EDITOR’S NOTE Plant-based Beauties Three years ago I decided to embark on a meat-free journey, and I never looked back. Which is why Im so happy to feature inspirational plant-based beauties in this months issue. Our cover girl and Miss Earth South Africa 2017, Mireesha Narsai and Pro Vegan Athlete and sports professional Jody Calitz are both proudly plant-based and through their respective social channels make plant-based eating more accessible to everyone! I know both Mireesha and Jody through working on the Meat Free Monday South Africa Campaign, and Im so happy to be able to share more about them in the EARTH issue of Yoga Journal.

INSTAGRAM: @JODYC_MYVEGANLIFE WWW.JODYCALITZ.COM

When I started planning the Earth Issue, it was a total no-brainer that Mireesha should be our cover girl and feature interview. Mireesha shares so many great tips on eating plant-based while traveling, and living a greener lifestyle in her feature interview on page 8. Jody Calitz, who I discovered on social media while working on MFMSA, is one of a growing number of Vegan Pro Fitness Athletes proving that being vegan doesn’t mean that you have to be weak or limited in what you can eat. As a sports professional for more than 20 years, she has expertly designed plant-based eating programs that are available on her website www.jodycalitz.com.

Natural & Non-toxic Local Skincare BY LARISSA GOVENDER The epidermis is the body’s largest organ. On a daily basis, our skin is exposed to air pollution, sun damage and environmental toxins. In winter, as we turn on the heat indoors, the skin starts to dry out. The colder season brings with it dryness to the skin, especially the face, hands and feet. The skin absorbs 60% of what we put on it and there is no shortage of products on the market today that promise to clean, hydrate and repair the damage. Most of these products however, are composed of synthetic ingredients that might do more harm than good. Local skin care brand SKOON. offers an exciting, bold and blissfully natural range of skincare products that is absolutely free of any toxins. SKOON. provides you with the health-giving properties your skin deserves by combining the best of nature with science. You are offered an uncomplicated collection of exquisitely fragranced, natural products that allow you to blend your own mixes, based on your skin’s daily needs. In the past, you may have sacrificed skin care and anti-aging objectives for “green-washing*” products. Now there is no need to. SKOON products are formulated with natural, organic, naturally derived and natural identical ingredients, sourced with huge effort from all over the world. All of their products are NOT TESTED ON ANIMALS, but on individuals who are ecoconscious, modern and concerned about the environment. As an eco-conscious individual and someone with dry, eczema-prone skin, I gave the SKOON. Dry/ Dehydrated Minipot kit, The Basic 4 Dry Skin, a try. *Green washing is when a company promotes green-based environmental images but actually operates in a way that is damaging to the environment. 6 of 32

BEAUTIFUEL (Double thick cream)

GEL-TO-MILK (Cleanser and make-up remover)

This rich, double thick cream is made with Organic Rooibos, Honeybush and Marula oil. Lavish your skin with a dollop of double thick, creamy BEAUTIFUEL twice daily or as needed. The smells from this cream were heavenly and my skin was made to feel like velvet. Enrich your cream with 1-2 drops of SKOON concentrates or lighten the intensity with a water based serum.

This cleanser is made with 98% natural and 2% naturally derived ingredients. This fragrance free, creamy cleanser formulated with gel-to-milk technology gently cleanses and conditions while swiftly removing all traces of face and eye make-up, including mascara. Morning and evening, lightly splash your face with lukewarm water and massage a small amount of cleanser into damp skin, taking care around the delicate eye area. Wipe away excess cleanser using a cloth soaked in lukewarm water. My skin was left feeling clean, moisturized and supple as apposed to tight and dry (which it often does feel like). When water is added the creamy gel changes into an oil-rich – but very light – cleansing milk that simultaneously cleanses and conditions your skin.

