Consider Denia this year... a gem of a town in the Costa Blanca Denia is a small coastal town on the Costa Blanca with a typically authentic Spanish feel. Rich in history, it boasts a thousand year old castle and well preserved ancient walls and bastions. Denia has its own 18-hole golf club, located very close to the town. The Club La Sella was designed by the famous Spanish golfer, José Maria Olazabal. Further courses can be found at Oliva, Moriara, and Javea.

Eating out There are many welcoming restaurants along the promenade facing the marina. The marina itself has a modern cosmopolitan area where you can dine overlooking the moored yachts bobbing in the water. The town comes alive in the evenings and has a few nightclubs to party the night away.

Excursions It’s possible to take the ferry to Ibiza, Mallorca or Formentera directly from the port in Denia. Valencia is around an hour away, with Theme Park, ‘Terra Mitica’ also a short drive away.

Top 3 Gardening Jobs 1. In February keep removing all the debris that has collected over the autumn and winter months to avoid slugs and snails and other non-beneficial insects over-wintering.

2. In March using a half moon edging tool, re-define the edges of your lawn by slicing around 2cms (1 inch) off, this will make the edges look much sharper and neater. (Using a spade won’t work as it is not sharp enough and will be beveled).

Think of your lawn like pastry the more you roll it the more uneven the edges become, that’s the same for your lawn, the more you walk on it and it weathers the more it becomes untidy and uneven. It will amaze you how much better your lawn looks now, this job should be done every year in March and then throughout the year you simply snip the edges as part of your mowing regime.

Design Tip: Structure

Normally we focus on the smaller things in our garden for example, how our Hostas are being nibbled by slugs, but taking the time to step back and look with a critical eye at your garden could improve it further. Winter is a good time to see what structure you have in the garden, i.e. the greenery rather than pergolas or fences. Imagine your lounge with the sofa, TV and chairs in it and nothing else - they are the structure in the room, then you add your own feel by adding ornaments and smaller pieces of furniture like coffee tables.

Imagine that trees and shrubs are the structure and perennials and annuals are the ornaments. A lot of people concentrate on the ornaments without getting the structure right. So sit back and consider what you have in the way of structure, if it feels bare in the winter and/or whether all the plants are a similar shape or height. If so, consider adding a shrub or two that will perform for you in the winter or if you have the space try a small and slow growing tree to give that extra feel of permanence.

3 plants that are looking great at the moment (apart from all the lovely spring bulbs!) are: 1. Heathers - there are so many heathers to choose from and a lot of them look good right through the winter. Erica x darleyensis ‘Furzey’ has lilac-pink flowers, has a low spreading habit and looks great planted in drifts and under deciduous trees.

2. Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ this is an upright, deciduous, scented shrub with pink flowers in dense clusters from December to March. It is best to plant it near an entrance or walkway to make the most of the scent, it likes full sun to part shade, has upright habit and requires an annual prune to keep its growth and flower production in check.

Chaenomeles x superba ‘Crimson and Gold’

3. Chaenomeles x superba ‘Crimson and Gold’ the ornamental quince, it bears bright crimson-red flowers with gold anthers on bare stems from March until May and is a welcome injection of colour this time of year. Green glossy leaves appear after the flowers and then small fruits. A compact shrub that grows to about 1m in height and 2m in width, great for a small garden, where space is limited and also against a wall, prefers full sun or part shade. © Nicki Jackson, Blue Daisy Garden Design Ltd.

Versatile and affordable, conservatories are an excellent choice for homeowners requiring more space, or wanting to extend the garden into their home. They give a light an airy room to the house, which allows the sense of being in the garden - a shield from the elements, and ‘extending’ the summer months.

Perfect for sun rooms, but equally useful as a dining room, breakfast room, family den, study or even kitchen. One of the real advantages of conservatories over any other type of extension, is that they let in the light and warmth from the garden while at the same time providing shelter from the elements.

For most, they have become a desirable part of modern-day living. In fact, over a quarter of a million were built in 2006.

For many people they are an affordable, ideal way of acquiring more living space without having to move house. In many instances planning permission is not needed and, provided they are well-built, they are almost guaranteed to add value to your property.

Conservatories have traditionally been built on the back of properties, leading out to the garden, although it is possible to have them on the side or even the front. Since they

are designed to feel part of the garden they are almost exclusively built on ground floor level, although there is no real reason (apart from planning implications) why they cannot be built on an upper level, depending on the design of your house.

Different aspects bring with them different advantages and disadvantages, and careful consideration should be given to the direction of your proposed conservatory at the planning stage.

East-facing - This will get the sun in the morning so is ideal for a breakfast room. It will not overheat in the middle of the day or evening.

West-facing - This will get the sun from late afternoon onwards and provides good conditions for many plants.

North-facing - This will get angled sun at the start and end of the day and, although it will not overheat in the summer, it could be bitterly cold in the winter. Unless you are using the conservatory solely as a summer sun-room, give careful consideration to how you are going to heat it.

South-facing - This is excellent for catching the sun but will be unbearably hot in the summer with the sun overhead at the hottest time of the day.

Give careful thought to ventilation and blinds.
