TV COMIC LEE MACK TO HEA LEAMINGTON SPA COMEDY F We just knew something funny was going on; and our hunch was right as Leamington’s very own comedy festival returns in October with a stellar line up.

It is only a year since the festival was created so it’s still the new kid on the block, but it’s already drawing a line up that must be the envy of many of the more established comedy festivals.

Mark Makin, one of the festivals co-directors told us, “we had such a great response to the first festival that we had to push it on.

the festival by a few more days, add in some really big names and also increase the number of venues taking part - overall we think people will be pleased with the festival again this time round”.

We think they will too as the line up includes the star of TV’s “Not Going Out” and “Would I lie to You” Lee Mack, alongside grumpy old man Arthur Smith, Radio 4’s ‘The Now Show’ star Mitch Benn, ‘Live at the Apollo’ and ‘Mock the Week’ regular Seann Walsh, “They Think it’s All Over” stalwart Lee Hurst and for younger comedy fans, BBC children’s TV megastar Justin Fletcher.

Plus With shows also from Richard Herring, Terry Alderton, The Reduced Shakespeare Company, Boothby Graffoe and more besides there really should be something for

everyone. Mark says this is a deliberate ploy rather than any quirk of fate as the aim is for the festival to have as broad an appeal as it can.

He told us, “We’re a pretty broad church when it comes to comedy, so for us stand up sits happily alongside children’s shows, theatre, cinema, spoken word and, well, anything really - the only proviso we put on something going into the festival is that it’s good quality and most importantly, it’s good fun”.

Another change for this year’s festival is the scheduling of free events in the town and the inclusion of new venues and partners.

Mark explains, “The first year was deliberately kept quite tight and small scale to allow us to see how it worked and

We’re currently in the midst of planning a number of free events in the town centre across the opening weekend and tieing up a few loose ends with some interesting venues that’ll do just that”.

ETHICAL FUNDS SET PACE ON GROWTH New research has underlined the upbeat performance of ethical funds, highlighting the opportunities they offer to investors to enjoy healthy returns while sticking to their principles.

Figures released by independent comparison website moneyfacts.co.uk on 14 August show the average ethical fund grew by 24 per cent over the last year, compared with 18 per cent for the average non-ethical fund. Over three years, the average ethical fund was up by 36 per cent compared with 31 per cent for the average non-ethical.

Over ten years, the average ethical fund grew by 56 per cent compared with 128 per cent for the average non-ethical fund. However, markets such as China/Greater China and global emerging markets, which have seen huge growth, have no ethical funds with a ten-year record, distorting the figures.

A typical ethical fund includes companies likely to have a positive impact on society and the environment – such

as those involved in renewable energy, sustainable timber and waste management – balanced by others regarded as ethically “neutral”, excluding those involved in mining, tobacco, alcohol or arms production, for example.

Tom Driver, of HB&O Financial Services, says: “This latest research certainly offers food for thought for investors in the process of reviewing portfolios or considering making a new investment.

“Investments don’t have to be made directly into a fund.

Providers of products such as private pensions, life assurance or ISAs can offer ethical options for customers, so there is a range of ways for investors to support companies with an ethical way of doing business.
