Round One - Falls Creek

The good news for everyone reading this, is that the worst of the pre frozen snow has passed and the temperatures have plummeted producing substantial quantities of the good stuff. Forecasts are predicting snow accumulation of anything from 35-103cm to fall over the next 15 days at Falls Creek, with the majority of this to occur THIS WEEKEND. From Thursday the 6th, until Monday the 10th of July, you should be waking up to freshies every morning, with anywhere between 40cms or 69cms expected to have fallen during this time. The good news doesn’t stop there either. Another blast is forecast the following weekend too.

Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.

The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

What’s more, with a bit of luck, some fresh snow and a bit of wind, that venerable ‘old girl’ the International Poma could well be turning early in July too.

Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

A Resort Entry Vehicle Permit is required for your vehicle when entering the resort between 10th June and 1st October 2023. The entrance to the resort is at Howman’s Gap, approximately 4km below the village. Permits can be pre-purchased and printed at home prior to arriving at the resort, or purchased at the resort entrance ticket office. The day rate is $56 if you purchase your entry permit on-line. An additional $7 applies to purchases at the ticket box. If arriving after 5pm and departing the resort prior to midnight on the same day, resort entry is free!

Season Entry Permits are available for purchase on-line for $550 and can be collected at Howman’s Gap Ticket Office or the Visitor Information Centre.

Operating from the Terminal Building on Bogong High Plains Rd, the Accommodation Transfer service will transport you, your group and your luggage to your accommodation in the village. Tickets can be pre-purchased online or at the ATS terminal.

Post a good powder dump, one of my favourite areas to ski is the Maze, however it is heavily dependent on natural snow fall. This predicted storm will be critical in laying sufficient foundations to enable the outstanding and very hard-working grooming teams of Falls Creek Ski Lifts to get in there and lay down a firm base. Keeping in mind that opening runs is a combination of many different influences, with Falls Creek Ski Patrols’ view of safety

being a major deciding factor, particularly as this relates to both skier safety and also the ability for patrol to successfully evacuate and transport guests out of the area, in the event of a serious accident.

At the time of writing, several areas in the Maze still have insufficient cover to do this safely or are being cleaned up following the extraordinary conditions which caused innumerable trees to collapse and branches to break under the weight of rime and snow that had accumulated. The phenomenon, more specifically the sheer volume of rime ice had not been seen by our patrol team since the early 1990’s. The previous storm deposited substantial accumulation in many of the snow gums in the ski field area, particularly above the 1650m mark. Post that storm, a prolonged period of foggy days and humid conditions contributed to the ‘perfect storm’ for various types of rime to accumulate, with tree limbs and branches buckling and subsequently loaded with cannon balls of ice hanging perilously above and across many ski runs. By the time you’ve read this however, we are sure to be good to go and getting amongst it in the Maze.

Insofar as ‘institutions’ go, The Falls Creek Hotel has the bone fides. With a family history in the resort dating back

to 1965, they have been instrumental in much of the resort’s development and in building its reputation too.

No more so than ‘Harvey Hour,’ held Tuesdays & Thursdays, and also their iconic balcony views of the Summit. The food’s not bad up their either. The lucky in-house guests enjoy dinner, bed & breakfast, with the restaurant open to the public for lunch. On a blue-sky day, it’s a magical spot to enjoy an awesome food offering of traditional pub favourites. No more so than the Prime cut steak sandwich, which IMO is the best in the North East! The restaurant is hugely popular with the locals, so bookings are essential. Do yourself a favour, book a table with friends, ski in (you may not ski out on

WHY RENT NOT BUY Re-Purposing Fashion Wear

Since opening my Falls Creek shop five days ago on Saturday 1 July, I’ve been inundated with requests to buy my vintage one-piece snow suits, jumpers, bib & brace pants and jackets.

People ask me why there are no price tags on any of the vintage clothing I have in my store multiple times a day. The answer is simple. I had planned to rent out the clothing.

Vintage snow suit/snow clothing rental is available in several places in Canada & America. It is definitely a niche snow fashion business option, but for the businesses that I’ve researched at least, it’s proven to be highly desirable and successful. It’s a fun option for family or friends dress up days when on holiday. Many people factor into their one week at the snow ‘onesie day’ or ‘retro day’ (what they really mean is vintage day, but that was the topic of last week’s article…) for a blue-sky day during their trip to make memories and, quite possibly, to stand out and make a statement on the hill.

