Markham city employees can say goodbye to extra paid vacation days at the end of the year.

Prior to breaking for the summer, city council — discussed in an in-camera meeting — quietly disbanded the longtime tradition of awarding Mayor’s Days, three paid holiday days in addition to the Christmas and New Year’s statutory vacation days.

The news has now been made official as staff members were sent a confidential memo explaining there will be no extra three days off with pay at the end of the year.

Iranian community speaks out against TD

Rather than make a last-minute decision at year’s end, council opted for a full staff report looking at holiday practices of other municipalities.

“I personally wanted the matter dealt with as a policy item in the mid-year, not under the rushof-the-moment in early December,” Mr. Heath said in an e-mail.

“Personnel policies should be developed with careful consideration.”

The staff report presented in an in-camera meeting, looked at other holiday policies.

An Ontario lawyer said this week he is planning to challenge the constitutionality of TD bank account closures affecting Iranian-Canadian customers.

The bank has closed the accounts of some ex-pats in a bid to comply with new government sanctions forbidding Canadian financial institutions from providing financial services to anyone in Iran or for the benefit of Iran.

The sanctions are intended to hamper the Iranian government’s nuclear program and to protest the regime’s record on human rights.

The move left many Iranian-Canadians scrambling to make alternative arrangements and complaining that they were unfairly targeted.

Emir Crowne, an associate professor with the faculty of law at the University of Windsor, said he intends to represent affected individuals by challenging the constitutionality of the regulations in federal court.

He said Monday he hopes to have something filed with the appropriate court or tribunal by the end of next week.

The Iranian Canadian Congress, meanwhile, has discussed the issue with TD officials and plans to investigate the possibility of holding public forums to explain the situation to members of the community.

Some ex-pats have called the bank move racist and a witch hunt, organizing a Facebook site and petition calling for the boycott and denouncement of TD Canada Trust.

“If TD wants to stop the flow of money to Canada by Iranian officials or people connected to the government of Iran there are better ways to do so without penalizing many innocent people,” Thornhill’s Sia Mansouri wrote on the online petition.

Right drinks add to BBQ experience

The art of tasting should apply to more than what’s on the grill during a back yard barbecue gathering.

Just ask Markham connoisseur Dean Christofilos, who has been in the wine, spirits and beer industry for 23 years, with numerous certificates and training in hospitality and tourism.

“In today’s rule, we drink what we like,” Mr. Christofilos said. “I taste one thing, you may taste something else.”

While there is still the general rule of thumb that white meats and seafood go with white wine and red meats go with red wine, Mr. Christofilos encouraged people to be openminded when it comes to trying new drinks, especially when invited to a back yard barbecue.

“When it’s free, you should be all over tasting different things,” said the self-proclaimed “seasonal drinker”, who is the GTA representative for Coyote’s Run Estate Winery in St. David’s village in Niagara-onthe-Lake.

“I enjoy and respect what I drink,” said Mr. Christofilos, who says there are a lot of great Ontario wines and beers available.

“If I want a beer and it’s warm, I’ll put ice cubes in. If you are cracking open a $90 bottle of wine, treat it as such. It’s about the experience of the moment.”

“There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to pairing wines with your grilled foods, just generalities that can get you going,” he said.

“Ultimately, it is your palate that you are seeking to please by the winepairing.”

If you are a guest at a barbecue and are unsure of what to bring, Mr. Christofilos said a safe wine would be unoaked chardonnay.

“You still have the characteristics of buttery, creamy and well-balanced on the tongue, but you don’t have an oak feeling,” he said.

Another safe option is pinot noir, which is a food-friendly pairing wine, Mr. Christofilos said.

“It fits a food chart whether it’s

grilled fish or a big, fat meaty burger,” he said.

In addition to wines and beers, always have non-alcoholic options for non-drinkers and to be a responsible host, Mr. Christofilos said.

“Typically, it’s one drink per hour or follow it with water,” he said.

Before you serve your guests, Mr. Christofilos said it’s worth investing time to find out some of the untold stories behind the bottles.