ROSEHIP C+ (Concentrate)

RUBY MARINE (Overnight hydrating mask) Wake up your skin while you sleep with RUBY MARINE, an overnight moisture boost with Wildflower Honey and Marula Oil. Smooth a generous layer of this overnight hydrating mask on clean or moisturized skin, taking care around the delicate eye area. Leave on overnight. This hydrating mask soothes and hydrates, plumps and softens your skin while you sleep. This product is definitely one I enjoyed including in my winter skincare routine.

Use concentrated drops of Organic Rosehip for rich replenishment of oildry skin. Clinical trials have found Rosehip Oil to be extremely beneficial in tissue regeneration for conditions such as burns, facial wrinkles and the treatment of scars. This potent skin booster also contains bio-available Vitamin C which has anti-aging properties. With SKOON. anything goes. Mix your favorite serum and concentrates together, or simply apply directly on your skin. You can add 1-2 drops of ROSEHIP C+ to your cream (I opted for this). Alternatively, use directly on sun damaged skin or to plump fine, crinkly lines. You can even customize your own blend by adding a drop or two to your favourite moisturizer.

SKOON strives to be as eco-friendly as possible. They are a proud member of Beauty Without Cruelty. Products suitable for vegans are marked with their Vegan friendly logo and their plastic containers are free from BPA. SKOON. does all of its own research and development, and produces all of its products from start to finish in one location. Their own factory in Cape Town ensures high quality every step of the way. With SKOON you get powerfully effective, natural takes on cutting-edge trends in skincare. The next time your old product runs out, use this as an opportunity to substitute with a clean alternative. Remember the importance of giving the ingredients listed in your product a second look and don’t be fooled by “green-washing” claims. In conjunction with a great skincare routine, drink plenty of water to keep your skin well hydrated this chilly season. MISS EARTH SOUTH AFRICA

MIREESHA NARSAI

she’s fire! BY LARISSA GOVENDER

I recently sat down with Miss Earth South Africa (Fire), Mireesha Narsai, in her sunny hometown of Durban, to chat about all things Earth and Yoga. By formal qualification, Mireesha is a civil engineer. More than this, she is the Child-Welfare Durban and District Ambassador, a plant-based food blogger, and a fitness and yoga enthusiast. Mireesha truly embodies Mahatma Gandhi’s words, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” I say this because, when her Matcha-energy-smoothie arrived at our table, she was not impressed by the plastic straw in it. She had specifically requested no straw! Beauty and brains! But more than that, a humanitarian! Mireesha is passionate about leaving the world a better place, one straw at a time. Read on for my Q&A with the passionate earth-child, Mireesha Narsai.

Q&A

YOU HAVE BEEN VEGETARIAN ALL YOUR LIFE. I HAVE READ THAT YOU HAVE AN APPRECIATION OF ANIMALS. HOW HAS EATING A PLANT-BASED DIET BEEN OF BENEFIT? Being raised in a vegetarian household, I have never had the craving for meat. I cannot compare my diet to that of a meat-inclusive one. My boyfriend is a meateater and I don’t mind. I feel that a plant-based diet is not for everyone, but my conscience is at ease, which is the biggest driving factor behind my diet. I am left feeling light after I eat, unless the meal includes bread. Eating out has become better than it was in the past. Granted, at times you may be forced to choose between a salad or pasta on the menu, there are places such as the Woolworths Harvest Table that have healthy, tasty and wholesome plant-based foods.

I find myself being more challenged and becoming a better cook because of my plant-based diet.

FROM YOUR INSTAGRAM, I CAN TELL THAT YOU ARE WIDELY-TRAVELLED. YOU RECENTLY RETURNED FROM A TRIP TO EUROPE. IS IT EASY TO ADOPT A PLANT-BASED DIET AND SUSTAINABLE LIVING IN OTHER COUNTRIES? IS THERE ANYTHING SOUTH AFRICANS CAN LEARN FROM THOSE ABROAD? Two years ago I visited Germany, which is leading the way, not just in terms of plant-based diets, but in areas such as recycling and renewable energy. People in Europe are more conscious of the effects of their diets on their bodies and the planet. We can learn a lot by

“I make it my responsibility to care and act. Once I know that something is amiss, I cannot ignore it. I just have to spread the message around me, in order to communicate what needs to be done.”

adopting what the developed world does. It could even be a few years down the line, but the sooner the better. South African’s don’t have to cut out meat completely from their diets – that is personal choice. But they should definitely consider moving towards more plant-based diets, because it really does have a positive effect on the environment. It’s not just one person’s responsibility. All of us who make up humanity, have to have each other’s back.

