1 Abbey Lane, is located in a prominent position on the Warwick Road entrance to Southam, and will feature in its own edition of BBC2’s “Restoration Homes” series on Wednesday August 15th at 8:00 pm. The programme will look into the history of the building with experts discussing various interesting finds. Hopefully it will also feature the involvement of the Friends of Southam‘s Cardall Collection in helping to uncover the

REGGIE DON’T EAT THAT! Dogs are what we call indiscriminate feeders, most of them will eat most things! I know because I have one, Reggie (labrador cross) likes nothing more than a walk through the cow field. To Reggie this is the equivalent of going to an eat-all-youlike creperie and if he doesn’t fancy eating it….. well he can always roll in it! Whilst these habits are rather offensive to our human sensibilities, they generally aren’t harmful to Reggie who has a stomach of iron. However there are plenty of items around the house and garden that dogs often do swallow, with serious and sometimes life threatening consequences.

The canine intestine never ceases to amaze me with its ability to cope with objects that were never intended to be eaten. Socks frequently go in one end and come out the other, sewing needles, items of jewellery, even a metal kebab skewer have passed uneventfully through dogs we have seen at the surgery.

Inevitably not everything gets through and when an object does get stuck in the stomach or intestine, it causes the dog

to become very ill, very quickly.

Emergency surgery is required to remove the obstruction and save the dog’s life. Stones are the most common foreign body we have to surgically remove, followed by socks (not all make it through) and then children’s toys. Dogs also have a taste for corn on the cob and as we come into barbecue season please take note …the eaten cobs are just the right shape and size to form a bung in the small intestine. Barbecued spare ribs should never be given to dogs as the sharp bony splinters can cause serious intestinal damage including fatal perforation. Equally, don’t be tempted to give your dog the fat off the steak, he may love you for it at the time but he won’t when he develops pancreatitis. Who would have thought a barbecue could be so hazardous!!

When my border terrier swallowed a piece of lead, not only did I find the lead but also bits of biro and part of a plastic box!

Equally surprising was the labrador who swallowed a ball the postman had thrown for her. At surgery we found not one but two balls in her stomach! Her owners said the second ball had gone missing the previous year.

So be warned, there isn’t much that a keen canine won’t consume….unless it’s a tablet from the vet of course!

A manufacturing business will usually also insure their goods/products with Products Liability Insurance and many service providers and professionals like IT Consultants and Accountants etc will insure their advice with Professional Indemnity Insurance.

Business owners are usually very busy and it is all to easy at renewal not to double check that your sums insured

and risks that you are insuring for are adequate and up to date. This could mean you are under or over insured and possibly not covering all the parts of your business especially if you have expanded or changed your products/ services etc. A few minutes spent with a local broker reviewing your insurance requirements could be very cost effective.

Loss of profits cover known as Business Interruption Insurance is very important because a substantial fire for example may mean the business can not operate for many months with no recompense for the loss of turnover unless the Business had Business Interruption Insurance.

We certainly recommend you immediately review your policy for this. A sole trader could also insure their own personal loss of income in the event of an accident or illness.

In the event of a claim a loss adjuster is usually instructed by the Insurance Company and this can sometimes lead to disputes. Your broker is best placed to liaise on your behalf and where appropriate recommend a loss assessor who on behalf of the client negotiates fair value with the loss adjuster/insurance company. It’s also fair to say that at a time of a claim a friendly/familiar

voice over the phone or familiar face in the local office to discuss your claim is reassuring.

There are many advantages of using a local independent commercial insurance broker like Reynolds Insurance which include reviewing your individual business insurance requirements, notifying any changes during the year, experienced staff that are able to explain the policy wordings/jargon and most importantly to shop around for the most competitive price and comprehensive cover for their client.