For example, there are actually coyotes on the Coyote’s Run Estate Winery, where each grape is hand-picked, but that’s something you’d likely only learn if you visited the winery or talked to somebody there. “Once you meet the people with passion, it tastes different,” Mr. Christofilos said. “It enhances the taste. It’s a talking point and it adds credibility.”

READERS SHARE RECIPES Thanks to reader Cosimina GattoFruitman, who responded to last week’s article by Michael Hayakawa on how to barbecue fish. She writes: Here’s my ‘go-to’ recipe for fish. You can also use salmon or halibut fillets. It makes a quick dinner any weeknight! (Serves 4).

2 tbsp. Soy Sauce 2 tbsp. Rice Wine Vinegar 1 tbsp. Liquid Honey 1 tbsp. Fresh Ginger, finely minced 2 cloves Garlic, finely minced 1 tsp. Kosher Salt 1/2 tsp. Ground Black Pepper 1.5 lb. Trout fillet (2 x 345g each fillet) 2 tbsp. Sesame Seeds 4 tbsp. Fresh Cilantro, finely chopped Oil for bbq grill Vegetable spray

Mix together soy, vinegar, honey, ginger, garlic, salt and pepper in a large glass baking dish.

Add the trout flesh side down and let marinate for a min. 30 minutes or up to 2 hours in the refrigerator.

Preheat barbecue grill on high. Clean and oil grill.

Spray skin side of trout well and place trout flesh side up on a barbecue grill and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Close the lid and grill trout for approx.

8 - 10 minutes in total (10 minutes per 1” thickness).

Remove from grill to a serving platter and sprinkle with fresh cilantro.

Serve with a mixture of stir fried baby bok choy and shitake mushrooms along with a side serving of brown rice.

B-ball net ban out of bounds

You see them on quiet cul-desacs (no one wants to use the term dead-end streets anymore) or little crescents and side streets where the vehicular traffic is almost strictly local and the occupancy of the homes includes young people of high school age or younger.

They are the “portable” basketball nets that sit in driveways or, in many cases, at the edge of the roadway, giving young people ample pavement — much more than the tiny modern driveway — on which to play some pickup three-on-three or just shoot solo baskets to pass the time.

Problem is that for the nets to be safe and not a tipping hazard, the homeowner typically needs to fill the base of the apparatus with water or sand — making the net virtually immovable between uses.

Now residents of at least one Markham street say they have been put on notice by bylaw enforcement officers that nets that sit too close to the curb are on city property. They’ve been told the structures present a hazard to vehicles and that, if the nets aren’t removed when not in use, the city will remove them.

Heavy-handed overreaction, some might say? And not practical, consid-

ering the weighted base holding the nets in place?

It turns out other Ontario municipalities have grappled with the same concerns over the years.

In fact these “boulevard bylaws” are fairly common across the province, including clauses that restrict sports equipment, tall plants, frontyard gardens and more.

What’s not as clear is whether or not cities ever try to enforce these bylaws, except in extreme cases where there is an obvious risk to vehicles or the public.

It’s disappointing to hear even one street, let alone the entire community, may be subjected to a curbside basketball net ban.

Many studies tell us, as parents will confirm, that we are facing an epidemic of youth inactivity spawned by the lure of YouTube videos, Internet gaming, iPods, iPads and cellphones.

(If humans continue to evolve based on survival of the fittest, one can imagine a future species of humans with very long thumbs — all the better to work a game console with.)

If there are young people outdoors shooting hoops, we should be celebrating that fact, not trying to make life difficult for them.

Confused by food labels? There’s an app for that ife has never been more of a balancing act than it is today.

Time is often at a premium.

Grocery shopping can be a hurried chore and despite good intentions, often we don’t read labels carefully to make the most healthy food choices.

Food labels have become notorious for misleading and confusing consumers. Meaningless claims can be manipulated to sound enticing. Ingredients can be declared by names we don’t recognize and nutrition information can be provided based on a serving size that we deem unrealistic.

Thankfully, there are apps that can help you navigate grocery aisles — even when faced with time constraints.

But which one should you choose?

Look for Canadian content: Look for apps that have a Canadian focus or include information about ingredients, claims and nutrition facts tables found on Canadian labels.

If you are unsure if Canadian content is included, seek clarification from the company that created the app.

