Dear Friends, 2013 marked the start of change for our Y. We unveiled a vibrant and diverse new look and messaging, kicking off the national brand revitalization for the entire YMCA movement. As we reintroduce our Y as a cause-driven movement, we make a new promise to you–our Y is committed to strengthening the foundations of our community. Three key areas of focus define what that new promise means to Dodge County–Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. Our daily thoughts and actions will be framed by our commitment to support these key areas of focus. Our new promise is helping redefine and reinvigorate the Y’s focus to maximize the impact we have on the lives of others and deliver positive change.

As you review this annual report, we hope you will see how our Y is strengthening our communities and making a difference each and every day.

We believe Dodge County can be so much more.

Because we believe everyone has the power to make their lives and community better, we open our doors to all - no matter who they are or where they come from. Everyday we take on the challenges that will shape our community’s future.

Together with our members, our volunteers, our staff, our friends and our partners throughout the community, we make Dodge County stronger by focusing on three priorities: youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Youth Development All kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, under the guidance of adults who care about them and believe in their potential. We see every interaction with young people as an opportunity for learning and development.

The YMCA of Dodge County has been our choice for childcare since the birth of our first child. Actually there really was no other option in my mind, as this facility offers not only quality, consistent care but many extras as well.

Our oldest can now participate in swimming lessons and other classes while at school. And when I say at school, it’s really just that. The Y staff offers more than just childcare to our children, they are also teaching them. I’m amazed at how smart our daughter is and that’s really a reflection on her teachers. She knew her colors, alphabet and numbers by three. Before she turned four she could already write her name and count to 25. That amazes me because as a full time working mom, I know that I’m not able to work with her as much as I’d like. The teachers at the Y genuinely care about the kids. I appreciate their commitment. As far as I’m concerned, they have the most important job there is and I cannot praise them enough.

A parent shared with me that their preschool child had fallen off a pier and into Beaver Dam Lake. The child was able to stay afloat and make their way to the pier to hang on until pulled to safety. After the initial scare, the parents shared their disbelief and gratitude that their child was able to “swim” because the only swim lessons this child had was the one week of free lessons in our YMCA Bea Bonner McKinstry Begin to Swim program. This family will forever connect our Y with a timely life saving skill for their child.

Healthy Living Health and well-being are all about balance. That’s why we help people and families build and maintain healthy habits for spirit, mind and body in their everyday lives.

By helping kids, adults, families and seniors from all backgrounds improve their health and well-being, we build a stronger Dodge County.

My first experience began in 1941 at the Division Street YMCA in Chicago. I was an active youth member and particiapted in the Y’s singing group and learned many things at the YMCA Summer Camp. Looking back at the many Y memories, I realized that although we had nothing, we did have the Y. I have been a member of the YMCA of Dodge County since February 2004. I enjoy propulsion walking and catching up with friends over a cup of coffee and a cookie. Coming to workout and visiting with my friends is what keeps me going.

I had a chance meeting not that long ago with a gentleman who just joined the Y. I was the person scheduled to give him an introduction to our Wellness Center. I noticed his walk was unsteady, and he needed a cane to help him balance. He shared with me that he has Parkinson’s Disease. I enjoyed getting to know him during his orientation and when I saw him at the Y I offered to help him on the different machines and teach him correct breathing techniques. Today, I see him several times a week at our Y as he confidently works out on his own…and now he leaves his cane at home.

Social Responsibility With our doors open to all, we work every day to connect people from all backgrounds across Dodge County and support those who need us most. We take on the most urgent needs in our community and inspire a spirit of service in return. Our members, volunteers, supporters and staff demonstrate the power of what we can achieve by giving back together.

The YMCA of Dodge County hosted a “Dinner’s On Us” event that was brought to us by United Healthcare and Feeding America. This program works to bring healthy food to families throughout the state of Wisconsin. Many of our Y staff volunteered their time and talents to help organize and distribute 235 bags of free groceries and 62 free health care screenings to Dodge County in that one evening.

“Our purpose is people - it is truely rewarding to be part of something so much bigger than a program or facility.

Tonight we empowered others to make positive food choices”.

The YMCA has served our city for many decades. There is no doubt that in our community, the YMCA has been and will continue to be extremely successful as a human service organization. They bring joy, fitness, rehabilitation and child care services to the many people they serve. They truly position the greater Beaver Dam area as a wonderful place to live, work, play and do business.

Active older adults

Active Older Adults (AOA) in the YMCA experience a strong sense of belonging and a network of friends who provide supportive communities for sustained health and well-being. Through fun, safe and engaging programs, activities and events, AOA members increase their self-confidence and sense of achievement while building relationships and celebrating the success and milestones of one another within their AOA community.

Older adults, individuals 55 years and above, are a significant and growing segment of our communities. All AOA benefit from engaging in YMCA activities that enhance connections, decrease a sense of isolation and improve overall well-being.

Actively Aging A program for seniors…no membership required! Join us at the Y for only $2 on Monday and Friday mornings, use the Wellness Center, the pools, the hot tub, participate in our member-free group classes and so much more...

Propulsion Walking Early mornings come to life in our Family Adventure Pool as our seniors take to the water for a variety of activities. Floating, walking and talking are just the start of the fun. Relax in the hot tub and end the day getting to know others over a free cup of coffee in our lobby.

Senior Personal Trainings We offer one-on-one training/consultation for seniors ranging from healthy individuals, to post-rehab clients, to active senior athletes, or for those who need a beginning to their fitness journey.

Senior Socials Join us monthly for Senior Social Activities; games to picnics, pot lucks to dining out, day trips to educational seminars and much more… Every late morning of the week, the coffee is hot (and free) and the company in the lobby cannot be beat.

Volunteering There is no other volunteer organization quite like the Y. Our seniors take an active role in volunteering, from stuffing eggs for our annual egg hunt, making cookies for our Swim with Santa event, baking foods for our fundraisers, to helping with special events such as blood drives, food drives, toy bank, Sports Night, Dinners on Us and so much more…
