• In 1926, Route 66 was officially commissioned, a 2,448-mile road from Chicago to Los Angeles, winding through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. At the end of that year, just 800 miles were paved. Road signs didn’t go up until the following year. It wasn’t until 1938 that the entire route was paved, the first highway to have this completed.

• Because the route passed through hundreds of small towns, there was a dramatic increase in the number of “mom and pop” businesses, service stations, roadside diners, and motels.

America’s first drive-through restaurant, Red’s Giant Hamburg opened along the road in Springfield, Missouri. The Cozy Dog Drive Inn, still in operation today in Springfield, 16:15:10 Illinois, offered some of the route’s first fast food and the introduction of the corn dog.

The first McDonald’s opened in 1945 in San Bernardino at the end of the road, offering 19 cheeseburgers and 20 malts. It’s now a museum and Route 66 historic site.

• During the massive dust bowl storms of the 1930s in the Midwest, when millions of tons of topsoil were blown away, over 200,000 people migrated to California along Route 66 in search of a better life. John Steinbeck wrote of the migration in his 1939 book The Grapes of Wrath, dubbing the highway the “Mother Road” and the road of flight for “refugees from dust and shrinking land.”

• In the 1950s, Route 66 became a vacation destination with a wide variety of roadside attractions. Teepee-shaped motels, trading posts, and tourist traps catered to those visiting caves, canyons, mountains, and deserts. The highway ran through Arizona’s Painted Desert, Meteor Crater, and near the Grand Canyon. During the 1940s, the Wigwam Village chain of motels sprang up along the highway. With individual cabins built in the form of teepees, there were seven original locations. Two of the three remaining motels are located on Route 66, in Holbrook, Arizona and Rialto, California.

• Full-service gas stations popped up along the length of the route. One major company even took its name from the highway. In 1927, the Phillips Company’s newly-developed highoctane gasoline was tested along U.S. Highway 66 in Oklahoma. As the automobile reached its top speed, it was noted that the number was 66 mph, a fast pace for that era. The new fuel was named Phillips 66, and the company’s shield logo was designed to resemble the road sign.

• Near Amarillo, Texas, travelers can visit Cadillac Ranch, a row of 10 Cadillacs with the tailfins reaching to the sky. The cars, ranging from 1949 to 1963, are half-buried, nose first in the Texas countryside, the brainstorm of a Texas patron of the arts. It’s the only place in Texas where it is legal to spray graffiti on an object.

Solomon wrote, “The start of a quarrel is like a leak in a dam, so stop it before it bursts.” Proverbs 17:14. A person who starts a quarrel here and there will someday be the source of an eruption of major proportions. A trickle that becomes a torrent starts out as more water flowing than predicted. The trickle then leads to water flow that is impossible to control. The burst then leads to water that will never be retrieved. So the solution is to not allow the dam to be breached. James wrote, “I’ll be swift to hear, slow to speak, pushing down my anger for the Lord.” To prevent a flood the best thing to do is shut up!!!

• Restored to its original grandeur, the world’s largest ketchup bottle stands proudly near Collinsville, Illinois, formerly along Route 66. Built in 1949, this 170-ft.-tall structure is actually a water tower painted like a Brooks Rich & Tangy Ketchup bottle, and could actually hold 640,000 14-oz. bottles of ketchup. The Brooks Company left the area in the 1970s.

• In 1946, songwriter Bobby Troup was on a cross-country trip from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles and came up with the idea of writing a song about the journey.

The result was “Get Your Kicks on Route 66,” a song that became a huge hit that year for Nat King Cole. When Troup had trouble coming up with lyrics for the tune, he simply filled it with names of towns along the way, starting with the Missouri cities of St. Louis and Joplin, then on to Oklahoma City, Amarillo, Texas, Gallup, New Mexico, the Arizona communities of Winona and Kingman, and California cities Barstow and San Bernardino. Of the eight states that Route 66 passed through, Kansas is the only state not mentioned in the song.

