The BIG question is – Did you all enjoy a fabulous Summer? Well if truth be known the weather could have been better, couldn’t it! In fact they tell us it was the wettest summer on record! – but the Olympics and now the Paralympics have been absolutely fantastic and so on balance I guess it’s been great and now we appear to be enjoying an Indian Summer which apparently means decent weather even into October! So, another question to ask is - Will you all be out enjoying the ‘fun of the Fair’ on OCTOBER 15th? We really do hope the answer is ‘YES!’ since Southam & District Lions Club will once again be holding their famous ‘HOG ROAST’ at the back of the Old Mint in Southam.

People ask - Why are they doing it? And the answer is simple: It’s because they do and they do it every year having established a tradition more years ago than anyone cares to remember! But why on October 15th?

It’s because it’s Southam’s answer to Alton Towers - the FAMOUS ANNUAL MOP FAIR. So do all come along especially in the evening when the baps are generously filled with roasted pork, crackling, stuffing and apple sauce. Savour once again the aroma of the roasted meat and join the queue for the finest tastiest treat of the night! You are welcome to come along earlier and meet the Lions some of whom will have been on active duty since 8am getting the Hog ready and wired to the pole! (That’s the hog wired to the pole not the Lions!)

The Lions will be selling their HOG ROAST RAFFLE TICKETS with fabulous prizes given by our many business friends in the area and the TOMBOLA STALL will be there too which is always popular particularly with the young people. So mums and dads make sure you have some golden coins in your purses and pockets for the little ones!

The Lions are supporting local charities once again this year, but we intend some of the proceeds to be donated to the FOODBANK Project being run by BROMFORD HOUSING and sponsored by Stratford District Council.

This is in reaction to the Save The Children research published recently which stated that as many as one in eight children are now in poverty without even one hot meal a day. So please help us to do something about this dreadful situation by being as generous as you can by visiting us on October 15th.’’

HOPPING MAD! Feeling Itchy?

Lots of us enjoy sharing our home with our pets but we probably don’t want to share it with any extra lodgers! Even the poshest pet can be carrying around a few unwanted friends.

Fleas, especially the cat flea have adapted amazingly well to living in our homes, not just living…they can breed at a staggering rate.

Flea facts

• 1 adult flea can lay 500 eggs.

• 10 fleas can become 250,000 fleas within a month • It will take 2-4 months to eliminate a flea infestation from a house.

• A flea pupa can remain dormant for up to a year and then an adult flea can emerge.

When a flea jumps it has the same acceleration as an Apollo space rocket.

Feeling itchy yet?!!

Fleas feed on the blood of cats and dogs for preference although they will have a nibble on humans too, usually around the ankles! Some pets (and people) are allergic to the flea saliva, even a few fleas can make these pets so itchy that they will scratch, lick and bite themselves until they make their skin bleed. The mature fleas will lay eggs on the pet and as the pet walks about the house it sprinkles the eggs around. A tiny, hairy flea larva hatches out and immediately burrows down into the carpet or bedding, trying to get away from light. It lives amongst the carpet fibres feeding on dander and flea droppings which are essentially dried, digested blood. After a period of growth the larva spins a cocoon and then, like a butterfly in a chrysalis, it transforms from larva to flea. The fully formed flea remains in the cocoon until the environment is favourable for hatching.

This may be 1 day or up to a year and explains why people can move into a house that has been empty for months and within minutes of setting foot over the threshold fleas are biting their legs.

Urrgh!!

Not only are fleas a source of irritation, they also act as the intermediate host for a tapeworm. As the itchy dog or cat licks itself, it can inadvertently pick up and swallow a flea. If that flea is carrying a tapeworm the dog or cat then becomes host to an adult tapeworm…. lovely!!

The good news is that these days, flea control is easy to achieve with the excellent products now available. Spot on preparations are the most commonly used but there are also effective tablet formulations, injections & sprays.

However beware, there are a lot of products being sold that have very poor or no efficacy, usually spot-ons , sprays or powders, make sure you don’t waste

41ST KEN GRAHAM ANNUAL SENIOR CITIZENS’ PARTY It was the case of the ‘wow’ factor this year! Talk about ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ – on Saturday we saw fantastic examples of Southam’s Got Talent!

The occasion was the 41st Annual Lions Senior Citizens Party – named now with Ken Graham’s name since he was the organiser for some 38 years! Blessed this year with lovely sunshine some 140 Senior Citizens from Southam and surrounding villages were treated last weekend to an afternoon of fun at Southam College.

A lavish tea, provided courtesy of the Lion’s Ladies, was enthusiastically consumed, every last crumb, and then more entertainment from the Conchordians and Paul Gunton led to rousing applause from our lovely guests. The Lion’s were left in little doubt that the MUST be another party next year and so there shall be!

It was great to see the Hall packed with guests and it was clear that they all enjoyed themselves joining in with the songs of yesteryear. Lions President, Roger Lane, opened proceedings with a short address following which, guests fuelled with sherry, enjoyed a packed programme of entertainment, starting with The Conchordians, the fabulous children from Secret Garden who sang and danced so well and the ever popular Paul Gunton who sang a medley of songs old and new, with enthusiastic participation from the audience.ww
