarine chunks. Set aside to macerate for about 30 minutes.

2. Return nectarines to the bowl and add cornstarch, mixing until it has completely dissolved. Stir in the brandy and vanilla. Reserve.

To Assemble and Bake 1. Transfer one round of the pie crust dough to a black steel or Pyrex 9-inch pie pan, and trim the edges so they are even with the rim. Place the second round on a flat baking sheet and place in freezer. This will become the top of the pie.

2. Freeze dough in pie pan for 1 hour. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 425 F. Remove pie pan from freezer and line the dough with aluminum foil. Fill with baking beads, dried beans or uncooked rice. Bake for 30 minutes; allow to cool. When cool, preheat oven again to 350 F. 3. Pour nectarine filling into the pre-baked pie shell. Use a pastry brush to moisten the edges of the bottom pie crust with some of the egg white. Remove the top dough from freezer and place over the fruit. Press down around edges with fingers to seal, and tuck any excess dough under the edges. With paring knife, cut 12 slits in the center of raw dough, barely piercing it, to create air vents. Then, brush top dough with remaining egg white and sprinkle with Demerara or granulated sugar.

4. Bake on an aluminum foil-covered rimmed 11-by-17-inch baking sheet on the center rack for 1 hour until pie is deeply golden, and you can see the thick juices bubbling through the vents. Her new book, “Overwhelmed: Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the Time,” is a must-read for those of us who struggle with managing our own time, yet cannot pinpoint how to begin to correct the problem, or how our time struggle even began in the first place. The book examines, in-depth, why so many of us are having trouble with managing time -- including what societal factors or personal habits are limiting our success.

Weaving a story of feeling overwhelmed across different facets of modern day life -work, love and play -- Schulte focuses on the ideas of “time confetti” and “time serenity” as a way to explain the problem of feeling like there are never enough hours in the day to get things done.

The book is a mix of research notes, studies, public politics/ political motives, interviews, anecdotes and the author’s own first-person account of how this country has become overwhelmed. The book points out traps that we all fall into and provides some real-life examples of how to cope with or avoid the traps.

In 1977, I saw a young Robin Williams guesting in a taping of “The Richard Pryor Show.” Everyone there knew this funny guy was going places. He showed up next as a regular on the revival of “Laugh-In,” the top-rated variety show of the 1960s. “LaughIn” gave us Lily Tomlin and Goldie Hawn, who later won an Oscar for “There’s a Girl in My Soup” with Peter Sellers. Even President Richard Nixon wanted to be on the show. Robin also guested on the sitcom “Eight is Enough,” and then the spin-off pilot of “Mork and Mindy.” That aired as a “Happy Days” segment before it became a regular series that ran from 1978-1982.

Robin was a comic genius who gave too much of himself away. Last year he appeared on the Emmy Awards to deliver a tribute about his idol, Jonathan Winters, who played his son on “Mork and Mindy.” This year the Emmy Awards are planning a tribute to him. *** Calling Dr. Kildare! Richard Chamberlain, absent from Broadway since 1999 when he played Baron Von Trapp in “The Sound of Music,” will star with Holly Hunter and Bill Pullman in the New Group’s production of “Sticks and Stones” later this year. It’s a Vietnam-era story in which he plays a priest. The last time he played a priest was opposite Barbara Stanwyck in 1983’s “The Thorn Birds.”

His first Broadway attempt was in the 1966 musical version of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” The book was written by Edward Albee from a Truman Capote novella, and was the basis of the famous Audrey Hepburn film made in 1961. The cast boasted Chamberlain, Mary Tyler Moore, Sally Kellerman and Larry Kert, the original Tony in Broadway’s “West Side Story.” Guess the public didn’t want to see anyone but Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly. *** Channing Tatum currently is co-writing the sequel to “Magic Mike,” titled “Magic Mike XXL,” with his partner Reid Carolin.

Make Kale Chips With Kids

Hail to kale! I’m not sure what brought the green, leafy, goodfor-you veggie into such renown, but try to open a foodie magazine or blog without some recipe bowing to its virtues. I’ve been following the trend and now dutifully toss it into stir fries and salads, and even let it stand alone all spiced up in our family’s most recent obsession -- kale chips.

While kale chip recipes abound, I found the best, foolproof technique from Tricia Cornell, mom of two, freelance writer and author of the book “Eat More Vegetables: Making the Most of Your Seasonal Produce” (Minnesota Historical Society Press).

The cookbook is chock full of easy-to-follow “family friendly, get kids involved” veggie recipes such as her tasty take on “Squash Chili” and “Soupe au Pistou.” True to form, she has the kale-chip-making technique down to a science. “When my kids clamor for kale chips, who am I to refuse?” she said as her 7-year-old old son Arlo chopped up the kale, and 9-year-old Nora grated Parmesan for the chips that would accompany their hamburger sliders supper. “I want the chips to be tasty and crispy every time we make them,” she said.

CHEESY KALE CHIPS Makes 4 cups 1 large bunch kale (12 ounces) both Lacinato and curly kale work well.

1 tablespoon olive or canola oil 1/4 cup finely grated Parmesan 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper or 1/2 teaspoon pepper flakes Here’s the fun: 1. Heat oven to 400 degrees F. 2. Trim off the long, tough center stems from kale and discard. Slice leaves into 1to 2-inch pieces and place in a large bowl.

Pour oil, cheese, salt and pepper over kale, and massage kale well with your hands, making sure every piece is covered, but not dripping with oil.

3. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper and spread kale in a single layer.

Place in oven and immediately reduce heat to 250 F. 4. Bake about 20 minutes, until crisp, stirring kale and turning pans halfway through. It’s important to keep an eagle eye toward the end; you want crisp, not brown.

5. When completely cool, serve. If there are any leftovers, store in airtight container up to three days.

Variation: Barbecue Kale Chips

Omit Parmesan and pepper. Stir 1 teaspoon pimenton de la vera (smoked Spanish paprika) and 1/2 teaspoon sugar into the salt before adding.
