Colourful artwork created by four Thornhill high school students is now on display as a piece of Canadiana at the Pan Am Athletes’ Village.

To help beautify the village, Pan Am organizers invited all Ontario high school students to design and paint on three, 7-ft. Muskoka chairs.

Each chair was required to have its own theme, such as cottage life, the waterfront or the city skyline, with its own particular colour scheme.

On behalf of St. Elizabeth Catholic High School, teacher Fred Galang accepted the creative invitation and assigned his Grade 11 design students to the task of designing and painting chairs as their culminating project.

As her 90-year-old husband, Laszlo, lies dying in a nearby bedroom, Emma Perlaky’s heart breaks.

“The emotion of him being sick and the realization there is no way out… When we had to realize there was no recovery from here on, that was really hard, really hard,” she said as tears welled up in her eyes.

“We used to think, ‘What will we do in the summer?’ Now, there is no tomorrow any more.”

Married for 45 years, 73-year-old Perlaky meets virtually all of Laszlo’s needs in their Thornhill home, from providing personal hygiene and cooking meals to monitoring his vital signs and getting him to medical appointments.

She has been offered help with things such as bathing assistance for Laszlo many times by the Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC), which connects residents in most of York Region and south Simcoe County with the care they need at home and in the community.

But Perlaky wants to care for her husband herself, with occasional help from their grown sons, although she admits she may require more professional assistance as Laszlo rapidly deteriorates.

She looks surprised when asked why she does it.

“You’re doing it for love. I don’t know any other reason,” she said.

Perlaky was nominated for a Heroes in the Home award by CCAC rapid response nurse Katrina CorpusRoque.

“I meet caregivers daily in my line of work and I have never met such an outstanding caregiver. Mrs. Perlaky has dedicated her life to her husband, going to great lengths to provide her husband the best care possible and keep him healthy,” she said in her nomination earlier this year.

‘Taking care of him, I don’t think about it, I just do it.

That’s my job right now.’

“I believe that it is the likes of Mrs. Perlaky that would prevent patients with manageable chronic conditions like heart failure from going back to hospital. And for this, I think the community and I are thankful for her excellent care.”

Laszlo was diagnosed with lung cancer last year, but responded well to four doses of radiation.

In January, he suffered a heart attack and was in hospital for five days. Just days after he returned home, he was re-admitted to hospital with pneumonia.

Once Laszlo’s lungs were clear, Perlaky took over the nursing duties.

She has a blood pressure monitor and a unit to check her husband’s blood oxygen level at home and she keeps meticulous records of his medical condition.

By April, Laszlo had congestive heart failure and a rapid response nurse and a dietician visited. A physiotherapist has also been treating him.

But there is not much more that can be done for Laszlo any more.

Although Perlaky insists she is physically strong, she lost her left breast to cancer five years ago. She also suffers from heart problems and diabetes.

It’s her “nerves” that bother her most as she deals with the emotional toll of watching her husband die.

She rarely leaves the house any more. But listening to music, doing artwork and gardening help.

Perlaky said she doesn’t resent dedicating all her time to her husband’s care.

“Why would I? He doesn’t want more than what he really needs.

Taking care of him, I don’t think about it, I just do it. That’s my job right now. Much harder to take care of myself. Obviously, I am somewhat second, but I know I have to take care of myself, so I can take care of him,” she said.

“I do it happily. All of my sadness basically is coming from when I’m not with him.”

While many would commend Perlaky for the loving care she gives her husband, another York family has struggled tremendously finding

care for a much-loved elderly father, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia and also suffers from the debilitating effects of gout.

“This side of the story needs to be told, too,” said Michelle, who did not want her full name published.

When her father was admitted to hospital in February with gout, a complex form of arthritis, the family learned that Michelle’s father had legally granted power of attorney to Michelle rather than to her mother, with whom he has had a difficult marriage for almost 60 years.

‘The system is there for you, but you have to figure it out and you have to listen and you have to read.

