RABBITING ON... for Rabbit Awareness Week

One of the inevitabilities of being a vet is that you will gain a few pets along the way. When an RSPCA animal collection officer brought in a little white rabbit with 2 broken front legs, it joined the Gardner household. Mother Nature had already done a reasonable job on the fractures, resulting in 1 useable leg and 1 wonky but stable one and the little rabbit quickly settled into her new home. What I hadn’t anticipated was the arrival of babies some 3 weeks later!

It soon became apparent that 1 rabbit had become 5 and more spacious living accommodation would be required.

Rabbits do enjoy company and we would always advise keeping 2 or 3 together. However introducing rabbits can be very difficult, they can be extremely aggressive and inflict severe injuries on each other when fighting. So ideally get 2 or 3 from the same litter and then have them all neutered soon

after 12 weeks of age, as even siblings of the same sex are likely to fight and a mixture of the 2 will result in a population explosion!

Don’t forget to budget for your new rabbit family. The more rabbits you have, the bigger the house and run that will be required and the more vets bills you will have, rabbits should be vaccinated annually and will need treating for parasites. Note I have said “house” not hutch, most hutches that are sold are totally inadequate to house a rabbit, being much too small. So if DIY is your thing, create your rabbit a palace and if not ask some-one else to build one for you! Our bunny family had their own garden shed. We used a piece of flexible land drain pipe to create a passage from the shed to an enclosed wire run and because the pipe was flexible we were able to move the run onto fresh grass around the shed. The rabbits were then able to come and go as they

wished, had free access to grass and to sunshine which is important for vitamin D production. Having got the house, then find some toys, logs to sit on, plant pots to carry around, fresh branches (apple, hawthorn, plum) to nibble on. A bored rabbit will be a grumpy rabbit and a grumpy rabbit will scratch and bite!

A natural diet is the healthiest diet and what does a wild rabbit eat? Grass, grass and more grass, plus hedgerow plants. They do not eat lettuce, broccoli, carrots and apples! Your rabbit might prefer these, just as children prefer chips and fizzy drinks. A couple of treats a day eg 1 slice of apple, 1 small piece of broccoli, is fine but mostly we should be feeding our rabbits grass or it’s dried form, hay. Then do the sniff test. This is especially important in the summer. One of the most distressing conditions we have to treat is the maggot infested rabbit. Flies are attracted to rabbits that have urine or faecally contaminated bottoms, if you can smell your rabbit’s bottom, so can the flies! The fly will lay eggs onto the rabbit’s fur, the eggs will hatch in 1-2 days and the tiny maggots immediately start eating through the skin and into the rabbits flesh. Caught early the maggots can be removed and the damage repaired, left a few days and euthanasia is often the only option. Please pick up your rabbit at least once a day and do a bottom check, a clean bottom is a healthy bottom.! If your rabbit is one of the many that often gets a bit mucky, ask your vet about topical treatments that can be used to kill any maggots as they hatch. As always, prevention is better than cure!

OLYMPIC SHOW SUCCESS

Wow what a weekend, the LoveBallet Dance Company pupils had a very busy weekend over 14th & 15th July performing in “Dream Light” the Olympic Themed Show and raising £2825.00 for Charity.

The show was inspired by the Olympics and is about individual and collective dreams. It’s about the journey of believing in yourself and successfully reaching & achieving your dreams. The show depict the journey of a group of individuals searching for the Olympic torch as their world has been plunged into darkness…through the inspiration of the different values of the dances from around the world, these individuals come to realise that the torch they seek is the light they receive from people following and realising their dreams.

There was Acting, Ballet, Tap, Modern, Gymnastics, Street Dance, Adult Tap and Contemporary in the show which kept the pupils very busy. They were super stars right from the start to the finish and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Principal Lorraine Day said “they have been asking me if they can do it every weekend they loved it so much, it’s just such a great fantastic opportunity for them to take part in a show of this scale. We had all ages from little ones of 3 years up to Adult Tappers, all enjoying themselves, performing on stage and raising a phenomenal amount for charity, I’m just so proud of them all.”

The show was entirely for charity and we chose to support 2 Charities - Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice in Coventry. This is a local hospice that provides respite, palliative and end of life care to families and their children aged 0-5 who have life limiting or life threatening conditions & Clic Sargent, this is charity that helps children and young people who have cancer. A grand total of £2825.00 was raised which is a fantastic amount in such difficult times.

Since then our feet have hardly touched the floor with the Summer School on Wednesday 25th & Thursday 26th July, this gives pupils and non pupils the chance to take part in various dance genres and try out new exciting things over 2 days of jam packed dance fun. We all have such a lovely time on the Summer and Easter Schools and they love the creativity involved.

Now its time to work towards examinations and progress to the next grade in our dance subjects, the pupils will have exams in the Autumn so it’s a busy and exciting time ahead.

New rules for sickness/incapacity benefit has been introduced which mean you will now have a Work Capability Assessment and possibly a Medical Assessment completed by an approved healthcare professional if you have been ill for more than 28 weeks. If you think it can’t happen to me, Government statistics show that as at end of February 2011 over 2.58 million people were claiming either the new Employment and Support Allowance or Incapacity Benefit! You may also be surprised to know that Jobseekers allowance will also reduce if you have savings of over £6,000.

Insurance in the event of accident, illness or unemployment has always been very important but none more so than today. There are different types of schemes available and this is where you benefit from using an Independent Financial Adviser. Not only do they research the market they explain the jargon and small print for you. An accident, sickness and unemployment policy usually has a maximum benefit period of 24 months and you have to be ill or claiming jobseekers allowance for more than 30 days, this is known as the Deferred Period. The benefit can then be backdated to day 1 which means you in effect get paid for the month you have been ill or unemployed. To reduce costs you can select an excess period of say 30 days which means you only receive the monthly benefit or part thereof for the days ill or unemployed over 30 days. Unemployment cover usually has

an initial period at the start of your policy of 90 or 120 days whereby if you are made redundant during this period you can not claim. It is also very important to remember that accepting voluntary redundancy means you can not then claim for becoming unemployed. The amount of benefit chosen is usually your monthly mortgage payment and associated household bills. The Insurance Company will usually exclude any medical conditions which you have been treated for within the previous 12 months before you start the policy and the premium may increase over the years.

Another type of income protection insurance is known as Permanent Health Insurance. The main differences being the benefit period is usually to your retirement age or to the end of your mortgage term, the Insurance Company cannot cancel your policy even if you are likely to make multiple claims due to an ongoing illness and the premium can be guaranteed not to increase throughout the term. The Insurance Company will calculate the premium based on your age, sex, occupation, smoking habits and health.