• Interest in Route 66 was revitalized in 2006 when Pixar released the animated film Cars, which chronicled the decline of the fictional community of Radiator Springs when the once-booming town was bypassed by the interstate. The idea of Cars was hatched after Pixar’s creative director took a cross-country road trip with his family. He based many of the film’s sites on real-life locations he encountered, including the general store in Hackberry, Arizona, and Erick, Oklahoma’s Sand Hills Curiosity Shop. The movie’s bridges resemble several along Route 66 in Oklahoma, Arizona, and California. The film calls its teepee-shaped motor court the Cozy Cone Motel.

A complex system that does not work is invariably found to have evolved from a simpler system that worked just fine.

• The 1939 AAA travel directory lists Cuba, Missouri’s Wagon Wheel Cabins as one of the finest motor courts in the state. Constructed in 1934 of Ozark stone, each cabin had its own private tub or shower bath with rates of $2.50 per day for two persons. It’s still in operation today. Cuba also opened Carr’s Phillips 66 service station in 1932 to accommodate the increase of travelers along the route.

• Route 66 began its slow decline in 1953, when Oklahoma opened the Turner Turnpike between Tulsa and Oklahoma, bypassing 100 miles and each of the towns along the road. In 1956, President Eisenhower signed the Interstate Highway Act, calling for a modern four-lane highway system with no intersections. Service stations and commercial businesses were prohibited at the highway access sites and within a few short years, as small towns were bypassed, businesses began to fail from lack of traffic. In 1965, the Highway Beautification Act restricted the road signs that urged travelers to pull off the exit to reach Route 66.

• R oute 66 was officially decommissioned and removed from the U.S. Highway system in 1985, and was taken off road maps. Motorists can no longer drive Route 66 uninterrupted from Chicago to Los Angeles. Parts of it are the “business loop” in many cities, while other sections are state and local roads, and some are completely abandoned. Several stretches have been preserved, with some having been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The ‘Independence at Home’ Series Part One - The Bathroom There comes that point in the life of a senior when the thought of moving into an assisted living complex or a skilled nursing facility becomes a reality. Quite often, you can postpone that move and remain independent at home with some basic adjustments to your environment.

We should first look at the bathroom, as this is where unnecessary injuries can occur, and many people need the most assistance.

The Shower or Tub

First and foremost, a good non-slip suction mat or rubber silicone appliqués in the tub will help prevent many falls.

Attaching clamp-on grab bars to the side of a tub gives great assistance when getting down into the tub, or trying to get back up.

Safety grab bars are another excellent addition to the shower walls. Grab bars should be installed inside the shower or tub area where they can be easily reached when stepping in or stepping out. Bars should be installed horizontally or vertically, as slipping can more easily occur with diagonal bars. If these bars will be supporting your weight, you will want to have bars that are secured to the walls by screws or brackets. If you only need a balance assist while standing, placing suction grab bars on a smooth surface like glass or plastic are a good and easy alternative.

If you are unsteady while standing in the shower, a smart idea is to use a shower chair. A shower chair will fit entirely inside the tub area, and will sometimes come with a back or arms to assist in standing. There are many varieties available, so find one that feels comfortable to you and has the ability to adjust the height, as a seat too low is difficult to get up from.

If you need a shower chair, but stepping into the tub is difficult, a transfer bench will assist in this situation. A transfer bench is about twice as wide as a shower chair, and part of the bench will be outside of the tub area. This allows you to sit down on the bench outside the tub, lift your legs over the edge of the tub, then scoot the rest of the way into the shower area. There are some transfer benches that have a sliding seat that will make it easier to transfer.

If you are sitting on a shower chair or bench, the spraying water will be quite the distance from your head. The best way to fix this is to install a hand-held shower head.

A good hand-held shower head will have the ability to pause the water when you don’t need it, and will have an optional holder located near the original spout area in order to provide a ‘normal’ shower for anyone that is standing to take a shower.

