by Kathy Wolfe In honor of the 73rd annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally being held August 5 through 11, Tidbits checks out the facts on Harley-Davidson, founded in 1903 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

• In 1901, 21-year-old William Harley wrapped up a blueprint drawing of a single-cylinder engine designed to be attached to a regular bicycle frame. Two years later, with the help of his childhood friend Arthur Davidson, their first motorcycle rolled out of their first “factory,” a 10’ x 15’ wooden shed.

Arthur’s brothers joined the company shortly afterward, boosting 1903’s production to three motorcycles. Eight cycles were sold in 1905, and 50 the following year. While the first Harley was black, customers in 1905 could choose black or the “Silent Grey Fellow,” Each had hand-painted stripes and a handlettered “Harley-Davidson Motor Company” name on the fuel tank.

• Harley-Davidson expanded to a new factory measuring 28’ x 80’ in 1906, and six fulltime employees were on staff. The next year, production increased to 150. Another new factory came along in 1913, boasting 297,110 sq. ft, compared to the 2,240 sq. ft. of the 1906 facility. The larger area enabled the company to produce 12,904 cycles that year.

• In 1946, foreign motorcycles hit the American market and the competition with British and Japanese bikes was fierce. British imports had a sportier appearance and were cheaper and more reliable. Favorable tax laws governing imports made these bikes even more attractive. Although Harley-Davidson introduced the Hydra-Glide with the Panhead engine in an attempt to compete, it was heavy and not as sporty. It didn’t take long for H-D’s market share to shrink to a mere 6% of the market. By 1950, 40% of the motorcycles in the U.S. were foreign-made.

• Harley has also had a variety of “heads” over the years. First there was the Flathead, dubbed as such because of the shape of the cylinder head cover. Introduced in 1929, it was a 45-cubic-inch side-valve engine. The Knucklehead, the first V-Twin model, debuted in 1936 with its cylinder covers shaped like clenched fists. It featured two fuel tanks with the instrument panel positioned between them. It was produced until 1947. Along came the Panhead in 1948 with aluminum cylinder covers resembling upside-down saucepans. Panheads were around until 1965. The next year brought the Shovelhead, whose cylinder covers looked like the back of a shovel. Compare the Shovelhead’s engine size of 74 cubic inches with that 1903 model’s 25 cubic inches! The year 1984 brought in the Blockhead, an 80-cubic-inch engine.

• For seven days every August, Main Street in Sturgis, South Dakota, population 6,700, is packed with thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts who gather to race and tour.

The first rally was held in 1938, drawing nine racers and 200 spectators. The two-day rally offered $500 in prize money. Two years later, 150 racers participated in front of 5,000 onlookers. Close to 450,000 are expected for this year’s rally.

• Harley-Davidson expects to ship about 260,000 motorcycles to dealerships during 2013.

The president of a movie-studio who was not exactly noted for his knowledge of the English language received a well written story titled “The Optimist.” After reading the manuscript, he called a gathering of the most creative minds and announced, “Gentlemen, we got us a great story here, but I want all of you to think of something simpler for a title. Medicare Change Is Hush-Hush It used to be that if seniors received physical therapy, they had to get better or Medicare wouldn’t pay for it. If their condition later got worse, Medicare would jump back in and pay for more treatment.

It was the same for coverage of other types of skilled care: rehabilitation, nursing (care that can’t be given by a non-medical person), speech therapy and more. No improvement meant that it wouldn’t be paid for.

But some seniors won’t get better. Their improvement reaches a plateau and stops.

Or perhaps they have a chronic disability.

They do, however, need care to maintain the levels they currently have. And with home health or outpatient care, they could continue to live at home.

There was a lawsuit, and the judge agreed: Getting better isn’t required to keep coverage.

This change takes place immediately, and per a Kaiser Health News bulletin, it applies to “care by skilled professionals in outpatient therapy, home health care and nursing homes.”

The agreement from the lawsuit, however, doesn’t require that Medicare tell us about the change. Apparently we’re supposed to find out by ourselves. But, from now on, claims filed, even if there hasn’t been any improvement in a senior’s condition, won’t be turned down automatically.

At this point, it appears that some doctors and therapists don’t know about this change: If continued treatment is required, even past the standard dollar limit, they can put a code on the claim that states further treatment is medically necessary. According to the lawsuit, Medicare has until next January to notify employees who staff the 800-MEDICARE information line, doctors and other health-care providers.

If your providers say your coverage will come to an end, be sure to tell them about this important change.

• At age 17, Florence told her family she had received a revelation from God, telling her she had a mission in life, and she abandoned her active social life and marriage proposals to devote her life to serving others. Although her parents voiced strong objections and disapproval, Florence entered a training school for nurses and went on to become superintendent of a charity-supported medical facility.

• When the Crimean War broke out in 1854, Florence volunteered as a nurse and organized a group of 38 nurses to work at a Turkish hospital. Her first order of business was to clean up the filthy and unsanitary conditions at the facility, greatly reducing the death rate among wounded soldiers. The hospital had been built atop an immense cesspool, which had poisoned the entire building. As a result of her efforts, Florence became the leading expert on waste sanitation and fresh water irrigation, and continued to strive for hygienic medical conditions. Because she frequently made her rounds after dark, walking the halls with a lamp and comforting patients throughout the night, she soon came to be known as “The Lady with the Lamp.”