Since opening my store, the requests to buy my vintage have been coming in daily thick and fast. Never one to ignore customer feedback, I’ve pivoted and have begun pricing up the vintage clothing for sale, adding sales tickets as quickly as I can on items in addition to the rental prices.

If you see something that you love and it doesn’t yet have a sale price tag on it, bring the jumper or suit over and ask me for the price. I’ll look it up and let you know ASAP. Most of the time it only takes a few minutes. Sometimes though, a customer picks out something from early in my collecting journey, and the search through the spreadsheets can take a little longer as I backtrack through decades of Excel files (each year got its own file… it made sense at the time when it was just me being a ski nerd keeping track of my collection!).

I’m still going to rent out my vintage snow fashion this season. Why? I decide to open Australia’s first vintage snow clothing hire business to help us all to embrace circular fashion and do my bit for environmental sustainability.

Selling some of the collection does give me an iron clad reason to keep buying more vintage snow suits, so I’m not going to complain about that turn of events!

However, renting clothing is a great way for people to have access to ‘new to them’ clothing at a fraction of the cost of buying the item. It is environmentally friendly as it is re-using and, at times, remaking or repurposing an existing item that has already been manufactured and is out in the world. I’ve had over 20 items repaired by Remote Equipment Repairs over the years and have a parcel from RER trucking its way to Falls as I write this ready to put on the shops racks.

Done It Again!

Last Saturday 1st July saw the much anticipated return of the Falls Creek Race Club Fundraising Auction Night, the biggest social event of the Race Club calendar. With loud and silent auctions being enthusiastically embraced by all attendees, everyone had wonderful night.

Thank you to St Falls for providing delicious food, amazing service and the venue – the wonderful, ‘full of character’ Nelse Lodge.

And thank you to our donors who provided products, vouchers, or money to the event. We could not do this without you and your generosity is greatly appreciated. Your donations helped the club raise over $30,000 - an incredible result for the Race Club as these funds go toward the purchase of vital training equipment as well as a step towards our goal of a new clubhouse. Yuki Birds Sessions 2023

Yes, we are stoked to announce that we are back on the road with one of our favourite days of the year, YUKI BIRDS! Come join for a day of fun with some other legends on the hill. Throw out some high fives, try a new trick in the park and explore the mountain with the crew. Where & When? Falls Creek – next Saturday 15th July, then at Mt Buller on the 22nd and at Perisher on the 29th. Who can enjoy this? You and your buddies. Share it around and come up with your pals.

What if I am a skier? Can you give a hi 5 and be a bad ass? Sweet, you're in. Skiers are 100% welcomed with open arms!

I'm a guy, can I still come? HELL NO! But, we are having a WAG's group for guys, HAB's (Husbands and boyfriends). So you can drop your man friend off and he can be minded for the day while you get after it!

(Although we want everyone to partake, please note that to be able to register, we need to ensure that you are at a level where you feel comfortable cruising down a blue run).

What’s Going Down? The aim of our Yuki Birds Sessions is to bring women together as well as our LGBTQIA+ crew through snowboarding and skiing. We aim to help breakdown the intimidation barriers around entering, riding and progressing in the park and around the mountain.

Meet up with the crew in the morning before lapping the park or cruising the resort with your new mates in small groups, each with 1-2 of our expert Yuki team leaders. Top it all off with the après session, including a special Yuki Birds cocktail.

SA Interschools

More than 250 South Australian school children will be racing down the slopes of Falls Creek later this month as part of Snow Australia's Interschools Competition. The annual competition, which has been run by the South Australian Snowsport Association for the past three decades, focuses on promoting snowsports for SA residents. SASKI is the only recognised state body for snow sports in South Australia.

The SA Interschools Snowsport Championships, being held from July 19 to 21, are part of the National Interschools program run by Snow Australia. The SA-organised event provides an opportunity for SA primary and secondary students to learn and showcase their skiing or snowboarding skills.

Children can enter individually as well as having the ability to combine as a pair, trio or foursome to represent a school. Beginners to experienced skiers and snowboarders are all welcome as the event has a participation focus.

