EDITOR’S NOTE A Journey from concept to reality Issue 1 of The Yoga Journal has been a product of months of work, and I hope you are as excited as I am to see it materialise. As a yoga enthusiast who has been doing yoga for more than seven years, I have loved seeing the yoga community in South Africa grow. It was with this in mind that I had the idea to create a platform for all things yoga in South Africa. I wanted to bring together and showcase the exciting yoga community in one beautiful space, online and in print.

“I wanted to bring together and showcase the exciting yoga community in one beautiful space” First, The Yoga Journal website was born, and then The Yoga Journal magazine directory. The response from the yoga community so far has been overwhelming, and I couldn’t have done it without the support of everyone I have shared my idea with so far. The Yoga Journal is for everyone, you don't need to already be a yogi; it’s for the beginner who wants to start out with yoga and would like to find everything they need in one place, a yoga mat, a yoga studio, or a private instructor. It’s for the experienced yogi, who's looking to stay up to date on the latest events and workshops. And it’s for the travelling yogi, who likes to try new yoga events and classes in a new city! Peace and Joy

Nicole

BENEFITS OF AERIAL YOGA and the best aerial yoga studios in Johannesburg

By Nicole Jowett What is Aerial Yoga? Think TRX-suspension training meets yoga. A combination of yoga, pilates, and dance, all while suspended in a hammock. Aerial yoga is the zero-impact, fun, and acrobatic workout that anyone can do. The benefits are endless, from improving joint health, flexibility and core strength, to decompressing the spine and alleviating back pain. Poses are performed while suspended or holding onto the hammock. A full-body workout is achieved with a variety of poses including backbends, hip openers, inversions, and floor poses that will ignite your core. Having the safety of the hammock provides a safe place to experiment with inversions you may normally not be able to do in a traditional yoga class. Aerial yoga is even better for people with injuries, being suspended in the hammock takes the pressure off of joints affected by injury.

Alleviate back pain, improve core strength, flexibility, and joint health. Who can benefit from Aerial Yoga? - Anyone with knee, shoulder, or other injuries. - Those wanting to experiment with inversions. - People who work at a desk for long hours and suffer from back pain. - Pregnant women wanting to maintain core strength while getting a full body workout. (Please avoid inversions during pregnancy)

YOGA + PSYCHOLOGY By Nicole Jowett Television content producer and certified Demartini Method facilitator, Eliza Roza, shares how yoga and Psychology helped her overcome emotional challenges and shaped her new direction in life.

“I'm creating online YogaPlus videos for people to download: a combination of yoga postures and psychology education, which is what YogaPlus is all about! Today Eliza Roza is a successful yoga instructor, holds a Bachelors Degree in Psychology, and is the owner of YogaPlus, carving out her place as a yoga entrepreneur in South Africa. But a few years ago she was beginning a new journey in her career and life when she discovered the powerful combination of yoga and psychology. While studying her Psychology degree part-time, a string of loses in her life resulted in a particularly challenging year for her, during this time she took up Hot Yoga and quickly discovered the mental and physical benefits of yoga. After attending her first Bikram class she knew she had to teach Hot Yoga. She became a qualified Bikram Yoga instructor under the teaching of Sally Flanaganwww.theyogajournal.co.za

MOVE. FEEL. TRANSFORM Gutjhar, owner of Yoga Experience Jozi, who pioneered Bikram yoga in South Africa, all while working in a high-pressure job and completing her degree. While travelling to the rest of Africa for her work in Television, Eliza noticed that everyone and anyone no matter what their economic or social background may be, is open to trying yoga which inspired her to develop her business YogaPlus into a platform to make yoga accessible to everyone in South Africa. YogaPlus combines the physical benefits of yoga and the mental wellbeing benefits of psychology, and aims to develop yoga in South Africa with projects such as a beautiful coffee table book showcasing yoga

poses in the most beautiful locations in South Africa, and upliftment projects in communities like Hillbrow. It is through these avenues that Eliza hopes to bring yoga and its benefits to everyone in South Africa. We chatted to Eliza about her favourite yoga poses, what’s next in her personal yoga journey, and the importance of breathing techniques for stress management.

