CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

You can’t see it, taste it or smell it but it can kill quickly and with no warning.

6 main symptoms to look our for: Common sources of CO (carbon monoxide) include the following wood, oil or gas fuelled appliances: Boilers • Room heaters • Furnaces • Charcoal grills • Fireplaces Cooking ranges • Water heaters • Wood burning stoves Vehicles run in closed garages • Portable generators A simple, inexpensive check and maintenance if required (depending on the source) is all that is required to keep you and your family safe.

Other signs that could point to carbon monoxide poisoning Carbon monoxide symptoms are similar to flu, food poisoning, viral infections and simply tiredness. That’s why it’s quite common for people to mistake this very dangerous poisoning for something else.

Your symptoms only occur when you are at home and disappear or get better when you leave home and come back on returning with others in your household are experiencing symptoms (including your pets) and they appear at a similar time. If you suspect that you have inhaled carbon monoxide, then go outside and get fresh air immediately.

Then, open doors and windows, turn off gas appliances and leave the house. See your doctor immediately or go to hospital - let them know that you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning. They can do a blood or breath test to check.

If you think there is immediate danger, call the Gas Emergency Helpline 0800 111 999. Get a Gas Safe/ HETAS registered engineer to inspect your gas appliances and flues to see if there is a dangerous problem. Don’t

assume your gas appliances are safe: get a Gas Safe registered gas engineer to do a check. This is the only safe way to prevent yourself and those around you from incurring serious illness or death due to carbon monoxide exposure.

When did you last have the flue swept?

Has it been tested to ensure that no cracks or faults have developed?

Are dangerous gases able to escape? it is something we all suspect but Perhaps many of us choose to ignore but a

working chimney is something that should not be ignored. If you have a gas-flame effect fire or an occasional solid-fuel fire, you should have your chimney swept once a year. If it’s in daily use, you should have it swept twice a year, as a chimney is essentially a household exhaust pipe, funnelling away soot, smoke, gases, hot ashes and sparks.

Sweeping should be an essential part of home maintenance, which keeps your home and more importantly, your family healthy. Common misperception is that only chimneys servicing solid-fuel fires require sweeping, but even with a gas-flame effect fire, if a new appliance is being installed in a chimney previously used for solid fuel, it should be swept beforehand. Gas Safe Register (GFE) recommends that any gas appliance is safety checked at least once a year. If your chimney fails this test, a chimney lining specialist will need to install a new flue lining (by a Gas Safe approved installer or, for solid fuel,

by a HETAS qualified expert). Unfortunately, you can’t see or smell carbon monoxide, but the presence of it in your home brings devastating consequences.

Keeping your chimney healthy can conjure up images from Mary Poppins, but honestly, it is no longer a job that ushers forth black clouds of soot ready for Victorian housemaids to clean up! A modern, sealed sweep ensures that your flue is safe and unclogged by bird nests, soot build-ups and any other debris that might have dropped down from the chimney pot. Just as a roof tile may dislodge, so a chimney lining can deteriorate, exposing mortar joints and brickwork to corrosion and, ultimately, collapse. The older the house, the greater the risk.

Interestingly, chimney sweeps are traditionally associated with good luck. In central Europe, ornamental sweeps are attached to flowers or confectionery as a New Year present - perhaps, in the coldest of climes, as a reminder of the importance of keeping your chimneys in tip-top condition.

Welcome Hi all, Spring is in sight; although, our seasons do seem to be merging into one. I was hoping for a bit of snow - not a lot, just enough for a few snowballs in the garden, but that was a non-starter. Roast Chicken, Potatoes & Thyme Serves 4. Ready in 1 hour 20 minutes

1kg potatoes, such as Maris Piper or King Edward, washed or peeled and cut into chunks 1 red onion, cut into wedges • 1 lemon, sliced • 2 bay leaves Large bunch of fresh thyme, broken into sprigs 1 tbsp tomato purée • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 120ml boiling chicken stock • 1.25kg chicken thighs and drumsticks, skinned Low-calorie cooking spray • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

• Put the potatoes into a large shallow ovenproof dish in a single layer. Scatter over the onion, lemon slices, bay leaves and most of the thyme sprigs.

• Put the tomato puree into a bowl with the vinegar, stir in the stock and pour over the potatoes. Top with the chicken and coat it with low-calorie cooking spray.

Season to taste.

• Roast for 50 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through and the potatoes are tender.

• You can skin the chicken using kitchen paper to

help you get a good grip (for the drumsticks, peel skin away from the thick end then pull it off over the bony part).

Transfer the chicken to a plate and cover with foil to keep warm. Increase the oven temperature to 220C/Fan 200C/ Gas Mark 7 and roast everything else for 10 minutes or until the potatoes are turning golden.

Put the chicken back on top, garnish with the remaining thyme and serve hot with salad or your favourite vegetables.

ike many mum’s Karen Pigott found that after each of her children were born the baby weight seemed harder and harder to shift. “After my first three children were born I was able to lose weight fairly quickly, unfortunately 18 months after my third child was born I was diagnosed with breast cancer.”