Take extra care when apps include product-specific allergy information. It

Consider the source: Look for apps that have been created by creditable companies, associations or individuals and that reference official government regulations.

If you do not recognize the source, go to its website for more information.

Look for a quick rating system: While shopping, you can use apps to help navigate food labels quickly. Look for apps that incorporate a speedy safety rating system for ingredients such as colour-coded happy and sad faces or check and x marks.

Commonly, these apps also contain detailed information about ingredients such as potential health effects, their function in food and if they are derived from animal, plant, synthetic or genetically modified sources.

Personalize for efficiency: The large volume of information in some generic apps may make them too cumbersome to navigate while shopping.

Take the time to look for apps that allow you to add personal settings. For example, if you are a vegetarian, some apps will allow you to filter and search ingredients based on this requirement.

Personalizing an app before shopping will help with efficiency at the store.

Consider ease of navigation: If you do not consider yourself to be “tech savvy” look for an app that you can

navigate easily.

Before purchasing, check an apps’ website for an explanation of how it works.

Also check out customer reviews of apps you are considering.

Luckily, apps are typically affordable and sometimes free, so you may want to consider downloading a few to find the one that is right for you.

The easier it is to navigate, the better the chances you will use it.

Don’t have a smartphone or tablet?

Don’t despair.

Carry a book about food labels or a food additive dictionary when shopping for food.

Again, look for Canadian content, creditable sources and ease of use.

Empower yourself with the information you need to make healthy and informed food choices.

Spanish dancing, candid poems mixed with pain

Once upon a time, Spanish dancing set her free.

Now Mary Lipton’s castanets have been put away, replaced with a walker and a cane.

At 88, she doesn’t dance anymore, but she has found something else.

For this Thornhill woman, freedom comes in poetry and the rhythm of her words.

Like anyone with such a long life, Ms Lipton has seen much of this world, the good, the bad, the joy and the pain. She was kidnapped as a child, suffered health ailments and family conflict and lost her beloved husband to Alzheimers.

She also watched flowers bloom, seasons change and her daughter, Susan Kadis, rise to success as Thornhill’s Liberal member of Parliament.

Rather than keep those experiences and observations to herself, however, she has chosen to share them with others in poetic form. What began as a personal catharsis

became a story of life in poems, published in a book entitled Behind the Spanish Wall.

It was during a particularly difficult time in her life, when her youngest son was butting heads with her husband, who was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder — after seeing his buddy’s head blown off in Belgium — and soon-to-be-diagnosed Alzheimers, that Ms Lipton turned to poetry-writing to express her distress.

KIDNAPPED AT AGE 3 ‘The Challenge’ is one of scores of poems she spun out over the ensuing years.

In one, she describes her mother’s frantic search when a stranger stole her away at the age of 3.

“Another woman said she saw them go to a nearby village / where the abductor had her home / and knew she had no child of her own,” Ms Lipton writes, describing how her mother ran barefoot across the hot sand to find her hidden inside the stranger’s home.

She met her husband at the age of 14, watched him leave for war when he was 15 and come back traumatized by what he saw there, then disappear again behind the wall See WRITER’S, page 8.

They are candid revelations one normally reserves for oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pillow, but which she felt compelled to share, knowing how emotions can link us all.

And they seem to have touched a chord.

Her poem about her husbandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s memory loss, called â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;If Love Alone Could Bring You Backâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, was published in 2003 by the Alzheimers Society. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Never Againâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; was read at the

child. The night before surgery, she planned to ensure she would have no more children, an intern asked her if she would mind if surgeons took â&#x20AC;&#x153;a little piece of muscle ... at the most a quarter of an inchâ&#x20AC;? to biopsy, for research into a birth defect that shortened the tendons above her achilles heels.

She awoke with the lower half of her leg covered in bandage and more pain there than from the major surgery to her reproductive organs.

Holocaust memorial at Earle Bales park several years ago, two other poems were included in an anthology and she was asked by the Reena Foundation to scribe a poem about the agencyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work with disabled.

Like her poetry, Spanish dancing came to her later in life; like her poetry, it came mixed with pain. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t start dancing until they cut the complete muscle out of my leg.â&#x20AC;? She reveals a calf marred by surgery gone wrong back in 1958.