The SA Interschools event this year will comprise alpine, moguls, ski cross, snowboard cross and snowboard giant slalom events.

Harvey Hour

Damon Stone has been playing/singing/ songwriting professionally for over 30 years in original and cover bands in the Perth, Melbourne and Queensland music scene.

Damon has toured singing , playing sax, guitar and 12 string acoustic in a Pink Floyd Project with the Adelaide, Auckland, Darwin and Queensland Philharmonic Orchestras to sold out arenas/concert halls over the last 10 years.

He tours the Whitsundays and Queensland as a solo acoustic and in party bands multiple times a year and has achieved over 200 trips to the region in the last 20 years.

Damon has over 200 original songs registered with APRA and has three albums which he wrote , played , sung , recorded, produced and mixed.

Damon played sax in the Tina Arena Band at the Millennium Concert at Crown Casino; has toured with blues artists playing sax with 8ball Atkien and Jimi Hocking (screaming jets, angels)

Add to this some jamming on stage with members of: Eric Clapton Band, Paul Simon Band, Hothouse Flowers, The Smithereens, Jeff Healey, The Angels, John Farnham band, Noiseworks, Jimmy Barnes, Diesel and many more.

Damon's new original band ‘Stone’ has opened for Daryl Braithwaite, James Reyne and more recently ‘10CC.’ The band’s first single ‘Here We Are’ has been mixed by Steve James (producer- Sex Pistols, Thin Lizzy, The Jam )

With that amount of experience and talent then you can pretty well guarantee that this week’s Harvey Hours are going to go off! Don’t miss out! •

Astra Lodge

Warde Elliot - Playing at Astra 12 July & 30 August from 4pm – 6pm

Warde Elliott is a singer, songwriter and a story teller who grew up in the Riverina, NSW in the small town of Leeton who has, for many years, performed throughout Australia and abroad and released four original albums. The latest two albums ‘Tall Stories’ and ‘Most Things Lose Their Shine’ are both available through Spotify, Apple Music etc. The albums feature some of Melbourne’s finest musicians and Warde’s song-writing has received accolades from the USA International Songwriting Competition, Australian Songwriters Competition and Unsigned Only (USA).

Warde has performed in Falls Creek for the past 10 years at many different venues. Due to currently recording his 5th album he will

be only doing couple of shows in 2023. The new album is a collection of songs that all seem to have, in some way, a connection to his upbringing. Some are observations melding the past with the present and others fact with fiction. The new album includes Tony Floyd on drums (The Black Sorrows and many more), Paul Cartwright on bass (Brain Cadd, Glen Shorrock and many more) , Tim Neal on Hammond organ (Just about everyone!) and of course his long-time friend and playing partner Pete Batt on Piano. The album, yet to be named, will be released in October 2023. Warde will be performing solo at Astra Falls Creek and will no doubt bring his usual ‘heart on his sleeve’ approach telling stories though song performing a blend of his original music and versions of songs from his favourite songwriters. Don’t miss him at Astra this season. •

LOCAL HISTORY A Man of the Mountains

“I think that credit for much of the background work in the initial development of Falls Creek should be given to Martin Romuld for his early encouragement and appreciation of the beauty of the high country and of skiing!”

Born near Trondheim, Norway in 1905 Romuld began skiing at an early age. By the time he was six he was competing in various ski events but it was in ski jumping that he competed at the National level. Romuld studied civil engineering in Trondheim but with the Great Depression affecting Norway, he decided to emigrate, arriving in Australia in March 1928. While working in Melbourne in 1931 Martin returned to competitive skiing. For the next few years he was to dominate both State and National jump and langlauf events while great rival, Tom Mitchell, consistently beat him in the slalom. He was considered “one of the best ski jumpers the country has ever seen and one of the best all round skiers for his day.” (Australian Ski Year Book 1988).

In 1934 the editor of Victorian Ski Year Book wrote “We are fortunate, from several aspects, in having Mr Martin Romuld as a member. Firstly he brought honour to the Club during the past season by winning Australia’s most coveted ski title: that of National Champion, a title which he will be successful in retaining for many seasons. We were further indebted to him for his splendid work at Donna Buang for the jumping course. Mr Romuld was responsible for the plan and profile of the new jumping hill, together with the solution of its engineering problems.”

