As the population grew and more people shared the same name, it became necessary to add descriptive information about which John or Mary was being discussed. That’s when surnames were added. Sur comes from the Latin super and means ‘above and beyond.’

Come along with Tidbits as we consider names.

• Many surnames began as physical descriptions of a person: Black, White, Little, Longfellow. Some described their personal qualities: Smart, Swift, Armstrong, Truman.

Many described occupations: Cook, Baker, Butler, Carpenter, Farmer, Taylor, Weaver.

Some described where the person lived: Wood, River, Churchill. Some described who the person was related to: Johnson, Peterson, Anderson.

• Taxes had a big factor in the naming of people. Nobody wanted to pay taxes twice, so names and identities needed to be clear.

By the 1300s it was normal for everybody to have two names. Names, just like all other words, pass from one language into the next and travel from country to country. When any word passes into a new language, it usually changes a bit. A massive name-changing occurred when foreigners speaking strange languages arrived in America at the desks of tired government clerks whose job was to write their names down in English. Difficult names were frequently Americanized on the spot.

• In Germany there are laws regulating which names may be used, and names entered into the official record must be kept for life.

German law also states that a woman must take her husband’s name upon marriage. The Roman Catholic Church requires that a baby be named after a saint.

• Until 1804, Jews of eastern Europe and Russia were known only by their first names and the name of their father: Yaakov was his first name and his father’s name was Yitzhak, so his name was Yaakov ben Yitzhak. (Ben means ‘son of.’) Therefore, no name was kept for more than a single generation. Czar Alexander I forced Jews to acquire permanent surnames in order to aid in tax collection and the draft of Jewish soldiers.

• In Slavic languages, suffixes -vitch and -ov mean ‘descendent of’ and many names end in those: Ivanovitch and Chekov. German and Austrian Jews used the ending -sohn, which also means ‘son of’ such as Mendelsohn.

• In Sweden it was standard for sons to be given a first name followed by a surname of their father’s first name with -son added on.

When Lars Carlson had a son named Erik, his name became Erik Larson. Erik Larson’s son Peter became Peter Erikson. Peter Erikson’s son John became John Peterson, etc.

• The Hispanic tradition is to give the child his given name and follow it with the father’s surname and then the mother’s maiden name.

• When the slaves were freed they were required to pick out surnames for themselves.

Many adopted their previous owner’s names, and some picked out names of people they admired. Booker T. Washington and George Washington were greatly admired by blacks, so many took on the name of Washington.

Today 4/5ths of the people named Washington are black.

The ‘Independence at Home’ Series Part Four – Aids for Daily Living There comes that point in the life of a senior when the thought of moving into an assisted living complex or a skilled nursing facility becomes a reality. Quite often, you can postpone that move and remain independent at home with some basic adjustments to your environment.

Let’s face it, as we get older, some tasks that we would not have given a second thought to have become increasingly difficult.

Bending, reaching, and even dressing can develop into a major chore. Luckily, there are many inexpensive items that can aid us with common physical activities.

Difficulty with Reaching and Bending Do you have an item just out of reach on a shelf, or maybe something on the floor that is difficult for you to bend and pick up? A ‘reacher’ is a great tool to not only extend your reach, but can actually grab items. These are sometimes referred to as a ‘grabber’. They have a long handle with a pincher at the end that allows you to grab clothing, cups, books, or most any smaller object.

Difficulty with Dressing Let’s start with socks and shoes. As we age, compression stockings are quite often necessary to help with an assortment of leg problems – but these stockings can be a bear to put on. There are several varieties of sock aids to help get you going. Some of the simplest sock aids are sections of slippery fabric that you lay on your foot or leg before putting the stocking on which allow you to easily slip the stocking into place.

Most common sock aids are based on a half-cylindrical device. You slip the sock over the half-tube first, then put your foot into the tube (and the stocking), then pull the tube up your leg using the pull handles with the stocking in tow. This same mechanic can also be found in stocking donners, which are usually a metal wire frame that works as a substitute for the half-tube – this device has metal handles on the side to pull the donner and stockings into place.

Many common problems can be solved by using a simple, inexpensive device. Don’t continue to struggle, stop into a home health store and see what is available to make your day much easier!