Among the exercises they gave her was a little heel-to-toe move on a wooden step.

It diminished the pain, but it did something more. It reminded her of Spanish gypsy dancer Carmen Amaya. She decided it was time to learn to dance. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I figured itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s already cut, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s too late, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not going to stop myself.â&#x20AC;?

The long dress of Flamenco dance â&#x20AC;&#x201D; which covered her disfigured leg â&#x20AC;&#x201D; was a bonus.

On a small stage in her home, she held jam sessions twice a year with dancers from Mexico and Spain and the parties lasted for hours.

A car accident in December damaged her fingers and she doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t write much anymore, but she still can pen a poem when she needs to, like the recent 60th wedding anniversary of friends.

A mosquito pool in Newmarket has tested positive for West Nile virus, regional officials reported last week.

The first West Nile virus mosquito reported in York Region, the mosquitoes were trapped close to the intersection of Davis Drive and Prospect Street.

Treatment of catch basins will continue in addition to necessary treatment of nearby stagnant water sources such as roadside ditches on public property.

You are advised to clean up standing water around your home where mosquitoes are likely to breed and make sure screens on your home are tightly fitted and in good

condition, cover up and use insect repellent when outdoors and minimize outdoor activities when mosquitoes are most active such as dusk and dawn.

If you are concerned about catch basins on your property, place a mesh screen over the catch basin to prevent mosquitoes.

Back yard catch basins on private property can be treated upon request.

Symptoms of West Nile virus include fever, muscle weakness, stiff neck, confusion, severe headache and a sudden sensitivity to light.

In rare cases, the virus can cause serious neurological illness including encephalitis.

Like many people, cancer has touched the lives of Michelle Kofman and Caterina Iannazzo.

But unlike many, the Thornhill neighbours are doing something about it.

“My grandfather is a recent cancer survivor,” says Ms Iannazzo.

“Michelle’s mother is a cancer survivor for 25 years. We both have countless friends who are touched by cancer as well in their families.”

This year, the women are taking action to eradicate the disease and

The Thornhill event begins and ends at Thornlea Secondary School and includes a 2.5, 5 and 10 kilometre route.

The organizing committee plans every aspect of the race, including entertainment, food and beverage, route and site management, administration, and establishing an energetic group of volunteers.

The run commemorates Terry Fox, a young cancer patient and amputee who ran across Canada raising money for cancer research.

When it comes to the city’s allegiance, it is out with the old and in with the new.

A new flag, that is.

As part of the rollover into new city status, city officials waved a new flag, which incorporates some of the city’s historical milestones.

The new flag is similar to the former one that encompasses a maple leaf and a beaver centred in a red and white circle on a blue backdrop.

But the word town is removed and replaced with city. The dates 1850, 1872, 1971 and 2012 were also added to represent the city’s turning points.

Markham Township was officially incorporated in 1850, after the passing of the Baldwin Act, which established a municipal form of responsible government.

In 1872, Markham Village was formed and adjacent villages began to grow and prosper. Markham Township became one of nine municipalities under the York Region banner in 1971 and its boundaries were officially established.

And this year, Markham became Canada’s sixteenth

Flag incorporates important dates in Markham’s history. largest city, with some 310,000 residents – trailing behind London by about 55,000 residents and ahead of Vaughan by about more than 20,000 residents.

The city purchased 17 regular sized flags that will be flown over city own facilities such as community centres, fire stations, chamber of commerce office and the Civic Centre.

There was also one flag purchased for the region and one ceremonial flag.

Since there was no new design, there are no concept or design charges to the city for the new flags. The total cost was about $1,800.

The flag is very similar to the city’s corporate seal, Mayor Frank Scarpitti said.

“That was deliberate,”

he said. “We didn’t want the change from town to city to launch a new branding exercise.”

When it comes to corporate stationary, the city is using up the old notes and business cards prior to ordering new ones, he said.

“We need to use up our current stock,” he said. “The logo isn’t changing. It is just a footnote on letterhead.”

Stationary is produced on an as-needed basis, he said.