In June 1936 Martin joined the State Electricity Commission (SEC) as resident engineer based at a hydro-meteorological station (built in 1933 and later known as Wilkinson’s Lodge) erected just downhill from Wallace’s Hut. Martin’s off-sider, Joe Holston lived nearby in another hut which burned down in October 1940. (AGL workers report finding the ruins of a hut not far from the old SEC Hut after the 2003 bush fires). However Martin primarily skied alone, measuring flow rates and recording snow depths. At times additional workers would assist in the measurements and it was many of these SEC workers that Romuld

taught to ski - it appears he inspired many would be skiers. Interest in skiing was such that in 1940 discussions about forming a ski club were held in his cottage and later the same year SEC workers based in Bogong village formed the Bogong Ski Club.

Martin skied extensively over the High Plains on day trips extending from Mt Hotham to Mt Bogong. Andy Broad, in the November 1936 edition of Schuss magazine, wrote about joining him on a tour.

“we decided to call in on our old friend, Martin Romuld who is stationed at the SEC‘s cottage. Martin is very fit, enjoys every bit of life on the plains, and is very pleased with his job. On the jump which he has already built at the rear of his cottage he has covered 128 feet (39.014m). He has also a slalom course set down the Middle Creek Valley.

LOCAL HISTORY

During the afternoon he took us for a tour along Rocky Valley, towards Mt McKay. After running over it, Martin claims that Mt McKay possesses the finest downhill course he has ever seen in Australia, the descent being 3,000 feet to the snowline. This mountain also has ideal slalom courses, in addition to possessing a natural jumping hill. There are quite a number of adjacent slopes suitable for racing. When one hears an opinion such as that expressed by a skier of the calibre of Martin, it is wondered why our racing skiers claim that conditions on the plains are too flat for racing.”

In the five years he was based at the S.E.C cottage Martin was to have a great influence on the aspiring skiers of the day, who were no doubt impressed by his “steady upright stance” and the fact he skied “without any flamboyance or obvious effort.” Julian Newton Brown pays further testimony to his prowess.

“At one time Bill Kent Hughes (later Sir Wilfred) was touring the High Plains and met Martin at Wilkinson’s and asked him how long it would take him to get to Hotham and back. Martin said about six hours. Bill considered that impossible and bet him a dozen bottles of beer he couldn’t do it in the time. Martin set off immediately and returned with an item from Hotham as proof in 5 hours 45 minutes.”

This unofficial record still stood in 1970. (One can’t but wonder what time our current ski champions would take for a Wallace’s Hut - Hotham return - on classic waxing skis!)

In 1941 Martin joined the Royal Australian Air Force and after the war skied mainly at Mt Buller. He maintained his involvement in competitive skiing as an official. It was from participating in his first ski jump event at Falls Creek in 1958 that Julian Newton Brown became friends with Romuld.

High Plains Tour

Cross Country skiers get your racing skis on as the conditions are looking good for this year’s High Plains Tour on Saturday 8 July at Falls Creek.

The annual race run by the Howmans Gap Allstars ski club Inc starts at 11am in the Nordic Bowl. Those who took part last year were all impressed by the course so we’ll have an equally enjoyable course this year that will still challenge the best racers but also be suitable for those not so experienced in the world of ski racing. Anyone can give it a go and everyone is welcome. So if you’re new to racing or just keen to see how you’d go, this is the event for you.

Last year we had beautiful blue skis. We can’t guarantee you the same again this year, but we can guarantee you’ll have fun and you’ll find this the best value race on the calendar.

Saturday 8 July – 11am, Nordic Bowl, Falls Creek.

There are Freestyle (classic or skate technique) courses of 1km, 2.5km, 5km and 10km.

Entry costs are:

• 2.5, 5 & 10km course Adult - $35;

• 2.5, 5 & 10km course Junior (under 18 - Age as at 31 December 2023) - $25;

• 1 km course all participants - $10;

Entries this year are again via online by going to https://skiandpedal.au/hga_races/. If you haven’t had a chance to enter early, come down to the Falls Creek Windy Corner Day Shelter before 10 on Saturday and an online entry should be able to be done there, but the entry fees may be greater for late entry.

