God of Carnage at The Mill

A play by Yazmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton “I don’t have a sense of humour, I have no intention of acquiring one! Banbury Cross Players will present Yazmina Reza’s God of Carnage from 5 - 8 March 2014 at the Mill Arts Centre, Banbury. Yasmina Reza is an expert analyst of social hypocrisy; and her play, in Christopher Hampton’s witty translation, starts out as a rancidly funny account of two couples tiptoeing around their mutual dislike. The play loaded with misogyny, racial prejudice and homophobia, a recipe of our time… “… a comedy of manners without the manners. The play deals with the aftermath of a playground altercation between two boys and what happenswhen their parents meet to talk about it. As the evening progresses, the alcohol flows and tensions emerge until finally the gloves come off.” A brutally entertaining play, it is a comedy and was winner of the 2009 Tony Award. God of Carnage won an Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in London, and became the third longest-running production of the decade on Broadway with 452 performances. It has been adapted as a film, directed by Roman Polanski, in 2011. The Independent calls it,“Fierce and very funny. Elegant, acerbic and entertainingly fuelled on pure bile. Limehouse Lizzy live at The Mill, Fri 21st February 2014 - SHOW STARTS 8.30PM

Limehouse Lizzy are live at the Mill, Banbury on their 2014 tour, playing the greatest hits of Phil Lynott & Thin Lizzy. Full details at: Limehouse Lizzy are officially one of the hardest working bands in the UK. They were accredited for their live shows by the Performing Rights Society in December 2011 and received their certificate from PRS Chairman (and respected songwriter) Guy Fletcher OBE. Renowned for an action-packed pyrothechnic-fuelled explosion of a show, Limehouse Lizzy continue to keep the spirit of Celtic rock icon Philip Lynott and his band Thin Lizzy alive, well and dominating stages worldwide. The band have also added a tribute into their show to ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist (and world renowned solo artist) Gary Moore. Attention to detail, playful audience interaction and that all important X-factor that leaves you with the feeling of witnessing the real thing have led to their performance being described as “beyond tribute”, by both audience and critics alike.

As many as one in 50 people suffer continual headaches because of “medication overuse”, Nice reports. The problem begins with taking the odd painkiller for tension headaches or migraines, which usually works. But some people take the pills more and more often, until they are on tablets for more than half the days in a month. Nice says that if this goes on for more than three months the medication ends up causing the problem it is intended to cure. So what alternatives are there to continually popping pills? The British Osteopathic Association comments, “tension-type and neck related headaches are the most common form of headache. If you suffer from tension-type headache, then regular gentle exercise will almost certainly help - such as yoga, Pilates, swimming, walking. Some people find it hard to relax and probably don’t realise how tense they are. If someone suffers from headaches it may also be neck related due to stiffness or restrictions of the neck. Osteopaths look to find the cause of tensions or stiffness and seek to relieve it by helping the body achieve more mobility and flexibility. Other lifestyle factors such as poor posture at a desk or tiredness can lead to tension-type or neck related headaches. Osteopaths look to relieve this tension and give advice on posture and exercises to do to help prevent the tension or stiffness from building up. If you would like any further information or advice please do not hesitate to call Chestnut Osteopathic Practice on Tel 01295 713666. t:01926 815935

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR ABILITIES Neurological physiotherapy and elderly rehabilitation in your own home. How can I help you? • • • • •

Improved day-to-day function Advice and support Better movement Exercise safely Prevent falls

I specialise in treating conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord and nerves and have an in depth knowledge of many neurological conditions including: • • • • • • • •

Vestibular and Balance Problems Motor Neuron Disease Peripheral Neuropathy Parkinson’s Disease Multiple Sclerosis Head Injury Spinal Injury Stroke

As well as treating neurological problems I also offer elderly rehabilitation. My Philosophy My philosophy is to help people to get back a sense of themselves. I work with people to set goals that are meaningful to them, not only working towards independence but

also towards returning to activities they enjoy. I help people gain confidence in their ability to move and exercise. I aim to leave people with a clear plan that enables them to work towards and achieve long term goals after physiotherapy has ended. About me I have been a practicing, qualified physiotherapist for over 16 years, and specialist in neurological physiotherapy for 13 years. I am Bobath trained to advanced level. I spent most of my career working for the NHS in in London and Sussex gaining experience within in-patient settings right through to home based rehabilitation. I am passionate about my job and really enjoy the sense of achievement that comes from working with someone towards their goals. For the eight years prior to starting private practice two years ago I was a Lead Physiotherapist for a number of neurological and stroke rehab teams where I had a complex caseload, lead teams and supported student and qualified physiotherapists to learn and develop skills in neurological physiotherapy.