There is lots of help, but it can be overwhelming.’

While Michelle’s brothers accepted the situation when they realized she wasn’t looking to take advantage of their father, her mother and sister were very upset.

Michelle has also argued with her mother and sister because she insists her ailing and demanding father, who has taken to physically lashing out at caregivers, needs to be admitted to a long-term care facility, while they want him at home.

However, they may be changing their minds after attempts at weekend visits home have not gone well.

Since February, Michelle has struggled to cope overseeing her

home, she insisted he be taken back to hospital, where he was assigned a third CCAC case worker.

Michelle is now trying to get her father placed in a provincial longterm care home, where his Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security benefits will cover the expenses of a bed in a ward room.

The journey of getting her father care has left Michelle drained.

“For myself, the guilt is tremendous. Myself, I’m angry because I feel I have done a lot of this on my own,” she said.

“The system is there for you, but you have to figure it out and you have to listen and you have to read.

There is lots of help but it can be overwhelming.”

father’s finances and health care amid long-standing troubling family dynamics.

“The personal issues make the situation so much harder,” she said.

“Alzheimer’s and dementia is a horrible disease for everybody. There are good days and bad days. There are good days (when her father is more lucid) and you have somebody in hospital and all they say is they want to go home and they’re crying and you know in your heart that you can’t let that person go because of safety reasons.”

Her father falls repeatedly, is sometimes incontinent and insists he is capable of driving even though he has lost his driver’s licence.

Navigating the system has been difficult for Michelle, who said she adores her father but has often found herself frustrated and overwhelmed.

Although professionals have been kind, she was suddenly plunged into a world filled with terms and policies with which she is unfamiliar.

Michelle also soon came to realize the under-funded system has a shortage of available provincial nursing home beds.

Although the government is focused on an aging-at-home strategy, home care supports are lacking.

For example, clients can only rely on a limited number of hours provided by a personal care worker or limited financial help with medical equipment, she said.

The challenges will only increase with the aging population, Michelle said.

“This is going to be an epidemic, in my mind,” she said.

Michelle has felt intense pressure from the hospital to take her father home or find a facility for him to free up his hospital bed.

She was also repeatedly asked by hospital staff and a CCAC caseworker assigned to her father what plan the family had agreed on to address his long-term care needs.

Michelle had to admit her family had never talked about it, although it’s a discussion she plans to have with her own family about her future care.

Because no bed in a provincial long-term care facility was available, Michelle scrambled to find her father a bed in a private seniors’ home.

Although the home said it was able to care for seniors with some special needs, Michelle was soon told her father, who was assigned a second CCAC worker while in the home, could not be accommodated due to his behavioural problems.

His bill for 17 days in the facility came to $7,500.

My summer’s going to the dogs

I

enjoyed a needed vacation last week and basked in perfect summery weather, relaxing at the beach over a good 1,000-page novel at my favourite park in Ontario, or maybe Canada — Sandbanks.

But I couldn’t help thinking that my week had revolved around four-legged animals, specifically dogs.

I had planned a short vacation retreat at a resort in historic Prince Edward County — or “The County” as locals call it.

For decades, my father and our extended family enjoyed a family farm in Picton and so for both my adult daughter and myself, summer isn’t summer without a stay in The County and beach time at Sandbanks.

Since the farm was sold after my father’s death, we now are among the hoards of tourists who flock to resorts, cabins, trailer parks and campgrounds in the area.

After weeks of negotiations with my daughter, involving the work schedule of her boyfriend (guess he’s officially her “partner” as they are now living together) and, most importantly, the care of their two dogs, the dates were set and the resort room booked.

As dogs aren’t allowed at the resort, part of the vacation deal involved our daughter’s dog, Bruno, and the partner’s dog, Alaska, staying at a “Pet Hotel” — aka our Richmond Hill home.

My husband and son had mixed feelings about their sudden dog-care duties.

Bruno was part of our family for almost two years when our daughter lived at home and worked in Aurora; they were a package deal.