“Using breathing techniques while sitting in traffic can positively affect your day”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE YOGA POSE THAT YOU CANNOT GO WITHOUT IN YOUR PRACTICE? “I have to have breathing exercises in each of my practices. If I could teach one person to breathe better I would be happy,” said Eliza. Breathing exercises are an essential tool for stress management, “Using breathing techniques while sitting in traffic can positively affect your day,” comments Eliza. In addition to that a good back bend like Camel pose followed by Rabbit pose to decompress the spine and get the blood flowing to the vertebrae is one of her favourites. WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING YOGA POSE FOR YOU? “Awkward pose just gets me every time, I never know how I'll hold the posture for 30 seconds, but somehow I always manage to. A good teacher helps; you can find great teachers at Yoga Experience Jozi, The Yoga Republic and Zen Hot Yoga World,” said Eliza.

“If I could teach one person to breathe better I would be happy” WHATS NEXT FOR YOUR YOGA JOURNEY? “My next pursuit is a course in Vinyasa Flow, because I'd love to start putting my own creative yoga sequences together. As you know, Bikram is a set sequence, which is great as a foundation. I'm creating online YogaPlus videos for people to download: a combination of yoga postures and psychology education, which is what YogaPlus is all about!” comments Eliza. For bookings, class schedule, and enquiries contact Eliza Roza at eliza@yogaplus.co.za and visit the YogaPlus website yogaplus.co.za.

3 HEALTHY EATING HABITS TO START TODAY By Tracey Clayton Every day we read hundreds of different articles that propose healthy nutrition and miracle diets that are going to boost your immunity, melt those pounds and basically make you superhuman. Some of them advise relying solely on proteins, while others claim that a carb packed diet gives the optimal results. So how do you choose the best diet in a sea of options? Let’s put it this way: the recipe for a perfect diet consists of a lot of different factors. It is not only what you eat, but also how and when you eat it. The best way to create a suitable diet for your body is to follow a few basic guidelines:

Make It Colourful Obviously, the most important part of creating a healthy diet plan is carefully choosing the foods you are eating. While there are many theories which claim that healthy dieting requires cutting out sugars, fats or carbs, the truth is that our body needs all of these compounds to function properly. Of course, the secret lies in creating a perfect platter consisting of foods that are going to nourish your body with all the essential nutrients. This means that your diet should contain colourful fruits and vegetables,

fibre-rich foods and proteins, but also healthy carbs and good fats and sugars. All of these nutrients and necessary minerals and vitamins can be found in natural foods, while processed foods only contain compounds that harm our b o d i e s w i t h p r e s e r v a t i v e s a n d a r t i fi c i a l ingredients. Balance Is Key Louis C.K. said in one of his comedy sketches: “The meal is not over when I’m full, the meal is over when I hate myself.” Jokes aside, how many of us can relate to this? Eating moderately does not mean starving yourself, it only means eating as much as your body needs to feel full. Have you ever thought about why most Japanese people are so lean and healthy? Besides their specific types of foods and cooking techniques, Japanese have a tendency to eat smaller portions and to use chopsticks. This allows them to eat more slowly and in smaller quantities, which helps the body send satiation signals to the brain, informing it that it is full. Learning how to balance your eating habits can greatly help you maintaining healthy nutrition.

Organising your day so you would be able to eat smaller meals throughout the day, rather than eating one or two big meals can significantly help you in regulating your weight. Time Is of the Essence Lastly, if you wish to create an optimal diet and stick to it, it is crucial to make an eating schedule. If your main concern is regulating your weight, then the best solution is to eat a healthy breakfast that will give you an instant boost of energy to face the day. You should also avoid eating late at night, as your body digests food much slower during the period of rest. Organising your day so you would be able to eat smaller meals throughout the day, rather than eating one or two big meals can significantly help you in regulating your weight. If you have noticed that you started gaining or losing weight uncontrollably, perhaps it is a good idea to seek the help of a dietician or naturopath in order to get a proper insight in what might be the issue. There are a lot of important aspects of proper dieting, but your will to manage and control your nutrition has the most impact on the complete process. If you are willing to maintain a healthy diet it can greatly improve not only your weight, but your physical, emotional and mental health as well.

Learning how to balance your eating habits can greatly help you maintaining healthy nutrition. 13 of 24
