Slow cooked

beef Bourguignon

A delicious, hearty and warming dish that is perfect for cold winter days. The ideal feast for the whole family for Sunday lunch, this mouth-watering casserole takes around 2hrs and 30 mins to cook.

It is well worth the wait, made with fragrant garlic, shallots, thyme and parsley. Served with a light and creamy swede mash, this dish is healthy as well as filling.

Ingredients • low calorie cooking spray • 400g small shallots • 100g back bacon rashers, all visible fat removed, chopped • 700g stewing beef, all visible fat removed, cut into bite-size pieces • 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 150ml red wine • 425ml beef stock • 1 level tbsp tomato purée • sprig of fresh rosemary • sprig of fresh thyme • 700g swede, peeled and cut into large chunks • 50ml vegetable stock • 1 bay leaf • pinch of grated nutmeg • small handful fresh parsley, chopped, to garnish

Serves 4 Cooking time - 2 hours 30 minutes Skill level - easy peasy lemon squeezy • Preheat your oven to 180C, gas 4. Place a large frying pan sprayed with low calorie cooking spray over a medium heat. Add the bacon and shallots and fry for 3-4 minutes until starting to brown. Add the beef. Stir-fry for 5-7 minutes over a high heat until browned.

• Stir in the garlic, red wine, stock, tomato purée and herbs.

Season, bring to the boil and then transfer to a casserole dish.

Cover and cook in the oven for 2 hours.

• Meanwhile, boil the swede for 12-15 minutes until tender. Drain.

• Add the stock and nutmeg, then season and mash.

• Divide the bourguignon and mash between 4 plates, garnish with parsley and serve.

As Deputy Manager, you won’t carry the full weight of responsibility but you’ll be helping to run a substantial business and will be the manager’s righthand person - making decisions and directing things on a daily basis. We may sometimes feel that osteopathy is not appropriate for you and refer you to your GP or another specialist such as an orthopaedic surgeon.

Treatment is different for every patient but may include techniques such as different types of soft tissue massage and joint articulation to release tension, stretch muscles, help relieve pain and mobilise your joints. Sometimes, when we move joints you may hear a ‘click’. This is just like the click people get when they crack their knuckles. We may discuss exercises that you can do to improve your posture and movement in your workplace and everyday life.

Professionalism and safety

To qualify, an osteopath must study for four to five years for an undergraduate degree. This is similar to a medical degree, with more emphasis on anatomy and musculoskeletal medicine and includes more than 1,000 hours of training in osteopathic techniques. By law, osteopaths must register with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). It is an offence for anyone to call themselves an osteopath if they are not registered.

The British Medical Association’s guidance for general practitioners states that doctors can safely refer patients to osteopaths.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear?

As with any medical examination, you will probably be asked to undress to your underwear, so please wear something you are comfortable in or bring along some shorts and a T-shirt to change into.

Can I bring a friend or relative?

Yes – if you wish, you can have someone present throughout your consultation and treatment.

Does it hurt?

Some soft tissue treatment may cause discomfort during treatment. Your osteopath will tell you what to expect, and will want you to let them know if you are in pain. You may feel stiff or sore after treatment.

This is a normal, healthy response to the treatment.

Do I need to see my doctor first?

You do not need to see your doctor first if you are paying for your own treatment. However, some insurance companies require you to see your doctor first.

How much does treatment cost?

The first consultation costs £50 and lasts between 45 and 60 minutes while follow-on appointments cost £40 and last 30 minutes.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments you need depends on the condition and person we are treating. We aim to keep your appointments to a minimum but in general you can expect a treatment plan to last between 4-6 appointments.

Conditions we treat The most common conditions that we treat are: • back and neck pain • shoulder and arm problems • pelvis, hip and leg problems • sports and other injuries However, patients have found osteopathy helpful for many other conditions. Winter is

finally knocking at the door...

hat a bizarre winter! I don’t think I can remember a run up to Christmas being so warm! And a couple of weeks ago one of our customers brought us a bunch of daffodils...freshly picked...from her garden! In January?

Well, that was then - now things have started to look a whole lot different. You can almost smell it in the air can’t you? Winter has definitely arrived! The news reports keep showing us images of cars stuck in snow and children sledging to school. They are reminding us that winter isn’t over yet, in fact it’s well underway and Warwickshire has now received its first dusting and a huge drop in temperatures It’s been easy to feel complacent about how little heat we’ve needed in our homes, but now as the cold hits, we could all be in for a bit of a shock!

Don’t leave ordering your fuel until the last moment; keep your stocks of coal topped up, make sure your cylinders of gas are not about to run out get a spare one in if you can (make the most of our current deposit free scheme!), check that log pile, have you got enough kindling..firelighters...matches?!

Having a full stock of fuel is as important as having a fully stocked larder - and feels almost as good as a fully stocked wine rack! And once sorted, you can put your feet up and relax in the knowledge that whatever the winter is about to throw at us, you’ve got it covered.