But when she worked or visited every weekend with her boyfriend, Bruno became the walking, feeding, playtime responsibility of the rest of our family.

So despite some protests, I knew both my husband and son were pleased to dig out the dog toys and welcome Bruno back home for a brief stay.

Alaska, a girl dog, was an unknown houseguest. She and Bruno have become doggy pals now that their human parents live together, but she’d never stayed

At any rate, with tales wagging and then with brief howls of protest when my daughter and her partner left to head to Sandbanks, they settled in to our home.

There were more howls of protest when I headed out the door too, loaded down with coolers and bags.

At any rate, I drove to The County, met my daughter and her partner at the beach for a picnic lunch, and was then informed that they had to return to the GTA that very day for a very good reason.

“I have a job interview!” she announced.

After many months of unemployment and job searching, this was welcome news — as any parent of a young person this day and age would agree.

And, while not what I had envisaged after paying for four years of university education, it was an assistant manager job at a pet store — perfect for the passionate pet owner and animal lover that she is.

The next day, while lounging in the sand watching families cavort in gentle waves, I received a happy text: “I got the job!”

Upon my return home, I learned that my husband and son had survived their dog-sitting duties quite well. The only damage done was to a couple of plants in the back garden, trampled by an excited Alaska trying to capture one of many squirrels.

When my good friend in Newmarket called that same week to tell me her new York Region Pet Services business was doing well, describing with humour the Rottweilers, cats and other pets she was caring for, I decided that my week really was going to the dogs, but in a good way.

Name and shame deadly drivers This letter concerns the tragic accident June 29 claiming the life of one cyclist and seriously injuring another at the southwest corner of Dufferin and Glen Shields in Thornhill.

Recently, I had to stop at the lights at the same place going north when I noticed flowers placed at the foot of the utility pole knocked out by the two cars.

These drivers must be named and shamed, as there is no earthly reason why such fatal crashes should occur on a bright, sunshiny day.

At least the flowers and cards at the spot where the cyclist died show the goodness of people (unknown to the victim).

Cat care cost is a joke Re: Feline fans feel frisky as cat adoption centre OK’d, July 9.

Please tell me it’s a typo.

Surely Markham council didn’t agree to spend up to $200,000 to house a maximum of 17 cats at the Thornhill Community Centre?

Your July 9 issue reported that council budgeted up to $100,000 to implement this project and remodel a small room at the centre, including air conditioning for the cool cats (apparently not needed when seniors were using that room) and $100,000 a year, for starters, to run it.

They’re joking, right?

Unfortunately, given this council’s history of careless use of taxpayers’ money, its decision to give priority to cats over Markham’s many more pressing needs means the joke’s on us.

What about fate of existing cat shelter?

Re: Feline fans feel frisky as cat adoption centre OK’d, July 9.

While it is encouraging to read that Markham has, at last, taken notice of the fate of the cats picked up in the city, many of whom are euthanized, the method chosen should be questioned.

Markham has chosen the most expensive option in providing a new, paid-staffed outlet to increase adoptions.

which are already rescuing and adopting-out stray cats.

The largest is North Toronto Cat Rescue (NTCR), which has run a no-kill shelter in Markham for the last seven years.

In the last two years, 300 cats have been adopted from this shelter at no expense to the taxpayer.

NTCR runs as a registered charity, staffed entirely by volunteers. The cats are housed without cages and are fed and vetted while they await adoption.

To make matters worse, North Toronto Cat Rescue will soon be forced to close, as its shelter is scheduled for demolition to allow for more new housing.

It is difficult to understand the choice behind the possibility of losing an already running and proven volunteer shelter for an outlet employing paid staff and only housing 17 cats.

In the special education field, ‘hand over hand’ typically means showing a student how to complete an activity by putting the teacher’s hand on top of the student’s hand to model the activity.

The organization Hand Over Hand wanted to change this term to suit its mission.