What can we achieve? I work with people to: • Reduce Spasticity (stiff, high toned muscles) • Overcome difficulties with daily function • Re-educate normal movement t:01926 815935

• • • • • • •

Improve or maintain fitness Improve co-ordination Gait re-education Improve balance Reduce dizziness Return to sport Build strength

Emma Thomas

Neurological and Stroke Thomas Physiotherapy

Neurological andSpecialist Stroke Physiotherapist in stroke, neurology Physiotherapy and elderly rehabilitation

I also work with carers to teach best practice techniques to move and handle people. I can help carers to learn how to promote independence and activity through the way they handle people during care. I can teach carers how to make sure people use their maximum ability and function. What can you expect? We start with an in depth assessment where we talk about what your difficulties are and the problems affecting you. I make sure I get a good understanding of what your condition means to you and what you need from me. I then carry out a physical assessment to analyse your movement and establish what the main impairments are. I spend time talking to you about what you would like to achieve and work with you to set realistic goals and expectations from your physiotherapy treatment. We usually do some treatment or begin to establish an exercise programme at the first appointment. Next we begin the treatment which might involve me working with you to activate muscles, reduce stiffness or change movement patterns. Or it might be that you need a less hands on approach to treatment and that an exercise or management programme is more appropriate. For most people it is a combination of the two. You may need a few treatment sessions, or you may just need one. I will work with what you want from physiotherapy and also what is affordable. I strive to be as cost effective as possible. I treat people in their own homes as it allows me to see you in your own environment and practice tasks that are meaningful to you. It also means that I can get a true picture of what your condition means to you and its impact on your day-to-day life. I can meet you at your gym or local swimming pool to work on exercise, or if your goals are geared around outdoor mobility we can work outside. If you would like to know more, or think I can help you or a relative with any neurological condition please get in touch with me.

Consider Denia this year... a gem of a town in the Costa Blanca Denia is a small coastal town on the Costa Blanca with a typically authentic Spanish feel. Rich in history, it boasts a thousand year old castle and well preserved ancient walls and bastions. The area has, on average, 320 sunny days a year and the temperature rarely drops below 15 degrees, even in winter. Denia is recognised by the World Health Authority as one of the healthiest areas in the world to live. Discover some 20 kilometres of golden sands. The beaches north of the harbour tend to be livelier, while the southern ones offer peace and seclusion. Les Deveses and Les Marines – both within 15 minutes drive to the north of Denia – are Blue Flag winners, too. You’ll find sunbeds and parasols to rent, while the seafront promenade has a great selection of bars, cafés and restaurants.

activities to choose from: mountain climbing, hang-gliding, mountain biking and hiking to name a few.

Recreation and Leisure

It’s possible to take the ferry to Ibiza, Mallorca or Formentera directly from the port in Denia. Valencia is around an hour and a half away, with Theme Park, ‘Terra Mitica’ also within reach - about an hour’s drive.

Denia offers a variety of water sports, including: sailing, windsurfing, diving, fishing, rowing, and swimming. For those who prefer land to sea, there is also an extensive range of

Golf Denia has its own 18-hole golf club, located very close to the town, the Club La Sella was designed by professional golfer, José Maria Olazabal. Further courses can be found at nearby Oliva, Moriara, and Javea.

Eating out There are many welcoming restaurants along the promenade facing the marina. The marina itself has a modern cosmopolitan area where you can dine overlooking the moored yachts bobbing in the water. The town comes alive in the evenings and has a few nightclubs to party the night away.

Cuisine The local cuisine of Denia is typically that of the Costa Blanca, which combines delicacies from both land and the Mediterranean Sea. Many civilizations have lived in this area (Celts, Iberians, Greeks, Romans, Muslims), all of which have all left their mark on the gastronomy. The diet in Denia is a healthy Mediterranean one; the Costa Blanca is rich in fish, vegetables, olive-oil, rice and fruit and the ingredients

Spend the day on the one of the many golden sandy beaches, Take lunch in the rustic seafood restaurants and tapas bars along the beach and colourful harbour then, if you’re after little ‘retail therapy’, there are designer boutiques along the tree-lined Carrer Marques de Campo. t:01926 815935

Try watersports on Denia’s Blue Flag beaches Pick up a bargain at the Monday market Eat tapas overlooking the marina Play golf in the sun at Denia’s own 18 hole which are all used to prepare delicious, healthy dishes, such as Paella Valenciana, Arroz Negro (black rice), Arroz al horno (Oven baked rice), Arroz a banda (fish and rice stew), Arroz del Señoret (Princes rice). Aside from seafood, typical dishes include succulent lamb chops, rabbit in garlic, roast leg of lamb with garlic and fresh rosemary, and home made sausages and black puddings. If you have a sweet tooth then you will enjoy the local

homemade pastries and desserts that the whole region is famous for. Or Jijona ice-cream (Nougat), which is made with the almonds of the region. Whilst in Denia we recommend you try the local wine selection on offer, especially Jalon wine a which is of high quality with a lovely bouquet. There are many international restaurants in the town offering a wide choice of different cuisines from around the world.

for LoveBallet Pupils

It’s a great start to the New Year for 4 LoveBallet Pupils (a local dance school based in Southam) who successfully auditioned for the British Ballet Organisations Scholarship Scheme. Aidan Lesingham, Ella Stephenson, Hope Aris and Phoebe Willetts were all awarded places. The Scholarship scheme provides outstanding dance training to talented young individuals, however it is extremely competitive and they have done exceptionally well to all be awarded a place. It will require them to travel down to London one Sunday a month to the BBO’s Headquarters for training by some of the UK’s highly regarded dance teachers, who often teach at the Royal Ballet Schools. Miss Lorraine (Principal of LoveBallet Dance Company) said “I am so proud of the pupils, they have a huge amount of potential and this will give them a really good start to their dance career”.