The municipal status won’t affect the city’s community centres or maintenance crews as the majority either display the prominent check mark logo or the city’s coat of arms.

“If there is a change, it will be over time,” Mr. Scarpitti said.

last week, “as a Canadian of Iranian heritage ... I can attest to the confusion and dismay in the community. In this highly politicized and polarized world, the alienation and demonization of our own citizens is just about the last thing we need.”

Richmond Hill resident Saeed Soltanpour said he is considering organizing a class-action lawsuit, saying that while he is against money laundering (by the Iranian regime), the Canadian government should meet with members of the Iranian community to work out a solution that doesn’t impact innocent newcomers. ”We need to have a town hall meeting to tell the community that this is the problem, we have to find the solution, the past is gone, let’s work together.”

He accused Richmond Hill MPP Reza Moridi of failing to support the large Iranian ex-pat community in south York Region and described the MPP’s letter to the president and CEO of TD Bank Group “crocodile tears”.

Mr. Moridi, who was born in Iran, sent a letter to TD suggesting the government directives may have been misinterpreted.

“Iranians living in Canada have come here to escape oppression and have already endured hardship and loss by the regime in Iran,” he wrote. “Causing further strain for them for the indiscretions of the people in power in their homeland is not who we are as Canadians.”

Mr. Moridi said he and his staff have been working hard on the issue, and he has received countless emails from across the country thanking him for his support.

“I am MPP for Richmond Hill, not MPP for Iranians in the whole country,” he said.

“This is not an easy issue. We know there are people here who are directly connected to the Iranian regime and sympathetic to the regime.

But there are also many Iranians who come to this country because of the existence of the regime.”

He said many retired here and depend on their pension or other income from Iran, but may have given TD their former Iran address — something he explained to bank officials and the bank has promised to address.

Tim Hockey, president and CEO of TD Canada Trust, met with the Canadian Iranian Congress last week and the congress’ vicepresident Kaveh Shahrooz said the bank recognizes the process was flawed and promised to re-consider activating some accounts.

“It’s an important first step but the issue is not completely resolved,” he said. “We are happy someone at the CEO level met with us on this, showing they’re taking it seriously.”

An anesthesiologist at Southlake Regional Health Centre is the new critical care lead for the Central Local Health Integration Network.

Dr. Michael Sullivan, who has held a number of administrative appointments in addition to his clinical practice at Southlake, will work with the LHIN’s emergency department and primary care leads to advance quality and improve access and system integration for people in the LHIN’s communities, which include York Region.

Dr. Sullivan is also responsible for advising LHIN CEO Kim Baker on local resource allocation, priority setting, critical care service delivery and surge capacity planning.

He will continue to practise medicine at Southlake.

Spinathon helps Reena Foundation Spend a day with the community at the second annual Spinathon and Family Fun

Day, hosted by the Reena Foundation.

The day will feature food, music, children’s area, zumba and aerobics sessions, swimming and vendors. Twenty-four teams are being formed by local companies to compete in the spinathon. In addition to proceeds from the event, the teams alone will raise $50,000 for the foundation.

The Reena Foundation provides support programs for people with developmental disabilities. With 38 centres in the GTA, it works to ensure a better quality of life for affected individuals and their families.

Community hub a legacy for the future

Jacob Schwartz is a lucky 15-year-old.

Though he was diagnosed at birth with Canavan disease, a usually fatal illness that targets the central nervous system, virtually robbing its victims of most basic human functions such as sight, speech, cognitive abilities and mobility, Jacob still has much going for him.

His parents, Ellen and Jeff, are endearing optimists who have given Jacob much but have also learned so much from him.

Together, the family is a true reflection of both strength and vision. They have never seen Canavan as a “disease”. Instead, they have looked for ways to transform Jacob’s plight into community initiatives that give Jacob’s challenges meaning.

The Schwartz family founded “Jacob’s Ladder” (the Canadian Foundation for the Control of Neurodegenerative Disease) in 1998 to help other families deal with this devastating disease.

But it didn’t end there.

As plans progressed through the United Jewish

Appeal Federation’s Tomorrow Campaign for a stateof-the-art Jewish communal axis, leadership of the community wanted to find ways to give back to the GTA. They wanted a real “community” hub that would incorporate recreation, education, fitness, arts and inclusion.