Instead, imagine a team of people in a circle, each placing his or her hand over each person’s before a game to do a cheer.

“What our name means to us, is that peers can work together and support each other as a team to fulfill similar goals in an equitable way,” says the group’s website.

Hand Over Hand hosts its second annual Hand Over Hand Music Festival this Saturday, July 18 in Thornhill.

The festival was created to provide a safe and accessible environment for people of all abilities to enjoy music, food and other activities. Hundreds of people, including youth and young adults with disabilities will attend this event.

To make the festival accessible to people of all abilities, the event will have: sign language communication for all performances; all flat areas with no stairs or architectural barriers; a visual schedule; reduced volume; no bright, flashing lights for people with sensory sensitivities; a high number of volunteers to make sure all guests are accommodated; emcees announcing upcoming performers and raffle draws and seating in front of the performance areas.

Families fishin’ for summertime camping fun

Summer is here and, for many, that means camping.

But for those who can’t get out, or for those who may be unfamiliar with outdoor activities, there is a summer camp program offered in Vaughan that can help.

Bass Pro Shops hosts free family summer camp programs geared at getting people outside.

“It’s just about getting kids to come out and try their hand at some things they have never tried before,” said Loren Scott, events co-ordinator at the Vaughan store.

“We’re trying to get people excited about being outside,” she said. “We want kids to be thinking about being outdoors, we want them to be active. We want them to think about camping and fishing.”

Along with kid-friendly activities such as a catch-and-release pond, a BB shooting range and a casting challenge, there are also crafts and useful workshops.

Visitors can learn about fishing, archery, bird watching, camping and conservation awareness, kayaking, backyard adventure and shooting and hunting.

There are also workshops on travel and water safety.

“We don’t want anybody to get hurt,” said Scott. “It’s important.”

Every child camper receives a free lanyard and pins for each workshop.

And, so far, the kids love it, Scott said.

The stocked catch-and-release pond, which was only available last weekend, attracted a lot of attention.

Scott said some of the children who came out had never even held a rod before and some had never seen a fish up close.

“The kids are just loving it, they are ecstatic,” she said.

Maggie Gorska came to a camp program with her husband and her two children, Sebastian and Isabella.

“We are planning a camping trip later this summer,” she said. “We wanted to be prepared.”

She also said she wanted to bring the kids to the camp as a fun weekend activity.

And that is what it’s about, said Scott.

“It’s family fun,” she said. “It’s great to see families together.”

Additionally, getting outside is part of our national identity, she said.

“It’s very Canadian, this is us,” Scott said.

“We want to promote it.”

The camp program runs until July 26 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Sgt. Schmidt said the motorcycle joined Hwy. 401’s westbound traffic at a “high rate of speed” at Avenue Road at 9:30 p.m. July 8, before “lane splitting” and then smashing into the Sentra and then a black BMW. The Sentra is grey, between a 2007 and 2012 model.

Police search for car involved in fatal

Flames could be seen for several kilometres after a blaze broke out in a home under construction on Thornridge Drive in Thornhill, then spread to a neighbouring home.

The OPP is searching for a car involved in the death of a Vaughan motorcyclist, killed during a highway crash last week.

Police held a media conference Thursday in a bid to locate one of the cars the motorcycle slammed into before it crashed into another, killing the 25-year-old rider.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the police have debris, including a mirror, of the Nissan Sentra that was damaged in the crash.

Police also have dash cam footage from another vehicle, but aren’t releasing it yet.

Cause of house fire under investigation Fire officials were back on the scene Monday investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed two homes in Thornhill Sunday night.

At least two dozen firefighters were called out to the dinner-hour blaze on Thornridge Drive west of Yonge Street and south of Centre Street in Vaughan.

Flames and smoke could be seen for several kilometres.

No one was injured in the fire, which began at a house under construction just before 6:30 p.m., then spread to a neighbouring home.

It knocked out power to about seven dozen homes in the area.

York Regional Police sent out a series of tweets during the fire.

