Celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's remarkable 70 year reign

• Queen Elizabeth II is the fortieth monarch since William the Conqueror obtained the crown of England and the longest reigning monarch in history, earning this distinction in 2015, when she surpassed Queen Victoria’s 63 years, seven months and two days on the throne.

• Queen Elizabeth II was born at 2.40am on 21 April 1926, to parents the Duke and Duchess of York, who later became King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother).

• As Queen, she has been served by 14 UK Prime Ministers including Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher and more recently, Boris Johnson.

• Her Majesty’s favourite dogs are corgis. She even invented a new breed of dog when her corgi mated with a dachshund belonging to her sister, Princess Margaret, creating the “dorgi”.

• The Queen speaks fluent French and often uses the language for Audiences and State Visits. Her Majesty does not require an interpreter.

• The Queen has received over 3.25 million items of correspondence during her reign.

• Over the course of the reign, around 1.1 million people have attended Garden Parties at Buckingham Palace or the Palace of Holyrood House (The Queen ended Presentation Parties

in 1958).

• Tony Blair is the first Prime Minister to have been born during The Queen’s reign. He was born in early May 1953 - a month before the Coronation.

• She’s the only person in the UK allowed to drive without a licence. She also never needs a passport when traveling around the world.

• Along with Winston Churchill’s daughter, she joined the women’s branch of the British army during WWII.The Queen got behind the wheel of a truck - it’s how she learned to drive.

• She has many hobbies, including horse riding, pigeon racing, and football – she’s an Arsenal supporter!

• On a low-key trip to Scotland, she met some American tourists while walking who asked if she lived locally, she mentioned that she had a house nearby, and when she simply pointed at her security and said, “No, but he has!”

• Queen Elizabeth was the first British monarch to celebrate her Diamond wedding anniversary. The Queen and Prince Philip revisited Broadlands on their 60th anniversary, where they spent their wedding night.

• Many of The Queen’s official tours were undertaken on the Royal Yacht Britannia. It was launched by Her Majesty on 16 April 1953

and was commissioned for service on 7 January 1954 and de-commissioned in December 1997. During this time, Britannia travelled more than a million miles on Royal and official duties.

• The Royal Yacht Britannia was first used by The Queen when she embarked with the Duke of Edinburgh on 1 May 1954 at Tobruk for the final stage of their Commonwealth Tour returning to the Pool of London. The last time The Queen was on board Britannia for an official visit was on 9 August 1997 for a visit to Arran.

• Since her accession to the throne in 1952, Her Majesty has visited Edinburgh nearly every year, taking up residence in the Palace of Holyroodhouse during Holyrood Week.

• During her reign, The Queen has received many unusual gifts including a variety of live animals. The more unusual animals have been placed in the care of the London zoo, among them an elephant, jaguars and sloths from Brazil, and two black beavers from Canada. She has also received gifts of pineapples, eggs, a box of snail shells, a grove of maple trees and 7kg of prawns.

• The Queen has sent over 100,000 telegrams to centenarians in the UK and the Commonwealth.

The British Motor Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of historic British Cars; it boasts nearly 400 cars in its collection which span the classic, vintage and veteran eras. Situated in the small village of Gaydon, Warwickshire, it’s just a stone’s throw away for a fabulous day out!

celebrations taking place during May half term, what else could we do but celebrate the royal cars in our collection?

We are lucky enough to have a number of vehicles used by members of the royal family in our collection. These include the first bespoke royal Land Rover state review car - one of the fleet of vehicles used for HM Queen Elizabeth II’s first Commonwealth Tour - and a 1971 Rover P5B, personal property of HM the Queen, but on long term loan to the Museum. As you’d expect, our friendly costumed characters are back and this time they will be taking tours and roaming the Museum as royal reporters looking for the next scoop and our ever-popular craft activities are back in the Learning Space and children will be able to make a ‘royal’ car to take home.

Our younger visitors love getting creative, and we like to set them a challenge. This half term we’ll provide a Union Jack cup and a selection of recycled materials, and you just need to bring your imagination! Will you make a limousine or a carriage? Drop into our Learning Space between 10.00am – 1.30pm and create your own British ‘royal’ car to take home.

When you’ve finished your creation, you can choose to enter it into our competition to win a family afternoon tea. We’ll take a photo and your details, and entries will be judged at the end of the holidays with the winner announced on social media.

The ‘Road Map’ Family Trail – every day

Pick up our ‘Road Map’ Trail at the Family Activity Station and explore the cars in the collection that are linked by name to different destinations around the world. When you’ve completed the trail, travel back to the Family Activity Station to check your answers and collect a reward sticker.