YOU DO NOT FIT THE STEREOTYPE OF BEAUTYPAGEANT CONTESTANTS. PART OF BEING MISS EARTH IS TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENT AS MISS EARTH? After a gala event in Johannesburg at which Miss Earth Water, Wind and Fire had been announced, we were taken to a school where kids put on a performance. There was a little girl from Grade 6/ 7 who came up to me and said, “I love you Miss Fire; you are my role model. I want to be just like you.” Now here I am, my parent’s daughter, a regular human being and this other human being looks at me and says that something I have done has had an impact on her. Somewhere, someone must have had that impact on me, for me to go this way and I’m glad that I can continue the cycle and give back. And if I had that impact on only one person, that is fine. But the more people I impact on, the better. If more people are interested in saving the planet, then we will save it!

THERE IS NO DENYING YOUR FIT PHYSIQUE. TELL ME MORE ABOUT YOUR YOGA JOURNEY. I’ve been doing yoga since before I can remember. From a very young age I was flexible and my grandmother taught me all of the yoga poses. She had my feet over my head, touching my forehead before I even knew what yoga was. My family is very spiritual and we have a lot of books lying around. When I was about

10 of 32

10, I found a book called Yoga and the Bible. I paged through the book and thought to myself, “Oh I can do that… hmmm so this is yoga.” From high school, through to my first few years at university, I stopped and didn’t really pursue yoga. I got back into it in 2014. I heard about Tree Natural Concept in Durban, a studio that offered hot yoga. I had previously done hot yoga when I lived in Cape Town. Hot yoga was such a rush! I remember the first time I did it, I felt so proud of myself, so proud of my body. So back in Durban, I got on to the hot yoga train. But I crashed and burnt! I would find myself sitting in Child’s Pose (my favorite pose) for most of it, just getting my breath back. It was Anastasia Dellis who suggested I try a normal class. I do yoga at my gym and when I don’t feel like gymming (which is a lot of the time) I do yoga at home. I follow a yoga channel, Yoga with Adriene, I really love her, because most of the time it’s about personal practice. Yoga for me is about centering myself, pulling my mind back to the present moment, because my mind tends to go in a thousand different directions. Focus, and hold your pose! I like to focus on Vinyasa and sometimes Ashtanga, depending on what programs I research and what I feel like doing. I pay special attention to opening the hips, stretching, mobility, flexibility and core strength. I am currently recovering from a back injury so focusing on core strength is a perk I get from yoga. That feeling of being proud of your body after doing yoga has never gone away. I can be in the worst mood, but I wake up every morning and I do some form of yoga. I backbend, and after that second Sun Salutation, I am so glad I got my mat and did something! It’s such a focused way to start your day, being so mindful of your body. Sometimes it’s tough and you can’t be as flexible as you wish. Sometimes your Tree Pose is just your foot on your calf and that’s alright! There were times in a class when everyone else was in Warrior Pose 3, not flinching, and there I was battling! I do know that we shouldn’t measure ourselves against others. This is why I practice by myself so there is nobody to distract me. I will get back into classes when I know it’s just about me and my journey, but for now I maintain a personal practice.

