"I spent a few nights ... with two sleeping bags, two tarps wrapped around me," he said, adding his breath frosted around his face. "It’s not easy."

He has been homeless in York Region on and off for more than three years.

"It is like living one of your worst nightmares every day, until you get housing," he said.

But he wants to live a better life and is attending a new program offered by Inn From the Cold in Newmarket.

"I have been struggling for a while trying to get a little bit more ahead ... ever since I lost my house," he said. "This seemed something positive and in the right direction."

Getting Ahead is an eightweek, 16-session program that began Oct. 17 and is designed to help homeless individuals build the needed resources to improve their lives.

"I’m hoping something good can come from it, so we can help other people who are in similar situations," said Melodie Coulton, Doyon’s girlfriend, who was also in the program. "Because when you are struggling and you are homeless, any little bit counts."

Doyon has a job, but because of a number of circumstances, including injury and health issues, he struggles to find housing.

He started one of the tent cities in Newmarket and has rented places, he said, but there have been difficulties.

"A lot of the places that you can afford ... are places in the patch," he said, describing it as the "ghetto of Newmarket."

"There are people up drinking all night or smoking crack all night ... it is really hard to keep a job or get any sleep," he said.

Coulton, who has been homeless since June, would like to go back to school and find a job where she can help others.

Ann Watson, executive director with Inn From the Cold said they are running the program because it is difficult for their clients to get ahead.

"When they come to us, they just feel like they are stuck," added Ashley Martin, the Getting Ahead co-ordinator.

She described the program as "client led," that guides participants through a workbook to identify needed resources to get ahead.

"They are the ones leading their journey," she said.

This is the first time the program will run in York Region and is funded by a seed grant from the Ontario Trillium Foun-

dation.

The first section takes a look at the participants’ lives and uses visual aspects to self-examine their living situations.

"I’m projecting there is going to be a lot of raw emotion in the beginning," Martin said. "They know they are homeless, we don’t have to tell them that.

When you actually see it on paper, it becomes so much more real for them."

Then they look where they would like to be in three months, she said.

"The shorter goal, the more attainable it potentially may be," said Martin. "A lot of them can’t even think past one day."

She said even running an eight-week program is a big challenge, but Inn From the Cold tries to help remove barriers by providing transportation tickets, breakfast and lunch.

The program also helps guide the participants through "the hidden rules of the economic class" and learning about available resources, said Martin.

She hopes the participants feel a sense of accomplishment from the program.

"I just hope that it is a positive experience for them and they can see that there is a future," she said, adding the program is the easy part.

There is also an aftercare piece to ensure participants are still on track.

"And let them know you are one of their resources, and you are their support," she said.

Looking ahead, Doyon and Coulton want to find housing and use what they learn to give back.

"If you can learn something, get further ahead, then maybe one day you can be on the other side of it and be helping people," said Doyon.

There will be a second session of the program in January.

The Inn From the Cold winter shelter service will be opening Nov. 6 from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. until March.

They have a number of upcoming fundraisers to support their services and programs.

said, Metrolinx has bought up about 80 per cent of the GTHA’s rail lines for its transit expansion but does not own the two freight lines, CN, which runs through York Region, and CP, which runs along the Mississauga-Milton line.

What municipal politicians along the Mississauga-Milton line have suggested is that to offer all-day, two-way GO train service in future, all the CP freight train service be moved to the CN line through York Region, doubling the freight service on the York line.

It’s what the consultant hired

by Mississauga and Milton has called "The Missing Link," and it’s believed it will save $5.3 billion over the long term.

What upsets Mashregi and his colleagues is that no consultation with York Region communities was done before the suggestion to move CP rail traffic to York Region was suggested.

"They have two alternatives: to build additional tracks along Mississauga-Milton to handle the additional traffic or to move the freight to York, the cheaper alternative. So they want to do what’s easier and cheaper," said Mashregi.

"In doing that (the cheaper alternative) they (Mississauga and Milton) have no regard for the residents who live in the cities of Vaughan and Markham who will be impacted by potentially doubling the freight trains through their areas. It will benefit Mississauga and Milton to detriment of residents in Vaughan and Markham," Mashregi said.

"The politicians, and this is a bipartisan issue, have been very helpful and very supportive and that’s where we are right now. We want to keep up the pressure and make sure our views are known on this issue," Mashregi said.

PM must be ready for post-NAFTA world

U.S. president Donald Trump’s ongoing game of chicken with the North American Free Trade Agreement is no doubt wreaking havoc on the blood pressure levels of many business people across Canada.

Trump voiced his displeasure with NAFTA during the election campaign, but who could have guessed he would be consistent on the file after taking office?