• At age 40, Florence created the Nightingale School for Nurses at London’s St. Thomas Hospital. She personally trained the nurses and midwives herself, stressing the need for hygiene and sanitary conditions. The school remains in operation today as part of King’s College in London.

• During the Crimean War, Florence had become sick with “Crimean Fever,” which took its toll on her for the remainder of her life. Although she was confined to her bed much of the time after the war, she continued her efforts at improving hospital conditions. She frequently suffered from depression, probably the result of brucellosis, a fever common during the War. Florence’s symptoms lingered for decades. Even from her bed, Florence was active as a pioneer in the field of hospital planning.

• Florence was responsible for bringing quality nursing to the United States through her mentoring and instruction of Linda Richards, America’s first professionally-trained nurse.

Linda used Florence’s training and knowledge to establish high-quality nursing schools in the U.S. and Japan, and went on to create the first system for keeping individual medical records for patients.

• In 1883, Queen Victoria awarded Florence the Royal Red Cross, a military decoration for exceptional service in military nursing.

• As her health continued to fail, Florence rarely left her home, eventually becoming completely blind. She passed away at age 90 in London. The annual International Nurses Day is celebrated worldwide on May 12, in commemoration of Florence Nightingale’s birthday.

It is a soft drink.” ● The minnow has teeth, but they’re not in its mouth; they’re found in the throat. ● Ever wonder where we get the term “blurb” to indicate a short summary or promotional piece accompanying a creative work? At a trade association dinner in 1907, author Gelett Burgess presented attendees with a limited edition of one of his books. It was customary to have a brief summary included on the dust jacket of such books, along with a picture of an attractive woman. Burgess followed this custom with a twist. On the cover of his piece was an image of a woman with her hand held to her mouth, as if shouting. The caption for this image was “Belinda Blurb, in the act of blurbing,” and bold letters at the top of the dust jacket declared, “Yes, this is a Blurb!” The name stuck. Avoid These Common Painting Mistakes

Q: I just started doing some repainting around the house, and I am finding that my first efforts don’t look great. The paint seems thick in some spots; old paint is still faintly visible in others, and I can see brush marks everywhere. I’m going to need to start over, I guess. Any advice on how to improve my painting skills? -- Susan in Kansas City, Mo. A: First, I’m glad you stopped with the first room as soon as you saw the problems. That way you can fix the mistakes there and learn enough to not repeat them in other rooms, which saves time and money. Experience will help improve many of these common painting problems. But there are some basic steps to take that will minimize the issues.

--Paint showing through the new coat: Put a coat of primer between the old paint and the new when the old paint is a darker color or if it is a different type of paint (oil-based vs. latex-based, for example).

--”Thick”-looking spots: These can be caused by painting a second coat before the first one is dry, or by painting over fresh spackling that isn’t completely dry. Thick spots on the old coat of paint also will show through the new one; try to sand those down beforehand.

--Brush marks: Always stir the paint when you open the can, even if the paint store pre-stirred it for you. Then, make sure not to overload your brush with paint: dip only about one-third of the brush. Finally, make your brush strokes smooth and long, and lift the brush away so the paint feathers out.

--Uneven roller strokes: Apply paint to the roller evenly by using a paint tray or screen. Dip one side of the roller into the paint reservoir and then roll it back and forth on the tray or screen so it spreads evenly. Also, don’t let the roller “slide” across the wall surface; it should roll freely. If it doesn’t, disassemble and clean it.

--Paint drips: Again, don’t overload your brush or roller. If paint drips down the wall, finish the brush stroke and then brush the drip in the same direction that you’re painting the rest of the wall, feathering it out. If paint drips on the floor or baseboards, wipe it up immediately with a damp cloth.

--Paint splatters: This happens often when using rollers, so always start your roll by angling upward, and roll smoothly and evenly. Don’t hurry.

HOME TIP: To prevent variation between cans of a custom-mixed color, consolidate or “box” all the custom color into a single large container, mix, and then refill the smaller cans with the mixed paint.

After two steamboat trials in Steven Vogt Owner France, one a failure and one a success, Fulton returned to America in 1806 and proceeded to build his famed steamboat the Clermont that successfully plied the Hudson River in New York. The Clermont’s first significant trip was from New York to Albany, a distance of approximately 150 miles. The Clermont left New York on August 17, 1807, and completed the voyage in 30 hours, including an overnight stop.

• The first voyage by the Clermont was met by the public with suspicion. Many referred to the boat as “Fulton’s Folly” due to its unusually long length and the smoke and fire associated with the vessel’s newfangled steam engine.

Many thought it would blow up or sink on its first voyage; they were wrong! In fact, because Fulton wisely paid attention to passenger comfort, the Clermont became a very profitable vessel for transporting passengers to destinations on the Hudson River.