EARTH IS REFERRED TO AS “MOTHER EARTH” OR “MOTHER NATURE”. DO YOU FEEL A LINK BETWEEN BEING FEMALE AND LOOKING AFTER THE EARTH THROUGH SUSTAINABLE LIVING? Yes, but it doesn’t just stop at sustainability. Being a woman means I have to be there for all other woman. “Sisters I have your back.” This is an extension of taking care of the planet, because the planet has inhabitants. I think the mothering nature is very strong in me. I make it my responsibility to care and act. Once I know that something is amiss, I cannot ignore it. I just have to spread the message around me, in order to communicate what needs to be done. There is the trap of being a certain way because it’s trendy, but for me it’s a lifestyle. I mother my 2 dogs, Zara and Jibran (like Khalil Gibran) and I look after my dragon-fruit seedlings. I am a very “mothering” person. I like taking care of people and things, but mostly taking care of the planet. My conscience will bug me if I walk past a carelessly discarded bottle. I pick it up, because I know the consequences… These things find their way into the ocean and into a turtle’s stomach for example. I can’t have that on my conscience. These poor innocent creatures die because they’re hungry.

Mireesha has plans to complete her masters, implement recycling programs for Child Welfare and further a vegan business venture, Out to Lunch, which she is involved in. How will she accomplish all of this, you may ask? Well, by starting each day with her Surya Namaskar/ Sun Salutations of course. After sitting down to chat with Mireesha there is no doubt that the future has great things in store for this, “determined to change the world” young lady. I cannot help but feel inspired to omit that plastic straw the next time I order a beverage. For delicious plant-based recipes, and more follow Mireesha on Instagram @mireesha, or visit her blog enthrawled.wordpress.com

TOP WAYS

TO REDUCE YOUR

WASTE BY ZISSY LEWIN

According to Redisa (Recycling and Economic Development Initiative South Africa), South Africa produces 108 million tons of waste per year. 90 per cent of that waste ends up in landfills whilst a tiny 10 per cent of waste is currently recycled. They estimate that if we continue our current rate of consumption and production, by 2050 we will need three planets to sustain our current way of living. Starting your own zero waste journey doesn’t have to be a complete lifestyle shift, there are simple ways to start reducing the amount of waste you produce.

We are lucky to have safe drinking water, which means bottled water is an unnecessary purchase. Instead of buying a bottle of water, invest in a cute water bottle.

1

REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF THINGS YOU BUY The easiest way to reduce your waste is to buy less and buy more mindfully. We live in a consumerism society which encourages more. Before making a purchase, consider if it’s something you really want or actually need. The bonus of this is you’ll end up saving more money which you can use towards saving or experiences which are longer lasting and do more for your happiness than stuff.

2 RECYCLE WHAT YOU CAN Find out about your neighbourhood recycling plans and get involved. This can be as simple as filling up a green Ronnie Rabbit bag of paper waste and leaving it outside your house on collection day. Glasses and tins can also be recycled, so find your local depot and make a habit of visiting them monthly to drop of your waste.

3

AVOID USING DISPOSABLES Plastic cutlery, plates and cups that are thrown out after one use, contribute to a large amount of waste. Make using them the exception, not the rule. Plus, mealtime feels a lot more special when it served on proper plates.

4

SWITCH TO REUSABLE SHOPPING BAGS South African supermarkets started charging for plastic bags years ago in an effort to reduce plastic waste. But how many times have you gone into a shop and not flinched when saying yes to the “would you like a bag with that”? Rather invest in some reusable shoppers you can keep in your car and take out every time you go shopping. Most supermarkets sell reusable bags, but you can also get cute canvas shopping bags from Wellness Warehouse (main picture) from R50.

5

SWITCH TO REUSABLE WATER BOTTLES We are lucky to have safe drinking water, which means bottled water is an unnecessary purchase. Instead of buying a bottle of water, invest in a cute water bottle – Consol makes great glass ones, which are affordable. If you want “purified water” set your kitchen taps up with a water filter system or purchase Kuru-Bo activated Charcoal sticks (R235 for a 3 months’ supply) which purify water.

