TIDBITS® TAKES A LOOK AT
BIRTH ORDER
by Kathy Wolfe Is your personality the result of the chronological place in your family? Psychologists have had theories on the issue of birth order for decades, and this week, Tidbits studies up on their findings. Follow along and see if you agree with their conclusions! • Renowned Austrian psychiatrist Alfred Adler was a pioneer in the area of birth order in the early 1900's, and was one of the first to present theories that family placement affects personality and how individuals deal with life’s issues. He believed that parents tend to treat children differently based on the order of birth. • Adler’s theory maintained that firstborn children receive an abundance of attention, but only until the second child is born. When a new baby arrives, the first-born may feel unloved, believing he or she has lost the mother’s love to the new baby. Adler called this being “dethroned,” and claimed it had a lasting effect on the individual. The loss of attention might cause the first child to become fearful, high-achieving, anxious, or competitive. He might have a need to retain praise from parents and become prone to perfectionism, making him vulnerable to stress. turn the page for more
