Similar to indoor climbing, most outdoor climbers will require a belay device and climbing harness. A nut tool may also be needed.

Unlike indoor climbing walls, most outdoor crags will not have coloured holds identifying the best route, so a guidebook is essential to find the right course.

Clothing needs to be weather-proof and warm enough to stay comfortable on the trek to and from the climb site.

Take water, a thermos of something hot and some lunch or snacks to be able to spend more of the day climbing.