ENTHRAWLED A raw food diet is a plant-based diet that consists mainly of uncooked and unprocessed fruits, vegetables, and grains. The benefits of eating raw include improved skin, weight loss, and prevention of most major diseases due to an increased intake of vitamins and minerals. Those who follow this diet believe that cooking food destroys the valuable nutrients, and therefore eating organic raw foods ensures a higher intake of of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Some people choose to eat an entirely raw food diet, others follow the popular “Raw Till Four” diet, and some just try to incorporate raw foods into their diet where they can. For raw food recipes and inspiration, look no further than this months cover girl and Miss Earth South Africa 2017, Mireesha Narsai, who shares her best plant-based recipes, healthy living and exercise tips, and more on her blog, Enthrawled.

YOGAJOURNALREVIEWS

“I loved that each pose had a characteristic associated with it”

THE MAGIC OF KIDS YOGA “The Magic Mat Yoga book is a great tool to use for children’s yoga – in the class as well as at home with your own children. We did the book first and watched the DVD after, which my daughter of 5 enjoyed as there are poses on the DVD which are not in the book. She loved the “secret message” at the end, and said this was her favourite part about the book. She also loved being inside the rainbowcoloured bubble in savasana. Her favourite pose was the peacock – I think seeing the pose on the front cover increases the interest and anticipation of it. From a teacher’s point of view – I loved that each pose had a characteristic associated with it – this brings in the deeper meaning of yoga into the practice which is so important for kids to learn at a young age. We both loved the pictures – it helps children with the visualisation of what they are embodying. It is definitely something we love to read, watch and practice over and over.” – Sarah Thomson, Children’s Yoga Teacher at Yogi Bali in Bedfordview, 064 755 8561.

6 BEST APPS FOR

TRAVELLING BY PETE REYNOLDS, NEVERSETTLE.CO.ZA

24 of 32

Personally, I do not believe that technology is a negative thing in and of itself. It really depends on how you use it. Not that you should rely too heavily on things like cellphones, apps, or computers (you should still be able to function if your battery dies), but often they made travel easier and more enjoyable for us.

INSTAGRAM

HAPPYCOW

Free Heard of this one? Haha. This one may seem a bit weird to put in here, but honestly, Instagram has been incredibly useful for us when traveling. We’ve made friends in Seattle, New York, Canada, Germany, Australia and all over the world, as well as organised accommodation through it. You can use tags to see what a place is like, how vegan friendly it is (tip: search #(cityname)vegan), or even to find people who live there and connect with them. Instagram might have actually been the most useful app for us out of this whole list.

$3.99 (website is free to use though) HappyCow is a community-run app that lists vegan, vegan friendly, vegetarian and veg friendly places all over the world. I used to use the website most of the time, but found that the app is just more convenient. We have used it all over the world, and even managed to find a small vegan friendly Rastafarian restaurant called Estrella Negra in the Atacama desert, Chile. You can find things nearby, or you can plan your trips and save places. If you are vegan or vegetarian, I cannot recommend this app highly enough.

FLAPP Free This is TravelStart’s app. Honestly, because TravelStart lists the total flight cost including all the taxes, VAT and hidden fees, I’ve found them to be the most affordable, most of the time. The app is really easy to use. Obviously, we live in South Africa, and it’s cool for here, but I’m not sure how it’ll be for people outside of the country.

COUCHSURFING Free Couchsurfing is amazing. Basically, you find hosts in locations you want to go, and ask if you can stay with them. We Couchsurfed in Portland, Oregon, USA and Santiago, Chile and both were amazing experiences that left us with incredible memories and life-long friends. The community is really active and really helpful. You can also use filters when looking for hosts e.g. ‘vegan’.

DUOLINGO Free Duolingo teaches you languages in kind of a game style, where you can build up points, get bonus features etc. It’s pretty fun and easy to use. The best is when you get super weird sentences e.g. “The crab does not eat bread” (from when I was trying to learn Spanish). I am currently 1% fluent in German! Apparently Zulu is coming soon, which we’re pretty keen for.

GOOGLE TRANSLATE Free Google Translate works the same way as the site, just in a nicer, more convenient format. I’ve whipped it out more than once in frustrating situations when me and someone else just weren’t understanding each other e.g. when trying to order something without dairy, egg, or oyster sauce in South America.