After all, this is the man who promised to release his tax reforms, replace Obamacare with "insurance for everybody," create 25 million jobs, raise the minimum wage, not take vacations, end violent crime in Chicago and create an "artistically beautiful" wall on the Mexican border.

Trump’s distaste for NAFTA has not only survived the chaos of a dysfunctional White House, but has also infected talks, as American demands become increasingly untenable.

So, it’s likely many are wondering what happens if Trump scuttles the deal that has seen Canada and Mexico become the two largest destinations for U.S. exports since NAFTA was initiated in 1994.

The answer is no one is quite sure.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said Ottawa will be ready for any eventuality, but he’s not about to reveal any game plan.

Legally, experts suggest we would revert back to preNAFTA Canada-U. S. trade agreements. Failing that, our relations would be subject to World Trade Organization rules. But, would anyone doubt Trump’s willingness to impose duties on anything and everything, in blatant disregard for bilateral deals he had nothing to do with negotiating?

Dissolution of NAFTA alone could create seismic tremors for Canadian companies conditioned to having unfettered access to the U.S. Who knows what impact tariffs would have on Canada’s economy?

Of course, the U.S. Congress could have something to say about all this.

Congress wields constitutional power over international commerce/duties and it’s possible that it may act to preserve access to a enticing Mexican market so charmingly free of labour and environmental standards.

But that would mean more conflict with a president who is already irate over his inability to dismantle his predecessor’s health care program. NAFTA’s fate could even land in U.S. Supreme Court.

All this upheaval is not necessarily inevitable.

A sliver of hope emerged when Trump acknowledged the possibility of a two-way agreement with Canada.

Our PM needs to jump on this opportunity, should NAFTA talks stumble.

Trudeau may support a renewed NAFTA, but as he is charged with protecting Canada’s interests and not Mexico’s, he needs to be open to an exclusive free-trade agreement between Canada and the U.S.

We need a referendum on pot A couple weeks ago I attended a town hall in at the Cornell Centre in Markham where Jane Philpott and Bill Blair were lobbying for the legalization of pot.

One of the many questions asked of the former police chief was why if you say you are pursuing legalization is to keep it out of the hands of minors does your bill allow children from the age of 12 to 18 to possess up to five grams of weed which is enough make five single joints, and allow people 18 and over (high school and beyond) to carry up to 30 grams each.

His reply for the 200plus residents in the audience was that it’s just not true. I came home and re-

This pot bill and legalization will be a transformational change to our country and we cant trust the feds alone to make this our law, so I purpose we have a national referendum on legalization, decriminalization, or leave the laws as is.

Let the people of Canada decide on such an important issue and not just a select few whose purpose to legalization is very self serving.

Treatment of Muzzo sends wrong message Re: ’Another year dead and gone,’ Marco Muzzo moves to minimum security prison, Sept. 29.

It is hard to believe that Marco Muzzo is being allowed to enjoy unescorted

temporary absence from prison after 18 months of a 10-year sentence. That’s outrageous.

He had killed four innocent people and injured others due to his irresponsibility.

I believe the correctional service in Canada needs to have more empathy for the victims.

It is sending a wrong message to those who kill while impaired, knowing that they get away with murder. I wonder if being ultra rich has anything to do with this preferential treatment?

Commuters get peek at new TTC subway station

JEREMY GRIMALDI jgrimaldi@yrmg.com Hundreds of people, including families, dignitaries and future riders, got a chance to take a look at Vaughan much heralded new TTC subway station and plans for the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.

The event was held on Oct. 28 at the new subway station and allowed those keen to see the new digs a chance to venture into the station that will be open for business on Dec. 17. For anyone hoping to ride the subway, staff on site said travellers will be able to park at Portage Parkway and Jane Street where there will be 700 stalls.

TTC riders will eventually be able to walk underground to the subway from the nearby bus terminal. There will be a further 200 parking spots at the corner of Hwy. 7 and Edgeley Boulevard. All parking is temporary, the land set to eventually be redeveloped after the land is sold. The VMC will also house a nine-acre park, some 12,000 residential units by 2031 and will stretch from a new 15-storey KPMG tower to Hwy. 400. The Vaughan station is the long-awaited, multi-billion-dollar connection between the VMC station at Jane Street and Hwy. 7 and the City of Toronto.

Many years in the making and plagued by construction delays and cost overruns, the service is expected to carry at least 100,000 passengers a year to and from the VMC. The 8.6-kilometre extension north from Downsview station, with connections at York University and Hwy. 407 among others, is the longest in almost 40 years.

The extension will connect with York Region’s VIVA rapid transitway and potential GO Transit services along Hwy. 407.

The two other stations include Pioneer Village and Hwy. 407 stations. It’s now expected to take 40 minutes to get from Vaughan to Union Station.