They wanted a community centre where all, regardless of race, faith or ability would find a comfortable home.

And so was born the Joseph and Wolf Lebovic Community Campus. A veritable smorgasbord of life and activity that will include an educational facility, a Jewish community centre with inclusive and accessible physical and recreational facilities as well as a health and wellness centre to be run by Mount Sinai Hospital, including a family health team, services for the elderly and a new centre for the developmentally handicapped.

The Jacob’s Ladder Therapeutic Pool is but one example of many more in which members of the over 200,000 strong Jewish GTA community looks for ways to enhance our region and the Joseph and Wolf Lebovic Jewish Community Campus stands as a proud symbol of this generosity.

Another gift through this unique shopping centre of services is the Reena Community Residence, the largest and most significant project undertaken by Reena in its history.

Reena, an agency that supports Jewish values and tradition, helps integrate and work with people dealing with developmental disabilities.

It is an inclusive agency open to all, no matter your faith or background.

Explains Sandy Keshen, president & CEO of Reena: “This 80,000 sq. ft. building will provide housing and support for up to 84 people.

Individuals from Circle of Care, Jewish Family & Child, as well as Reena will include the frail elderly, those with mental health and/or developmental disabilities, young adults, women and children fleeing abuse and families with a member requiring support.”

Yet it is more than just a supportive residence. It is in fact a distinctive and transformative initiative where inclusion means just that.

Those with disabilities will be integrated thoroughly with those who have no disabilities, providing a natural and normative interaction and environment. The way it really should be.

Historically the Jewish community has been a leader in areas of medicine, social justice, human rights and dignity. It has been this way because we as a people have always understood both the challenges and pain life brings.

We are a small community that has always been grateful to the wider hub of humanity which, especially as we entered the 21st century, has allowed us to flourish by working towards eradicating hatred, anti-Semitism and bigotry.

Thus countries such as Canada have become an incubator for our success and we are honoured to be able to share that success with the wider community.

Ted Sokolsky, president and CEO of UJA Federation of Greater Toronto summed it up best: “The new Lebovic campus,” he told me, “will be a place that serves everyone. It will help heal, inform, educate, strengthen and empower people from one convenient central location”.

A campus that can bring a smile to one young boy like Jacob and the many others whose lives are so challenged makes it a welcome legacy for the future.

“Basically, what we do in Markham is special,” Mr. Heath said. “We have very good staff. But it was time to bring this practice to a close.”

But those days will be missed by the city’s union employees.

“We serve the public,” city employee and acting president for the Canadian Union of Public Employees for the 905 area, Guila Cukier said.

“We look forward to those days to spend some time with our families.”

Mayor’s Days are not part of union employees’ contracts, Ms Cukier added.

“Those are not vital to our contract,” she said. “We understand the city’s move.”

In recent years, the city has received flack from residents, calling Mayor’s Days an added expense taxpayers don’t need.

But the extra vacation days didn’t have a dollar amount attached, Mr. Heath said.

“There wasn’t a cash bonus,” he said. “We weren’t giving money away. Instead, those days cut into productivity. We were getting less production for the same salary.”

Glenn Babcock has been legally blind since birth.

The handicap hasn’t deterred the 49-year-old Thornhill resident from playing the sport he loves.

Taking to the Cardinal Golf Club’s West Course near Kettleby along with his playing party of Thornhill resident Rich Kozlozski and Brian Speer of Pickering for the 20th annual Colin Kressler Charity Golf Tournament Thursday, Babock accomplished something a lot of golfers never do.

Using his nine iron on the par

three 11th hole, measuring some 120 yards that also served as a contest hole in which the participant had to make a better shot than the host, Babcock shot a hole-in-one.

“I didn’t believe the ball went in the hole at first until I took it out of the hole,” Babock, a 19 handicap golfer said. “It is pretty exciting.”

With less than 10-per-cent vision in both eyes, Babcock said he’s been playing golf since age 5 growing up in Nova Scotia. Much of which he learned was through family members including his father, Barry, a golf pro at the Paragon Golf Club in Kingston, N.S.