Note that you must go through to the payment stage of the entry process and make a payment in order to successfully submit your entry.

Race bibs are to be collected in Windy Corner between 9am and 10am.

Age Group Awards will be given, specific to each race distance. There will be wrapped Cadbury chocolates, drinks and random spot prizes for finishers.

Marco is a new kid on the block at Windy Corner who’s positive attitude and sunny disposition makes a perfect match beginners and small groups of skiers looking to learn or improve their skills on the snow. Our Bali Trip

Have you ever googled Bali? Do it and you will be swamped with sites touting the Indonesian Island as a tropical paradise famous for its breathtaking shoreline, surf, jungle rainforests, volcanic and mountainous terrain, mouth exploding food, temples, yoga, and intoxicating culture. I was very fortunate to visit the island recently and Bali delivered in every advertised way. I was not disappointed. However, this is not why I was visiting. You see, in amongst the delicious food, amazing sunsets, whimsy dresses, cocktails and jeweled havianas, lies an Island riddled with desperation, malnutrition & poverty.

Lee Docherty, owner of Gather & Harvest, my friend and boss, lived in Bali for two years. Lee volunteered much of her spare time assisting with ‘The Bali Street Mum’s Project’ where women, typically living in slums, and resigned to tip picking or begging to survive, are given the opportunity to learn skills that encourage self-worth and financial stability. Amongst other things, these skills include glass cutting. A process where empty glass bottles are collected from restaurants, cafes and rubbish dumps and cut to make a smooth, cup like, drinking vessel. This ignited a fire in Lee to help make a change. Upon

returning home, Lee established Gather & Harvest. A lifestyle retail boutique and studio located in Mount Beauty that makes and sells its own range of products, as well as stocking a beautifully curated range of other brands. Lee’s desire to make a difference led her to re-invent the cut glass bottles into beautiful, sustainable, and life changing candles. They’re the product we are most proud of.

These candles led me to Bali. (I won’t lie, so was the lure of cheap Bintang merch.) I have lost count how many times I have told the story of our candle’s origin to our valued customers. Lee was keen for me to see the project first hand and meet the very women whose lives we are changing. Upon arrival, the Project’s compound was bustling with calm activity. Mum’s were busy cooking, beading, glass cutting and sanding while their children were playing or being educated. In Indonesia, if a child cannot read or write by eight years of age they cannot attend a Government school. The Bali Street Mum’s Project is helping break the cycle. Education equals employment. The Mum’s also welcomed us into their homes

A side of Bali not seen in the brochures. Slums etched in poverty and filth. But the women enjoyed showing us around and posed with their children for photos. It was quite the novelty for the neighbours seeing Western tourists in their hood.

There was laughter when we got a little lost in translation and I was led to another shanty house to see clothes in a wardrobe instead of the outdoor concrete trough laundry. Despite the conditions, it’s their home and without the Project, these women could not afford the rent and have no money for food. It was a humbling experience I will never forget. Giving hope to the hopeless. Every time I open my mouth in the shower, I remember how lucky I am. It’s a luxury. As is a suitcase laden with Bintang merch!

It’s my honour to promote and sell this unique collaboration. The hard work of the underprivileged women of Bali and the creativity of Lee. •

Celebrating 22 Years

Saturday, 1 July may have marked the beginning of a new financial year, yet for one local business it heralded a much more exciting milestone.

MISSING BOOK

A hard-bound copy of Dr Ruth Lawrence’s Thesis titled ‘The Interaction between Land Use, the Environment and the Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985’ was given to this community in the care of the late Bill Sutton. It has been loaned out – and not returned. This is a vital piece of the history of this area and it would be fabulous to have it returned. The International Poma or ‘the inter’ as it is known rises almost 1000 vertical feet or 300 metres. It runs at 4.3 metres per second making it a very fast lift. Experienced skiers are the main users and because of its speed

the stick must be grasped on the run. A small slope to slide down gives a little speed for a skier to grab the pole while moving.

If you move off before the operator holds the stick out for you and you have to stop in order to grab it you accelerate from a stand-still to 4.3 metres per second very quickly. Small persons are easily jerked off their feet. Ski poles held point forward are a danger to the operator’s eyes and this is often done by the inexperienced. •