Following aggressive, but successful treatment Karen was told she was unlikely to have any more children. To her delight she proved the doctors wrong by going on to have two more children. “I found that with my youngest two my eating habits had completely changed, I ate far more food, but probably not the food I should have been eating. I ended up putting on 6 stone with each pregnancy”.

Over the next 10 years Karen tried everything to lose the weight and was always looking for the next quick fix. “My confidence was at an all time low and it left me feeling totally inadequate. It wasn’t until I saw a friend who looked great, that I heard about Slimming World.” At the time Karen was living in Austria and was delighted to discover that she could follow Slimming World online.

‘cheap as chips’ chocolate pots

Serves 4 Cooking time - 2 hours 30 minutes Skill level - easy peasy lemon squeezy

Ingredients • low calorie cooking spray • 400g small shallots • 100g back bacon rashers, all visible fat removed, chopped • 700g stewing beef, all visible fat removed, cut into bite-size pieces • 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 150ml red wine • 425ml beef stock • 1 level tbsp tomato purée • sprig of fresh rosemary • sprig of fresh thyme • 700g swede, peeled and cut into large chunks • 50ml vegetable stock • 1 bay leaf • pinch of grated nutmeg • small handful fresh parsley, chopped, to garnish

• Preheat your oven to 180C, gas 4. Place a large frying pan sprayed with low calorie cooking spray over a medium heat. Add the bacon and shallots and fry for 3-4 minutes until starting to brown. Add the beef. Stir-fry for 5-7 minutes over a high heat until browned.

• Stir in the garlic, red wine, stock, tomato purée and herbs.

Season, bring to the boil and then transfer to a casserole dish.

Cover and cook in the oven for 2 hours.

• Meanwhile, boil the swede for 12-15 minutes until tender. Drain.

• Add the stock and nutmeg, then season and mash.

• Divide the bourguignon and mash between 4 plates, garnish with parsley and serve.

Slimming World’s chocolate pots will be a big hit with the chocolate-lovers among your friends and family. Infused with dark rum, these rich, dark chocolate pots are really simple to make. They take just 20 minutes to prepare then you can leave in the fridge to set before serving. Serves 4.

Ingredients

Top each pot with a dollop of fromage frais and decorate with chocolate sprinkles and a white chocolate star.

Method

- Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water then leave to cool for 10 minutes.

- Beat the egg yolks, sweetener and rum into the cooled chocolate.

- Whisk the egg whites until just stiff but not too dry then fold into the chocolate.

- Transfer the mixture into small serving glasses (shot glasses are ideal) and chill for 1 hour or until set.

• 60g dark plain chocolate • 3 eggs, separated • 3-4 tbsp sweetener • 2 tbsp dark rum • 4 tbsp fat free natural fromage frais, sweetened to taste • 1 level tbsp chocolate sprinkles, to decorate • 4 white chocolate stars, to decorate

Who knew hot coffee poured over ice cream could taste this good? Our quick-make classic will round off a meal to perfection.

Ingredients

• 15g dark chocolate, chilled • 8 x small (20g) scoops of reduced-fat vanilla ice cream • 300ml strong, hot espresso

Method

• Using a vegetable peeler, cut the chocolate into shavings, then set aside.

• Put 2 scoops of ice cream into each of 4 glasses. Pour over the hot coffee (it will melt the ice cream a little).

Warm Up Gardening is like any other exercise; you need to warm up first. Don’t go straight into heavy garden work; start off with lighter jobs as this will lessen the chance of muscle strain.

Weeding Do not bend over the beds to get at the weeds.

Instead place one foot in the bed to take some of the body weight allowing you to keep your back straight. Invest in a hoe if you have large beds and take regular breaks.

Clever pruning • Get as close as possible to the things you are pruning and avoid overstretching to reach the area you are dealing with.

• Invest in some long handled secateurs to reach plants and bushes that are beyond normal reach.

Take a break from repetitive activity • Vary your activity by spending no more than 20-30 minutes on any one thing and make sure you take regular breaks.

• Be aware of your posture and try to keep hips and shoulders in alignment and ideally above each other. If you do have to do repetitive work using one side of the body, balance it out by using the other side aswell alternatively.

Be clever with the paving • If laying a patio, keep the slab close to your body and bend your knees; it is sometimes better to bend one knee rather two, as your supporting leg gives you a position of strength. Ensure the shoulders and hips are above each other before you take the strain of lifting.

Plan ahead • If you are planning a trip to the local DIY store to buy heavy items such as cement or gravel, buy smaller bags rather than one big bag as they are easier and safer to carry.

• If buying things like compost, sand or gravel in bulkier amounts, shovel the contents of the large bags straight into smaller containers or wheelbarrow from the back of the car.

• Don’t lift with your arms straight out, keep the elbows bent and to your side to minimise the stress on your back.

• A specialist garden trolley might be worth investing in to move these sorts of materials around, especially if you have lots of patio pots to move around as well.

• A double strap back support is a worthy investment for a keen gardener. Wear it to protect the back when lifting heavy objects or to give the low back some extra support. It should be worn for no longer than a couple of hours at a time and can be purchased from Chestnut Osteopathic Practice or online at stores such as ‘Amazon’.