“Everyone in my family played golf. But being blind, I can’t play it on my own. I had family members come out with me until I was 16 when I could then have my friends go out with me.

“When I play I have to have someone point me in the right direction,” he said.

Babcock’s ace came on the heels of his return from Truro, N.S. where he was one of 49 golfers to play in the Canadian Blind Golf Championships and 54 entrants representing 15 different countries at the World Blind Golf Championships.

While Babcock did not win

either event, he was excited to be in both and felt he played well.

Babcock takes great interest in the cause of those who want to play golf but are visually impaired. He serves on the board for the Ontario Visually Impaired Golfers.

With some 35 to 40 members from Southern Ontario, Babcock said their organization is one of the largest of its kind in the world.

The battle their organization faces, he said, is creating awareness, especially for younger people.

“When we started out 20 years ago a lot of our members were older and we’ve had new members come

in who at one time were sighted but then lost their vision and are older.

“We still need to get the message out to younger people — kids, teenagers and young adults. As long as they have someone supportive, a friend or family member, they can go out and play golf and do quite well,” he said.

During Thursday’s outing, which had a full field of 150 golfers, Babock said they raised close to $8,500 to promote golf for the blind and visually impaired.

Golfers chip in bigtime to support community residence

A new home for the developmentally delayed in Vaughan scored in a big way last week when 100 golfers raised the most money ever at a single day charity event at Wooden Sticks Golf Club.

The July 10 fundraiser raised more than $100,000 for Reena’s new community residence which is set to open in Thornhill next month.

“Last year’s tournament was held on a cold and rainy day but,

we still raised over $30,000,” said Steven Libfeld, chairperson of the second annual event. “This year, the weather co-operated and we more than tripled the amount raised and I’m very thankful to all that came out to support us.”

Money raised at the Swinging for Reena charity tournament at the Uxbridge course will go to the capital campaign for Reena, a nonprofit organization that helps those with developmental disabilities and their families.

The campaign hopes to raise $9

million for its new residence near Bathurst Street and Rutherford.

The first of 84 residents are expected to move into their units Aug. 15, with a grand opening set for Sept. 14.

SEMI-INDEPENDENT LIVING Residents will include 54 Reena clients with developmental disabilities, along with tenants from the March of Dimes, Jewish Family and Child Services and Circle of Care, said Gary Sim, president of Reena Foundation.

The one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments provide semiindependent living in an integrated environment.

It is hoped that the healthy elderly and those with physical disabilities will live alongside those with developmental disabilities and befriend and support one another, Mr. Sim said.

As well, the Lebovic Campus, with its fitness centre, agencies and wellness clinic are a short walk away as is a high school where students can obtain community ser-

vice hours volunteering with the disabled, he said.

“We hope it will help the young people to accept them and erase the stigmatism for generations to come.”

Reena provides 38 homes with services for more than 400 residents in the GTA. Proceeds from the golf tournament take the Reena residence campaign to more than $7.6 million and the next fundraiser — a three-hour spinathon — is set for Aug. 18.

It is with profound sadness that family and friends part with Russell Charles Urquhart B.Ed, M.Ed. from cancer at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital on Monday, July 23, 2012.

Russell is now in the arms of his beloved wife Lucille Reta Urquhart (nee Harvey), who passed away five years ago. Also known as 'Bud', he is brother to Louis, Glen, Hazel and Ivan Urquhart.

Left to mourn this independent, humorous, hard-working and protective father, are his children: Roderick Urquhart (Aase), Adrienne Urquhart, Tracy Campbell (Richard) and beloved granddaughters Taryn and Marley Campbell.

Russ, a retired public school principal with York County Board of Education, was very active right until his last days. Having served in the Royal Canadian Corps. of Signals, he joined the 16th AAOR and was stationed in both England and Europe during the Second World War. A voracious reader, having read many books about the war, he regaled all around with his spirited storytelling.

The family would like to thank the caring staff of CCAC, Mackenzie Health and Veterans Affairs Canada.

An informal Celebration of Life for his family to receive friends and relatives will be held Wednesday, August 1st from 2-4 p.m. at The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 385, 105 Industrial Pkwy N. in Aurora, ON.