• Born in Pennsylvania, Grace was the daughter of the owner of the largest construction company on the East Coast. Jack Kelly had been an Olympic athlete, the winner of three gold medals in sculling. At 21, she received her first movie role, a two-minute, 14-second appearance in the 1951 film Fourteen Hours. She caught the eye of actor Gary Cooper, and was selected to star with him in his next film High Noon.

• By her third movie Mogambo, she was a confirmed star with Golden Globe and Oscar nominations. Three Alfred Hitchcock movies followed and an Academy Award for 1954’s The Country Girl. A visit to 1955’s Cannes Film Festival changed her life. It was here that she met Prince Rainier of Monaco when she was asked to do a photo shoot with him. It so happened that the prince needed a wife, because according to a 1918 treaty with France, if he did not produce an heir, the tiny principality of Monaco would revert to French rule.

• Grace returned to America, going right back to work on a new movie in which, coincidentally, she played the part of a princess. She began corresponding with the prince, and at the end of the year, Rainier came to America, met Grace’s family, and after three days, proposed marriage. The Kelly family was required to put up a dowry of $2 million in order for the marriage to take place.

• French law required both a civil and religious ceremony. The 40-minute civil ceremony was broadcast on April 18, 1956 from the Palace Throne Room of Monaco. That evening the couple attended the opera, where Grace was seen in a hand-embroidered silk gown embellished with 800,000 sequins and 1,500 pearls and rhinestones.

• The religious ceremony held the next day was attended by 600 guests and watched by 30 million people on television. Grace’s dress, designed and sewn by MGM Studio’s costume masters, used 25 yards of silk taffeta, 100 yards of silk net, and 125-year-old lace that had been purchased from a museum. Thirty-six seamstresses worked for six weeks to complete the gown. The couple invited the entire 3,000 adult population of Monaco to the celebration that followed. The principality’s citizens gifted the newlyweds with a cream and black Rolls Royce convertible.

•Following their seven-week Mediterranean honeymoon cruise aboard the Prince’s yacht, the couple settled into their 15th-century mansion, where they raised three children, Caroline, Albert, and Stephanie during their 26-year marriage. In 1982, while driving on a mountain road accompanied by Stephanie, Grace suffered a stroke and lost control of the vehicle, which plunged down the mountainside. Grace died the next day from her injuries at age 52.

Choosing the Right Moving Company

Q: We’re moving across the country soon, and for the first time can afford to have a moving company load and carry our furniture for us. However, I’ve heard horror stories on the news and from acquaintances that I could be cheated or have to pay much more than the original quote. Should I go with a moving company anyway? -- Bill S., Los Angeles A: There have been occasional press reports about movers that charge homeowners much more than the original quote. This isn’t always the case, but as with any business transaction, a little caution goes a long way.

As with any contractor job, you should get multiple quotes from several different moving companies -- at least three. A flat rate or blind estimate made over the phone should not be accepted; the moving company should send a representative to your home to find out exactly how much furniture, boxes and other items are being moved, what items need special attention and so on. You should get a quote in writing, and don’t agree to it before you’ve gotten estimates from the other companies.

To find out how well a moving company does its job, you have a number of options today. The Better Business Bureau is a fair starting point -- you can read complaints about the company, as well as whether they’ve been resolved. For national companies, look at websites like Consumerist.com, which posts reader complaints and attempts to resolve or at least get an explanation about an issue from the companies involved.

In major metro areas, you can check review sites like Yelp.com. While these don’t usually have an area where companies can respond to complaints or disputes, you can get a general feel for the company and how it conducts business by the number and types of reviews.

Once you’ve selected a moving company, be sure to read all the fine print before signing a moving agreement. Ask as many questions as you need to in order to feel comfortable, particularly about extra costs that are mentioned in the agreement.

HOME TIP: Consider purchasing relocation insurance during a move to cover potential accidents or damage to items while they’re in transit.
