• The moon is 225,745 miles from Earth. If you were able to plan a trip there, it would be about a two-day trip on a rocket or a 625-hour ride on a 747 jet flying at 400 mph. If you could drive your car there, it would take 135 days traveling at 70 mph. • Driving around the circumference of the moon, 6,790 miles, is about equal to a trip from New York to London and back. The moon is about 27% the size of Earth, with an area of 14,658,000 square miles. That’s about 9.4 billion acres. • Temperatures on the moon vary from 273 degrees F at the hottest time of the day to -244 degrees F at night. A day on the moon from sunrise to sunrise is about 708 hours. It rotates on its axis at a speed of about 10 mph. Compare this with Earth, which rotates at about 1,000 mph. Yet both the moon and Earth complete their orbit in about the same amount of time. turn the page for more!
