FIREWORK PHOBIA IN DOGS The firework season is upon us and although many of us look forward to the occasion it is estimated that nearly half of the dogs in the UK have a firework phobia.

If they cannot do either of these things they can become extremely distressed and show behaviours such as barking, pacing and aggression.

Build a den for your dog, somewhere they can hide and feel safe. It can be made from a crate or cardboard box and should be large enough for them to stand up and turn around in. The den should be away from windows, doors and walls and should have a padded floor to dampen sound waves and vibrations. Blankets can be put in the den for them to burrow in and over the top to block out light. They should have free access to the den and should never be shut in it. If your dog has a play-mate that isn’t afraid of fireworks it is a good idea to keep them together during this time so your dog can learn there is nothing to be scared of.

During firework season walk your dog during the day and give them plenty of exercise so they are more likely to be sleepy in the evening. Let them out to go to the toilet before it gets dark then shut all windows and

It is important to take time throughout the year to get your dog used to loud noises and light flashes so when fireworks do occur it is a much more familiar experience for them. Speak to your vet or an animal behaviourist to find out how to start a desensitisation and counter-conditioning programme with your dog.
