LOCAL DRAGONBOATING PODIATRIST This month has seen some of the highs & lows of dragonboat racing for our club, and an analogy with a certain widespread foot condition is clearly evident. We travelled to Milton Keynes where the coveted Cow trophies were up for grabs. But why cows?

Well apparently the local “Concrete Cows” are an iconic work of sculpture, created in 1978 and made from scrap, fibreglass & concrete. There are three cows and three calves, all half-life size. In honour of these, the event organisers hand out small replica cows as the trophies for race winners, so there is an added incentive to win to obtain one of these unusual but cute awards.

The format for the day was the 200m races in the morning and 500m races in the afternoon.

Unfortunately, the team made a dire start to the 200m races which barely improved throughout the morning, with no chance of getting a cow, and missing out on vital league points in the process. This was a major setback to us in our attempts to show that we were worthy of our place in the Premiership, as we were beaten

by Standard League crews that we demolished last season. Things were not going well!

I have certainly felt similar when managing Diabetic Foot Ulcers. These are an all-too-

common complication of diabetes which can have devastating effects sometimes leading to amputation of a foot or leg or even death. In my 8 years as Diabetic Foot Specialist for Warwickshire NHS, I have seen many successes in the treatment of these ulcers, but also some failures where I wish more could have been done. Due to the complex, multi-factorial nature of the Diabetic Foot, a team of relevant & experienced Health Care Professionals should be involved to help resolve ulceration and prevent reoccurrence.

A regular patient of mine has demonstrated that clearly this month. As a longstanding diabetic, he had lost sensation in his feet many years ago, which meant that he could not feel any damage taking place to them. So when a shoe rubbed on his toe, it would ulcerate, get infected, and require amputation. Whilst this sounds pretty horrific, it is generally not as bad as when the ulcer occurs on the ball of the foot, as if amputation is required then, the leg is sometimes taken off at the level of the knee. Unfortunately for this patient, such an ulcer has been present under the big toe joint for some months, and so a strong team approach was required. This included the Doctor, Practice Nurse, and Orthopaedic Foot Surgeon, the patient, his wife and myself. Only a small piece of bone has had to be removed

from under the ulcer, rather than anything more extensive, and it is now healing well. I will soon be providing a newly-designed insole to reduce pressure & further trauma to the ulcer site, to be used with special stretchable footwear to ensure safe use of the insole.

So back to the 500m races at Milton Keynes.

Dragonboat racing is all about teamwork getting 20 people to work together to their best ability with the sole aim of making the boat go faster. Everyone needs to be in time, and co-ordinate their efforts to achieve this. This was obviously missing in the earlier races, but after some lunch and reflection by all involved, the afternoon saw Pershore Phoenix back on track. A hard session on the water and we eventually came away with some league points that we so desperately needed. More importantly, we got our Cow trophy!

The past few months have been a busy exciting times here at LoveBallet Dance Company.

(Aidan Lesingham, Nadia Lesingham, Izzy Holloway, Ella Stephenson and Isla Johnson) an awarded a place with the Regional Youth Ballet to perform Les Sylphides at the Mill in Ban May. It involved some intense training which the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the challenges spectacular on stage. Following that audition, 2 pupils Aidan Lesingham and Phoebe Wille Youth Ballet (part of the English National Ballet) performance of Swan Lake, which will take this year. There was a lot of competition for places, with over 140 auditioning for only 50 p were awarded places and will be performing with a professional dancer from the English N experience that will be!

Amongst the dance success, we are currently working through the last phase of the planne New LoveBallet Dance Studio. This will be the LoveBallet HQ (the other branches will still c own studio will enable us to expand further and develop our classes more. The Studio will studio’s both complete with sprung wooden dance floors, barre’s will line the walls and mir ceiling to create a lovely ambience for dance and air conditioning and a very good heating in at Insight Park, Welsh Road East in Southam and we are due to have an opening party a