“Police and Fire on the way for the house on fire... 911 lines are jamming. We do have the call,” one read.

“Fire and Police on scene, smoke and flames visible, Thornridge Dr. closed to traffic,” another read.

“Neighbouring residences being evacuated, fire not yet under control,” a third read.

The following violations were reported: • Axia Resto Bar, F27-29-4300 Steeles Ave. E., Markham, was cited for storing utensils in a manner not preventing contamination.

• Peekaboo Child Care Centre, 3-17210 Yonge St., Newmarket, was cited for maintaining hazardous foods at an internal temperature between 4 C and 60 C. • All Thai Up, 1-22- Mulock Dr., Newmarket, was cited for failing to freeze food to a temperature of -18 C for storage.

• Ding Tai Fung, 18B-3235 Hwy. 7 E., Markham, was cited for failing to clean multi-service articles after use.

Markham’s Michelle Li earns tennis bronze, serving for gold Markham’s Michelle Li and Pan Am tennis partner Rachel Honderich of Toronto claimed a bronze medal in the women’s doubles’ competition Tuesday, after incurring a 2-0 loss against the top seeded tandem of Eva Lee and Paula Lynn Banana of the United States in their semifinal match.

As fate would have it, in singles competition, Li, a Richmond Hill High School graduate, will face her own partner and teammate Honderich in the gold medal match.

Peter Polansky’s time at the 2015 Pan American Games was shortlived.

The 27-year-old Thornhill resident, who competed for Canada in the men’s singles tennis competition, was eliminated in second round action by Roberto E. Cid of the Dominican Republic 2-0 at the Canadian Tennis Centre Saturday.

Dropping the first set 6-2 in a match that lasted just 37 minutes, Polansky took the 21-year-old Cid

to the limit in the second set before falling 7-5 in a match that lasted 63 minutes.

Polansky’s appearance on the court was his first tournament in ninth months, as he’s been in the process of recovering from wrist surgery after incurring an injury last year.

Moving to the United States at the age of 13, Cid played a first round match and defeated DaSilva Zormann of Brazil 2-1 Friday before he was eliminated in third round action by Castil Podlipnik of Chile 2-1 Sunday.

It’s not easy being perfect, but two students from Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy just graduated with perfect scores.

Shikha Patel and Amy Li are this year’s top graduating students in the York Catholic Dis-

trict School Board. Patel earned 100 percent in seven Grade 12 classes and Li scored 100 per cent in six of her Grade 12 classes.

Both Markham students were enrolled in the school’s International Baccalaureate program, which is considered more challenging and intensive than the

regular curriculum and took classes like biology and chemistry. Patel will study Health Sciences at McMaster University in September and Li will be taking Medical Sciences at Western.

Other stop students include Alicia Chung from St. Augustine Catholic High and Joshua

De Sousa Casal from St. Brother Andre, who both scored 97.5 per cent.

Thornhill’s St. Elizabeth’s top student was Nicholas Huang with 97 per cent, while St. Robert’s top score of 99.17 went to Rohit Malyala.

The York Region District Board

also released a list of its three top scholars, including Jonathan Wong of Bayview Secondary with a 99.66 percent average, followed

by Mario Vujinovic of Newmarket High with 99.33 per cent and Hanzhen Lin from Markham District High with a 99.2 per cent average.

Zachary Katzenstein captured his age group division at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s PGA of Ontario Junior Championship at Forest City National Golf Club in London the last weekend in June.

Competing in the Bantam Boys’ division, the 14-year-old Thornhill youth shot a first-round shortened 38 and a nine-over 81 the second day to capture the title with a two-day 119.

Katzenstein finished one stroke ahead of Bennett Ruby of Waterloo.

Among other Thornhill competitors who took to the fairways, Kelvin Young Wong Lim, 13, finished second in the Juvenile Boys’ bracket after carding a two-day 118 (39-79), two strokes behind Connor Rochon of Toronto.