A CONSERVATORY? Extend the Summer months with an ‘outdoor’ room... Versatile and affordable, conservatories are an excellent choice for homeowners requiring more space, or wanting to extend the garden into their home. They give a light an airy room to the house, which allows the sense of being in the garden - a shield from the elements, and ‘extending’ the summer months. Perfect for sun rooms, but equally useful as a dining room, breakfast room, family den, study or even kitchen. One of the real advantages of conservatories over any other type of extension, is that they let in the light and warmth from the garden whilst at the same time providing shelter from the elements. For most, they have become a desirable part of modern-day living. In fact, over a quarter of a million were built in 2006. For many people they are an affordable, ideal way of acquiring more living space without having to move house. In many instances planning permission is not needed and, provided they are well-built, they are almost guaranteed to add value to your property. Conservatories have traditionally been built on the back of properties, leading out to the garden, although it is possible to

have them on the side or even the front. Since they are designed to feel part of the garden they are almost exclusively built on ground floor level, although there is no real reason (apart from planning implications) why they cannot be built on an upper level, depending on the design of your house. Different aspects bring with them different advantages and disadvantages, and careful consideration should be given to the direction of your proposed conservatory at the planning stage. East-facing - This will get the sun in the morning so is ideal for a breakfast room. It will not overheat in the middle of the day or evening. West-facing - This will get the sun from late afternoon onwards and provides good conditions for many plants. North-facing - This will get angled sun at the start and end of the day and, although it will not overheat in the summer, it could be bitterly cold in the winter. Unless you are using the conservatory solely as a summer sun-room, give careful consideration to how you are going to heat it. South-facing - This is excellent for catching the sun but will be unbearably hot in the summer with the sun overhead at the hottest time of the day. Give careful thought to ventilation and blinds. t:01926 815935

Headache, Dizziness, Shortness of Breath?

Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that has no smell or taste. Breathing it in can make you unwell and it can kill. Carbon monoxide (CO) is sometimes referred to as the ‘silent killer’. In the UK, more than 50 people die from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning every year, and 200 people are left seriously ill. A headache is the most common symptom of mild carbon monoxide poisoning. Other symptoms include: - dizziness and nausea (feeling sick) - vomiting (being sick) - tiredness and confusion - stomach pain - shortness of breath and difficulty breathing Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can be similar to those of food poisoning and the flu. However, unlike flu, carbon monoxide poisoning does not cause a high temperature (fever).

Carbon monoxide

Carbon monoxide is difficult to detect because it has no smell, taste or colour. This means you can inhale it without realising. Carbon monoxide is produced when fuels such as gas, oil, coal, or wood do not burn fully. When a fire burns in an enclosed space, such as a room, the oxygen is gradually used up and replaced with carbon dioxide. The fuel is unable to burn fully and releases carbon monoxide. After breathing in carbon monoxide it enters your bloodstream and mixes with haemoglobin (the part of red blood cells that carry oxygen around your body), to form carboxyhaemoglobin. When this happens, the blood is no longer able to carry oxygen and the lack of oxygen causes the body’s cells and tissue to die.

What causes carbon monoxide to leak?

Incorrectly installed, poorly maintained or poorly ventilated household appliances, such as cookers, heaters and central heating boilers, are the most common sources of carbon monoxide. Blocked flues and chimneys can also prevent carbon monoxide escaping, allowing it to build up to dangerous levels. The risk of carbon monoxide poisoning can occur at any time in any home or enclosed space. Read more about the causes of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Being aware of the signs

Wallpaper Specialist Coving & Tiling

...the decorating professionals!

It is very important to be aware of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and to look out for warning signs. You should suspect carbon monoxide poisoning if: - other people in your house, flat or workplace fall ill with similar symptoms - your symptoms disappear when you go away (for example on holiday) and return when you come back - your symptoms tend to be seasonal – for example, you get headaches more often during the winter when the central heating is used more frequently Other possible signs of a CO leak include: - black, sooty marks on the front covers of gas fires - sooty marks on the walls around boilers, stoves or fires

COULD BE FATAL! t:01926 815935

Carbon Monoxide could be the cause!

- smoke building up in rooms due to a faulty flue - yellow instead of blue flames coming from gas appliances. Better to safe than sorry should be the sentiment. If you have any concerns, please call Town & Country Plumbing who will be happy to ensure that all is well with your central heating boiler, call 01295 710181.