• C.J. Walker, born just after the Civil War ended, grew up to become not only the first self-made female American millionaire, but also the first self-made female African American millionaire.

• Born Sarah Breedlove in Louisiana in 1867, she grew up in a family of six children. Her parents and her older siblings had been slaves on a plantation. She was the first child in the family born into freedom. She married for the first time at the age of 14 and gave birth to her daughter Lelia three years later. When her husband died while she was 19, she moved to St. Louis where one of her brothers ran a barber shop. She then spent the next 18 years struggling to support herself and her daughter as a washer woman. She married Charles Walker in 1906 and became known at that time as Madam C. J. Walker.

• In those days, indoor plumbing, electricity, and hot water heaters had not yet been invented so people bathed infrequently and rarely washed their hair. Scalp problems were common. C.J. suffered from hair loss as a result, as did many of her friends and acquaintances. She tried all the products that were on the market at the time, and none of them worked. She tried numerous home remedies and got the same dismal results. Then one night she had a dream. In the dream, she was selling a formula that straightened black women’s hair.

• Acting on the dream, she invested $2 in ingredients and began to experiment. The resulting formula, which used sulfur, made her scalp healthy and her hair shiny. It also straightened hair if it was used in conjunction with a heated hair iron.

• She began selling the product to her friends and neighbors, who recommended it to their friends and neighbors.

• Her hair straightener sold like proverbial hotcakes and soon she had trouble keeping up with all the orders. She began hiring people to help her sell the straightener as well as other beauty products she designed, in much the same way that Avon operates today. Her daughter took over the thriving mail-order business, running it out of a shop in Denver.

• In 1908, C.J. Walker moved to Pittsburgh where she opened a cosmetology college to train ‘hair culturists.’ Here she taught other impoverished black women how to support themselves by running their own hair salons. Two years later she moved to Indianapolis where she established the permanent headquarters of the Madam C.J Walker Manufacturing Company.

A: Double-check the fuse at the circuit box.

Although the vent hood light is working, suggesting that a tripped fuse isn’t the problem, this is the easiest and fastest thing to check. If it has tripped, reset the switch.

If that isn’t the issue, it’s time to check the unit itself. Turn off power to the vent fan at the circuit box. Remove the fan’s protective grill and filter. Using a flashlight, peer up past the fan blades to see if you can locate a plug that runs from the fan motor to a receptacle inside the fan unit. If you can’t see it, carefully remove the fan bracket by loosening the mounting screws on either side of the housing. Ease the fan and motor out of the housing just a few inches to see how it’s connected.

If the fan has a plug from the motor to the receptacle, make sure it is plugged in completely. Inspect the plug cord for fraying or other damage and take a look at the receptacle as well.

Now is a good time to get a look at the fan itself and make sure the blades are undamaged and attached securely.

If you can’t see anything wrong, plug the unit in securely, remount the fan and motor, and test the fan by turning the circuit back on and then switching the fan on.

If the motor is directly wired to the house wiring, proceed with caution. You will need to use a circuit tester to make sure no power is reaching the unit. Without touching any bare wires, place one probe from your circuit tester into one of the wire connectors. Place the other probe against the grounding screw on the fan unit’s metal housing. If the circuit tester glows, power is still reaching the unit -- don’t do anything until you’ve switched off the correct circuit at the panel. Repeat the test with all the wire connectors.

Once you’ve ensured power is not reaching the fan unit, make sure the wiring is not frayed or otherwise damaged. If it is, bring in an electrician to repair the wires and check the entire circuit for unseen problems.

If everything looks OK and undamaged, you’ll likely need to replace the fan. Kitchen fans can run around $100 by themselves, and you might have to hunt a bit for replacements for older models.

Unscrew the old fan’s mounting bracket and ease the unit out of its housing. Unplug it from the receptacle, if it’s a plug-type unit, or disconnect it from the house wiring (after ensuring no power is reaching the unit). With a helper holding the new unit steady, attach the new unit to the house wiring in the same way as the old -- or plug it into the receptacle if it has a plug -- and mount in place with the existing brackets.

HOME TIP: Clean the kitchen fan’s filter every month by removing it, soaking it in warm soapy water, and cleaning with a soft cloth.