In the Girls division, Ellice Hong, 16, finished second after recording a two-day 126 (40-86, two shots behind Diana McDonald of Kingston. Hong also captured the Girls’ division of the Closest-to-the-Pin competition.

Hilton Wilson left ‘huge mark’ on Kleinburg

H

ilton Wilson was well known as a highly regarded educator who was passionate about his Kleinburg community, sports and gardening.

Those who knew him best will also tell you that he marched to the beat of his own drummer.

“I would do things a certain way, but Hilton would never, ever do it that way. He’d have a way of his own,” his wife, Gail Wilson, said.

Born in 1941, Hilton Wilson grew up Goderich, the second youngest of six children.

His mother worked as a teacher, while his father was a general labourer.

“They didn’t have a lot of money, so he grew up doing things for himself,” Gail said.

After high school, Wilson headed to teachers’ college in Hamilton, eventually landing a job teaching elementary school in Etobicoke.

Wilson spent his summer vacations working toward a bachelor’s degree, with a double major in Math and English, at the University of Western Ontario in London.

That’s where, in 1964, he met Gail, also working toward a degree.

The couple married in 1965 and he took the next year off from teaching to finish his degree.

A passionate educator, Wilson eventually earned a masters in education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, at University of Toronto.

series for young children and dedicated a lot of time to research on childhood development, Gail said.

In 1969, the couple moved to Kleinburg, where they started a family.

Wilson was the proud father of two boys, Jeff and Brent.

It was through coaching his sons’ T-ball teams that Wilson first became involved in the community.

From there, he joined the legion of volunteers who help out with the annual Binder Twine Festival, starting out in the booth selling the infamous Kleinburgers, french fries and onion rings.

He quickly became a key member of the organizing committee, on which he served for 20 years including two as chairperson.

“He played a huge role on the Friday night setting up. During the day, he was the go-to person on the Saturday (and) on Sunday cleanup, he was always there,” said longtime friend Bob Klein. “He was just the go-to guy.”

Wilson was also a founding member of the Kleinburg Old Boys, a local volunteer group that established and runs a small museum at Klein House dedicated to preserving the village’s history.

“He just liked to know what was going on (in the community) and he didn’t like when things weren’t handled properly so he liked to be in there, getting it done,” Gail said. “He was a get-itdone person.”

Though he had no formal computer training, many people knew Wilson as the man to call if your machine was acting up.

Wearing a Kleinburg Binder Twine Festival button, Hilton Wilson could always be found setting up the community festival, cleaning up or generally getting things done. Whether it was gardening, sports, a community event or his family, he was a ‘go-to’ and ‘get it done’ guy.

Hilton Wilson passed away in March at age 73 after making a ‘huge mark’ on Kleinburg.

“If anyone had a computer problem and they’d call Hilton and he’d go and, usually, could solve it,” Gail said. “He loved solving problems.”

He was never one who sought the limelight.

“His friend Ron (Pearson) said recently that Hilton did so many things for Binder Twine that they didn’t realize because he just did those things,” Gail recalled. “He never really wanted to stand out. He just quietly did things.”

Along with his passion for Kleinburg, Wilson loved sports – especially baseball, basketball and golf.

He had Blue Jays season tickets for many years. And after retiring in 1997 as principal at Bloorlea Middle School, Wilson took up his golf clubs with gusto.

He also took charge of organizing regular golf games for the Kleinburg Old Boys, Klein said.

Wilson was fond of gardening, too, tending his massive vegetable garden. His tomato and wave petunia plants were sold at the Kleinburg Old Boys annual fundraising plant sale in May. Wilson was also a devoted grandfather to his four granddaughters – Madison, Avery, Sofie and Ellie.

A short time later, he developed a rare form of blood cancer called hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).

Wilson died at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto March 25 at age 73.

“If you were a friend of Hilton’s, you were a friend for life. He was that type of guy, ” Klein said. “I still have a hard time believing he’s gone. He left a huge mark on Kleinburg.”
